Speechless...
I am…beyond touched, humbled and just plain overwhelmed at the messages and replies and reblogs I received in response to my sad post last night.
Some of your words made me cry tears of joy at their kindness and I did not for a second expect so many people to be so concerned if I stay or go.
Truthfully Twitter has been the main source of the problem - some of you may have seen the cringeworthy display from the people personally victimising me yesterday (thread now deleted and no I really don’t have more to say about it); and yet fewer of you may be aware that I receive a lot of snide DM hate for the Abigail stuff over there too. I was not prepared for how different a place it is from Tumblr and it really knocked me.
I felt like everything I wrote was tainted by my “disgusting” kinks and shipping Abi, even though the vast majority of my work is still Hannigram, so I wanted to give up trying. I felt like finally standing up for myself to those people was doing my image harm and people maybe wanted nothing to do with me - the outspoken bitch.
All your lovely, sincere support made me see it was not the case - it is just Twitter is a judgemental, nasty mess and I forgot that I had people who love me here on Tumblr and Ao3. You guys make it all better and although I do need to step back from my personal Twitter and to a lesser extent Tumblr, I do not want to go for good.
I want to get back into writing and I have even managed to do all the posts I was neglecting this morning too. Thank you from the bottom of my bruised heart to everyone who helped <3

U.S. House Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and other New York politicians just chased off 25,000 Amazon jobs that could have created salaries of at least $115,000 jobs each. Unfazed and stunningly arrogant, these politicians are taking a victory lap following their dubious success.
AOC’s Cringeworthy Response To Amazon Decision
youtube
CCN reported earlier today that Amazon had scrapped the spacious campus it had planned to build in Long Island City, Queens, which would have created roughly 25,000 well-paying jobs. The residual job creation was estimated to be an additional 67,000 jobs.
The cheers that followed Amazon’s decision to pull out of New York are misguided and troublesome. Too many politicians seem tone-deaf to traditional ideals, like job creation, in their relentless effort to denigrate anything related to big money.
Following Amazon’s announcement, some of the loudest cheers came from Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The freshman member of the U.S. House of Representatives had previously described the e-commerce giant’s HQ2 plans as “creeping overreach.”
Thursday, she proclaimed victory and showed once again she doesn’t see the destruction her misguided ideas can cause.
She tweeted:
Anything is possible: today was the day a group of dedicated, everyday New Yorkers & their neighbors defeated Amazon’s corporate greed, its worker exploitation, and the power of the richest man in the world. https://t.co/nyvm5vtH9k
— Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (@AOC) February 14, 2019
If that wasn’t enough, she followed up with comments that indicate it’s about her, not her constituents.
A reporter caught up with Ocasio-Cortez Tuesday, and she seemed oblivious to the fact that her district is out thousands of jobs and billions of dollars. Even more aggravating is her suggestion that she possesses a concrete, viable plan that would be better than Amazon’s firm plans.
She stammered to the reporter:
“We were subsidizing those jobs so for… the city was paying for those jobs. So frankly, if we were willing to give Amazon three…if we were willing to give away $3 billion for this deal, we could invest those $3 billion in our district ourselves if we wanted to.”
Amazon Stops Just Short of Calling Out Ocasio-Cortez by Name
Amazon will no longer build a 25,000-employee corporate campus in Queens. | Source: Shutterstock
In explaining why it couldn’t move forward with building in New York, Amazon strikingly said it was due to the politicians.
In its statement about the cancellation, Amazon said:
“While polls show that 70% of New Yorkers support our plans and investment, a number of state and local politicians have made it clear that they oppose our presence and will not work with us to build the type of relationships that are required to go forward with the project we and many others envisioned in Long Island City.”
On the opposite end of the spectrum, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio attacked Amazon for abandoning its HQ2 plans.
He said:
“You have to be tough to make it in New York. We gave Amazon the opportunity to be a good neighbor and do business in the greatest city in the world. Instead of working with the community, Amazon threw away that opportunity.”
Maybe Ocasio-Cortez Should Retake Basic Math
Once again, Ocasio-Cortez falls a little short in basic math here. Even CNBC’s Andrew Ross Sorkin took her to task. He pointed out that this would have been a subsidy only if the state got nothing back for giving it.
Sorkin expressed his disagreement in terms of the huge missed opportunity.
“It’s one thing to win the war on Twitter, it’s another when it happens in real life, and it happens to real people with real jobs and real families. I don’t get that upset about a lot of things. “[This] wins a great Twitter war. It looks great on Twitter, but in real life, it’s a very different story.”
New York to Miss out on $27 Billion from Amazon HQ2
youtube
The politicians seem to be missing some good old-fashioned economics logic. Sorkin broke it down like this. The $3 billion in subsidies will provide a massive return on investment in the form of economic spending and growth.
“[The state] would have effectively been paying out $3 billion in incentives for what would have likely been the equivalent of $27 billion over 25 years. You can play with the math, and you can tell me that there were going to be additional costs, and there likely would have been, but if I handed you $3 billion and you gave me $25 billion back, or you gave me $15 billion back, or $10 billion back, that could have been used for roads, schools, police, and subways, I think that’s a good deal.”
That slight from the De Blasio was even more unsettling because the mayor had ostensibly negotiated the deal in good faith.
“Then it seems he hit them on the way out the door today.”
These reactions are silly, childish and not productive. Beyond the loss of Amazon and its associated $27 billion in economic growth, they signal to other major companies that perhaps states like progressive-leaning New York aren’t as friendly to businesses as officials seem to hoodwink people into believing.
Lots Of Cheering Now Turning Into Lots of Crying For Others
As the politicians bask in the glory of running off a major corporation that could have provided jobs for their constituents, they seem to be ignoring others who will be negatively affected.
A lot of moves had started to be made after Amazon announced plans that it would build in Long Island City. For example, over the course of the 14 weeks since the announcement, contracts to buy homes, mostly condos, jumped a mind-boggling 181% compared to the same period a year ago, according to CNBC. Now you have to wonder if those people who signed those contracts will try to pull out.
Other Finalists Put Up ‘We Still Want You’ Signs
Long Island City won out over 19 other cities that Amazon chose as finalists that wanted the company to build their headquarters in their locales.
Arlington, Virginia’s local government reassured residents that Amazon still planned to proceed with its new HQ2 campus in Crystal City.
They tweeted:
Statement from Arlington County Board Chair Christian Dorsey on Amazon: "After speaking with an Amazon representative earlier today, we have confirmed that we are moving forward as planned with Amazon’s upcoming headquarters in Arlington – nothing has changed." (1/3)
— ArlingtonVA (@ArlingtonVA) February 14, 2019
Summing up the fallout for New York City, Council Minority Whip Joe Borelli said it nearly perfectly, in an interview with Fox Business:
“Amazon was facing local politicians who weren’t going to negotiate in good faith for the real challenges that would befall anybody developing a large area of the city.”

‘Trump Baby’ balloon sparks online row

Plans to fly a giant inflatable depicting Donald Trump as a baby over London during the US president's visit have sparked an online row.
London Mayor Sadiq Khan has given permission for the helium-filled six-metre (19.7ft) high balloon to fly.
Some people on social media have welcomed the blimp protest, while others have described it as "juvenile" and "disrespectful".
Mr Trump is due to meet Theresa May at 10 Downing Street on 13 July.
Campaigners raised almost £18,000 to pay for the inflatable, which they said reflects Mr Trump's character as an "angry baby with a fragile ego and tiny hands".
Republicans Overseas spokesman Drew Liquerman said the blimp was "cringeworthy", but he doesn't believe the US president will care about it.
"Frankly it's embarrassing. It's embarrassing for the people flying it, for the British residents of London and for people in the UK," he added.
"I don't think it will bother him."
Social media has been split between those who view the blimp as a suitable protest against the president...

Under the plans the inflatable will be allowed to fly for two hours on the morning of Friday 13 July, using Parliament Square Garden as a grounding point.
A statement on behalf of Mr Khan said he "supports the right to peaceful protest and understands that this can take many different forms".
More than 10,000 people signed a petition calling for the inflatable to be given permission to fly, activists said.

Mayor 'bans' Donald Trump from Sheffield
Leo Murray, who is behind the crowdfunded idea, said: "[Mr Trump] really seems to hate it when people make fun of him.
"We want to make sure he knows that all of Britain is looking down on him and laughing at him."

Mr Khan and Mr Trump have repeatedly clashed on Twitter, including in the aftermath of the London Bridge attack.
A counter-protest which aims to fund a "Sadiq Khan baby balloon" has received more than £10,000 of support.
Before the inflatable can take off, campaigners also need permission from the National Air Traffic Service and Met Police.
Max Wakefield, who is one of the people working on the project, said the group is "confident it will obtain all necessary permits".
Mr Trump has so far made no comment.

Here's our list of the Top 10 McDonald's Fails! Though McDonald's is one of our favorite fast food restaurants, they've had some failures over the years. Here's a few McDonald's menu items that failed. ➡️ Subscribe to BabbleTop: https://bit.ly/2Uu3HPe Founded in 1940 as a hamburger stand, McDonald’s became a shining example of America’s fast food industry as it invaded malls and cities. Today, McDonald’s can now be found in 120 countries. Despite this success, it has not stopped them from being the bottom of all jokes on Wendy’s Twitter account (like a petty little sister, she’s relentless). As not everything always goes as planned let’s discuss the top 10 McDonald’s fails. McDonald's is the leading global food service retailer with over 36,000 restaurants in more than 100 countries around the world. If you enjoyed this facts list of the top 10 McDonald's restaurant fails, then comment: #McDonalds #FastFood #Fails TIMESTAMPS: 0:32 McSoup 1:16 McDonald’s In Vietnam 2:50 McD’s Big N’Tasty 4:24 McDonald’s Hula Burger 5:12 McDonald’s Radio Silence 6:44 McLobster 8:24 McD’s Constant Media Flak 9:52 Foreign Objects (McDonald’s Real Secret Menu) 11:10 McAfrika 12:32 McDonald’s Viral Disasters SUMMARIES: - McSoup is not only the least appealing McDonald’s item in a long, long time, it’s also just Campbell’s Soup poured into a red cup with Golden Arches to justify the prefix. - McDonald’s can’t fit a country between two buns as hard as it might try, but its debacle in Vietnam definitely qualifies to be a part of this list. - Big N' Tasty. With a 1/4 pound* 100% beef patty, juicy tomato, premium leaf lettuce, pickles, slivered onions, ketchup and mayonnaise dressing on a toasted sesame seed bun, we could have called it The Ginormous Burger. (But we didn't.) - The Hula Burger was a meatless burger introduced in the 1960's by Ray Kroc to McDonald's. It was a substitute for American Catholics that would not eat meat on Fridays. The burger was a slice of grilled pineapple with cheese on a bun. But this was designed to go up against the Filet-O-Fish, which was created by a Catholic McDonald's Franchisee Louis M. "Lou" Groen. McDonald's killed the Hula Burger early on, as it became quickly evident that its alternative, the Filet-O-Fish, was getting much better traction. - McDonald’s radio silence in response to these digs is rather boring. - McLobster was an American seasonal sandwich at McDonald's. Now it is only available in Atlantic Canada and New England region in the summer, when lobster is abundant. It is a lobster roll served in a hot dog bun with “lobster sauce” and shredded lettuce and was introduced in 1993. The product had supply issues and was not very profitable nationally. - Media outlets are constantly attacking McDonald's restaurants for its unhealthy food, poorly treated employees, and failed menu items, and other restaurants have no qualms about trolling the organization. - Food scandals are a regular Tuesday for McDonald’s, but foreign objects are a rarer entity in this list of debacles. - McAfrika was either a tongue-in-cheek naming gag or just cringeworthy innocence. - McDonald’s dispelled the viral image by releasing a video that details how McNuggets are actually made, the damage had been done, and McDonald’s finally had to admit that it stopped using mechanically separated meat only in 2011. 4 lessons from EPA's criticized crisis response
The Environmental Protection Agency is fighting back-but many called it the wrong move.
After The Associated Press reportquestioned why EPA workers had yet to access damaged toxic sites in Houston, the agency attacked the reporter, claiming AP was guilty of yellow journalism.
In the Sept. 3 report, AP reported that 13 Superfund sites-designated by the EPA as some of America's most toxic places-were under water in Houston flooding. The article claimed that reporters had been able to access the sites by boat and on foot, even though the EPA was still offsite.
AP's Jason Dearen and Michael Biesecker wrote:
AP journalists used a boat to document the condition of one flooded Houston-area Superfund site, but accessed others with a vehicle or on foot. The EPA did not respond to questions about why its personnel had not yet been able to do so.
Teams are in place to investigate possible damage to these sites as soon flood waters recede, and personnel are able to safely access the sites, the EPA statement said.
Initially, the EPA tweeted that Superfund sites would be accessed one they became accessible:
We are inspecting flooded Superfund sites as quickly as our personnel can access them as the floodwaters recede.
- U.S. EPA (@EPA) September 2, 2017
After AP's report, the EPA released a separate release, stating that all 41 Superfund sites had been assessed through aerial imaging. Its statement didn't stop there, however:
The agency wrote:
Yesterday, the Associated Press' Michael Biesecker wrote an incredibly misleading story about toxic land sites that are under water.
Despite reporting from the comfort of Washington, Biesecker had the audacity to imply that agencies aren't being responsive to the devastating effects of Hurricane Harvey. Not only is this inaccurate, but it creates panic and politicizes the hard work of first responders who are actually in the affected area.
The personal attack on Biesecker confounded some, while others compared the criticism to the modus operandi of President Donald Trump's administration.
This EPA statement pushing back on the AP's reporting is unreal https://t.co/oZ98Zjp0My
- Jon Passantino (@passantino) September 3, 2017
The agency's aggressive move backfired, and the story continued to gain traction as journalists rallied to defend one of their own.
Here are four alternative tactics the EPA could have tried-and lessons PR pros should use for future crises:
1. Focus on the facts, not the writer.
By attacking the Biasecki's credibility, the EPA surrendered its own position as an impartial government agency. Its statement singled out the reporter by name, which some watchers found both cringeworthy and newsworthy:
Stunning EPA response to the AP's reporting. Attacks the reporter personally. Calls the report 'yellow journalism'. https://t.co/69aKXBcFYP pic.twitter.com/yg9Yf9ufCQ
- Kyle Griffin (@kylegriffin1) September 3, 2017
The ad hominem style might excite some readers, but it keeps the story in the news. Remember, the more you react in an emotional or controversial manner, the more fodder you give members of the news media-along with social media users.
2. Offer an alternative version of events.
Media outlets were quick to notice that though the EPA lambasted AP's report, it seemed to confirm the basic facts of the story.
Politico wrote:
The statement did not point to any specific factual inaccuracies in Saturday's story, besides accusing Biesecker of leaving out information about the EPA's other efforts to monitor the toxic land sites, and the AP has not offered any corrections on the piece.
Twitter users agreed:
EPA release does not contest a single fact in AP's reporting, personally attacks AP reporter, cites Breitbart https://t.co/y97KMw9Mzq pic.twitter.com/bKmRHlGWYC
- Judd Legum (@JuddLegum) September 3, 2017
EPA's response did include its claim that it surveyed all Superfund sites with aerial imaging, but took no effort to explain why its approach was preferable to having boots on the ground. Don't let the opportunity to control your organization's narrative pass by. Instead, act quickly to control the situation (including your side of the story).
3. Stay accountable by avoiding unsigned statements.
Some called the EPA's response insulting because it lacked proper attribution.
My favorite part about this is the flack apparently was too scared to actually attach his name to the statement sliming a reporter. https://t.co/MVUjZQMnij
- Matthew Nussbaum (@MatthewNussbaum) September 3, 2017
Most of the release was unsigned, but a quote at the end is attributedto EPA's associate administrator, Liz Bowman:
Once again, in an attempt to mislead Americans, the Associated Press is cherry-picking facts, as EPA is monitoring Superfund sites around Houston and we have a team of experts on the ground working with our state and local counterparts responding to Hurricane Harvey. Anything to the contrary is yellow journalism.
[FREE DOWNLOAD: Discover how health care organizations can move forward in an evolving PR world.]
PR pros, take note: A lack of attribution might suggest that no one at your organization believes in the statement enough to publicly stand by it.
4. Calm fears with expert interviews.
The EPA has scientists and specialists who could speak about what they are doing in response to the accident. Instead, news outlets were left to find experts.
Buzzfeed reported:
No Superfund site has ever seen this kind of flooding before, so experts don't know what kind of damage to expect.
"We don't have any precedent to figuring out what the cumulative effect is going to be on someone's health," [Jennifer Horney, an associate professor of epidemiology at Texas A&M University] said. "They're not going to get cancer tomorrow - they may get asthma in three months."
When trying to put out a PR fire, give journalists as much information as possible that can show your side of the story while providing additional facts and views for their articles. This way, you can potentially change the narrative.
Communicators, what tactics would you have suggested to stop EPA's bad news cycle?

Reebok wants in on the Trump Twitter trolling game and it’s showing absolutely no mercy.
On Friday, the athletic apparel company took a shot at the U.S. President by crafting a graphic that mocked the “compliments” he delivered to French President Emmanuel Macrons wife last week.
In a moment captured on Facebook Live during Trump’s visit to Paris, he can be seen giving French first lady Brigitte, a once-over before saying, “You know, you’re in such great shape … beautiful.”

In response to the cringeworthy interaction, Reebok posted an elaborate subtweet in the form of a handy chart created to help people determine when it’s appropriate to utter the words Trump spoke to Macron’s wife.
According to Reebok, really the only scenario Trump’s words could ever be considered okay is if you’re saying them while admiring a decades-old action figure from your childhood that survived a long hibernation in your parents’ basement.
Otherwise, maybe just try to keep them to yourself.

Reebok’s elaborate subtweet at Donald Trump has Twitter users talking
Image: twitter/reebok

The Oscars fail is not a good look for the accounting firm responsible as tax season approaches
'Bojack Horseman's depiction of the accounting firm as guardians of an ancient tradition reflects how the company's PR team has always treated its role in the Oscars. That's over now.
Image: netflix still
They had one job.
PricewaterhouseCoopers, the vaunted accounting firm that has lorded over Oscars secrets for decades, usually relies on the Academy Awards for some easy, free publicity as tax season approaches.
The company’s public relations department likes to play up an aura of Hollywood lore around its 83-year run as caretaker of the winners list, treating the act of looking after a handful of envelopes as a sort of mysterious ceremonial tradition that can only be entrusted to the world’s most elite accountants.
That image came crashing down within the span of a few minutes on Sunday night. And all it took was a single, misplaced envelope.
As the shock and pandemonium of seeing the night’s biggest moment blow up in such a spectacular fashion began to wear off, people looked around for someone to blame. It didn’t take long for eyes to shift from a hapless Warren Beatty to the accountants running the show behind the scenes.

The firm’s Twitter mentions were soon swamped with reactions from critics, some mocking, some angry, and some simply bemused at how the firm could flub such a seemingly simple task.
@PwC_LLP this is not even an attention to detail mistake this is just being careless. It was embarrassing for everyone on that stage

@PwC @briancullinan_ @MarthaLTRuiz You guys f@cked up big time. #PWC you’ve lost your integrity. Martha/Brian, which one of you was it?

@PwC @briancullinan_ @MarthaLTRuiz Ha! And you guys are really PARTNERS in a so called Big 4 AUDITING firm?? How laughable; unforgivable!
Kyle Dillman (@kylekdill) February 27, 2017
@PwC How can organisations that handle billions of dollars trust you again after you can’t give a correct envelope to someone? Mailroom 101

PwC issued an apologetic statement hours later in which it owned up to its fault in the mess.

PwC LLP (@PwC_LLP) February 27, 2017
“At the end of the day we made a human error,” Tim Ryan, U.S. chairman and senior partner of PwCtold USA Today in a follow-up interview Monday.
“We made a mistake. What happened was, our partner on the left side of the stage, Brian Cullinan, he handed the wrong envelope to Warren Beatty. And then the second we realized that we notified the appropriate parties and corrected the mistake.”
Fun fact: Only 2 PwC partners know the identity of #Oscars winners before envelopes are opened live! Follow @briancullinan_ & @MarthaLTRuiz http://pic.twitter.com/i06ZuAKgiZ
PwC (@PwC) February 24, 2017
By Monday morning, PwC was having perhaps its biggest turn in the public spotlight evera moment that likely surpassed much more consequential controversies like its role in the financial crisis and a string of rule-breaking settlements in the early 2000s in terms of media attention. Usually subject only to some annual passing intrigue over its secret-keeping customs, the firm now took center stage before an audience of millions.
It’s often said that there’s no such thing as bad press, but when it comes to a firm that individual and institutional clients expect to meticulously catalog their finances, botching a simple envelope hand-off might qualify, here.
PwC is one of the biggest and best accounting firms in the world. It’s one of only a handful of big companies widely recognized as a longtime, undisputed leader of their industry. The Oscars debacle, as cringeworthy as it was, doesn’t really change that.
Yet as taxpayers look for a name they can trust to adeptly handle their IRS bills this April, an association with such a high-profile meltdown doesn’t look good, even if it does get the firm’s name in the minds of millions of people who might otherwise never have thought twice about it.
In any case, it’s doubtful that the accounting firm will ever again be able to credibly bill itself as the esteemed keeper of some sacred Hollywood custom. While previous years’ shows have seen a few similar accidents, there has never been one of such epic proportion, and no one’s likely to forget should the firm make its usual pre-Oscars press round in years to come.
A scene from ‘Bojack Horseman’ plays on the aura of mystery PwC has built around its Oscars job.
Image: netflix still
In fact, there’s even some speculation that the firm’s long-running partnership with The Academy might be in jeopardy too. Speaking to the New York Times on Monday, brand image expert Andrew Gilman, CEO of crisis communications firm CommCore Consulting Group, told the paper that the firm’s reputation will likely take a major dent:
Im sure there will be a logical explanation for what happened, but theyre going to be the butt of jokes for late-night TV for at least a week, there will be memes written, and I think itll be interesting to see if they hold on to their contract.
As far as damage control goes, there’s little the firm can do to erase the incident from public memory beyond apologizing. As of Monday morning, the brand’s Twitter account was already resolutely plowing forward with unrelated company news to bury the now-embarrassing Oscar promotions.
Much of the promotional push PwC did in the lead-up to the event already looks awfully silly in retrospect. For instance, a particularly prescient piece last week from the Huffington Postwhich partnered with the accounting firm for the showis entitled, “What Would Happen If A Presenter Announced The Wrong Winner At The Oscars?” (Naturally, that post has already fueled a few #OscarsTruthers.)
Perhaps the best outcome PwC can hope for brand-wise is a surge of pitying goodwill from people who think the haters are being too hard on it.
@PwC_LLP We’ve become a country of people who feel human error is unacceptable. This is not a big deal, no one died…except for a few egos.
Carla (@TrueJustice0157) February 27, 2017
@amancaytapia @PwC_LLP Jesus, they’ve just apologised, what else do you want them to do? Perhaps a public firing of the envelope mishandler?
Al Pollock (@alpwriting) February 27, 2017
@abafos @PwC_LLP ahh get over it!
adam (@adamgrimsley) February 27, 2017
That, or America forgetting the incident once our president inevitably plunges the news cycle back into its usual chaos. PricewaterhouseCoopers who?

15 internet moments in 2018 that made us scream 'NOPE'

*unintelligible screaming*
We're only halfway through 2018, but it already appears to be the year of loudly yelling at the internet every 20 minutes or so.
From insensitive YouTube videos and mortifying viral challenges, to disturbing makeup trends and abhorrent tweets, the online world has truly tested our patience these past six months.
SEE ALSO: Elizabeth Warren got a new puppy because everything else is bad
Here are 15 of the biggest NOPE moments the internet had to offer this year. They'll be tough to re-live for sure, but let them inspire us all to be better online contributors in the future.
1. Terrible, horrible, no good, very bad Logan Paul saga
YouTuber Logan Paul kicked off 2018 in one of the worst ways imaginable. On New Year's Eve, Paul shared a video with his 15 million subscribers that contained footage of an apparent victim of suicide he found in Japan's Aokigahara forest.
After the video received a serious amount of backlash, Paul apologized, claiming he "intended to raise awareness for suicide and suicide prevention," but in the weeks that followed the situation only grew worse.
Dear Internet, pic.twitter.com/42OCDBhiWg
— Logan Paul (@LoganPaul) January 2, 2018
A supercut of Paul's trip to Japan, which showed him severely disrespecting Japanese culture, went viral. He was dragged for an insensitive comment he left on Cardi B's Instagram, and admitted he wasn't making content with his younger fan base in mind.
In wake of the vlog backlash, Paul did make an effort to advocate for suicide prevention by pledging to donate a total of $1 million to various suicide prevention organizations, but that didn't erase all the pain and disgust his careless video caused viewers.
2. The painfully embarrassing Tide Pod Challenge
The year has already birthed a number of viral challenges, but none have proven to be as foolish and potentially deadly as the Tide Pod Challenge.
After teens started recording and sharing videos of themselves frying and "eating" poisonous soap-filled pouches known as Tide Pods, YouTube had to step in and take action. Tide Pods videos were pulled from the site, but the damage was done.
Tide Pod inspired pizza, doughnuts, sushi, and shots were created, and things wound up getting so out of hand that stores had to LOCK UP THE DELICIOUS LOOKING DETERGENT. UGH! Humans sometimes, honestly!
y’all really joked around so much that tide put their tide pods in plastic boxes...smh pic.twitter.com/Z44efALcX5
— ㅤnavid (@NavidHasan_) January 13, 2018
3. Meals cooked in a MOUTH
The first half of 2018 was also when we learned about this chef who cooks meals using only her freaking mouth. She preps turkey stuffing, steak tartare, pancakes, and even a smoothie using her teeth and saliva, then uploads the videos to YouTube. We don't care if it's "performance art," it's A LOT to comprehend, so can we get a NOPE over here?
youtube
4. When someone tried to make teeth nails a thing
Some bizarre beauty trends have popped up in 2018, but teeth nails took things way too far.
Instagram user @nail_sunny cursed feeds everywhere by sharing a video of regular old nails being transformed to resemble human teeth. The cringeworthy footage was set to Drake's "God's Plan," and IDK about you but I prefer the original music video a whole lot more.
A post shared by Nail Sunny Loves FIFA 2018 (@nail_sunny) on May 8, 2018 at 9:07am PDT
5. Kanye West's tumultuous Twitter return
In 2018, Kanye West decided it was time to tweet again and fans had NO idea what they were in for.
Since April 13, 2018, when Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey welcomed the rapper back to the platform, Kanye has taken his 28 million followers on a dramatic roller coaster filled with tattoo designs, fashion photo shoots, the deepest of musings, album release dates, controversial comments on slavery, and a whole lot of love for Donald Trump.
pic.twitter.com/YyUw0mCKov
— KANYE WEST (@kanyewest) April 25, 2018
Watching Kanye's feed over the past few months has truly been exhausting, even for his IRL friends.
6. Pelican takeover
A real-life horror film was shot at the 2018 Pepperdine University graduation when very large pelicans swarmed the ceremony and wreaked havoc on attendees.
Things got so intense that security had to step in, and, after all their intruding, the birds didn't even get diplomas.
youtube
7. Elon Musk hating on journalists
Grimes' boyfriend gave President Trump a rest and decided to share his own thoughts about the media via Twitter. Musk announced he plans to create "a media credibility rating site" that will allow the public to review the truth of individual articles, journalists, editors, and publications.
Going to create a site where the public can rate the core truth of any article & track the credibility score over time of each journalist, editor & publication. Thinking of calling it Pravda …
— Elon Musk (@elonmusk) May 23, 2018
Despite the fact that his girlfriend's mom is a journalist, Musk carried on with his anti-media rant, explaining his belief that the journalist's lack of credibility is the reason Trump was elected in the first place. 🙃
8. The Nukebook
Japanese graphic designer Shusaku Takaoka shared a horrifying recreation of the iconic image from The Notebook that will probably ruin your life.
Normally, the photo from the romantic film, based off a Nicholas Sparks novel, shows stars Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams embracing in the rain. But Takaoka replaced the actors with Donald Trump and Kim Jong-un to give the internet the following painful sight.
A post shared by shusaku takaoka (@shusaku1977) on Jun 12, 2018 at 6:50pm PDT
2018, please be nicer to us!
9. BBC imagining the "perfect body"
In a terrifying video shared by BBC, anatomist Alice Roberts examined an advanced model of the perfect human body. It had enlarged eyes and ears, a chimp's lower back, emu legs, a breast-less chest, the heart of a dog, and lungs of a swan. And oh yeah, did we forget to mention A BABY POPPING OUT OF A MARSUPIAL POUCH? NOPE!
youtube
10. The IHOb hype
The International House of Pancakes (aka IHOP) really tested everyone's patience in 2018. The chain restaurant, best known for its breakfast food, decided to unleash a long, drawn out, and very secretive marketing campaign in which it would re-brand from IHOP to IHOb.
Mashable figured out the "b" stood for burgers before the big announcement, but IHOP made everyone wait an entire week before officially revealing the burger news. So extra.
For 60 pancakin’ years, we’ve been IHOP. Now, we’re flippin’ our name to IHOb. Find out what it could b on 6.11.18. #IHOb pic.twitter.com/evSxKV3QmT
— IHOb (@IHOb) June 4, 2018
11. Millie Bobby Brown leaving Twitter
Twitter hit an especially low point when Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown left the platform in June after becoming the subject of a hateful meme.
It all started when the hashtag #TakeDownMillieBobbyBrown — which was started in 2017 by the now suspended Twitter user @KelsFiona — resurfaced online. In response, people began sharing false stories, negative memes, and fake Snapchat photos claiming that Millie is homophobic.
i think it’s time i share my #TakeDownMillieBobbyBrown story... i was at my local starbucks, and milky boobie brown comes in so i asked her for a picture. then she PEES in my drink! then she called me a “fat chicken dyke” and put a straw in my nose! i’ve never been so ashamed.
— Laurane :) (@Laurie________) June 5, 2018
After the 14-year-old anti-bullying advocate — yes, she has an entire side Twitter account dedicated to spreading love and kindness — endured a substantial amount of trolling she deactivated her account. How are those anti-harassment plans coming, @Jack?
12. BBQ Becky, Permit Patty, and Pool Patrol Paula
Meme's don't always stem from lighthearted events, and 2018 has proved that with BBQ Becky, Permit Patty, and Pool Patrol Paula.
In May, an Oakland woman named Jennifer Schulte called the police on two black men who she believed were grilling in a park without a permit. After a video, which captured the woman's interaction with the men and phone call to the police went viral, Twitter users slammed her for racial profiling and she came to be known by meme-makers as "BBQ Becky."
youtube
A month later, Alison Ettel called the police on an 8-year-old girl for selling water on a sidewalk. Ettel was also transformed into a meme, dubbed "Permit Patty," and her harsh actions against a child of color were condemned by many.
We gotta new meme tho y'all #PermitPatty pic.twitter.com/DW3TFjRzn4
— Racist Raj 🌹 (@_ethiopiangold) June 23, 2018
Less than a week later, a third white woman — 38-year-old Stephanie Sebby-Strempel (now known to the internet as "Pool Patrol Paula") — was charged with assaulting a 15-year-old black boy at a public pool after reportedly yelling racial slurs. A video showing part of the confrontation was posted to Facebook, and the #PoolPatrolPaula hashtag was started to raise awareness of her unacceptable behavior.
In light of this utterly disappointing trend, Mashable created a list of 5 things white people can do before calling the cops on a black person. Please read it.
13. Roseanne's racist remarks
In June, actress and comedian Roseanne Barr tweeted a racist remark about President Obama's former black female advisor, Valerie Jarrett.
Barr's tweet received a serious amount of backlash. In response, the actress deleted the tweet, claimed she was just joking, and then tried to blame Ambien for her actions. Ultimately, the tweet led to her show being cancelled, her agent dropping her, and a her taking a short leave of absence from the social media platform.
14. Marco Rubio complaining about the fucking "F-word"
After a shooting at the Capital Gazette left five dead, staff writer Selene San Felice appeared on CNN where she said the following: "I'm going to need more than a couple days of news coverage and some thoughts and prayers, because it's our whole lives have been shattered. And so thanks for your prayers, but I couldn't give a fuck about them if there's nothing else."
Instead of tweeting support for the press, Marco Rubio decided to rage tweet about people using the f-word a little too freely.
Sign of our times... the F word is now routinely used in news stories, tweets etc It’s not even F*** anymore. Who made that decision???
— Marco Rubio (@marcorubio) June 29, 2018
"Sign of our times... the F word is now routinely used in news stories, tweets etc It’s not even F*** anymore. Who made that decision???" Rubio tweeted on June 29.
Always nice to see a man who has his fucking priorities straight. Isn't it?
15. A whole lot of Donald Trump
In the first half of 2018 Donald Trump has had a LOT of not so great moments online.
Early in the year "girther" memes examining Trump's physique spread after the White House announced he's 6 feet, three inches tall, and weighs 239 pounds. There was that time he tried to convince everyone he's a "genius," tweeted incorrect facts, attempted to host the failed Fake News Awards, insulted many — including but certainly not limited to Jay-Z, Alec Baldwin, and Maxine Waters.
Crazy Maxine Waters, said by some to be one of the most corrupt people in politics, is rapidly becoming, together with Nancy Pelosi, the FACE of the Democrat Party. Her ranting and raving, even referring to herself as a wounded animal, will make people flee the Democrats!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) July 3, 2018
Not to mention the mess of typos and deleted tweets the president's Twitter followers have had to endure.
So yeah, as you can see the internet is occasionally a digital portal to hell. But the online world hasn't been all bad this year. Check out 16 of the best internet moments in 2018 to restore your faith in humanity.
