Moment of truth
In a recent blog I decried the torpid pace of our Internet service out here in what the tech people cheerfully call a "dead zone" - a little telecommunications semi-desert less than 10 miles from the MSU campus.
Well, we screwed up our courage and pulled the plug on the whole shebang. We are now in the bosom of a whole different telecom giant, a representative of which assured us that a new set-up - his set-up - would serve us well at both our home and cottage.
At home, it's a definite improvement. The second big test will come later today, in our first trip this year to the lake house, which also happens to lie in an Internet/cell phone weak spot.
The rep checked his map and assured us of strong signal. We'll see.

When I did my study abroad my biggest culture shock was literally two girls from Quebec telling me how much money they pay for their cellphones every month 😂 And apparently they couldn't even cancel it while they were staying in Spain for six months! Crazy.
And the sad thing is that I'm pretty sure Quebec has some of the most competitive cell plan rates in the country, along with maybe Saskatchewan and Manitoba? Because they have big local telecom companies that compete with the national oligopolies.
Everyone else is stuck with the three major national carriers that collude to keep prices high and competition low. 🙃

Out of curiosity I looked up rankings of rail providers in Europe. While UK providers are known for being expensive they don't appear on T&E's rankings of the worst rail providers. Moreover Sweden's Snälltåget received a score of 0/10 in the reliability category. Are UK trains really the least reliable in Europe or is OP just complaining about train service (something people everywhere love to do)?

#privatized services are not always worse#It depends heavily on the quality of management#Very bad public sector management?#worse service than middling private sector management#Exceptional public sector management?#probably better than private management#Anyway#Singapore has excellent privatized rail#and telecoms#that were formerly nationalized#(and very well managed as public utilities)#I'm sure part of their success is their transit authority that I believe is public
