Special Phil, what's the hardest part of working with the band?
Ehhhhhh... There are always some hurdles, and such is true in many, many occupations, um, jobs, I think. Though I'm not entirely sure what I do is qualified as a " job "... I certainly am not given a payment for this. I think, I think I did ask Copia about this once, an' he said the jobs of ghouls is different from the jobs of peoples, that I don't " need " money for work I was summoned to do, but then, it's like, uhhhh, I got records to buy, right??? An' I wasn't summoned with an' edict in me like all the other ghouls, so, eheheheehehh, I been unemployed, technically, until Papa th' Third's era.
Anyways, for me right now as the time of me typin' all this, uhh, this words, I am thinking the hardest parts of working with the band is twofold. One is, even though they have been at this for years now, I still gotta be there to make sure all them all's human glamours are in place an' proper. The ghoul all y'all call " Dew " still will on occasion get his teeth wrong on purpose. He knows I hate teeth an' he's like " hurrr, Special, check out my fuckin', uhhhh, my fuckin' crab eater seal teeth " an' I'm always like " you know better you maddening beast " or somethin' of that ilk. It's.... is our, our dynamic.
The other hard thing about this tour, specific, particularly, is all them fucking rhinestones. I'm still tryna see if we can just go with real costumes for that, I'm still quite nervous, I think, I don't possess nerves but I think I am nervous. about- you gotta shapeshift every single one, you gotta consider light diffusion, you gotta test everythin' under the, uhhh, the stage's light system- t'make sure everything goes without hitches. It was tricky enough to figure out how to mimic chrome years ago... See, I gotta, I do everythin', all the glamour an' shapeshiftin' and all the ghoul fuckery, I do this first to make sure that, firstly, it is possible for a ghoul to do this things, and secondly, to make sure I am capable to teach these things to the band.
An' this'll be my first time away from Copia in ... a while. 😔

Hello! Would you happen to have any tips on making 'kintype-like vocal sounds? I'm afab with an average feminine voice, and I can't seem to even just growl to myself (instead it sounds like a deep exhale). I'm seeking voice therapy for my gender identity but it'd probably seem weird to ask how to make "animal sounds" when they don't know I'm 'kin. If you know of any tutorials I'd greatly appreciate it! Thanks!
Honestly... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I really don’t have much advice, and I’m very sorry about that. It’s always been something that’s relatively instinctive for me, although I’ve definitely learned to improve and vary my growling sounds over the years. I can tell you how they work, mostly, but I've never really tried to explain how to do it beyond that.
I’m going to sit at my computer making noises and trying to articulate them for like twenty minutes now. Hurrr.
Speaking of which, let’s start there, I guess. I’ll put a diagram of the trachea and vocal structures under the cut to help explain what I’m talking about.
Hurring - a deep, relatively short growl (how short depends how much air you can get in your lungs at a time). I’m relatively sure it’s vocal cord vibration, but I really can’t talk while doing it, and it’s like a full octave below my non-hurring vocal range, so I’m really not sure how I do it. As best I can articulate, how to do it: flex your throat muscles to pull the front of your larynx forward/out (anterior) and put tension on the rest of your throat/vocal cords, then huff a hard breath out. If your throat vibrates and you get a deep growly hrrrrr sort of sound, you’ve got it.
Growling - there are a million ways to do a growl, but the way I do it I can sustain it for a lot longer than hurring, and it takes a lot longer to wear my throat out (I can only hurr so many times in a row before my throat starts hurting). It does sacrifice some of the low pitch, however, since it’s higher in the throat and thus has a smaller chamber of air to vibrate. It’s a uvula motion, not involving the vocal or vestibular folds at all, and it’s basically closing up the back of the throat as much as you can and then forcing air through so the uvula is forced to rapidly vibrate/open and close the passageway, creating a kind of rattling/hissing growl. Tense up the muscles in the floor of your mouth/jaw to accomplish that. If you put a hand on your thyroid cartilage (Adam’s apple, the hard bump you can feel most prominently when you run a hand down the front of your throat), you should feel that move upward as it partially closes off the airway, like it does when you swallow, except it stays elevated instead of dropping back down into place. Then exhale while holding that, and it should produce that rattling growl sound. (I find it helps if I snarl/pull my lips back to bare my fangs teeth, possibly because it helps pull the submandibular muscles tense.)
Hissing - probably the easiest one. Open yer mouth, bare yer teeth, and exhale hard without vibrating your vocal cords. The wider you open your mouth, the more it’ll sound like a cat’s hiss.
Throat-clicking - something I still haven’t found a transcription/onomatopoeia for. If you know what a throat stop is, it’s basically doing that rapidly and repeatedly, with or without vibration of the vocal cords (produces two slightly different sounds). If you don’t, it’s opening and closing the vestibular folds (aka false vocal cords), which are the structures right above your vocal cords that allow you to hold your breath. If you take a breath, hold it for a few seconds, and release it on an exhale, you’ll feel the click of the vestibular folds opening from their sealed position. From there you should hopefully be able to figure out how to open and close them without having to hold your breath, and that’s all throat-clicking is. Like I said, you can either vibrate your vocal cords (hum) or not, and it produces two slightly different sounds.
I think that’s about it for me, at least off the top of my head. Anybody else got anything to add?
Medical diagram of the vocal tract under the cut for clarity about what I’m talking about.
Vocal fold = vocal cord
False vocal fold = vestibular fold (I use the latter name because it’s what i was tested on, but both are correct)

Day 5 of Covid
Well, I was hoping I get tested negative and I can start cleaning my rooms, but nope, Covid has another plan for me. I'm feeling kinda better though, though I still have remnants of flu and abit of sore throat.
Today's breakfast was of left over bread, and honey lemon. Had some mei ji crackers too, because why not. I was hungry. I had... ba chor mee too. Frankly, my bedroom isn't the best place to dine in. It's great to zzz in, but, I don't have a nice sitting area to enjoy my meals at. So, not thattttt much point in ordering super nice food. I'm just biding the time when I can go out and dine in, I don't have to care about getting Covid for, 4 months? Hurrr.
I have random musings during my stay in isolation, which I realise I forgot when I want to pen it out. Hmm, I decided to face my fears, a little. Bit by bit. I noticed myself running away, resisting the thought of meditating, of reading self-help books. Of facing what needs to be faced. I am afraid. To be afraid that even after reading the books, I still feel the fear gripping me into inaction, unable to let my voice be heard, let myself be seen.
I felt like a bit of a failure, after stating out the things that I have tried over the years to overcome my social anxiety. Looks a bit embarrassing to, be at this stage, after trying all these methods, and here I am. A coach in training, a social anxiety veteran. To experience feelings of fear, powerlessness. Maybe I should be compassionate to myself, those are different levels of challenges. It's okay to receive help. Thank you, for helping yourself, Louisa.
Anyway, after stating out the emotions that I am feeling, and why I am feel this way, it doesn't feel so bad after all. I can move forward, by, at least, updating my resume tomorrow. Plan to, after breakfast, update my resume or read the book about overcoming social anxiety, and then prepare for coaching session, if it's possible. See my mum's timing tomorrow.

POAPS: Gregg Marshall
The People’s Champion?
Today’s POAPS can be abbreviated. I doubt anyone reading this blog lacks familiarity with Gregg Marshall, the soon-to-be 54 year old coach at Wichita State, or of his stellar accomplishments at that school and before it at Winthrop.
Marshall got the POAPS treatment in 2011. Last summer, JEOHankins2 provided a 5 year retrospective on Marshall’s copious butt-kicking since that last search.
Two quick comments on my POAPS from 2011:
1) My main worry with Marshall was his lack of high-major experience and how that might hurt his recruiting. Marshall is so much more well-known nationally now, and he can point to a Final Four appearance along with NBA players. As such, recruiting seems like less of a concern.
2) I wrote in 2011 that there was no question Marshall would take the job if offered. Indeed, I viewed him as our “floor” candidate. We all know what happened – as in 2006, NC State said “hold my beer” and smashed through the floorboards, pulling a coach out from somewhere near the water table.
Note that I wrote my POAPS on Marshall in January, months before whatever happened with him and our job. Stories conflict; no one who was not involved directly can know for sure if Marshall in fact was offered our job in 2011 and if so, under what conditions. My educated guess is that Marshall was miffed at being a clear back-up choice after Smart turned down the job, and decided to pull his name from the search.
We know Marshall is a great coach. We know that he marries his skill with just the type of hardscrabble, **** you attitude that would work perfectly here. We know the fans would be over the moon with him. We know that Marshall to NCSU would give us all the satisfaction of telling Jeff Goodman et al. to suck it. Only one question really matters here:
Would he take the job if offered?
No, of course not. He’s making an obscene amount of money now – north of $3 million per year, well north of that per some reports. He’s got easily the best job in his conference, one of the best mid-major jobs period, and as close to lifetime job security as a coach can have, I’d wager. He’s turned down numerous Power 5 openings – most recently, spurning a reported $4 million plus offer from Alabama. He’s spoken more than once about how the grass isn’t always greener with the big Power 5 jobs. Ain’t happening, folks. He’s nah gah dahit. Move on.
And yet...
1) Pete Thamel’s otherwise detestable and banal column on the NC State job (“Unrealistic expectations! Shadow of UNC and Duke! HURRR DURRRRR!!!”) had one interesting nugget: “There is an increasing feeling in the industry that this could be the year that Marshall finally leaves Wichita.”
2) Wichita State is 15-1 in conference this year, 25-4 overall…and squarely on the bubble. Jerry Palm has them last 4 out, for example. Likewise, last year the Shockers went 16-2 in conference, but were relegated to a First Four game in Dayton after being bounced from their conference tournament.
Wichita State has a lot going for it. But the MVC has weakened considerably in recent years to the point where it’s barely even a mid-major conference.
Maybe Marshall is content to be the king of Wichita for his career – and there would be nothing wrong with that. I’m skeptical though. A guy with a supreme ego/competitive drive, who (as Thamel notes) views himself as a peer coach to the best of the best, at some point will want to put that to the test, no? At some point, won’t he chafe at dominating the MVC year in and year out only to end up as an 11 seed?
And if Marshall wants to make the move to a major conference job, the window will not stay open forever. 54 isn’t old, but it’s not young, either.
3) In a 2014 interview, Marshall revealed that State in 2011 was the closest he’d come to leaving Wichita. So the interest was there, and in many ways State is a better spot in 2017 than it was in 2011.
Assume that Marshall does want to go to a high-major conference. What are his options? He’s in Big 12 country. Kansas and Texas look like the best two jobs in that conference, neither is opening up anytime soon. Oklahoma State just hired someone else. I doubt he’s going to the SEC after turning down the big Bama bucks, unless it’s for Kentucky, and Cal ain’t leaving in the near future. He has no ties to the Pac-12 or the Big East. Among the better B1G jobs, Ohio State and Indiana could open soon. Maybe he’s considered for those gigs…or maybe they hire Chris Mack and Chris Holtmann instead. In the ACC, it’s hard to see him in the mix for UNC or Duke down the road. Bottom line: outside of NC State in 2017, I don’t see many obvious landing spots in the bigger leagues.
…
I still don’t think it will happen. I’m not even sure we can come up with the kind of $ needed to land Marshall (we may not need to offer a huge raise, but he sure as hell ain’t taking a pay cut). But impossible? No, not impossible.
One final point: BJD95 at statefansnation (I know, I know) observed, and I agree with this, that we can’t have two “A” candidates. We can quietly see if Marshall and Archie have interest, but we can’t pursue both in earnest. We damn sure cannot pursue Marshall as a backup plan – we know his ego will not take that.
This is the high stakes game that Yow has to play. What if she hears both coaches would be interested, but obviously neither is a sure thing. What does she do? What would you do?
