telugu lesson 2.3: vattulu (a.k.a. even more script!)
NOTE: before you look at this lesson, please check out parts 1 and 2 of the writing lesson.
vattulu are the secondary signs of the consonants. they can only be combined with a) other consonants or b) consonants that have been combined with guninthaalu. there are total of ___ possible combinations of consonants, guninthaalu, and vattulu, and thus there are a total of ___ characters.
most vattulu are just smaller of versions of letters (see the ద and గ vattulu) sans any guninthaalu, however there are some exceptions (see the క, త, and మ vattulu).
[BELOW: image w/hallulu and corresponding vattulu]
[src: http://chotakids.com/telugulearn/telimages/Vattulu_Hallulu.JPG]
the vattulu have names but they’re based on the letter that they correspond with. for example, the secondary sign of the letter ka is called the ka vattu, the secondary sign of the letter ma is called the ma vattu.
2.3.2: combining hallulu with vattulu
this process occurs almost the same way as the process described in 2.2, the only difference being that guninthaalu are combined with the letter itself, whereas vattulu are written underneath or to the right of letters.
a few rules: the ya, ka, and ma vattulu are always written to the right of the letter, but not bigger than the letter. the cha, chha, ba, bha, pa, pha/fa, na, va, sa, la(2), sha vattulu start off underneat. for example: the cha vattu has been elongated to come up the the top of the right side of the letter sa in this letter శ్చ
for example క is combined with a vattu, for example the tha vattu (see: the symbol next to the letter త in the image above), resulting in the letter క్త [kta] (notice that the vattu is under the letter as opposed to connected to it). this letter is used in words such as రక్తం, [raktam] meaning blood. example 2: the letter ద is combined with the ma vattu (see image above) resulting in the letter ద్మ [dma] (notice that the vattu is written to the left of the letter). this letter is used in words such as పద్మ [padma], meaning lotus flower.
there are also doule vattulu, for the example the letter స్త్రీ (sa, combined with ta vattu and ra vattue = stri.)
[BELOW: an image of all combos of the letter క and one vattu. the way the vattulu are written relative to the actual letter is how they should be written.]

telugu lesson 2.2: guninthaalu (a.k.a more script)
link to 2.1; please look at this before you read 2.2
2.2.1: guninthaalu (గుణింతాలు) guninthalu are the secondary signs of vowels. they are combined with consonants to create a composite syllable/sound that can then be combined with more secondary sounds to create an even more complex syllable/sound.
there are 17 guninthaalu; when added to a consonant, the consonants sound becomes combined with the sound of the gunintham’s corresponding vowel, resulting in a third, more complex sound.
the seventeen guninthaalu are as follows: ✓ - talakattu (తలకట్టు); corresponds with: అ, ా- dheergam; corresponds with: ఆ, ిి- gudi; (గుడి corresponds with: ఇ, ీ- gudi dheergham; corresponds with: ఈ, ు- kommu; corresponds with: ఉ, ూ- kommu dheergham; corresponds with: ఊ, ృ- rutvamu; corresponds with: ఋ, ౄ- rootvam dheergam; corresponds with: ఋా, ె- etvamu; corresponds with: ఎ, ే- etvam dheergham; corresponds with: ఏ, ై- aithvamu; corresponds with: ఐ - otvamu; corresponds with: ఒ (see picture below for accurate representation of gunintham) - otvam dheergam; corresponds with: ఓ (see picture below for accurate representation of gunintham) ౌ- owthvamu; corresponds with: ఔ ం- sunna; corresponds with: అం ః- aha; (అః) corresponds with: అః ్- visarga; no corresponding vowel. adding a visarga cuts off the sound. for example, ర = ra, but ర్ = r
BELOW: image of guninthaalu + corresponding vowels + examples, using letter క + names [src:http://chotakids.com/telugulearn/telimages/Vattulu.JPG]
2.2.2: combining consonants and guninthaalu: every consonant has a “half” sound, which is added under a letter for a double consonant sound. these “half” sounds each have a corresponding consonant
examples (one gunintham + one consonant):
క్+ఆ = క+ా = కా
k +aa = kaa
క్+ఋ = క+ృ = కృ
ka+ru = kru
example (two guninthaalu + one consonant):
క్+ఋ+ఎ = క+ృ+ె = కృె
ka+ru+e = kre/kray
BELOW: tables of every possible consonant + one gunintham combo [src:http://chotakids.com/telugulearn/tel_guninthalu_3.php, pgs 1-3]
shoot us an ask if y’all have any questions!
