Some ‘The Namesake’ (Jhumpa Lahiri) Cheat Notes

Characters:

Gogol (Nikhil) Ganguli -  The novel’s primary protagonist. Gogol is an obedient, inquisitive, and sensitive child, close to his parents and sister. The novel tracks Gogol’s growth from child into young man. This growth includes changing his name, to Nikhil, and the gradual discovery of architecture as a career. Gogol navigates, over time, his relationship to his parents’ identity, as Bengalis in America. He also tries to forge his own identity, as a Bengali-American child born in the US. At the close of the novel, Gogol begins reading Nikolai Gogol, his namesake, as a way of getting closer to his deceased father, who adored the writer.

Ashima Ganguli -  Another of the novel’s protagonists. Ashima, at the beginning of the novel, does not make choices so much as she accepts the choices of others. Her parents arrange her marriage to Ashoke, and out of duty she follows him to cold, desolate-seeming Boston. She grows to love her husband, and, later, her son Gogol and daughter Sonia. But for years, Ashima misses her family in Calcutta and yearns desperately for her old life there. Only after many years, and following her husband’s death while away in Ohio, does Ashima realize that the Boston area is her home, and that she is surrounded by friends and a surrogate family there.

Ashoke Ganguli -  The third of the novel’s protagonists. Ashoke is a quiet, sensitive man, and although the narrator does not have access to many of his thoughts, he is nevertheless devoted to his wife and children. Ashoke is also deeply affected by the train accident that nearly killed him in his youth. He gives his son the name Gogol as an acknowledgment of what that writer means to him. Nikolai Gogol and the other Russian writers are also emblems of “foreignness,” of a life lived in exile. This is the life Ashoke has chosen for himself, as a PhD student and then professor in the US, far from his family in Calcutta. Ashoke chose to set out for himself, in a place of his choosing, after the train accident solidified his resolve to see the world.

Sonia Ganguli -  The fourth member of the Ganguli family in Boston. Although the reader very rarely has access to Sonia’s thoughts, she is a constant, calming presence for the family. She goes to school and lives for a time in California, but after Ashoke’s death, Sonia returns to the Boston area, where she practices law and becomes engaged to a man named Ben. Sonia is a steadying presence for Ashima after Ashoke’s passing.

Moushumi -  Gogol’s wife. Moushumi knew Gogol when he was a young boy, and the two are set up on a blind date, in New York, by their parents. Moushumi is a graduate student in French literature and adores Paris. She also adores, in part, the cosmopolitan life she lived there, with a banker named Graham, who left her and broke her heart. Moushumi marries Gogol but, after a time, becomes restless in the marriage, and enjoys more and more the company of her intellectual friends. Moushumi begins an affair with Dimitri, an old acquaintance, and later she and Gogol divorce. Moushumi’s point of view is included, though not frequently, in the novel. We learn, for example, of the dissolution of Moushumi’s first engagement, to the American banker, via access to her own thoughts, although the narrator retains the third person in these sections.

Maxine Ratliff -  Gogol’s second serious girlfriend. Maxine and Gogol meet in New York, at a party. Maxine represents, for Gogol, a life very different from his own. She lives with her parents downtown, in a beautiful townhouse, and shares their intellectual, cosmopolitan life. Maxine does not always understand Gogol’s family’s traditions, but she tries to, and seems to care genuinely for him. After Ashoke’s death, Gogol pulls away from Maxine, leaving her out of the mourning ceremonies. They soon separate.

Ruth -  Nikhil’s first serious girlfriend. Gogol and Ruth meet on the train, from New Haven to Boston, heading back to their respective homes for a Thanksgiving break in college. They both attend Yale. They fall in love and spend about a year together, but Ruth then goes away to Oxford to study for a semester. After this, their relationship becomes strained, and they part.

Dimitri Desjardins -  an aimless academic, and Moushumi’s illicit lover. Dimitri met Moushumi when she was in high school and he was applying to PhD programs. Moushumi finds Dimitri’s information by change, and they begin an affair. Moushumi knows that her tryst with Dimitri is wrong, and that he is something of a slob and a dilettante. But this does not keep her from the affair.

Gerald And Lydia Ratliff -  Maxine’s parents. Wealthy and intellectually inclined, Gerald and Lydia open their home to Nikhil, whom they seem to admire. They are comfortable in their world of New York society, and though they are kind to Gogol, he never quite feels a part of their circle.

Donald And Astrid -  Moushumi’s intellectual friends in Brooklyn. Donald and Astrid are, in Nikhil’s mind, the kind of people who find their own choices to be the only correct ones. Although Donald and Astrid seem open and liberal, they are in fact quite set in their ways. Nikhil is frustrated by what he views as their selfishness.

Graham -  Moushumi’s ex-fiancé. A banker in Paris, Graham, an American, moves back to America with Moushumi, and they plan a life together. But Moushumi realizes that Graham has reservations about the traditions that come with marrying a Bengali-American, and they break up.

Ghosh -  a businessman Ashoke meets on his ill-fated train ride. Ghost tells Ashoke that living abroad is important for any young man. Ghosh himself lived in England until his wife made him return to India. Ghosh tells Ashoke to visit him at his home during the train ride, but Ashoke never has the chance, as Ghosh is killed in the wreck.

Ashima’s Father -  an illustrator in Calcutta. Ashima’s father dies in Chapter 2, as the family is preparing to return to India to visit. His death is very difficult for Ashima, who feels distant from her family.

Ashima’s Grandmother -  given the ceremonial job of naming Gogol. Ashima’s grandmother suffers a stroke early in the novel, in Calcutta, and though she mails a letter with Gogol’s “official” name in it, the letter never arrives. She dies soon after.

The Nandis And Dr. Gupta -  Bengali friends of Ashoke’s and Ashima’s in Cambridge. These three visit the Gangulis in the hospital in Cambridge, after Gogol is born.

Alan And Judy -  Ashoke and Ashima’s neighbors in Cambridge. Alan and Judy are free-spirits and liberals, and though Ashoke and Ashima find them nice and compassionate to live near, they are also confused by the informality of Alan and Judy’s lives, and by the cavalier way in which Alan and Judy raise and keep track of their children.

Symbols:

Trains - Trains appear again and again in Lahiri’s novel, and twice a train accident plays a significant role in the story. The first is the devastating accident in Ashoke’s past, which he barely survives, and the second is when an unknown person commits suicide on the tracks of a train that is carrying Gogol home from Yale. The presence of trains in the novel seems to be a reminder of the constant and inevitable forward motion of life, which advances and accumulates outside of anyone’s control, as Gogol reflects at the end of the novel. It is on a train that Gogol meets Ruth, and on a train that he discovers Moushumi’s affair. Trains also represent motion, travel, and distance, and are a reminder that the novel’s main characters are divided between homes, constantly unsettled.

Graves - In a few moments in the novel, Gogol thinks with longing of the idea of a grave—a place that will bear his legacy into the future, and give him or his family a permanent physical anchor in space. In reality, he knows they will never have such a grave, since in the Hindu tradition their bodies will be cremated. Gogol is first struck by this desire on a fieldtrip to a graveyard of early American settlers, whose odd names give him a sense of kinship with these early immigrants. The feeling reoccurs when he sees the Ratliff’s family graveyard and pictures Maxine returning to this place to bury her parents.

Tone:

Sympathetic 

"And yet the familiarity that had once drawn her to him has begun to keep her at bay. Though she knows it's not his fault, she can't help but associate him, at times, with a sense of resignation, with the very life she has resisted, has struggled so mightily to leave behind." (9.17) 

Moushomi could have been written off as an evil hag after cheating on Gogol but the way the story is written prevents us from viewing her as such; her story is written kindly and we're brought close to her, which allows us to understand her.

Quotes:

"You remind me of everything that followed." (Ashoke)

This is the answer to Gogol's question, "Do I remind you of that night?" Ashoke has just revealed to Gogol why he chose that name for him: because the collection of short stories by Nikolai Gogol had allowed him to be identified by rescue workers after the train crash that nearly killed him. This answer draws attention to the tension between life and death; from an accident that nearly cost him his life, his father has emerged and wants to be reminded of the new life he created in his son by giving him the name Gogol.

"It wasn't me." (Gogol)

Gogol gives this explanation to his high school friends after he shares his first kiss with Kim at a college party. When Kim asks him what his name is, he can't imagine telling her it's Gogol - he identifies Gogol as the type of person who could never kiss a girl. Therefore, he tells her his name is Nikhil, and then he has the confidence to kiss her. Later, when he himself is in college, he will permanently change his name to Nikhil and gain confidence with women as a result.

"Gogol frowns, and his lower lip trembles. Only then, forced at six months to confront his destiny, does he begin to cry." (2.71)

At six months, Gogol is already refusing to participate in traditional Indian rituals. He's not ready to confront his destiny, and for much of the book, we wonder if he ever will be.

"He is afraid to be Nikhil, someone he doesn't know. Who doesn't know him […] It's a part of growing up, they tell him, of being a Bengali." (3.19)

In kindergarten, Gogol tries on a new, more formal name – and doesn't like it one bit, even though having a pet name and a formal name is Bengali custom. What's interesting here is that he thinks changing his name just might change his identity. He'll become a different person.

Literary Elements:

Imagery Imagery is the use of a profuse amount of description to help create an image  in our minds. This is used many times in this book, given that a lot of what takes up the book is description of what happens throughout Gogol’s life along with that of his family’s.  In fact, it is even used in the first page. Describing the home of Ashima and Ashoke, saying:

“She stares blankly at the pegboard behind the countertop where her cooking utensils hang, all slightly coated with grease. She wipes sweat from her face with the free end of her sari. Her swollen feet ache against speckled gray linoleum.”

With just a few sentences, the author has already created a picture in the mind of the readers, giving a great example of imagery.

Allusion Allusion is basically a reference to another well-known person, piece of writing, etc. An example of this in the novel is the multiple references to Nikolai Gogol throughout the entire novel. He was a Russian author, whom Gogol was named after, his name being a recurring issue throughout the book. There is a scene in which Gogol’s father, Ashoke, gives him a book called The Short Stories of Nikolai Gogol, a book by the Russian author

“Are you Cody?”

Mainly just because I like the Cody and Kurt dynamic and exploring different ways they could have met. No matter what idea I have... Kurt’s always apprehensive but it always ends the same.

“Are you Cody?”

A young guy that was laying pamphlets on a table in the waiting room looked up, confused. “No.”

“Oh.” Kurt said, feeling a twinge of disappointment.

Was Kurt supposed to be here?

Yes, because he and Blaine were meeting with Nick’s therapist today without him. Something they did once every couple of months—to touch base with the therapist about how he seemed to be doing to ‘the outside world.’

Should Kurt have been trying to actively seek out the person he knew Nick was getting ‘close’ to? Absolutely not but it was kind of hard not to.

After all, Nick had started talking to this Cody and the more time that passed, the more of the older Nick they got back.

Not that Kurt wasn’t helping Nick by any means. He knew that— after all, he was Nick’s ‘recovery partner.’ He’d gone to the outpatient treatment center, he’d stayed up with Nick on the nights he was sick when complications came up—because they still id, although not as often as they did when he’d first come home from LA.

Still, though.

Someone else was making a difference—a huge difference— in Nick’s treatment and life. It was only natural to want to know what he looked like, to hear his voice, to talk to him.

“He usually comes in around now, though… Wait, where’s your kid?”

“My kid?” Kurt looked confused.

“Well, I mean… he usually only helps with the difficult kids.” The guy shrugged. “He doesn’t do appointments, you know?”

“I…” Kurt trailed off when a younger guy with blond hair walked into the waiting room. He held the door open for someone behind him, who happened to be Blaine.

“That’s him.” The guy said before excusing himself.

“Oh my God. You’re on time. Are we in a parallel universe?” The receptionist gasped loudly enough for them to hear.

“Nope.” The blond guy said as he went through a door— he definitely had a southern accent. “It’s called spring break.”

“That’s him. That’s Cody.” Kurt whispered when Blaine sat next to him.

“Huh?” Blaine looked confused.

“The boy that held open the door for you. It’s Nick’s Cody. The intern told me.”

“Kurt, did you ask?” Blaine’s eyes widened.

“I just… want to talk to him.” Kurt bit his lip.

“You know, most kids party and get drunk on spring break?”

Spring Break.

Meaning he was a student.

Kurt instantly felt a bit better.

I mean, sure, Nick had told them he wasn’t a doctor or anything and just worked there.

And Kurt trusted Nick but he was also still grappling with the fact that Nick had ended up in this position in the first place and he was on hyper alert when it came to his oldest child.

“Most kids don’t work at a office with a girl who raises hell if anyone else tries to take her back.” They heard Cody respond.

As if one cue, the door opened and a child began shrieking.

“I DON’T WANT TO GO! YOU CAN’T MAKE ME GO!”

Within two seconds the young blond guy had pretty much jumped the counter and was at the girl. She instantly quit screaming and reached for him.

“You know this isn’t how this is supposed to work.” They heard Cody telling her as he carried her through the door, the girls’ parents following them.

“I know!” The girl chirped. “But you’re my favorite.”

The receptionist who was still behind the desk made a weird face and mouthed something to someone that was next to her.

Kurt looked at Blaine.

“Kurt, you can’t say anything to him. I mean, look, now we know it’s true. They really did meet her and he really does work here. We can trust Nick.” Blaine whispered.

“It’s not that I don’t trust Nick…. It’s that I don’t…”

“Trust Nick.” Blaine finished. “Do you want to know what I think?”

“You’ll tell me either way.” Kurt sighed a bit.

“I think that we’re over the halfway mark, things are mostly going up from here, and I think you’re having a hard time with that. The doctor said it’s good for him to branch out. He’s talking to Zach again, he’s been spending time with the baby, he’s playing with Kris again, bickering with Soph… and I know he’s not talking to a lot of his older friends but that’s okay. He’ll get there but the fact that he’s made a new friend after all of this mess is really good. I think at least. I don’t know.” Blaine sighed.

“Every time he goes to meet with Ryan, I’m afraid they’ll get in another fight.”

“That fight needed to happen no matter how upset Nick got. He needed to hear it and none of the rest of us were going to say it. They’re best friends, okay? Ryan is as close to him as Zach is. It’s not like someone else from Riverdale…” Blaine said. “And I think the most important thing from that was that they’re friends again now. Ryan told him what was what and Nick listened. Before he would have locked himself in his room for days and we would have  been worried he wasn’t eating like he should or that he’d been throwing up when we weren’t upstairs too.”

Kurt nodded.

“We’re getting closer to the end of this and Nick’s smart. Honestly he’s probably smarter than either of us and we both know it. I’m not saying we need to let go. I’m saying we need to take a couple more steps back and let Nick… try to get closer to where he was.” Blaine finished.

“I know. It’s hard.”

“Yeah and that’s why we’re meeting with her once a month.” Blaine nodded. “So we can all three talk it out and see what she thinks and what advice she has. We’ll talk to her… and we’ll bring up Cody.”

“What if we get him in trouble?” Kurt asked.

“I mean, he’s an intern. I don’t think he could get into trouble unless he was actually practicing… if he even could then. It’d depend on their policy, I guess.” Blaine looked thoughtful. “We could bring up a hypothetical and…”

“Yeah.” Kurt nodded. “Okay, let’s do that.”

…

“How has it been going since last month when we talked?” Nick’s therapist/counselor, Dr. Hughes, smiled at them.

“He, uhm… he seems really good for the most part. I think he’s had two slip ups but he’s really good about telling us and then we’ll go and get something to eat together and try to talk it out.” Kurt said.

“He has been getting very upset over menus now, though… the calories. I know he’s not supposed to even pay attention to them but I think it’s hard for him.” Blaine added.

“We’ve definitely talked about that. He’s been looking up menus online lately because not as many sites list the calories next to the prices.” She nodded and smiled. “What else?”

“He’s doing a lot better with opening up when he’s stressed out about stuff that isn’t really food or weight related.” Blaine looked thoughtful.

“And he’s been a lot better with Zach… I mean, he’s been quieter with Sophie than before but for some reason it’s harder with Zach.” Kurt said, looking stressed out. “But they’ve talked a few times and it seems like it’s doing good.”

“I know they’re twins and I think that’s where the tension is coming from. We’ve actually talked about that a lot.” Dr. Hughes nodded. “I think he feels worse because when everything was going on he avoided most of you but he regularly talked to Zach… he just lied about how things were going. Zach is actually going to come up in a few days and we’re all three going to talk together.”

Blaine’s eyes widened.

“He’s trying hard. He knows he’s hurt everyone but some twins can feel this expectation they should be in the same place and comparing their lives to each other… He’s very close to Zach so that’s why he kept in touch with him… but he also didn’t want Zach to know he was struggling once things started going south… He feels like he let Zach down, lying to him and especially missing his nieces birth. It sounds like Zach is very understanding, though, and I’m very confident that their relationship will keep getting better.”

Kurt let out a sigh of relief.

“What about the grandparents? Both sets are in New York, right?”

“My parents are kind of back and forth because my great grandparents are in Ohio. I think he talks to them once a week, though. My dad pretty much calls until Nick answers honestly… because he knows Nick.” Kurt nodded.

“And mine are down the street. He’s always run down there when he’s stressed or angry, even when he was a toddler. Once he got back from the treatment center he went back to that.” Blaine nodded. “Well, I think it took a couple of weeks… Bob had to seek him out a couple of times and then he just kind of… started doing it again.”

Dr. Hughes nodded.

“Any other concerns?”

Blaine glanced at Kurt who opened his mouth and closed it.

“How healthy is it to… make ‘friends’ early in recovery?”

“Specifically our intern Cody Parker?” She asked.

“Kurt’s pretty worried.” Blaine said. “I mean, I’m nervous but Kurt is… worried.”

“I’m worried because it seems like he met Cody before he started doing better.”

“That’s not necessarily true.” Dr. Hughes said. “From what I saw, Nick was doing better for about a month before they met… and when they met, I do not believe Cody knew Nick was a patient and I know that Nick did not know Cody worked here. Cody tripped and spilled an icee on Nick outside the building. Nick came on a day that Cody actually never works but he was covering for another intern.”

Kurt nodded.

“Of course two weeks later Nick switched up his schedule to see Cody more.” Dr. Hughes laughed.

“Is that healthy?” Kurt asked.

“They aren’t in a relationship.” Dr. Hughes responded.

Kurt let out a relieved sigh.

“They are very close, though. They also don’t have very much in common at all and I think that makes it easier to talk to Cody. Cody also has taken classes on dealing with… sensitive issues because he’s in school to be a children’s art therapist… which means he’s more equipped than most when it comes to depression and anxiety. They like spending time together but when Nick’s having a really bad day, they’ll get lunch and by the time they part, Nick is usually doing three times better than before he and Cody went to get lunch.” Dr. Hughes said.

“Is he gay? He is, isn’t he?”

“I think it’s pretty obvious what’s going on here. They really care about each other and Cody and I have had more than one serious talk about how this could negatively effect Nick… and ideally, we would discourage an intern from seeing a patient. However, Cody never sees patients. We have some kids that feel more comfortable with him in the room.” The doctor said.

“But he is.”

“Yes and in the event that Cody chooses to stay with us once he finished graduate school—which he hope he does— then Cody will not be allowed here when Nick is present should he still need counseling. Cody does not look at Nick’s files. If anything, he checks him in and out for his appointments but that’s it. Their contact inside this office is bare minimum. As far as I see it, there is no conflict of interest unless Cody is seeing Nick as his patient or listening in on his sessions. That does not mean, however, that Cody and I have not talked about this… he really cares about your son and he’s a great kid. He was supposed to be here for six months and we haven’t let him leave yet and we don’t plan to. He’s got a big heart and he cares about people.”

Kurt nodded, swallowing.

“I have spoken to both of them together outside of work. I’ve encouraged if they become a couple, they wait until Nick has been out of his out-patient treatment center for a year. It is my understanding that they will probably become a couple in two months when that year has passed.”

Kurt took in a deep breath and slowly let it out.

“Nick’s doing a lot better. He’s talking about wanting to go back to school part time next year or at least looking into it. He’s talking with his best friend again regularly… I think we still need to keep an eye on him because he’s very emotional. I think he still needs to stay off social media and he needs to keep on actively avoiding anything soccer related. Did you all go with him to his last big checkup?”

“No.” Blaine shook his head. “His godfather is his doctor.”

“Ask him about it. Nick, not his godfather.” She said.

“Is he okay?”

“I think he’ll be fine but you should ask him about it. I know he’s doing better but try to not put him in the position to keep stuff from you. He won’t lie but there’s a lot of stuff I’ve found out by asking questions that he wouldn’t have told me otherwise.”

“Oh God.” Kurt took in another deep breath.

“He’s a perfectionist. He wants to keep stuff in and private and, as I’ve told him several times, he doesn’t have that luxury right now. If you know he’s had an appointment, ask about it. Don’t ask to go with him, though. He’ll tell you the truth… you might just need to prod a little bit.”

Blaine nodded.

“Any other concerns?” she asked.

“Is he going to go back to how he was?” Blaine asked. “I mean, that might be a stupid question…”

“It’s not a stupid question.” Dr. Hughes shook her head. “Listen, he’s not going to go back to where he was. When he left, he was eighteen but still a kid… and he’s still a kid now but his whole world was pulled out from underneath him. His dream was to go to UCLA, play soccer, and go professional. He was one of the most popular people in school, had all of these friends, was a straight A student and he barely had to try to get those grades. He went to pursue his dream and got into a mentally abusive relationship, he was so stressed out that he could barely eat, when he could it got to the point that he’d throw it up, his grades started to fall, and eventually we… got here. Him in the hospital nearly suffering a heart attack with signs of multi organ failure. The truth is he’s never going to be his eighteen year old self again. But he’s building himself back up. He’ll still be kind, smart, funny, and loving. I think in a few years he’ll be athletic again too because he really misses that part of his life but his body isn’t strong enough yet. He’s lost a lot but he’s gained a lot back. He has one of the best support systems I’ve seen one of my patients have and I know he’s going to get through this. He may stumble a few times but Nick’s strong and he’s working his butt off to get himself to where he needs to be.”

“What else should we be doing?”

“Keep asking questions even if he seems so much better than before. It holds him accountable. He won’t lie and if he needs help, talking it out with someone makes it easier for him.” She suggested. “Usually he’ll do 80% of the talking in our appointments… especially if he’s in a mood. If you can tell he’s struggling, don’t just leave him be. Try to figure out what’s going on. I know he likes to be independent but sometimes that’s the opposite of what he needs. Anything else?”

“You think he’s doing good?”

“Yes. He’s further along that I thought he would be the first time I met him. He’s made leaps and bounds… he’s still got a while to go, but he’s getting there.” She nodded. “I think you two and your family are doing just what he needs. He feels supported and it makes all of the difference in the world.”

Blaine nodded and took a deep breath.

“I don’t think I have any questions.” Kurt said, his voice soft. “But thank you so much for all you’ve done for him. We really appreciate it.”

“Oh, he’s a great kid. I love getting to know him.” She smiled and shook her head. “He’s hilarious… sometimes even when he’s not trying to be. No thank you is necessary. I’m just glad he’s making such good progress.”

Kurt smiled—a genuine one. “Everyone loves him. He’s just a good person and he used to light up the room.”

“Oh, he lights up every room he’s in when he’s here. The admins, receptions, and interns love him. He’s always making people laugh and smile.” She reassured him, squeezing his arm. “You two have my number and email. Please feel free to contact me over anything. I’m here for his family too. It takes a village.”

“Thank you.” Blaine shook her hand and headed out with Kurt.

They went to the check out desk.

“Did that go bad?” Kurt asked, seeing nobody sitting in the chair.

Blaine leaned against the wall, waiting. “No. I don’t think so. She said he’s doing good and she gave us some advice. It’s no different than any other time. Why are you so anxious?”

“It feels like midterms or something.” Kurt admitted, hearing someone announcing that there were guests at the check out desk.

Seconds later, the blond guy before that had helped with the child sat down at the desk and cheerfully said, “Hi, how are you?”

“Fine.” Blaine said, smiling.

The boy looked at them, saw Kurt, and immediately began to cough.

“Are you okay?” Blaine looked alarmed.

“He was serious? I thought he was—and you’re— Oh my God.” Cody’s blue eyes were wide. “He wasn’t joking.”

Blaine looked at Kurt, clearly amused.

“Can, uhm… you’re Cody, right?” Kurt asked, voice soft.

“You know my name. He told you my name?” Cody’s eyes widened again—because he had just calmed down from his coughing fit.

Calling myself an artist might be presumptuous because I’m nowhere near as good as most of my classmates but it’s stress relief and I like to do it… plus, I draw good animals and that’s all it takes for a kid to like you.” Cody said sheepishly. “Next year I’m going to Pratt for a Creative Arts Therapy graduate degree.”

“See, Kurt? I told you we could trust Nick’s judgement.” Blaine looked at Kurt.

“I won’t tell him about this.” Cody sat up straight. “But I don’t think you need to worry. He’s in a good place and always talks about how supportive you two are and how he feels comfortable coming to you with things… and he talks about how thankful he is to have you two as parents.”

chapter 58- the end

Later that night, after I had given gifts to and received gifts from all of my friends, I faced the real challenge that I have had since as long as I could remember: going to bed on Christmas Eve. It was absolutely the most childish thing, but something about Christmas has always just made me happy and excited. Eventually, around eleven o’clock, I am finally able to fall asleep peacefully on a cold, snowy, quiet Christmas Eve night.

My excitement had apparently causes exhaustion, though, because now as I sit up in my bed on Christmas I realize that it’s already ten in the morning. The second I gather my thoughts and realize that it’s Christmas, I don’t even bother changing out of my pajamas before rushing downstairs.

I find mother and father at the breakfast table in the kitchen, drinking their morning coffee. “Merry Christmas, Ronnie.” Mother smiles as she notices me practically run into the room.

“Merry Christmas.” I smile back, spinning around on my toes.

“I guess we can go ahead and start opening presents.” Father laughs as he stands up from his chair and walks over into the living room with me, mother following close behind us. By the end of the day I was left with much more clothes, jewelry, perfume, and makeup than when I started the day. It was hands down my favorite Christmas so far, but I’ve found myself saying that about every Christmas for the past few years.

Now that Christmas has passed, winter break is beginning to feel much more sluggish. I’ve already finished all of my assignments for the break, but it’s too cold to go out and do most things that I would normally do. The girls would probably want to go ice skating if I asked, but afterwards that would make me even more sluggish.

Suddenly, the solution to my problems arrives through the ringing of my phone. “Hello?” I ask as I raise my phone up to my ear.

“Hi, Veronica. It’s J.D., how are you?” I hear a voice respond on the other line.

“Well, I’m doing quite good now that you’ve called. It’s been awfully boring in the Sawyer house recently.” I complain to him.

“It’s been awfully boring here today, too. Why don’t you see if you can come over in a little while, maybe around four o’clock?” J.D. suggests and I feel myself begin to smile.

“That sounds absolutely amazing. I’ll go ask and then call you right back, bye.” I respond before hanging up the phone and going downstairs to hunt for mother, which takes slightly longer than usual because she isn’t in her usual lounging area of the living room, but instead outside on the porch. “Mother,” I start up, causing her to lift her head from the magazine she had indulged herself in. “Could I go over to J.D.’s house later today?”

“Sure, do you know what time?” She answers with a question, a small smile forming on her lips.

“He said four.” I respond. Mother nods and goes back to her magazine, a sign that I was excused. I rush back upstairs to call J.D. back and let him know that I could come over. After doing so, I check my clock and see that it was already 3:40, so I decide to go ahead and get ready. I put on proper clothes and fix my hair, as well as put on jewelry, which included the necklace J.D. had given me for Christmas, since I had already deemed it to be a part of the jewelry that I wear almost everyday.

I travel back downstairs and J.D. arrives very soon afterwards. We just say our simple hellos and wait to hold actual conversations until we get to his house. “I do have a little surprise for you today.” J.D. starts up conversation as we walk into his living room.

“And what would that be?” I ask nervously, although his tone suggested that this was a good surprise.

“I got accepted into Ohio State.”

“J.D., that’s amazing!” I smile as I hug him. Seeing how happy he was about the subject made me happy too, but once I thought about it more I began to have very mixed feelings. He would be able to live on his own and have more control over his life, as well as get away from his father which is amazing, but he would also be away from me for a year.

“What is it?” J.D. asks as he pulls away from me, probably noticing my change in facial expression.

“Oh, nothing. It’s just- you’re going to be gone for a whole year.” I remind him.

“It’s not like I won’t visit on weekends or anything.” He laughs, lifting my spirits slightly. “Besides, I won’t be leaving for, what, another year and a half? We don’t have anything to worry about just yet.”

His words do help out a decent bit as I realize that we’ve only been together for about three months and we have a whole year and a half before he leaves. “You’re right. So, what are we doing today? Because my vote is on movie night.” I smile, attempting to forget about him moving.

“Well then, I guess we’re having a movie night.” J.D. smiles back before leading me into the kitchen. We get the usual snacks of sodas and popcorn before heading over to the couch where J.D. takes on the job of finding us movies to watch. “Just our luck, this channel just started playing Creature from the Black Lagoon no more than five minutes ago.” J.D. comments before coming to sit down by on the couch. We had pretty much gotten to the point where we didn’t have to ask the other if they like a certain movie. We had a decent understanding of each other’s taste; that taste being pretty much any sci fi movie.

“So, do you have any plans coming up soon?” I ask J.D., striking up a conversation amid the movie.

“Other than preparing for the return of school, not really. What about you?”

“Heather McNamara wants me to sleep over on Friday, so that’s where I’ll be spending my night.” I sigh with a light smile.

“Now that is the one that you are actually friends with, correct?” J.D. asks me. We don’t really talk about each Heather individually, I tend to refer to them as a whole, so his confusion was justified.

“Yes. Then there’s Heather Chandler who is the leader, also the one who threatened to kick me out a few weeks back, and then there’s Heather Duke, but I never really talk to her, at least I haven’t really since that one trip to the drive in. Oh, yeah, she was the one who invited me to that. I don’t hold it against her or anything, we just lead very different lives.” I explain to J.D.. Listening to Lincoln

I am a huge fan of the writing of David S. Reynolds, historian of American ideas and professor at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. (Readers should be careful not to confuse him with Cambridge University professor David Reynolds—no middle initial—who writes books primarily about twentieth century foreign policy and international relations. And also not with the Australian racing driver of the same name, co-winner of the 2017 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000.) The David Reynolds I wish to write about today, the one with a middle initial who doesn’t drive racecars for a living, has written several books that I’ve admired greatly over the years, most notably his 2009 book, Waking Giant: America in the Age of Jackson, but also the truly remarkable Walt Whitman’s America: A Cultural Biography, which came out two years later in 2011. And I also enjoyed reading his impressive 2012 volume, Mightier Than the Sword: Uncle Tom’s Cabin and the Battle for America, which book I think helped me understand the cultural milieu of the years leading up to the Civil War more than any other single volume I can think of. (For those of you who haven’t read any of the above, you are in for a huge treat. The author is just five years older than I am, but seems to understand nineteenth-century America more profoundly, and more broadly and deeply, than any other author I’ve read—including authors who themselves lived in the nineteenth century. Sometimes you really do need a little distance to see clearly.) And now I’ve just finished reading his latest book, Abe: Abraham Lincoln in His Time, published last fall by Penguin Press.

There are, of course, a lot of books about Lincoln out there, including many full-length biographies. And yet Reynolds manages to carve out space for a novel contribution to the world of Lincoln research, one in which he presents the man not so much in terms of his accomplishments (although that too) but more specifically in terms of the cultural milieu in which he grew up and flourished. It is, as noted above, a remarkable accomplishment and I recommend the book beyond highly. But I write today not merely to recommend an excellent book, but to tell you something that reading Reynolds’ helped me understand about our nation now by drawing me back into the story of our nation then.

One of Lincoln’s best known early speeches is the so-called Lyceum Address, which he delivered on January 27, 1838, at the Springfield Young Men’s Lyceum in Springfield, Illinois, as a twenty-eight-year old member of the Illinois State Legislature. I noticed Bret Stephens writing about this speech in the New York Times a few weeks back (click here) and found what he had to say about Lincoln in light of the events in Washington of January 6 compelling. But that only drew me back to Reynold’s book, where that specific speech is dissected and analyzed masterfully and intelligently, and set into its larger context.

The nation was in dire straits in the late 1830s. The slavery issue was front and center, forcing people either to support abolitionism or to be pro-slavery. In many quarters, what Lincoln called a “mobocratic” spirit seized the day. An anti-slavery newspaper editor, one Elijah Lovejoy, had just been murdered by a racist mob in Alton, Illinois. In Cincinnati, pro-slavery thugs broke into the building housing an anti-slavery newspaper and hauled the printing presses to the banks of the Ohio River and threw them in. In St. Louis, a Black man named Francis McIntosh had just been chained to a tree and burnt to death after shooting a policeman who was harassing his friends. In our own New York, pro-slavery mobs demolished stores and churches deemed to stand for abolitionism. There were pro-slavery riots in Manhattan, as well as in Connecticut and New Jersey. Nor was the violence that had seized the nation rooted solely in the slavery issue: anti-Catholic rioters burnt a convent to the ground in Charleston, Massachusetts, and attempted to murder the nuns who lived inside. So that was the background for Lincoln’s address at the lyceum in Springfield: his big point was that the issue on the nation’s table was not about slavery or about religious pluralism; it was about the power of the mob and whether the nation would choose to reject “mobocracy” and be guided forward solely by elected officials sworn to uphold the Constitution. That, he submitted, was what the nation needed to decide. Is this starting to sound at all familiar?

Lincoln saw the matter clearly, too, writing that “whenever the vicious portion of the population shall be permitted to gather in bands of hundreds and thousands, and burn churches, ravage and rob provision stores, throw printing presses into rivers, shoot editors, and hang and burn obnoxious persons at pleasure, and with impunity; depend on it, this Government cannot last.”

His second big point will also be resonant with modern readers. The nation was founded in revolution; the right to rise up against a despised central government and seek autonomy through independence is the foundation stone upon which the nation came into being. But what do we who live today do with that revolutionary spirit when citizens claim it as their justification for wanting to destroy the union, for refusing to accept legitimate election results, for seeking to accomplish with armed insurrection what they have failed to achieve through the normal instruments of self-expression that guide democracies forward into their own futures? It isn’t a ridiculous question at all—and it is one that Lincoln would eventually pay with his life for answering in the specific way he did.

The key for Americans in his day, Lincoln declares, lies in understanding that the sole way to honor the revolutionary spirit is to embrace the republican ideals upon which the founders founded the nation. “As the patriots of seventy-six did to the support of the Declaration of Independence,” Lincoln says clearly, “so to the support of the Constitution and Laws let every American pledge his life, his property, and his sacred honor.” To this single point, he returns again and again in his remarks in Springfield. “Let reverence for the laws be breathed by every American,” he said, “[and] let it become the political religion of the nation.” And as far as the notion that armed insurrection is somehow the birthright of true patriots schooled in the founders’ ideals, Lincoln has this to say: “Passion has helped us, but can do so no more. It will in future be our enemy. Reason, cold, calculating, unimpassioned reason, must furnish all the materials for our future support and defense.”

Lincoln’s Lyceum speech was delivered just two years after one of the greatest of all American essays, Ralph Waldo Emerson’s “Nature,” was published. Did Lincoln read it? My guess is that he did. For one thing, Lincoln was extremely well-read, a point to which Reynolds returns again and again. And I can hear Emerson clearly in some passages of the Lyceum address as well. Emerson’s point was that God speaks to the world through nature itself, making point after divine point to humankind through the intricacy and beauty of the natural world. And so does Lincoln turn to nature to make his point even more grandly by seeing the insurrectionists and rioters of his day as enemies not only of the republic but of nature itself: he describes the Founders as “a forest of giant oaks,” but then notes that an “all-resistless hurricane has swept over them, and left only, there and there, a lonely trunk despoiled of its verdure, shorn of its foliage.” America itself is identified with Eden: the United States occupies, Lincoln wrote, “the fairest portion of the earth as regards extent of territory, fertility of soil, and salubrity of climate.” But now the enemies of democracy have despoiled paradise: instead of the trees of Eden dripping with luscious fruit, in Mississippi both white people and Blacks “were seen literally dangling from the boughs of trees upon every roadside,” a horrific sight almost as omnipresent as the “native Spanish moss of the country, as a drapery of the forest.

Reynolds himself draws the obvious conclusion, writing that “the natural world—oceans, trees, a quarry, birds, snow, sun, and so on—here solidifies Lincoln’s ideas. The earth yields a political message: rebuild the edifice of liberty on solid ground by obeying the law, or else the hurricane of revolutionary passions will tear it down.”

So these are the thoughts I bring to my contemplation these days of our American present. Each day brings new arrests of those who entered the Capitol on January 6. The Senate is gearing up to try ex-President Trump on charges of inciting insurrection. The political landscape President Biden will have now to negotiate is changed, and fundamentally so, from what it would or could have been even just two or three months ago. To compare the riot at the Capitol with the burning of the Reichstag sounds exaggerated, but even making that comment is unsettling: even just a month ago, who would even have understood it? Or been able to imagine it?

As we move forward into uncharted waters against a background of the pandemic politics, I suggest we look forward by looking back. And I suggest we start by reading and rereading Lincoln. David S. Reynold’s book is an excellent place to start and I recommend it highly. But even more important is encountering Lincoln through his own words, through the story of his own life. Lincoln was president more than a century and a half ago, but he casts his shadow still across the land. And that, I think, is a very good thing indeed.

15 Self-Help Books that Really Helped

If you type “self-help books” into Amazon’s “Books” category, you’ll get more than 675,000 hits, and their “Kindle” category lists nearly 300,000. That’s a lot of self-help!

But how many of these books have actually helped? And how many books outside the “self-help” category have been even more helpful?

Just for kicks, I drew up a list of the 15 books that, over the course of my lifetime, I’ve found most helpful, either personally or professionally. Here they are in the order in which I read them.

The Marriage of Heaven and Hell, by William Blake

I first encountered this part visionary / part comic / part poetry / part etching long poem in 1969, in an English class, while an Engineering student at Cornell University. I had grown up a kid scientist, and my hope was that I’d become a NASA engineer. I was also very much in my head and not so much in my body, in the world of logic and not so much the world of emotion. Blake’s poem convinced me I had to change all that or else live out my days a reduced version of myself. This powerful piece reached out to me over 200 years and 6000 miles and changed not only my focus (from Engineering to English major) but also set in motion a process of actualizing the more suppressed parts of myself, a lifelong activity that began then and there. Thank you, Mr. Blake!

Tales of the Dervishes, by Idries Shah

I read this book in 1970 in what officially was an English Composition class but was really a class in what for me were radically different ways of thinking and seeing. Tales of the Dervishes, a collection of Sufi teaching stories, was my first introduction to Eastern thought. The tales are in the form of parable, and they’re intended to be understood differently according to the ability of the listener/reader. Some I still vividly recall and have used in conversations with friends and therapy clients. I went on to study with a Sufi guide for a while, and learned from him a Sufi meditation practice aimed at increasing intuition and creativity that seemed to open up a kind of 6th sense. Remarkable stuff. I’ve since migrated to Buddhist practices, but I continue to find the Sufi teachings and practices intriguing, and my experience of them began here.

Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, by Robert Pirsig

Sitting in front of me on my desk right now is the copy of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance I bought in August, 1974, and carried with me on my own motorcycle trip from Buffalo, out to Indiana, down to Baltimore, and finally up to New York City, where I stayed for 6 years. I was a year out of college, still trying to figure out what to do when I “grew up,” and Pirsig’s book came out shortly before I started my trip. Though at the time it seemed clichéd to take such a book on a motorcycle trip, and it was one more heavy thing to add to the already overstuffed pack strapped behind me on my little Yamaha 200, it turned out to be exactly the right thing to guide my inner journey, and even helped me diagnose and repair a motorcycle issue that led to my seizing a piston in Ohio.

It’s been 42 years since I read this book, and when I flip through it and see the sentences I underlined I’m sometimes puzzled by those choices, but it still leaves a feeling in my chest of almost indescribable  longing, wonder, excitement, and calm. I can’t say many other books have had as lingering an effect, so this one makes the “Books that have inspired me” list.

Let Us Now Praise Famous Men, by James Agee and Walker Evans

James Agee and Walker Evans’ book of lyrical prose and hard-edged images was one of three books I brought with me when I moved to NYC in 1974, and one of a short list that had a major influence on me as a young writer. This was the first book I’d encountered that looked and felt deeply about a group of people largely ignored by the rest of the country, and it directly influenced my own several-year project photographing and interviewing the people I encountered living or working the streets of Manhattan and Brooklyn. I have yet to encounter anything that quite matches it in its powerful synergy of prose and photographs.

The Drama of the Gifted Child, by Alice Miller

I encountered this book in the mid-80s, a year or two into my first serious round of psychotherapy, and it was as if all the lights suddenly went on in a previously dimly lit room. Although it’s been a long time since I read The Drama of the Gifted Child, the shock of recognition – of the dynamics of my family, of my role in it, of the roles filled by my siblings, my mother, and especially by my father – became starkly revealed in a way no amount of discussion or dream analysis had approached. There’s something compelling about how some authors can strip away the confusion surrounding a complex psychological set of interactions and lay bare the bones of it, and Miller did that for me in this book.

Iron John, by Robert Bly

In Iron John, Bly translates, interprets, and expands a little-known Grimm’s Fairy Tale that depicts the path of a young prince growing into manhood. Bly uses the folktale as a frame for the larger story of how men of the last few generations have been taught to be men mainly by women and, more recently, also by the media. He portrays what has been lost and gained as a result. I read this book shortly after it was published in 1990 and found it to be the brightest lens on men, and what was difficult about being one, I’d ever seen.

Bly, a poet I’d first encountered at Cornell  University at an anti-war rally, not only precisely and lyrically delineated mens’ problems, he also outlined a solution and taught it to large gatherings of men.  (I attended a weekend workshop he held at Brandeis University.) Bly sought to bring together older and younger men to promote a return to a male apprenticeship process lost in the industrial revolution and the nuclear family. His aim was to help us break out of our extended boyhood. Bly’s book and his gatherings of men greatly enlarged, for a time, a nascent Men’s Movement that roughly paralleled the Women’s Movement of the 60s and early 70s. Today, I still recommend Iron John to male clients, and also to women who want to understand men.

Life After Life, by Raymond Moody Jr.

In 1993, I had a near-death experience as a result of a series of medical errors. At the time, I’d never heard of a near-death experience. This was the first book I read that opened my eyes to what I had gone through. Several others followed, as well as a subscription to the International Journal of Near-Death Studies, membership in a group of near-death survivors, and eventually, transitioning from a PhD program in English to one in counseling psychology. Nearly a quarter of a century later, it’s still not clear to me exactly what the meaning of an NDE is, but Moody’s book did a credible job of documenting the phenomenon, one I still find more valuable than the extraordinary claims of those who have more recently, and famously, written about near-death experiences.

Being Peace, by Thich Nhat Hanh

I read Being Peace about 20 years ago, and then again in 2014. It was the first book by the Buddhist teacher and writer for me, and it is, I think, a seminal work, capturing in one short volume the essence of what he would go on to explicate in his many books since this one. The first time I read this book, I had never heard of Thich Nhat Hanh and was attracted to the title. I read it in a couple of sittings. The second time through, I read the book in short bursts, one section per week, in the company of other people who also follow Thich Nhat Hanh’s teachings. It took several months to complete the reading, and it was a far more profound experience. Each short segment has layers of meaning and emotion that take time to settle into the soul. Highly recommended as a first place to meet this wise teacher and his work.

Focusing, by Eugene Gendlin

Although it was ten years or so between the time I bought Eugene Gendlin’s Focusing and when I actually began to use this technique in my personal life and my therapy practice, in many ways it is now at the heart of both. In the late 60s and early 70s, Gendlin teamed up with pioneer psychologist Carl Rogers to try to figure out why some people seemed to get better with therapy while others did not. After screening for all the factors one might suspect made the difference – therapeutic training and approach, experience, types of problems clients came in with, demographics, etc. – it turned out that the dominant factor was something clients either came into therapy doing (and they got better) or didn’t do (and they usually didn’t). Gendlin realized that this factor was a natural human quality, and he created this book, and many others, to help those of us who didn’t natively do it learn how.

I have practiced Focusing for many years, and I have taught it to a wide variety of clients so they can do it themselves. Easier to do than to explain, Gendlin’s Focusing handbook nevertheless does an excellent job of summarizing the rationale behind it, the technique itself, and what to do if things don’t seem to be working.

The Highly Sensitive Person, by Elaine N. Aron

Aron’s book The Highly Sensitive Person is one I wish had been written decades ago. It helped me understand that I’m a “highly sensitive person” – someone who takes in, on both a sensory and emotional level, more than most people do. There are a lot of us – according to Aron, some 20% of the population, a figure validated by an independent study done by Harvard and the University of Toronto a few years after Aron’s book was published. Being “highly sensitive” is a blessing and a curse: We can’t screen much out, so all kinds of things bother us that don’t bother most people, but we also have more data available at a conscious level, and sometimes we can do things with that data that people who automatically screen more out cannot. The simple test for this type of sensitivity is on Aron’s website, hsperson.com, and her practical advice for how to cope with this characteristic is a uniquely valuable resource.

When I Say No, I Feel Guilty, by Manuel J. Smith

This is the book I most often take off my shelf and show to clients. Even if all you learn from it is the “Broken Record” technique for saying no and sticking to it, and you accept that his “Assertiveness Bill of Rights” really does apply to you, When I Say No, I Feel Guilty will change your life for the better. I wish Manuel Smith had written it 50 years ago!

The Anxiety & Phobia Workbook, by Edmund J. Bourne

This book is the most helpful book on anxiety I’ve encountered, and one I pull off the shelf to show a client almost as frequently as When I Say No, I Feel Guilty. Bourne knows anxiety from the inside out, and his comprehensive work on the subject is a balanced approach comprising psychoeducation, tools, and strategies that anyone suffering from anxiety can benefit from. His approach to understanding and healing the damage from mistaken beliefs alone is enough to make the book a worthwhile purchase. His chapter on panic attacks has helped many of my clients completely overcome this disorder. A must-read for therapists and anxiety sufferers alike.

Art & Fear, by David Bayles and Ted Orland

Art & Fear is the most concise and friendly companion to anyone trying to define themselves as an artist that I have so far encountered. In a series of concise essays, Bayles and Orland (a photographer and potter, respectively) put forth most the anxiety-provoking aspects of being an artist and offer sound, accessible wisdom on how to stay grounded, motivated, and focused.

The War of Art, by Steven Pressfield

Pressfield’s concise assault on Resistance and his distinction between the professional and the amateur artist helped me break through some substantial blocks along the way to creating my book Paths to Wholeness and inspired at least one artist I know to start making the transition between hobbyist painter to pro. Highly recommended for any creative person who feels held back by the mundane. His last paragraph is a terrific sendoff, the culmination of all that came before: “Creative work is not a selfish act or a bid for attention on the part of the actor. It’s a gift to the world and every being in it. Don’t cheat us of your contribution. Give us what you’ve got.”

Paths to Wholeness: Fifty-Two Flower Mandalas, by David J. Bookbinder

If you don’t blow your own horn, journalist Jimmy Breslin once said, nobody else will. Writing Paths to Wholeness was one of the most powerful self-help activities I’ve engaged in, in a life of practicing self-help. In it, I tried to distill into one volume the best of what I’ve learned as a therapist, writer, photographer, and person. Under Contract (Post 100) 8-5-15

My VA loan came through after being bureaucratically stymied for what seemed like forever.  I waited patiently and looked at houses with a realtor that my brother Sean had recommended. My dad had picked my banker.  Both are nice people; Cindy, our realtor, is a member of a Catholic parish in Cuyahoga Falls called IHM.  My life seems to balance that way.

Looking at houses was a balancing act as well.  It seemed silly to be looking for a four bedroom house at a point in my life when I feel I should be jettisoning my attached material possessions rather than collecting more.  It makes sense on one level; it is not like I can move into a senior community as long as Stephen Jr. lives with me … well, at least not for another 25 years. I received lots of advice concerning my house choice, a subject to which I remain largely ambivalent although I do have a strong preference not to live in a yurt.

Stephen’s needs were a consideration in where I was shopping for property.  It looked like Kent, Ohio was one community of my three targeted locals that fit his needs the best.  It is a college town with plenty to do and public transportation. On the other hand, Streetsboro was a good choice for Natalie and Nick.  A Streetsboro house would mean that Natalie would not have to change schools and it is pretty close to where Nicholas starts college in a couple of weeks. My father lobbied heavily for Streetsboro.  Abby reserved a personal veto for anything in the town of Ravenna, which was the closest to my work and seemed to present the best value with regard to pricing.  She argued that my dad-bod would not look presentable in the white muscle shirt that seemed to be mandatory for shirt wearing men in Ravenna Township.  I got uppity for a while, but eventually I realized that I really didn’t care enough to pipe my part of the tune in a duet of discord.  I preferred to let Jesus decide.

The process itself had become a barefoot marathon through a cactus desert.  Once the VA finally approved my loan, immediately, for some unexplained reason, the balance in my checking account began to hemorrhage. My cash flow seemed fine for a house purchase with the salary I now make and my expected expenses, but there was no way that I was going to buy a house without understanding where my money was leaking to.  I understood that I had made several recent weekend trips that were not freebees, but my dad was only charging me rent in Dairy Queen Dilly Bars so that ought not to have been a problem.  Despite my predicament, I went ahead and scheduled a last look through the properties that most interested me (mostly in Ravenna,) two in Kent on waterfront properties and a couple in Streetsboro, a town where the worthwhile buys tend to disappear like vapor almost as soon as they appear on the market. Out of the ten properties I requested to view, only three made the docket for the Tuesday afternoon tour-de-force on which Nick and my brother Sean offered to accompany me.

The property that most interested me was a Ravenna home that was priced really low because of some apparent damage that didn’t seem to amount to a hill of beans. Because my bank account had suddenly turned into angel food cake, a value property seemed the most sensible choice. Neither of the waterfront properties had made the list anyway, so I had already settled on continuing my life as a landlubber.  I did have fantasies about canoeing myself back into shape while humming the theme from Hawaii Five-O, but my aquatic dream had been scuttled in untimely fashion by someone else’s similar nautical interest.  

One Streetsboro property made the list as well, but it was located in a development that I had previously scoured clean without finding anything suitable.  Still I always tried to look at any Streetsboro properties that showed up on the three realty search engines that Sean had steered me towards.  I expected 1175 Delaware Trail to be another dud, because it had stayed on the market for a week and a half, something that does not happen with desirable Streetsboro homes.  Nevertheless, I had high hopes for the Ravenna property on Bent Oak Trail, with its strange support braces in its basement.  

Meeting the realtor’s assistant, Dee, at the first property I found that it needed quite a bit more work than I was willing to commit Nicholas to accomplishing so I ruled it out immediately.  On Home Hunters International and all the other house search shows that my Dad binge watches when Dancing With The Stars is out of season, the couple never seems to like the first house much so I was unconcerned.  I knew that the next house was the one I wanted anyway. It had everything that I thought we needed plus a low price with only the basement issue that I could let the house inspector tell me more about.  I pulled out of the first driveway with a feeling of confidence.

 As I cruised triumphantly into the driveway of the Bent Oak Trail property that I had been thinking about for weeks, I was immediately perplexed.  There was no coy pond.  I thought I remembered that the property had one of those over-sized outdoor fish tanks that end up getting all mucked up from the overhanging trees, but I couldn’t see a “water feature” as I approached the front door. Sean and Nick met me at the entry where Dee was fiddling with the combo lock on the door knob. They had missed the first property, but I explained that it wasn’t a viable property.  I asked Nicholas about the missing pond as I believed that he had previously looked at the basement damage house with Abby on a trip when I was tied up at work.  He explained to me that I was thinking of a different property just as Dee swung the door wide and opened the book to the second chapter of my disappointment. This address on Bent Oak was a property that I had looked at before but it was not a very interesting one to me. It was an obvious foreclosure where even the kitchen stove had been removed – another fixer upper that I had no energy or funds for repairing.  

Strike two left me in a fog.  I hadn’t seen anything viable and we were headed towards a neighborhood where the predominate decorating style seemed to be a last pocket or resistance by a misguided clan of people who were way too nostalgic for the set of the original Brady Bunch.  My “original” caveat is in place because I can no longer keep track of which shows have not been recycled and updated by lazy screenwriters to populate an increasingly pregnant channel line-up over bloated with specialty programming including unnecessary channels auctioning jewelry and kitchen gadgets.  I remain hopeful but not terribly optimistic that some charitable soul has bought the rights to Gomer Pyle USMC and Green Acres with the express purpose of preventing the victimization of a modern television audience with rehashed subject matter that was vapid the first time and for which there is positively no need to redecorate with new window-dressing.

So my expectations were pretty low for 1175 Delaware Trail; I was hoping for Petticoat Junction, but more than expected Sanford and Son or Chico and the Man (I really watched a lot of bad television growing up.)  The house looked pretty small from my caboose position in our four car caravan.  It seemed like we were headed towards another underwhelming experience. Dee opened the door and I entered with my hackles at the cringe-ready, and discovered that everything was very good. The house seemed to be well-kept with an adequate place to stash all the kids and dogs. It was the first good happenstance with regard to my house search in several days.  The experience totally confused me.  My brain now had only half a migraine.  I had been praying for a clear choice and my menu had now been limited to one entrée in a location heavily favored my youngest daughter and her grandparents.

I decided to go to Adoration a day early to contemplate the purchase and my financial dilemma.  Stephen, Nick, Natalie and I went the next night, a Thursday.  As I relayed last week, I felt very peaceful about making the purchase even though the money issue remained unsolved.  Natalie’s prayerful impression was also that the Delaware Trail residence would be a good house for us even though she had never seen it herself. So I trusted in God and told Cyndi, my realtor, that night that I wanted to make an offer on the house.  She confirmed that her feeling also was that it was the right house for our family.  She would prepare the paperwork for me to sign the following afternoon.

 Nicholas called me the next morning early as I sat at my desk working on a PowerPoint presentation that I planned on inflicting on some unsuspecting people the following week.  He had been reviewing our bank account and had discovered that my last two paychecks had not been direct deposited into our account, a likely root cause of my mysteriously plunging net worth.  We investigated and discovered that my direct deposit had somehow inadvertently been turned off, and my payroll department apologetically advised me that they had unknowingly issued me live checks instead of deposit slips.  Nicholas located the unopened envelopes and made an immediate deposit with a handy application on his cell phone.  So my prayers were all answered neatly in an organized fashion that resembled cards being shuffled and bridged.  I had been tested and apparently passed most probably because this realty search was purely for a nice place for our family rather than for a status symbol – I remember dancing to that cacophonous other song back in my so-called other life.

Because this process seems to be being steered with a hand other than mine on the rudder, I don’t have much worry about whether this is an exercise in materialism. As far as I can tell, Jesus has approved of what I am doing, or my path would have been blocked not bumpy.  After I was under contract, one of the waterfront properties in Kent that I had originally preferred popped back up on my search engine.  I chuckled about its sudden reappearance.  Somebody else’s contract had been created and dissolved in a convenient way that had placed me in Streetsboro where I can enjoy a close relationship with my parents, two siblings and three nieces.  I guess I didn’t get brought back across the country to see everyone just on the weekends.  Figure that.

Samuel

This is based off of a prompt asking for what my ideal canon japril family would be like. I feel obligated to let you know three things, (a) This was written about a year ago. (b) The grammar is horrible! It’s not my best, it’s not even my somewhat okay, work. So, I am sorry if I let you down. (c) I like big families, I mean, BIG FAMILIES. Just so you’re ready :P 

Samuel Norbert Avery knew that growing up in a big family meant lots and lots of patience. It meant that although it had already been 30 minutes since he had gotten ready, he had to sit on top of his suitcase, flipping through his favourite Dr Suess book and wait for the rest of the family. 

 He heard someone walk towards the living room and looked up to see his mother carrying his younger sister, who was struggling in her arms. She put her down on the kitchen counter and started to brush her hair, while his sister kept yelling really loud. Samuel sighed, thinking about how he had never been a fan of how loud his sister could be when she had to do something she didn't want to do. He recalled how his mother called her Princess Harriet when she acting this way. She had quite a reputation. His mom always said that she got it from their dad. Samuel laughed to himself, remembering how his dad would argue and say that he was pretty sure she got her lungs from mom and mom would slap his chest. 

 Regardless of whom she got it from, Samuel had always thought his sister, Harriet Celie Avery, who was 4 years old, one year younger than he was, was crazy sometimes. Gramma Catherine had always said that she's got 'quite a personality'. He wasn't entirely sure what she means by that but he guessed it just meant that the way she behaved was really too much for everyone to handle. She drove mama crazy; if she didn't like something, you knew it. She talked to strangers and always got into trouble at school for saying things you shouldn't because she was "too smart for her own good" or atleast that's what mama said. Samuel just didn't understand her sometimes. 

 April had finally managed to put Harriet's hair into a bun with a pretty flower around it, but the yelling still continued. Harriet was now squirming around the kitchen counter, banging her arms and feet, looking like a bug turned upside down.  

 "Harriet, no sweetheart. Please stop doing that. It's going to ruin your hair." April said, while trying to pick Harriet up from the counter, while also trying not to get slapped in the face by her. Samuel knew that that was definitely not going to work. The only thing that would stop his sister whenever she got this way was when she got so tired she couldn't yell anymore. No amount of scolding, or kissing or even promises to buy toys and candy could stop her. But they didn't have time to wait until she calmed down today. They had to go to the airport, because they were going to Ohio to visit Granny Karen and Grampa Joe. He'd also get see his cousins and aunts and uncles. He really liked most of his cousins. Lilly, his Aunt Alice's daughter, was his age and probably his favourite cousin if you didn't count George, Aunt Kimmy's son who the oldest of his cousin's and so cool. The rest of his cousins were fine too, and his uncles were okay.

 He wasn't a big fan of his aunts, though. Well, he did like his Aunt Alice. She was really nice to him and bought him ice cream whenever it was her turn to take him and his cousins to the park. Aunt Libby was nice enough to him, but she was mean to his dad. He wasn't really sure what she was saying about his dad but sometimes he would see her whispering really low to his mom and mom looked at her like she wanted to punch her in the face. 

 But his least favourite Aunt had to be Aunt Kimmy. She treated Samuel like he was a little baby (He was five !) and she was so mean to both his mama and daddy. She made daddy so mad, his dad always screwed up his face and rolled his eyes whenever she was talking and worst of all, she made mama real sad. A month ago, they had come to visit them for his mama's birthday, and they had gotten to a huge argument. From what Samuel could remember it was about how mama was gonna have more babies. Aunt Kimmy said if mama was going to keep being a doctor she had to stop "popping them out like puppies". After the fight, mama had gone into her and dad's room and daddy had hugged mama until she stopped crying. Dad had come out of the room after a while and asked Aunt Kimmy to please leave right now, the way he did when he was really mad but trying not to show it. Mama kept saying she didn't want to go to Ohio because it was going to be real weird between them now. 

"Jacks. Jacksooooon. JACKSON." Samuel was brought back to reality by April yelling for Jackson. Harriet was still going strong with her protest and Samuel saw that his mom was holding her head up with her hands so she wouldn't ruin her hair. 

"Yeah babe? Are we having a competition to see who can yell the loudest?" Jackson appeared in the living room, clearly surprised at the amount of yelling his sister was doing, even though he was half smiling.

"I can't Jackson. She is being impossible this morning. And I have so much more to do. I have to finish packing for us and for the twins. I have to pack snacks and check if all our passports are okay." April was running her hands through her hair, almost pulling it at it. She turned around quickly and saw Samuel sitting there for the first time since she came into the living room. "Samuel. Baby. How ... How long have you been here for?" She looked upset that she hadn't seen him before and Samuel felt bad. He knew it wasn't his mama's fault. His sister could be a handful sometimes. 

"Not long mama." He lied, knowing she'd be upset otherwise. "Hattie's gone crazy." He said, walking towards her and hugging her legs. 

"Yes she has." April said, laughing genuinely. "But your daddy is going to take care of it, ye?" April continued, throwing Jackson a hopeful look. 

"Daddy sees that he has no choice in this matter." Jackson said, laughing. Although he was clearly looking a little unsure on how to handle Harriet. "You'll take the twins?" 

"No problem. Come on Sammy. Help mama with the twins." April said, taking his hand and walking towards their room. Samuel's parents were his favourite people in the world. He loved them so much.  

He walked behind his mama as they went inside the twin's room. Samuel liked the twins. He played with them and they thought he was really cool because he was the oldest, unlike his sister Harriet who was so annoying and mean to him. The twins, Micah Holden Avery and Maya Lisbeth Avery, were both sitting on the floor playing with their toys. Micah had his arms crossed, pouting, and looked like he was about to burst into tear. Maya on the other hand, was peacefully carrying on a tea party with her dolls. 

"Mama, mama, mama." Micah started shouting as soon as they entered the room. "MAMA." 

"Yes baby boy, what's wrong ?" April said, bending down.

"Maya no play me." Micah said, tears actually running down his face now. 

"Maya won't let you play ? Maya, sweetie, let your brother play with you." April said, patting her head. 

"Mi stupid." Maya said, shrugging her shoulders. This made Micah burst into full waterworks.

"MAYA! We don't call each other stupid in this house." April, pulled Micah into a standing position and tried to brush off his tears. "Say you're sorry." 

"NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO." Maya yelled, running around the rooms, bursting into tears herself. Samuel didn't understand why they were been so weird today. Usually the twins were really chatty but they weren't too hard on mama like Harriet was. 

"YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES" Micah yelled back, running around April, crying even louder. Samuel was annoyed. It's like they were trying to see who could make the most sound. Like his dad said about his mother and sister. 

"GUYS! STOP! This is ridiculous!" April said, completely frustrated. "Sammy looks like you're the only one who woke up on the right side of the bed." 

Samuel didn't really understand how this could be the reason why they were behaving weird, but his mom was a doctor so she knew about these things more than he did. He would now be extra careful to not move around at night. He didn't want to be this crazy any day ever. 

"Maya! Micah! STOP! You're been so 'noying! BE QUIET OR WE WON'T GO TO 'HIO" Samuel yelled at the top of his lungs. The whole room came to a standstill. April looked on in quiet amusement. Samuel crossed his arms, and stares at the twins until they both sat back down on the ground, mumbling sorrys.

"How you did that is beyond me." April said laughing, giving him a kiss on his cheek. "Mama needs to go sit down for like 10 hours now."  Sighing, April started to finish packing the twins bags. 

"You tired because of babies mama?" Samuel asked, handing his mother the items his dad had laid down on the bed. 

"Yes baby. These three are making quite a racket in here." April said, rubbing her stomach.

Samuel always thought it was amazing how his mom could feel the babies inside her belly. It was also really confusing for him; just as confusing as finding out how babies were made (his parents had been so weird when he'd asked them that). Samuel also found it amazing how three babies could fit in her tummy. He was certain that the doctor mama took him to show him the babies in her belly had got it wrong. As far as he was concerned, only 2 babies could fit in there at most. 

Samuel remembered how the news that his mama was going to have 3 more babies had been such a crazy surprise. Mama used to joke after the twins were born that there will be no more babies because Daddy was going to get the snip. Samuel wasn't too sure what was being snipped, but it stopped mama having more babies. Or that's what they thought. 

Samuel remembered the day he found out about it crystal clear. He'd had a bad dream and gone to his parent's room. The door had been slightly opened and he heard lots of yelling inside. His parents never yelled. They argued, but not this loud and never this angry. His mom had been yelling at his dad for not getting the operation when she had asked him to. She was saying, "Jackson! Triplets ! I have no idea how to raise 7 babies". Dad kept telling her they'll be fine, they'll figure it out and that made mama madder. She'd yelled saying this was all dad's fault and dad had yelled back saying that if she didn't want these babies so much she knew what she had to do. Right after that there had been total silence and Samuel had gotten scared until he heard his dad say "I'm sorry, April, I'm sorry. I didn't mean that. I love you. I'm sorry" but by that time mama was crying really loud. She ran out of the room, not even noticing Samuel was there, and her dad followed her. He'd seen Samuel, picked him up, put him back into bed, and left without another word. 

His mom hadn't talked to his father for a week. He'd even had to sleep in Samuel's room for the whole week, which Samuel didn't really mind. It was like a sleepover with his dad. He remembered how his dad has brought his mom flowers and jewelry every day for a week. Finally, when they came back home from church on Sunday, mama had cooked them lunch and made all of dad's favourite foods and she had sent Samuel and Harriet upstairs to their rooms to have lunch (which was something he'd always wanted to do which had never been allowed. Samuel had been thrilled). He'd snuck out though when Harriet was too busy watching her cartoons to notice him gone and went downstairs. He saw his mama and daddy giving lots of kisses. Samuel always thought that was super icky but it made his mom giggle real loud and so he was fine with it this time, because she'd been crying the whole week. He remembered how his mother had said, "I'm sorry I overreacted, Jackson, I love you." to which his father replied with "I  am so sorry I said that. I love you too. And my babies. We are going to be fine." And then he gave mommy more kisses.

Dad went back to their room that night and both his parents had come to tuck him in and explain to him about what he'd seen last week. They'd told him that mommy was just scared because she wanted to love all her babies right and that they love each other so much always no matter how loud they yelled. Samuel had been relieved to hear that. He knew his parents loved each other very much. As a rule in their family, mama and daddy always gave each other and the kids kisses and said "I love you" before bed and every morning before school. So he knew he was very much loved by parents who loved each other very much. But this time, this fight, had been different. And even at 5 years old he knew something was very wrong. So he was happy. Happy to know that all worked out okay. Although he isn't quite sure just yet how happy he is to have 6 other siblings. 3 others were more than enough. SIX others ... He wasn't quite sure how he felt about that yet. 

"All done. Okay guys, come on. Hop on in guys." April said, rolling out the custom made go-cart. It even had a cool seat for Samuel to sit on attached to the back, near the handle. But he was 5 now. He was determined to walk all the way this time. Just like his parents. The twins got in and April strapped them up and placed their carry-ons in the compartment. 

"Sitting or walking, Sammy?" She asked Samuel.

"Walking, mama." He said, while taking her hand, and walking out of the room with her. 

April went to her and Jackson's room, packed and double checked everything, before taking Samuel's hand and walking into the living room. 

Jackson and Harriet were sitting on the couch eating ice pops when they walked in. Samuel always thought it was so unfair that Harriet got things like ice pops and toys because she was been bad. That made no sense to him. But only daddy did that. Mama always shouts at daddy whenever he lets Harriet off by giving her candy and toys. But today mama just looked at them, sighed and shrugged it off. He assumed that she was too tired to yell at anyone anymore today. 

"Aright guys. We're ready." April said, walking towards the couch.

"Well apparently Harriet doesn't want to go to Ohio today, mama. She wants to stay here all by herself." Jackson said, pulling April on to his lap. 

Samuel saw daddy whisper something into mama's ears. Whatever it had been made mama upset and she looked at Harriet, with a really sad look on her face. 

"Aw, darling." Mama said. Samuel saw tears in her eyes. He was mad. Harriet had made his mom upset again. 

April got up and sat next to Harriet on the couch. "Baby do you not want me to go to Ohio because you don't want Aunt Kimmy to make me cry?" She said, pulling her on to her lap. 

Samuel was not expecting that. He thought that maybe he didn't give his sister enough credit sometimes. She was annoying and all, but she was a nice person. They fought a lot, but he knew she loved him lots and if he was been honest he loved her lots too (even when she was so unbelievably annoying) And he knew that just like him, his sister loved his mama so much, even if she gave her a hard time. 

Harriet nodded, as Samuel made his way to the couch. His dad picked him up and put him on his lap and kissed the top of his head. 

"I hate Aunt Kimmy mama. She a big meany. I hate her." Samuel said. His sister looked up in appreciation. Samuel looked at her, assuring her his support on this subject. 

"Hey now. Nobody hates anybody." April said. 

"Well .... Except for Kimmy." Jackson mumbled, earning "the look" Samuel knew daddy was scared of. 

"You two are too adorable for caring about me so much. But mama can handle her. Sure, she gets to me sometimes, but ... Haters gonna hate, right guys ?" April said, laughing at her own reference. "The point is you can't let her ruin all your fun. I'll fight her off. You two just worry about having an awesome time okay?" 

"You ask for help, mama ?" Samuel asked. He saw his sister nod along. He knew that if Aunt Kimmy was mean again, he had someone on his side in case mama decided she needed help fighting her off. He looked at his sister and smiled. He was really starting to like her more and more. 

"Yes I will babies. I promise. Thank you." April said, giving each of them a kiss. 

"Don't worry guys. One bad word from her to mama and we're a flying back to Seattle. Next flight out." Jackson said, giving April a kiss on the cheek. 

"And we fly home if Aunt Libby a big meany to daddy, mama ?" Harriet asked April, staring at Samuel, asking for his support. Samuel nodded in agreement. Neither of his aunts were allowed to be mean to his parents. He was more than willing to sacrifice his holiday with his cousins for his parents. They could just all go to Disneyland instead. 

"Nah. Daddy can handle it." Jackson said, looking at the floor. 

"Daddy shouldn't have to." April replied, taking his hand in hers, "If Aunt Libby is a meany to daddy, what do we do ?" 

"Fly outta 'hio" Samuel said, enthusiastically. 

"YES YES YES YES YES" Harriet said, nodding her head vigorously.  

"Okay then." April said, laughing. "Now that everything is sorted, can we please go so that we don't miss our flight ?" 

Samuel quickly jumped off his dad's lap. Now that he knew there was nothing to worry about with Aunt Kimmy and mama, he again let himself get excited for Ohio. He really couldn't wait to see his cousin Lilly and at night, there was going to be fireworks which he knew was going to be super amazing. He watched his mama and dad get everything sorted out one last time.

They left the apartment, made their way downstairs and got into the car. 

"Ready guy?" Jackson asked, giving April a peck on her lips. 

"YES!" Samuel said, with his sister, in unison. "Jinx!" They both yelled together. He laughed at that. His sister could be crazy sometimes, but she was alright most of the other times. He decided that when it came to his family, no matter how much they drove each other crazy, they always needed each other and had each other's back and loved each other very much. So maybe, he finally decided, new babies weren't going to all that bad.

I am truly sorry if it wasn’t all that great. I really did try. In the end I thought, this was fluff, and even poorly written fluff is still fluff. I promise the next OS will be much better!

6/2/17 Recap

Ok, here it is, finally.  I’ve only have here what I have written about TMBG’s performance, so to put things in context, I am waiting at the rail that separates the crowd from the stage, I have been there for several hours to hold my spot, and am watching Rodriguez perform the end of his set.

Note: I’m not positive about when in the set a few things took place, so I put a question mark at the beginning of those paragraphs.

At some point during the set, Dan Miller came out and stood to the side of the stage, watching the set, I noticed him walk on, but thought it would be weird to stare, so instead I ended up looking at him awkwardly from the corner of my eye for the next 10 minutes until he left.

Then, his set was over, he left stage, and set up began for They Might Be Giants.  I was so excited waiting that I started to have trouble breathing, and was glad I brought my inhaler, although I didn’t end up using it. I saw Marty briefly, as he gave instructions on where he wanted the drum riser.  And then Flans and Danny over to the side.

As the crew, dozens of people, both with the festival and the band, set things up, I saw a few really exciting things.  Flans was using the guitar he used last tour, but he also had a red one with a checkered strap onstage as a backup.  Danny was using an awesome blue bass that I had never seen before, and looked fantastic. Also, a red Gatorade was placed behind the drums for Marty, which a very confused looking festival volunteer brought out.  Dan Miller had put on a bit of weight, and Flans had lost some.

The MC stepped up to introduce the band at 9:27, three minutes before things were supposed to start, and promised us the band would be onstage “in just a few minutes.”  That few minutes turned out to be twelve, as the band took the stage at 9:39 to screams and cheers.  They started into Damn Good Times right away and it was a very high energy performance.  Instead of singing “she can’t remember the show she saw” Flans sang “he can’t remember the show he saw,” but he kept she/her pronouns at other points in the song. I wonder why.

They moved straight in to Birdhouse in Your Soul, which the whole crowd was super into and were jumping around like crazy for.  After the song was over they said goodnight, and that they had enjoyed performing for us, acting as if they were preparing to leave the stage, and then Flans said something about giving us “The full New York treatment” which I didn’t quite catch.

? Linnell commented that it had been a long time since he had been able to see the moon when he was performing, but that now it was right up there and “I can just look up at it and daydream….”

Flans then talked about his internet habits, claiming to be on social media “23, 24, 25 hours a day” and that when he feels bad about the state of the world, he thinks “how can I feel worse” and goes on twitter.  “We’ve been hearing a lot about how unreliable the sun is as a source of energy, which is…. We’d like to dedicate this next song to the sun ladies and gentlemen”

This led, of course, into Why Does the Sun Shine.   The heat and light of the sun were caused by the nuclear reaction between several Ohio cities, and also some Ohio city names mashed together (like Dakron and Colombuland) when Linnell decided not to give the people shouting out Cleveland what they wanted.

As soon as the song was over, Linnell commented about the unusual insects crawling around on his keyboard, claiming that he had never seen some of them before.  By this point, there were literally hundreds of bugs visible on stage, flying and crawling everywhere.  Flans was less happy about the variety of insects Ohio provided “You don’t understand ladies and gentlemen, every minute that we are up here singing, we are living in constant terror of swallowing a bug.”

Linnell introduced the next song while giving us some important taxonomy information “This next song… is not about an insect, because it has eight legs.” This, of course, led into Spider, which was a bit of an unusual choice for a festival crowd, but had the man next to me in stitches.  Without pause, they went into Everything Right Is Wrong Again, which I had never heard performed lived before and was amazing, even though I got hit in the head with a glowstick during it.

? After the song ended, Linnell announced that he had squashed a bug on his keyboard.  He was genuinely concerned about it, and maybe even a little upset “I didn’t mean to, it happened while I was playing”

?Flans then came up to the mic to give a reminder “to always throw your glowsticks away from the stage” although, the only one that got anywhere close that I could see was the one that bounced off of my head and into the photographers aisle.  That being said, the crowd seemed to listen and no more glowsticks came up front.

Flans then talked about the girl who had come up to him before the show and said that they were her first tape, which he was obviously touched by.  “So here is a song that might have been on her first tape. [a beat] it’s only one and a half minutes long, so I have to stretch out the intro.” This led into Letterbox, which is always truly impressive in terms of sheer number of words per second.  

? Afterwards, Flans thanked the festival for putting this together, but joked that the backdrop, which had a large N M F, wasn’t as they had specified.  “N-M-F, it was supposed to be a T, and the M is ok, but then a B-G, this is Not…Might….ugh”

Linnell knew though “It stands for Not My Flansy”

“That’s right; it’s my new solo project ladies and gentlemen”

“No, isn’t that those protest signs?”

“Yeah, ‘what happened to that guy? We want the old Flansburgh back’”

They then went into a run of songs, starting with Science is Real, which I have a feeling they will be playing a lot in the next few years, and going into When Will You Die and then Music Jail (Quick side note: I’ve been trying to stay objective, but you guys, Danny was just so goddamn adorable and smiley, especially from this run on and ahhh).

Flans then moved to the back and started pushing different sound effect buttons, leaving Linnell to do the talking “Music Jail everyone [a few bizarre sounds from Flans] I feel like I’m there right now.”

Flans then moved to the front, and said something to Linnell off-mic.  Whatever he said, Linnell moved to where Flans had been with the sound effects, and Flans stood at Linnell’s keyboard, saying “I’ve been working on this thing ladies and gentlemen,” which tricked me for a moment into thinking he was gonna play keys (I freaked out more than a little) but instead he introduced the band, including Linnell as he walked back up to the keys, although not as John Linnell, instead saying “returning from the back of the stage to the keyboards Danny Miller”

Linnell gave Flans a quick shake of his head as he got to his keyboard, which I now realize was letting him know that he couldn’t get the sound effect they wanted either, because when Flans returned to the back, he began saying “ring ring” into the mic back there, leading into Mama TMBG, which now apparently has a live outside of older.  I don’t remember all of it, but here are some of my favorite parts.

Flans: ring ring 

Linnell: we are receiving actual phone call

Flans: ring ring

Linnell: that is the sound of a real phone ringing

Flans: ring ring

Linnell: how embarrassing

Mama: I received a text from a Nelsonville Music Fest guy, he says there is no curfew but to cut down on patter. What does patter mean? Linnell: I think that’s fake Mama: Is it a troll? Is it a troll phishing? Linnell: I think it’s a robot Mama: Is it a troll? Linnell: It was a robot troll phishing Mama: Have I been pwned? Linnell: You’ve been pwned, you’ve been pwned by a robot troll

Mama: I’ve been thinking a lot about when you were born, when all 5 of you sprung from my loins Linnell: Can you be more graphic? Mama: The afterbirth was enormous Linnell: More graphic! Mama: And the mucus plug, it was the size of your father Linnell: There were 5 of us Mama: And my two jewels, Dan and Danny Linnell: Your perfect twins is what you used to call them Mama: I get emotional just thinking about it Linnell, to the audience: this is some people’s favorite part of the show

*audience cheers* Mama: I got another text from that Nelsonville guy Linnell: I think that’s the robot Mama: He says to stop this part of the show *audience boos* Mama: Now it’s just emoticons Linnell: It’s a robot troll! Mama: Hey John? Before I go, what’s the Wi-Fi password for this place? Linnell: It is actually emoticons, it’s that finger across throat, this kinda gesture (demonstrates repeatedly), I don’t know what it means, but it looks like this Mama: Ok

*dial-tone*

Linnell wrapped up the bit, and introduced: “This is a song about the 11th president of the United States,” which led, of course, into James K. Polk.  During this song Dan stood behind Marty on the drum riser to play.  The song started out with just Linnell, real quietly at the beginning, and then built up into full rock volume.  

Flans went offstage to deal with some guitar troubles at the end of the song, and they went straight into Bills, Bills, Bills. He had to rush onstage to get to the mic to come in at the right time, but once he was there, he was super enthusiastic, going out on top of the amps once on each side of the stage to sing directly to different guys in the crowd.

? After the song finished, Linnell told Flans he would never guess “who I talked to earlier while you were offstage.” When Flans guessed Mama TMBG, he was given a curt “No.” and then they started into Older.

I had thought that Mama tmbg showing up earlier in the show had meant they were skipping this song, so I was interested to see what would take her place during the longer pause.  Nothing new there, but Linnell did an amusing bit where he turned in slow motion to look at the band, and then back to the audience with a shocked expression before starting the song up again.  After Older, they went straight into an especially high-energy Don’t Let’s Start.  

Flans then reintroduced Dan, and told us that at the end of the next song he had a really great guitar solo “so watch out for that.”  This led in to Fingertips, which was fantastic as always, but a very different experience when most of the crowd doesn’t know it by heart.  During the start of Mysterious whisper for example, I put my hands up and started swaying from side to side, which is standard, but got awkward fast, since most people didn’t catch on until Flans had demonstrated for a few seconds.

               As soon as the song ended, Marty started up the intro to Particle Man, with Flans telling us to “put your hands together on the backbeat,” while Linnell got his accordion. The requested seemed to be too much for the crowd, and Linnell said mockingly “What is a backbeat? It’s so hard!” before he began the song.  Once again, the bridge included a Swing from the Chandelier interlude, which was so powerful that I too was ready to lie like Triangle Man doesn’t exist.

Linnell went straight back to put down his accordion after the song (Only one on the accordion? Really?) and returned to his place at the keyboard.  

There was a slight, awkward pause, before Flans stepped up to the microphone “Thanks everybody! We can’t start this next song until the lights come up, because I need to see my hands!”  This got a laugh and a cheer when the lights guy obliged, and the band started in on; Let Me Tell You About My Operation. It was good, but Flans was less energetic than he sometimes is during the song (because he had to look at his hands, obviously, but still).   The final song was the Mesopotamians, which was super high energy, and the guy next to me, who was a teacher, leaned over and said ‘this is what I teach. When it was over, the guys all left the stage and the crowd began whistling and cheering for an encore.  I wasn’t sure we were going to get one, but screamed and cheered with the rest, and pretty soon, they all returned to the stage.

Linnell moved to he back to collect his accordion, while Flans stepped up to the mic.  He thanked the festival, calling their regular experience a “tunnel of torment” and said that the organization was a nice change.  While he was speaking, a guy went around gathering up some of the setlists, and replacing them with other sheets of paper, which I assume listed the songs for the encore.  As Flans left the mic, he picked up one of these sheets, glanced at it, and then crumpled it up and put it in his pocket.  Linnell moved downstage, now with his accordion, and they started into Doctor Worm.

Since Linnell had his accordion, Dan played keyboard, and the whole thing sounded great.  There was no jump off the drum riser from Danny, probably because the riser was on wheels, and Linnell had Rabbi Vole playing the solo.

Dan moved over to his guitars after the song was over, and Linnell put away his accordion.  Flans introduced Dan again, and promised us this next song had “an awesome intro.”  He then went offstage and put on a jacket (it had gotten a bit chilly), while Dan started into Millerstanbul.  As Flans came back onstage, the guitar intro now fully in swing, he made the tiniest little “ohhh” into the back mic.  It was random and hilarious, and it made Dan laugh a bit, so that he had to pause before continuing.  As always, Dan’s skills were unbelievable, and the song itself was high energy, involved Flans removing his guitar strings, and had two fake endings.

As the song wound down, Flans said “Thank you guys, you’ve been a great audience, goodnight!” and they all left the stage. The majority of the crowd took this as the end of the show altogether, and the lighting guy had to put on a pretty significant lightshow to get the crowd cheering again.

Finally, Flans, Linnell, and Marty came back up to the stage, and Flans said to us all “I’ve learned a lesson in show business today, and that is: Never Say Goodnight,” he went on to introduce the final song of the night, Dead.  As he did Danny came onstage, zipping up an adorable coat.  

Then they started the song.  This was one of the last songs they played in Philly, and it was the song where Linnell teared up, so it was incredibly rewarding for me to see him so incredibly smiley during this performance.  They finished the song, and Linnell said “Thank you, goodnight” with a teasing look at Flans, before they all left the stage, ending the show.

Marty ran out very quickly afterwards, with a clear destination, handing over his drumsticks and disappearing again in a matter of seconds.

Soon after, I was surprised to see Flans back out on the stage, and as he approached the front of the stage, I assumed he had stickers or something to hand out.  Instead, he bent down to say something to a security guard, who then helped him to step down of the amp, and onto a step above the rail separating the crowd from the stage. He then began signing things, and taking pictures, and chatting with the crowd! I was in shock, but that didn’t stop me from crowding towards where he was.

While I was waiting my turn, I watched Danny’s attempts to get his thigs packed up, while also directing the festival crew on how other things needed to be packed.  I guess that he didn’t trust the festival guys.  Some people shouted at him for setlists (which if they had been paying attention, they would’ve known had been taken offstage) he ignored them, although eventually one festival crew guy handed out the one off of the keyboards.

Then, I was close enough to hear Flans conversation with the fans.  When one of them said something about Linnell, he got really excited and started off on a tangent: about the painter John Linnell.  He asked if they had heard of the painter, talked some about his landscapes, and said that he had been friends with a really famous Romantic artist, but he couldn’t remember who (I looked it up later, I think he was thinking of William Blake).  The whole time, he was just so Excited and it was adorable.  As he wrapped up his Art History lecture, Flans told us as a group that we needed to hurry, because he was needed backstage.  We stepped up the pace accordingly.

I want to get a car but the only thing holding me back is the cost of insurance. I'm 18 and with the good student discount my dad pays $300 a month for my 02 Nissan sentra. It's under my dads name. The insurance company had me bring it to one of their authorized body shops. After 9k worth of damage, I received the car back. I was struck by an uninsured driver on 02-10-11. Because the driver who struck me was uninsured I was forced to file a claim with my insurance company(Omni Insurance). The car was towed to CJ's collision at 6128 n beechwood Philadelphia, pa ,19138 on 02-11-11. Phone number 215-848-2836. On 02-14-11 Omni insurance sent out an appraiser to evaluate the vehicle. They then faxed an estimate on 02-15-11 totaling $5300 to CJ's collision shop. I went to the collision shop on 02-15-11 to sign paperwork giving them permission to work on my car. They then began the repairs. On 02-18-11 the insurance company then deemed my car a total loss. The vehicle is a 2005 Nissan Altima SL with 96,477 miles. The NADA value for the vehicle is 10,995. According to Omni insurance a car is deemed a total loss when the repairs reach 70% of the value of the vehicle. Omni insurance valued my car at 7,415. They then proposed a settlement offer of 5826.40. They deducted 975.00 in prior damages(which I disagree with) and 1000.00 my deductible. The settlement offer included 386.40 in sales tax. After negotiating on 02-28-11 they proposed an offer of 7835.30. The value they gave my car was 9255. Again 975.00 was deducted and my 1000.00 deductible. They including sales tax and tags/registration fee in the offer. I accepted the offer out of desperation because they also stopped paying for the rental car I was driving on 02-28-11. I work, attend school and have a child my schedule requires that I have a car so I paid out of pocket for a rental car until 03-07-11, expecting the payment to be issued to my lien holder by then so I could purchase another car. I contacted them on 03-07-11 inquiring about my payment and was informed they did not pick the vehicle up from the collision shop therefore they were not issuing a payment. Hillary Clinton Is a Loser

“Loser” is perhaps President Trump’s favorite insult and, all things considered, the best alternative title for Shattered a new book that takes readers “inside Hillary Clinton’s doomed campaign.” The work reveals the dysfunction of Hillary’s leadership team and how they adopted a fatal strategy of identity politics, but it fails to draw practically any comparison to her Republican rival on qualitative or quantitative measures.

The authors, Jonathan Allen and Amie Parnes, are two journalists who covered the campaign. Surely sold this book before the outcome was known, though the publisher may be hoping to get in on the market of still-confused Democrats. The bewildered would be better served taking a field trip to my home state of Tennessee, where Trump enthusiasm is in no short supply. But I assume this is the start of a series of failure biographies on the Atlanta Falcons, the inventor of the Segway, and the producers of John Carter.

Surely we can learn from losers, perhaps more so than from winners, but I do not recall any similar book that focuses so myopically on a losing presidential campaign to the near total exclusion of the winner. There are bitter memoirs, comical takes, entire biographies, and the rare historical retrospectives on say, Goldwater’s 1964 campaign or Reagan’s 1976 campaign. But Shattered occupies a genre by itself, as a somewhat neutral, serious, excessively isolated take on a forgettable candidacy: does anyone imagine that, decades from now, the Democrat Party will be built on the shining example of Hillary Clinton?

Shattered reveals no ideological foundation that the Democrats may build on. Instead, it plainly states, “Hillary didn’t have a vision to articulate. And no one else could give one to her. In fact, the more people she assigned to the task of setting the tone for her campaign, the more muddled her message became.” A study after the campaign confirmed the point: Hillary had devoted only 25 percent of her television advertising to issues, compared to the 40 percent or more that every other presidential campaign, including Trump’s, has dedicated since 2000. No wonder that Bill Clinton apparently feared Ted Cruz as a general election opponent more than Trump, seeing a “true believer with a vision that could be articulated [and who] could tap into the same anger that Trump was galvanizing on the political right and among fed-up independents.”

Instead of issues, Hillary’s pitch was pure identity politics, right down to her slogan, “I’m with her.” That turned out to be a fine strategy to win the Democrat nomination, but not the general. Anyone who has recently spent time on a college campus or is exposed to mainstream media outlets recognizes how social justice warriors have come to dominate the conversation on the left, but less clear is the fact that identity politics is structurally favored within Democrat primary rules: “It’s all very complicated, but it boils down to this: A candidate who does best in the most Democratic parts of a state can rack up a lot of delegates fast. In many states, the delegate-rich districts are majority-minority.” As a result, Hillary could pick up more delegates in a single majority African American Congressional district in Mississippi than Bernie did by winning the New Hampshire primary. You get real insight into Democrat coalition politics when Shattered tells how Maryland unions backed Chris Van Hollen in a U.S. Senate primary against African-American Donna Edwards and planned to intentionally exclude African-American members from their turnout efforts until Hillary, on the same ballot and desperate to show strength against Bernie, intervened.

The supposed inevitability of Hillary’s victory rested on this new Obama-activated “coalition of the ascendant” and a “blue wall” of states that had voted Democrat in six straight cycles, adding up to 242 of the 270 needed electoral votes. No one realized that these foundational pillars may have been at odds with each other. By beating back Bernie through a delegate-focused identity politics pitch, Hillary abandoned her working-class white base from 2008, and failed to see how her Rust Belt primary problems might translate into a general. Ultimately, one Ohio county Democrat chairman summed up the election by saying that she lost because voters thought she cared more about bathrooms than jobs.

But Hillary’s campaign was supposed to have inherited from Obama a fine-tuned, analytics-driven, vote-mobilizing machine. Here we run into another significant problem, not only of this book, but of political journalism, where humanities majors spin understandable narratives of campaign personalities bickering in he-said she-said minutiae that most voters never knew when they made their decision. I love gossip as much as the next politico, and there is some insight to be gleaned into human relations, but politics would be infinitely better off if we had business school case studies of campaigns that included hard data. Shattered can be read without gaining any knowledge of the comparative size of staff of Trump versus Hillary, the number of voter contacts, how voters are approached, fundraising differences, media market strategy, or really any of the quantifiable mechanics of a political operation that might inform why a campaign loses. Poll numbers are occasionally noted without reference to source, margin of error, or context. Although there is a debate in the Hillary campaign about the use of analytics versus polling, the authors barely explain the distinction.

Senior staff dysfunction is on display, probably to the extent that leakers tried to blame their rivals. The fate of Robby Mook is fascinating to follow: he begins as the campaign manager who pursues a cost-effective but controversial, ultimately successful primary strategy of focusing on the math of winning delegates over the poetry of campaign messaging. His reward was demotion to membership in a “Super Six” committee that governed the remainder of the campaign on cruise control to impending victory.

Those looking for the juicy gossip of Game Change will find mostly stilted dialogue and the occasional sassy anonymous comment. But there is the rare tidbit, the most fascinating category being Hillary’s paranoia. After the 2008 campaign, Hillary raided her campaign email server and spied on the emails of her senior staff to know what they had said and done. She also assigned staff to grade every member of Congress on a 1-7 scale based on their loyalty. After the 2016 campaign, she credited her loss to three acronyms: “the FBI, the KGB, and the KKK.”

Ironic blame-casting for someone who pledged we were “stronger together.” But then this is also the woman who accused her opponents of being part of a “basket of deplorables.” Never mind that the FBI was simply investigating her misdeeds, the KGB no longer exists, and the KKK is a laughably miniscule portion of the electorate. One strand of thought within Shattered, which is to be expected when staff comprise most of the sources, is that maybe the problem was not the personnel, nor the strategy, but the candidate herself. No one could tell Hillary—hey, maybe American voters just aren’t that into you.

Bill Clinton comes off much better as he struggles throughout the campaign between defending his presidential record and adapting to the newly “super-sensitive” liberal electorate. He is the one constantly questioning the data that drove the campaign to be so focused on “the coalition of the ascendant” to the exclusion of the Rust Belt.

Some may argue that the race was Hillary’s to lose, but this book feels woefully incomplete without further discussion of Donald Trump. In fact, more time is spent describing the elaborate ways in which Hillary spokesman Philippe Reines impersonated Trump during debate preparation than on Trump himself.

All the more because Hillary outspent Trump by a margin of more than two to one. Trump deserves credit for the victory that he achieved, including penetrating the supposedly rock-solid Blue Wall. True, no non-incumbent Democrat has succeeded a two-term president of the same party since Martin Van Buren. But Trump achieved something truly special and it barely makes a cameo in Shattered as the campaign staff share bewilderment on Election Night that rural areas like Florida’s Polk County would see Hillary outperform Obama by 3,000 votes while Trump outperformed Romney by 25,000. That’s a story that the book should have told.
