thinking about dean growing up and putting everything before himself. hunting and his brother and his dad and his dad’s revenge quest for their mom. he doesn’t matter. he is entirely irrelevant. thinking about dean internalising this as just what you do, just how people behave and how they should behave. him viewing selfish as the worst thing you can possibly be.

then thinking about sam growing up and fighting. brave enough to challenge their father and rebel against him and voice something different, brave enough to focus on what he wants. dean seeing this and it stings - he could never do that. how is sam acting like that? he can’t believe that’s the right way to behave. so sam must be selfish, just in believing he has any right to his own life.

dean sublimates himself for the family and expects sam to do the fame, and his resentment and jealousy that sam doesn’t turns into anger and making sam out to be the mean one, the one in the wrong. and this never goes away. this is always what dean levels at sam - that he’s selfish, that in wanting to make his own choices he’s rejecting their family, rejecting dean……. awful. toxic. evil evil message to send to sam. entirely in character. dean wants to prioritise sam, would save him over the world. but he doesn’t care what sam wants.

selflessness isn’t always a charming character trait. it’s not the same thing as a generosity of spirit and it’s definitely not the same thing as being caring. sometimes selflessness just means you’re incapable of prioritising your life and incapable of understanding how anyone else could or should prioritise theirs. sometimes it means you still act selfishly, you just convince yourself you were objectively in the right, because doing something actually for yourself is unthinkable. sometimes it means you think the very act of having wants and boundaries is selfish, no matter whether they’re yours or anyone else’s.

anyway… thoughts on dean’s specific brand of awfulness regarding sam. what does it matter to him what sam actually wants? since when did it ever matter in the winchester household what anyone wanted? dean had to deal with things he didn’t want for the mission (for john). sam has to deal with things he doesn’t want for the mission (for dean). augh. the cycles

So I got a couple comments on chapter 2 of my most recent Frostbek series addition, and idk if they’re actually annoyed or not, but like. One guy was saying how they’d think The Other would actually react *this way* instead of the way I wrote him in the chapter, and another person under their comment agreed and like.

Dude, I’m sorry that my interpretation of The Others relationship with Frost in my fic in my series is different than your interpretation. But I’m not writing him this way to be like “oh he didn’t intend to hurt Frost and will be upset that he did :(“.

Like, the reason why The Other initially apologized to Frost when he realized he had accidentally hurt him was because Torbek was partially in control still (and fully gained control shortly after). The reason why The Other is hurting Frost now—intentionally or otherwise—is because he no longer has Torbek reining him in like before. He sees Frost as his, an object more than a person, a thing that he can do with whatever he pleases. It’ll probably never be mentioned in the remaining 2-3 fics, since idk how I’d even bring it up naturally, but Frost does in fact have a couple of deeper cuts underneath his robes that will never quite heal right, and more or less become scars (saying this as someone who had relatively minor injuries that became scars bc they didn’t quite heal right for some reason).

The Other enjoys the fact that he can mark Frost however he wants, thinking that Frost wouldn’t ever tell Gricko out of fear.

Of course, if you still don’t like this interpretation, then you can just. Idk. Not read it? The back arrow is right there. It’s free. Nobody is forcing you to read a fic if you feel a character is ooc.

An interesting thing we don’t really go into is how, even after the TVA workers have their memories shown to them, they still don’t actually remember their lives on the timeline.

B-15 said “I looked happy” not “I remember being happy”, Mobius watched his family with admiration but no recognition, C-20 talked about her time in the bar like a revelation but one without any nostalgia attached to it, Brad acted more like a doppelgänger who bumped his twin off and stole his life rather than a guy reclaiming his own, etc.

It’s very subtle but it really adds to the feeling of them genuinely being seperate entities from their sacred timeline selves. Like, Mobius was right when he said it’s not his life, this [the TVA] is.
