every time someone asks for book recs i resist the urge to scream “the aurelian cycle” at the top of my lungs. reward my restraint please it’s very difficult

Does anyone else just absolutely lose it for these crumbs of almost-goodness from the worst characters? I don't know why I enjoy it when characters who are unapologetically terrible, selfish, and just... a menace. They're not even anti-heroes most of the time. They're just jerks.

And then they give you a moment. It's the bare minimum, practically nothing, and yet it hits harder than any other good gesture.

I love Power and Annie, not in the sense that Annie ever should’ve chosen him, but in the sense that she really really shouldn’t have and that doesn’t change the fact that he genuinely loved her and they genuinely cared for each other and meshed in a way she and Lee didn’t.

Like Power truly only brings out the worst in Annie. He makes her more ambitious, yes, better at flying, sure, but also less empathetic to others. More utilitarian. Being with Power LITERALLY gives Annie the tools to become politically powerful. To be an Atreus type figure who is always choosing the greater good but has this warped idea of what the greater good even is.

Meanwhile, Annie IS the right choice for Power. She makes him less selfish, more mindful of who he’s hurting when he chooses the greater good. He becomes someone who, instead of making the decision that’s best for him, allows his reputation to be the main casualty in his quest for the greater good. Like Power never cared about seeming like a good person, and when he’s fighting against Ixion and to protect Annie, that’s his greatest asset. She gives him purpose and drive outside of revenge.

And it makes him one of the most tragic figures I’ve ever read because you see his capacity for and will to change, all while knowing that what he’s sacrificed in that change his sense of self-preservation— which before, would’ve kept him alive at the expense of others.

Blah blah blah anyway the point is the choice between Power and Lee is the choice between being Powerful within the system and Liberation

finished the aurelian cycle about 4 days ago now and i still haven’t stopped thinking about it. furysong wrecked me and why is there no fandom for this series 😭😭it deserves so much hype

the fact that NOT. A SINGLE. TIME. during 3 books Annie and Lee said "i love you" by specifically articulating these three words to each other, and neither did Delo and Griff, is HUNTING me. just something about that that's so powerful, it's the fact that YOU AND I AND EVERYBODY AND THEIR DRAGONS KNOW i'm in love with you since forever, there's no point in formal verbal confirmation. it's about those thousand ways to say "i love you" without saying these specific three words and about actions that speak louder than words, there's no confusion wtf was that - that was the loudest "i love you" ever again and again and again and i know it and you will SEE me answering "i love you too" over and over and over. oh Rosaria Munda, your mind is brilliant

Annie and Lee's is probably quality time, which explains why they are so miserable for two books and half of the third. But then Farhall!

reading fireborne right now and this is the first time i've felt physically torn apart by a piece of literature it's so beautiful and so painful and the more i read the worse it gets for them

If I had a penny for every book about a boy of noble birth who watched his whole family be killed in front of him and narrowly avoided death himself, ran away and hid in an orphanage before someone unaware of his true identity recruits him into the regime that murdered his family (said regime presents the idea of everyone being equal while in reality being deeply flawed) and now has to work alongside people who would likely kill him if they knew who he really was, I’d have two pennies, which isn’t a lot but it’s weird that it happened twice

My Rough interpretation of the three main dragon breeds from the Aurelian Cycle Trilogy. I might mess with the designs more in sketches later as I reread the series. I feel like I especially struggled to nail down a color I was happy with for the Aurelian in the middle. For a first go at their designs without roughing out thumbnail ideas first I'm pretty happy with them. I gave up a little on coloring towards the end 😅. I need help finding a way to increase my love for the coloring process. I like to sketch and line and then I start to lose interest.
