Xixit - PA142
Today we're listening to excellent tunes from a really great DOS "Columns" clone called Xixit - PA142 @neoj1n
On the surface, Xixit is a pretty straightforward Columns clone. Go a little bit deeper and you find a columns clone with impressive coding, visual effects and music. Xixit was released for DOS in 1995 by Optik Software, a small American publisher that only ever released 3 games, the other two being a point and click called Igor and an RTS called War Inc. The gameplay is your typical match three…

Senior Capstone Projects 2017
Name: Ashley Hui
Project Title: Writuals
Website: www.shuli.me
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Writuals is a kit that draws on this concept, giving the user time to slow down by customizing and assembling their own fountain pen and journal. When finished with this ritual, you are left with an imperfect yet beautiful creation, much like ourselves. Take care of these objects, write in your journal with your pen, and in return, they take care of you.
For me, writing has always been therapeutic. It acts as a healing ritual that I perform in order to slow myself down in a very fast-paced and digital world. Writing therapy is the act of writing and processing of the written word in order to aid in self-awareness, self-development, and to cope with psychoneurotic illnesses.

Project Title: Wearable Organization
Website: www.lakalisterdesigngroup.com
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Being a tinkerer, I always seem to lose the tool that I just had in my hand. Therefore, I wanted to explore the idea of always having my tools within reach, somewhere on my body. In order to increase efficiency, I created an innovative way for professionals to have their most used tools on their person. The project started by researching traditional tradesmen and now aspires to benefit all professions with this idea of a new form of wearable organization.
Coming from an engineering background, I never felt as if I was fully exploiting my abilities as a creator. Until I found UArts and the ID major, I would have never considered myself a designer. However, these past years at UArts have taught me so much --  about design, about myself, and my approach. Without the help of my professors and peers, I might have been stuck crunching numbers and plugging in formulas for engineers when my passion was to be working with my hands.

Project Title: Skate Relations
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Philadelphia is known for its rich skateboarding culture and history around the country. However the city has not always been friendly or even tolerant towards skaters. The relationship between the municipality and skateboarders can most clearly be seen in the history of Love Park. The park was once internationally known as one of the best places to skate even with the risk of civil seizures of skateboards, citations, and in some cases arrest. My project investigates what would happen if the city had been more tolerant and accommodating of skateboarders.
Would the story of Love Park and other similar locations be different?
How can design facilitate both skateboarding and pedestrian use in the same space?
By designing public features that can accommodate both skateboarders and pedestrians, I am able to show this happening. I have created different designs of varying scales from park benches, benches that wrap around trees, and large scale public architecture. I show how skateboarding and public space are not mutually exclusive and should be included into the design of space.

Project Title: REpurpose
Website: giusedesign.com
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Giuseppe likes to challenge social norms and user perceptions in his designs. He believes that Industrial Design is more than just a practice –- it is a mindset to approach the world.
Consumption is a downfall for the environment. Demand requires large amounts of products to be manufactured at an unsustainable rate to fit consumer needs.  As not all created products are recyclable, they’re improperly disposed of and added to the waste stream. Of the three pillars of recycling, reduce, recycle, and reuse, reuse is the most overlooked. Reusing products helps to decrease consumer waste, and is simpler than expected.
Giuseppe’s belief is that everyone is able to recycle, but it does not have to be in the most common way.
REpurpose is a visual book that is designed to inspire readers to think creatively about reusing their disposed items. It was designed in hopes of challenging our roles as consumers, to fight the environmental negligence of manufacturers.

Project Title: Embrace : a dog leash for anxiety
Tumblr media Tumblr media
89 millions dogs were owned in the United States in 2017. Among them, nearly 23 million are suffering from multiple anxiety issues. Therefore there are a lot of dogs in animal shelters who have significant anxiety disorders, and the people looking to adopt do not want dogs who have problems. It is important to fix their fears to encourage their adoption and make them a better fit to be a family member. Taking dogs for walks is important to the dog for a healthy lifestyle, but it is not easy to bring dogs outside who are always frightened. They can demonstrate threatening behaviors like hyperactivity, barking, aggressive motions, and also can feel nervous and shake. These behaviors are not easy to control and it is hard to make the dogs relax.
Embrace is about designing a safe and non-distressing dog leash to improve anxiety in dogs. This product respects the animals by believing that owners can cooperate with their animal rather than use dominance and aversive training, and make the dog become a great family member. It supports the belief that dogs are intelligent and understand their behaviors and owners, and can fix their social problems through this leash.

Project Title: WAY (Who Are You)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
WAY, is a game that improves human interaction. It is designed to open the minds of individuals and give them a creative way to explain who they are and more importantly learn about ‘who,’ the other player is. WAY, is a method of building chemistry, ‘breaking the ice,’ and inviting new friendships. Ultimately the goal for playing is to be accepting of others.  Unlike other games that are more competition based, this game exist as a cooperative game; where you are paired with another person and both players are able to tell their. Originally designed for finding love, the cards allow each participant explain themselves while understanding the opposite player. You begin by picking cards from four categories: Personalities, Lifestyles, Values and Hobbies/ Interest. One-by-one each player will show a card and give the reason why they chose it.

Project Title: MADE
Website: www.mlkannegiser.com
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As a designer I feel a great connection to the objects I make. They are more than mere functional objects but instead each represent concepts, inspirations and feelings. There is so much beauty in the objects we pass by every day and becoming a maker has helped me recognize the people and decisions behind each design. This knowledge is what inspires me to continually observe, question and create. I believe we are all designers and thinkers and I would like to share the inspiration I have found.
We decorate our homes to become reflections of ourselves but in reality are very disconnected from the objects we own. By designing homegoods with waterjet cut perforations in stainless steel, I connect the user to the product by inviting them to engage with the material as they bend and build it with their hands. I hope to offer a deeper relationship between the object and the user through this hands on process to personalize their homes and the objects they choose to live with.

Project Title: Journeyman: A Pack for the Traveling Artist
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Art students that live in urban areas experience the daily challenges of commuting with excessive amounts of materials and projects. In addition, artists carry different supplies to and from numerous locations: home, studio, work, and a number of classrooms. They have different preferences and needs which result in a diverse use of bag types and storage possibilities.
The Journeyman is designed to help organize materials and supplies while traveling and also at one’s destination. Due to hectic schedules and the necessity to transport a variety of materials each day, this pack is modular in order to simplify the students daily commute, work, and creative routines. In order to accomplish these goals, this new bag consists of an outer compartment and a number of removable components. Each of these can be inserted or removed to customize the user's experience.
