Please shut up about Marvel having too much continuity
That’s a phrase I hear thrown around endlessly by fans, ‘fans’ and comic creators themselves.
Continuity is bad we need to get rid of it or cut it down because it’s too intimidating to readers.
 This is provably untrue.
Exhibit A: The Marvel Cinematic Universe
The MCU has been running since 2008. As of this writing there are 20 movies in the MCU with more on the way and I don’t even know how many short films and episodes of various TV shows.
Now sure, the movies are mostly self-contained and don’t require you to check out any of the other stuff. The same is true of the Netflix MCU TV shows
True but the other TV shows (like the long running Agents of SHIELD) aren’t so self contained. The Netflix shows do trade off of events in other Netflix shows. And even if you confine it to the movies you still have those 20 movies.
And sorry but if you wanna check out the latest of the 2-3 Marvel movies out in any given year being asked to watch twenty films  is a lot of continuity to ask of someone. Far more than is reasonable and honestly for a new viewer it might as well be as intimidating as 50 years of comics.
And the harsh truth is... a lot of people just don’t do that when they go see a Marvel movie. But it’s also true that most people seem to like Marvel movies.
 How is this possible?
How could they possibly enjoy the latest instalment in a film franchise without having seen everything before?
Well this video about Avengers Assemble raises two key explanations.
The gist of things is that Avengers Assemble in part traded off of the modern way we consume media and trusted people could Google or Youtube what they needed to know to ‘get’ the movie. See the endless number of articles and videos explaining what audiences ‘need to know’ before they check out the latest MCU film or revealing telling things in movies they’ve already seen. An example would be all the articles explaining who Thanos was after his mid-credits tease in Avengers Assemble.
However the video’s other more salient point is that Avengers Assemble, like the movies leading into it and in fact the movies after it, was actually written to be accessible on it’s own.
Sure you get a more rewarding experience if you checked out everything beforehand, but it’s not necessary.
Even in a bonanza like Infinity War, in 2018 everyone is aware of who most of those characters are in the first place and even if they aren’t they know who a few of them are and can thus get invested in the movie for them.
It’s kind of like every movie is written with the belief that it’s someone’s first...which is exactly how Marvel used to write all of their comics!
Exhibit B: The DC Animated Universe
Before Marvel made film history DC made animation history by replicating the shared superhero universe of DC comics in animation.
Comprised primarily of Batman the Animated Series, Superman the Animated Series, Batman Beyond, the Zeta Project, Static Shock and Justice League (with some seasons rebranded under different names and status quos) the DCAU lasted from the early 1990s until the mid 2000s with easily in excess of 100 episodes between the shows. Which doesn’t even count the tie-in comics, video games and more significantly four animated films.
All of these shared continuity in particular in the Justice League TV show where of course virtually every  DC character from earlier in the DCAU cropped up alongside a massive amount of new ones.
What made things even more complicated was that Justice League was released after Batman Beyond, a show set in the distant future of the DCAU, meaning the show was even drawing upon continuity from stories that chronologically took place way later.
Confusing right?
Well...not if you go by the ratings, critical acclaim and strong fan following.
Let me stress the DCAU predated the easier access to the internet we have today, it wasn’t until the DCAU was wrapping up that its various shows began to get complete home releases.
It is extremely unlikely that everyone or even the majority of the viewership of any given DCAU show were fully aware or up to scratch on the continuity of the DCAU as a whole.
And yet the DCAU was extremely successful.
In fact Justice League was so successful that it was renewed twice  after originally intended to wrap up the DCAU as a whole. And both attempts drew upon older continuity, especially the second of these two attempts.
Exhibit C: The market for superhero info books
Fun fact, I’ve worked for D.K. books which has made a lot of comic book based info books diving into the (mostly in-universe) history of the various characters.
The first of those books I know of was Spider-Man: the Ultimate Guide published about oh...in 2001.
It’s fourth and newly updated edition was released last year.
In fact with the surge of superhero popularity D.K. had to make more guidebooks than ever before, so many in fact that they had to drop some.
Here is some inside baseball but to capitalize upon Thor: Ragnarok there was supposed  to be an ultimate guide book all about Thor but due to producing stuff for Spider-Man, Guardians of the Galaxy, Wonder Woman, Black Panther and Justice league the project had to be dropped.
Guidebooks about individual franchises were not even the only types of info books D.K. did.
They’ve recently published what amounts to an encyclopaedia about the entire Marvel Universe since the 1940s!
And by the way, these books aren’t aimed primarily at the established/older hardcore fan.
They are aimed at a mass audience, chiefly kids who’ve maybe seen the movies, cartoons or read a little about the characters and now want to go deeper. And they are sold in general book stores as well as comic book speciality stores.
And they’ve been doing this since 2001...internationally!
So OBVIOUSLY there is thriving market for the large in depth histories of these characters. Clearly people love the idea of there being wider lore for them to explore.
It’s not even a phenomenon exclusive to comic book nerds, just ask Lord of the Rings fans!
Exhibit D: the DC Universe
If you count absolutely everything, there has been in truth at least six  different versions of the DC universe since it began in 1938.
That means on six separate occasions DC has chucked out aspects of their history and in theory made it more accessible to readers because hey, there is less history for you to read now. Their biggest attempt of recent years was in the New 52 in 2011.
And yet in general Marvel has systemically outsold DC comics and especially did so during the New 52 when the DC as whole suffered massive sales losses linked in no small part to their decision to reboot their universe and throw out the history readers had invested in.
Exhibit E: Soap operas
Soap operas that are intended to last indefinitely rarely (if ever) have facilities to enable viewers to catch up on older episodes across their massive sometimes 1000+ episode count. And even if they did such options wouldn’t have existed before the 21st century when DVDs and digital media and recordable TV isn’t what it is today.
Yet these soap opera kept running and running and running sometimes for decades?
How? They couldn’t have maintained the same viewership across that entire time.
Could it be that the new viewers of these soap operas just tuned in and rolled with it/the soap opera were written in a relatively accessible way so that they continued the ongoing plots whilst allowing new viewers to jump on ship at any time?
 Exhibit F: The 1980s-1990s
The notion of Marvel’s long continuity being a bad thing, of being a problem hampering them is dependent upon the idea that after a point there is just too much  history in the way of readers to jump on board. The Marvel Universe has lasted since 1961 after all*.
The foolishness in this mentality is that it wholly fails to recognize that catching up on and keeping up with even 20-25 years worth of comic book history is such a daunting task that it might as well be 55 years!
And yet in the 1980-early 1990s the comic book industry was over all healthier than it is now despite there already being a huge amount of history and lore to most Marvel characters.
In fact easily the most popular Marvel franchise of the 1990s was the X-Men which was THE most complicated and convoluted franchise Marvel had at the time.
Compounding the challenge new fans allegedly had to face was the fact that reprints, trades, info books and internet based resources to help them catch up or learn the wider histories either didn’t exist or weren’t what they are now.
There comes a point when getting a grip on 55 years of history when you have endless resources to help you do that and instant access to those stories on your phone  is infinitely easier trying that with 20-25 years of history when you have next to nothing.
But there were MORE comic book readers in the 1980s-1990s than now and they were able to jump into the long running narratives decades into their histories.
How is this possible?
Because back then Marvel practiced a mantra preached by Stan Lee himself.
Every comic is someone’s first.
So every comic pushed the characters stories on but also made sure they invited new readers along for the ride too.
 Exhibit G: Myself
When I was 12 I began watching the Justice League cartoon show and fell in love with all those characters, only slowly realizing that the Superman and Batman of this show were the same ones I’d seen on Batman the Animated Series and those 6 episodes of Superman I’d seen years ago. I didn’t even know who Darkseid and Brainiac were? It didn’t matter they were clearly big deal bad guys and I loved their 2 episodes in Justice League. I loved Justice League Unlimited even more even though I didn’t realize it was capitalizing upon plot threads set up in yet more Superman episodes I’d never seen.
When I was 11 one of my best friends who was nowhere near as much into comic books as I was showed me his new book. Spider-Man the Ultimate Guide. In it was pages and pages about Spider-Man, his powers, his costumes, his friends, his foes and his history over all. I needed my own copy of that book and re-read it multiple times because wow I didn’t know Spider-Man was once buried alive and there was a Spider-Man in the future and this one time Spider-Man battled the Juggernaut and it was awesome and this other time Spider-Man turned into the Lizard and the Hulk!
When I was 10 I read my first ever Spider-Man comic book and began following the character religiously.
This comic book was Peter Parker: Spider-Man #75.
This was the very last part of the very last story arc in the single most convoluted Spider-Man story of all time, the Clone Saga, with even that one issue drawing upon and referencing continuity from 27 years earlier!
And yet it hooked me.
All those things hooked me.
Because it’s not about how much continuity you have.
It’s about how you choose to use it or not use it when crafting a compelling story.

AND THEN THERE’S THE WAY DEAN LOOKS AT CAS LET’S GET SOME OF THAT IN HERE PLEEEEEASE
-
04:51
it stresses me out when people wash dishes but only rinse using the dirty water not fresh tap water
-
04:53
they’re about to send john back, he’s holding mary’s hand
all the rainbows behind dean’s head
betcha he’s thinkin about cas
Tumblr media
-
04:56
john: “i love you both, so much”
dean...................
Tumblr media
-
“i love you too”
OH MY HEART
he says it ......he never used to say it to anyone
-
04:59
Tumblr media
YEEEEE
BUT ALSO THIS ONLY LASTED 0.5 SECONDS WHY
but also???????
TALL GUY = SAM
PLAID GIRL = DEAN
COAT GIRL = CAS
IS ANYONE ELSE GETTING THIS
WHY DIDN’T THIS SHOT LAST LONGER SO PEOPLE WOULD BE ABLE TO SEE WITHOUT PAUSING
CURSE YOU EDITORS
-
05:02
so....... that end scene where john’s like “i’m on my way back, i’ll see you soon”
was that meant to be in the past, 2003 era? the flip phone would say so, but his visible age kind of confuses matters
i mean i get that it’s hard to make someone look 16 years younger
but still
unsure about that
-
05:04
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm it’s over
i dunno
that was definitely a special and important episode, and i appreciated seeing this side of john, this is gonna make it way easier to write fanfic of him without the story ending up as a trauma survival fic
but
i was kind of underwhelmed
things i rEALLY REALLY WANTED that didn’t happen:
john actually reacting to dean saying they made friends with an angel (and a werewolf, a vampire, demons, etc etc)
john meeting cas
cas being part of that family meal (i get that the point was he was 2003!cas and not there, but still)
jack being in this even a little bit??
and as the story went on and reached the end, what it really lacked, for me, was a comparison where we can then see how john/mary & max/her crush = dean/cas...........and that just didn’t happen
i think it just ended too soon, really
and there was a lot more they could’ve done with the altered timeline, could’ve brought a whooooooooole lot back from past seasons and just made it a smorgasbord of nostalgia
i get that it was focused solely on john, which gave it an emotional core, so there’s not actually a problem there, i loved that
but it felt kind of dull and slow and....... soupy..........?
(i just mean. the emotional feeling in my brain as i think about it. feels like soup. specifically pumpkin soup. warm and spicy and goopy and nutritious but ultimately not very filling)
then again, if the pacing had been sped up, i would’ve complained it was too rushed. so there’s no winning, it was probably fine ?
i think my favourite part was the kids. i loved the kids. i love the lil gay romance going there. i loved the fact it was a destiel/team free will parallel (even if that part of it was OVER SO DAMN QUICKLY MOST PEOPLE MISSED IT). i loved the kid in the hat, he reminded me a lot of the actor thomas brodie-sangster, and also johnathan byers from “stranger things”
also enjoyed sam vs. the serial killer clown, and that whole aspect of hunting that we haven’t seen in a while, felt very nostalgic
also enjoyed 2003!cas, but was both distressed and frustrated by him fighting dean and then NOT GETTING ANY CLOSURE ON THAT WHATSOEVER. the point was to make dean and sam realise they really needed to send john back, so essentially, in some respect, they did choose cas being their friend over john being around, but that part of the overall problem was never mentioned at all, cas wasn’t mentioned at all after the fight
i’m just looking forward to coda fics that start where this episode leaves off, and dean talks to cas, because i am craving that SO FUCKING BADLY i can’t even express. like. it’s becoming maddening. i just. want. them. to have. a conversation
and the black guy dying at the start?? and the other black kid running away from the ghost and never being seen again? and besides the unnamed diner guy offering info on skip day, being the ONLY PEOPLE OF COLOUR IN THE ENTIRE STORY??? NOT COOL, not a fan >:{ (still better than it used to be, but soooooooooo many white people. so many. so. many)
anyway. um
so that wasn’t my favourite episode, but not because it was bad, but because it didn’t live up to expectations. i tried not to have any expectations (i really tried) but there were just... basic things this episode needed that i felt it was lacking (*cough* cas *cough*), and i can’t really shake that feeling
HOWEVER, having seen 2003!cas be the thoughtless drone that he was, i can appreciate just HOW MUCH character development has happened while he’s been around, which.... i suppose, is a sort of nod to his entire existence ???
anyway, 9/10, and a big ol shrug
but yeah. seeing john be kind and understanding was amazing (and completely changes how i’m gonna write him in my fics in the future, since he’s probably gonna be in the fic instead of just mentioned) and having him say he’s proud of dean and he loves him was just a super nice treat c:
sam being emotional is the best, too. sam confronting his feelings 10/10
i just. i want aaaaaall of this. but with cas. i really want that. so goddamn much. ;~;

They went public in 1980 to instant economic success. Over the next few years, Apple delivered new computer systems including ingenious graphical user interfaces, such as the initial Macintosh, revealed with the seriously well-known advert 1984. Nonetheless, the high rate of its products as well as restricted application library created problems, as did power battles between execs. In 1985, Wozniak departed Apple amicably, while Jobs resigned to discovered NeXT, taking some Apple colleagues with him.As the market for individual computers increased and developed through the 1990s, Apple lost considerable market share to the lower-priced duopoly of Microsoft Windows on Intel PC duplicates. The rest of the independent favorite Enter The Gungeon may not be quite what the players were waiting. But it's still an exciting adventure. In this one, players embark on a lateral scroll adventure, rather than up and down, eliminating enemies using a variety of creative weapons. Despite the change of perspective, Gungeon is always a game that raises the challenge. And it looks just as charming as the original title. Just make sure you have a controller for this - these contraction skills will be needed to survive the subsequent steps. Consider this as a warning.
grinding wheel
It is difficult to describe the last effort of the studio that has released the episode below and Swords and Sworcery. It contains role play elements and the kind of classic game puzzle game, similar to Puzzle Quest. However, he has several monsters and a hero who is not afraid to decide and cut them into dice. It also has a hand drawn style that stands out from other Apple Arcade offers. It's really a unique effort and it's worth trying.
Sayonara Wild Hearts
In Sayonara Wild Hearts, players will guide a virtual heroine through several scenarios, fighting dangerous enemies while capturing all the hearts she can find. It's a superb game with a memorable soundtrack and kind of engaging gameplay that attracts people to more. Wild Hearts is definitely worth falling in love when you take it.
What is golf?
Call this game Golf with a torsion would be huge euphemism. What is golf? Is a parody based on the physics of all other golf games available. The game is a silly and absurd puzzle game that requires players to take up a series of ridiculous challenges. Players can play golf on a horse, a bird and even a house while browsing obstacles. The game gradually passes from golf as we know it to something indescribable.
Cat Quest II
Cat Quest II is an open-world action RPG that takes place in a world entirely filled with cats and dogs. The game takes place at the height of a war between the cats of Felingard and the dogs of the Empire Lupus. Players endorses the role of the kings of each country as they work together to recover their thrones. Players can explore each kingdom alone or in cooperation with another player. The game offers a variety of monsters and areas to explore in a unique art style.
Mutazione
Mutazione is a mutant sheet rather similar to Night in the Woods. The players play the role of Kai as she sails in a post-apocalyptic world and the gossip of his small town. Kai begins to take care of his sick grandfather in a city of mutants called Mutazione. Once players reach the city, they have to navigate in an immersive history and take care of the gardens scattered in the region to maintain balance and peace in Mutazione.
pilgrims
Pilgrims is an adventure game of cards point clicking. The goal of the game is to navigate the world and find as many solutions as possible to the stories of the different characters you meet. This is not a game that is intended to be beaten but rather replayed again and again. Players use cards to solve problems and progress as their characters argue in the world of the game. There is no correct way to follow for players to explore as they please.
Collector Garden
The World of Manifold Garden is vaguely based on Mr. C. Escher's work. The game plays with the concepts of physics, space and geometry to create a world that repeats itself to infinity. Players can manipulate gravity to solve puzzles and change the appearance of the world around them. At each level of the game, players will have to cultivate a garden to advance in the world and earn new perspectives.
Lego Builder's trip
Lego Builder's Journey combines the creative aspects of other Lego games with a poetic narrative and the meditative possibilities of building a new LEGO creation. The game uses a gameplay based on puzzles to move the players through a series of construction challenges. Throughout this time, the game plays soothing music while accentuating the importance of creativity and game. Players can create a variety of LEGO creations to move in adventure and gain some inspiration for constructions Actual LEGO.
Map of Darkness
If you enjoyed the Cartoon Network Emps of Adventure, Card of Darkness will seem familiar to you. The game was developed by Zach Gage with the help of Odventure Time's Creator Pendleton Ward. The game is an animated adventure-puzzle game. Players need to navigate the world and solve numbers-based cards puzzles to retrieve the dark card. The game offers five bosses, eight environments and tons of unique monsters and equipment that players can use and with whom interact.

Home Entertainment Consumer Guide: March 28, 2019
3 NEW TO NETFLIX
"Kung Fu Hustle" "The Lives of Others" "A Separation"
8 NEW TO BLU-RAY/DVD
"Aquaman"
At its best, James Wan's "Aquaman" is a live-action cartoon, complete with armies astride seahorses and sharks. It has a fantastic cast, including great supporting work from Nicole Kidman, Patrick Wilson, and Willem Dafoe. It's refreshingly goofy from a company (DC) that too often takes itself way too seriously. Really, the only problem with "Aquaman" is one common to the genre: bloat. There's no reason for this movie to be 2.5-hours long, and you can feel its charm washing away as the length sets in. My kids were excited for about an hour and it almost felt more like an obligation to finish it. I recommend watching it in installments. And focus on the fun stuff.

"Detour" (Criterion)
An acknowledged classic of Poverty Row, Edward G. Ulmer's 1945 noir is as pitch black as the genre comes. Restored recently after years of people watching degraded copies, "Detour" has probably never looked this good. As expert Noah Isenberg explains in an excellent special feature, "Detour" was made for almost no money in roughly a week, depending on who you believe. It's a stunning piece of work, containing one of the best femme fatale performances of all time from Ann Savage. Ulmer and Savage's take on the role is instantly mesmerizing. Gone are the typically glamorous looks of the femme, replaced by grit and sweat and dirt. Savage's character feels threatening in such a perfect way that we know the minute our protagonist crosses paths with her, he's doomed.

"I Wanna Hold Your Hand" (Criterion)
Robert Zemeckis has been working with American nostalgia since his first film, 1978's "I Wanna Hold Your Hand," now available on a bonus-packed Criterion release. The film itself is a sweet comedy about not just Beatlemania but those years in which one had the time and energy to commit their lives to something like a band. A cousin of "American Graffiti," this ensemble piece is about a bunch of teenagers trying to get to "The Ed Sullivan Show" on the night that The Beatles would make TV and music history. It's a light-hearted comedy that doesn't hit every mark but is also truly hard to dislike. And it's particularly interesting as a stepping stone in the careers of both Zemeckis and Spielberg, who get together with Bob Gale for a fantastic special feature on this release about the making of the film.

"If Beale Street Could Talk"
This might be the final great film of 2018 to be released on Blu-ray. There are some interesting films that came out the final few weeks of last year still to hit the market ("The Mule," "Bumblebee," others) but this is the last essential movie, one that you really need to see before you can close the book and move on to 2019. Barry Jenkins' adaptation of James Baldwin's book has been written about so many times since its TIFF debut, on this site alone, that there's not much I could possibly add to the conversation. Read my TIFF review. Read Odie's brilliant 4-star review. Read about it in our ten best. Read my interviews with Barry Jenkins and the stars of the film, KiKi Layne and Stephan James. I hold this movie very close to my heart and will for the rest of my life. It's gorgeous, riveting filmmaking and a true must-own on Blu-ray, especially given it has a commentary track by Jenkins himself.

"Mary Poppins Returns"
Everyone involved in this movie should give Emily Blunt a gift. Her prodigious charm is really the fuel that keeps this film moving (with no offense to Ben Whishaw and Emily Mortimer, who are always good). Blunt gets the film over its several dull passages, although even she can't save original songs that sound fine in the film but that I dare anyone to hum a section of outside of it. Like so many of the Disney live-action films, there's a magic missing here - the magic that allows a movie to live on in imagination when you're done watching it. This one is better than some (I'm still angry about "Alice in Wonderland" and "Beauty and the Beast") but that's mostly just because those movies didn't have a performer as charismatic and committed as Emily Blunt. For the record, my five-year-old STRONGLY disagrees. He loves this movie. But even he can't sing a song from it.

"Perfect Blue"
Satoshi Kon is an interesting enigma in that his name isn't as much of a household one as Hayao Miyazaki or Brad Bird but those who do know his work absolutely adore him. Kon's ambitious, visually breathtaking style is arguably never more brilliantly realized than in this 1999 masterpiece FINALLY getting a Blu-ray release for its 20th anniversary. That it took this long for a movie that so many people love to even get an HD release is telling in terms of how Kon's reputation doesn't seem to be at the level he deserves.

"Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse"
For months, it felt like Disney's "Incredibles 2" was the runaway favorite to take the Oscar for Best Animated Film. Who could have guessed that an animated superhero movie, which is usually the genre of straight-to-DVD fare, could be good enough to topple the highest grossing animated film of all time? Make no mistake -- this is no ordinary superhero movie. This is no ordinary animated movie. It may only be a few months old, but it feels like a classic already, a movie that I know I'll see at least a dozen times over the course of my lifetime. It gets richer and feels more ambitious each time I see it. This is a very strong edition of the HECG and I hope you got a nice refund from the IRS because this one is a must-own too. It also comes with some fantastic special features, including a cut of the film that includes several scenes that never got past the sketch phase re-cut into the movie.

"Sunflower" by Post Malone and Swae Lee "Familia" by Nicki Minaj & Anuel AA (feat. Bantu) All-New Original Short "Spider-Ham: Caught In a Ham"
"Wanda" (Criterion)
I'll admit to not remembering having heard of Barbara Loden's "Wanda" until the Criterion edition showed up in my mailbox. It's a stunning movie, a bleak de-glamorization of the criminal life. A blue-collar woman named Wanda can barely make ends meet and has her kids taken away in a divorce. She basically stumbles into the life of a petty criminal, and the two form a strange, mesmerizing Bonnie and Clyde duo. He's abusive. She seems constantly uncertain, almost as if she could just wander off the face of the Earth. It's Loden's only film and it's a fascinating piece of work, almost akin to Cassavetes in its dirty, sweaty, naturalistic style. It's a shame Loden never got to make another movie, but I love that this one is getting appraised again a half-century after it was produced.

So that whole ‘Spider-Man is about youth’ thing
I know some people place a shitton of stock into the words of the professionals so let me just throw a few things at you.
Peter David is one of, possibly the, most accomplished writer under Marvel’s employ in terms of the breadth and acclaim garnered by his bibliography. This includes the critically acclaimed Death of Jean DeWolff storyline and the fan favourite Spider-Man 2099 series, which is about a very much ADULT character who is the Spider-Man of his timeline. He doesn’t think Spider-Man is about youth or that there is anything wrong with him being married. In fact he stated that the series as a whole spinning its wheels from the time of the Master Planner Trilogy up until the marriage when something really different happened. He began reading Spider-Man at some point before the original publication of Amazing Spider-Man #100 back in the early 1970s.
J.M. DeMatteis has written both critically acclaimed Spider-Man stories and stories which are the most layered and dense in terms of their theme and depth of human psychology. This has included the iconic Kraven’s Last Hunt. He also does not think Spider-Man is about youth or that he should not be married. In fact he made the marriage a vital part of his most revered storyline and utilized it a lot in his various other stories. He began reading Spider-Man at some point during the original John Romita Senior run of Spider-Man.
Tom DeFalco is former Editor-in-Chief of Marvel comics, former editor of Spider-Man, has written a very well regarded and vitally important run of Amazing Spider-Man in the 1980s and followed that up with two more runs (on Spectacular and Amazing Spider-Man) in the 1990s before embarking on a near (unbroken) 150 issue long run on fan favourite Spider-Girl. The latter by the way is currently the longest running (at least without substantial gaps) Spider-Man spin-off character and also the female Marvel character who’s had the most consistently longest running solo title ever.
He is also the author of the well reviewed 2001 book ‘Spider-Man the Ultimate Guide’ which was for it’s time the single most comprehensive information book about Spider-Man ever published. During his tenure as writer of Amazing Spider-Man he and Ron Frenz he established Mary Jane Watson as knowing Spider-Man’s secret identity and introduced readers to Spidey’s black costume, later establishing it as an alien symbiote. These and other elements from his run have made their way into other media and been constants in the Spider-Man series ever since.
Tom DeFalco has inferred on more than one occasion that his favourite era of Spider-Man was when Spider-Man was in High School. This makes a certain amount of sense because he first began reading Spider-Man in the early 1960s...specifically with Amazing Fantasy #15.
But did you know that Tom DeFalco ALSO doesn’t think Spider-Man is about youth. In fact he once specifically said Spider-Man isn’t about youth but responsibility, going on to say that the more responsibility Spider-Man has the more interesting the character is. When Spider-Man was originally married in the 1980s Tom DeFalco was against it...at first. He then changed his mind and became one of its biggest champion among other Marvel creators.
Tom DeFalco’s disbelief in the ideas that Spider-Man is about youth and that the marriage was antithetical to the character are evident in the fact that he proposed and implemented a storyline intended to make Spider-Man a parent and his creation of Spider-Girl (Peter Parker’s daughter) was partially done as a fulfillment of this idea.
Finally there is another Marvel creator to be discussed.
His name is Stan Lee.
Stan Lee is the co-creator  of Spider-Man. He also co-created the Fantastic Four, the Incredible Hulk, Iron Man, the Mighty Thor, Ant-Man, the Wasp, the Avengers and many other Marvel characters and properties which have endured to this very day.
His Spider-Man credits include literally the first 100 issues of Amazing Spider-Man, Amazing Fantasy #15, and various Spider-Man annuals.
Within those issues are stories which are regarded as undeniably the most iconic in Spider-Man’s history and the unquestionably most adapted source material for various Spider-Man media adaptations.
They include:
The origin of the character adapted and referenced in...pretty much every film and TV show about the character
The Master Planner Trilogy, regarded by many as the greatest Spider-Man story of all time. It inspired parts of the Playstation game Spider-Man 2000 and an episode of the Spectacular Spider-Man Animated Series, both of which were critically acclaimed.
Amazing Spider-Man #42 the introduction of Spider-Man’s most famous love interest Mary Jane, an introduction so iconic it’s been homaged, parodied and referenced ad infinitum and adapted into two different cartoon shows
Spider-Man No More which once again has been referenced numerous times in various comics and other media (Marvel affiliated or otherwise) due to how iconic it is and was the major inspiration for Spider-Man 2, regarded as the best Spider-Man film of all time as well as at the time one of the best superhero/comic book films of all time.
Stan Lee for a number of years also wrote the Amazing Spider-Man Newspaper Strip which has remained in syndication ever since.
Stan Lee has to my knowledge NEVER  claimed Spider-Man is about youth.
It was in Stan Lee’s run that Spider-Man AGED  to the point where he graduated high school and attended college.
In a letters page Stan Lee in response to a statement about Spider-Man’s hypothetical child joked that the character wasn’t even married yet.
During Stan Lee’s run Peter Parker considered proposing to his girlfriend Betty Brant in only issue #30 of the series. Much later around issue #100 Peter was seriously considering marrying his girlfriend Gwen Stacy and was making plans for the sake of that future.
Stan Lee has gone on record numerous times that he created Gwen Stacy to be Peter’s ultimate love interest and because he believed she’d make the perfect wife for him.
Int he 1980s Stan Lee when asked by a fan if Peter and Mary Jane could get married opted to make that happen in the Newspaper strip and inquired about making it happen in the comics too.
Before the abolition of the marriage in the comics, Stan Lee in an interview was asked if he felt that Spider-Man being married in any way negatively affected the character. He didn’t feel that was the case.
After the marriage was abandoned in the main comics universe the newspaper strip did the same thing...temporarily. It eventually went back to featuring a married Spider-Man and has remained so ever since.
Now...call me crazy...but it seems to me that all of that would seem to possibly imply that maybe...just maybe...
SPIDER-MAN ISN’T SUPPOSED TO BE ABOUT FUCKING YOUTH!!!!!!!!
