since we’re on the topic of bookbinding, i’ve been wanting to get into it but i haven’t actually done any research (yet) other than vibes, so do u have any tips for complete beginners?? :)
@geminibookbinding is who inspired me to finally look up the whole process and figure out where to start! this is the super helpful tutorial i got from them
i had dabbled with binding before though, using Sea Lemon's tutorials to make blank sketchbooks yearsss ago. i still use her text block and diy hardcover videos as a refresher/reminder while i bind!
the biggest thing that stopped me from learning to bind printed fiction was not understanding how to print the text from home, specifically how to get the pages in the right order for signatures. it's actually so easy with some very simple to use programs: QuantumElephant for PC users (free), and I use BookletCreator on Mac ($20)
i want to go into more detail about my process and supplies from a beginner perspective, i hope this helps:
format the text in a word processor
export your document as a single page PDF
enter that PDF file into Quantum Elephant or BookletCreator, to rearrange the pages for your signatures. your program will give you a new PDF file that you can then print.
4. double sided printing: i was so so scared of this at first, but it's incredibly simple. no matter what printer you have, somewhere in your print settings will be an option to print even or odd pages.
print all the even pages first, then when the stack is finished printing, flip them over, insert them back into the paper feed, and print the odd pages.
5. fold the signatures together so you have a stack of little booklets, then mark on the spine where your sewing holes need to be. manually punch the holes using an awl, or diy an awl by stuffing a cork on the end of a straight needle.
6. sewing: take regular sewing thread and run it over a block of beeswax. this makes the thread easier to manage and holds it in place better while you sew. a curved needle is also much easier to use than a straight one, especially for a kettle stitch (using Sea Lemon's tutorial)
7. gluing: glue decorative pages (or plain, but thicker paper) to the front and back to create your end pages, then press the book flat to apply PVA glue to the spine. press it overnight so the glue dries flat. (optional: glue a ribbon to the top of the spine, then sew on headbands) finally glue an additional piece of paper (or mull) around the spine to strengthen it.
8. optional: trim the edges of your book down to create a smooth edge. this one's given me the most trouble because it's very hard to get right with a knife, and the proper supplies are expensive. check your local stationery shop (i.e. Officeworks, Staples) for an industrial guillotine service
9. cover: once you have the final measurements of your text block you can start making the cover. this is essentially gluing cardboard, binders board, or plywood etc to a sheet of fabric. the fabric either needs to be bookcloth, or have some kind of non-porous back so the glue doesn't seep through. you can diy bookcloth from any fabric with tissue paper. then glue the decorate end pages to your cover to attach the textblock!

To me as a livestock scientist it's baffling that human nutrition is still using bomb calorimeter values (gross energy) when what we balance diets on is metaboliseable energy or even net energy. What's the difference? Quite a lot!
The figure below gives a brief overview, but let's go into this a bit more because this kind of thing is literally my job IRL. And it's fun!
Source: https://www.semanticscholar.org/paper/Investigation-of-energy-partitioning-in-modern-%3A-a-Shatnawi/d5ad6bf4a523ad807b3d8cfdb52782b598f6855d
Gross energy is the calorimeter value. But some of it never gets digested and exits undigested. So if we subtract off fecal energy loss, we get DE: Digestible energy
From that, we subtract off energy lost in urine (and methane energy if you're a cow or a sheep). That leaves us with metaboliseable energy (ME), aka what actually makes it into the body potentially. This is the energy that your body can use to actually do things and is what I mostly work with. So like I might say a feed mix for a sheep is 10 MJ ME per kg feed that means for every kg of feed there's 10 MJ of energy actually available to the sheep in that feed (and 10 MJ of ME per kg of feed is a pretty standard to good feed quality density). What the sheep does with it from there depends but that is how much energy will be absorbed by the sheep themselves. And we balance diets accordingly. (The feed tags will also usually have a crude protein value which then requires additional math to estimate how much of that protein the sheep can actually digest but that'd be its own post)
But wait there's more! Your body is going to burn a bunch of that as fasting heat production aka basal metabolism aka maintenance aka the energy used to keep the lights on. This is largely a function of how much protein is in your body - especially in your guts and liver, which have massively high metabolic rates (~10x that of skeletal muscle in cows/sheep, not sure re humans) just in terms of protein turnover, secreting things, etc etc. So if you have more protein in your body your basal metabolism will go up.
So after you account for maintenance, you also have the heat increment of feeding - IE the heat produced by your metabolism of the feed itself - digesting, absorbing, etc etc. It scales with how much you eat.
And then you have the heat of product formation - that's the heat produced from storing nutrients in your body as protein or fat. It is a lot more energetically efficient to store extra energy in your body as fat, but it still generates some heat. It's just that storing protein (or exporting protein as milk) generates a lot more. That is why pregnant people and/or lactating people can feel so dang hot - especially since mammals aren't hella efficient at using energy for either, so it generates a lot of extra heat. And a good chunk of that is from protein.
So after all that, the bit that actually gets incorporated into your body is called net energy available for gain (NEG) or retained energy (RE). Which for protein is 23.8 MJ/kg protein (not protein -containing tissue which is mostly water but the actual protein itself) or 39.6 MJ/kg fat (pure fat, not including the rest of the tissue itself). Tada!
So TL;DR the caloric value on a food label is using a method that doesn't actually reflect how much energy is available to your body, but food labels for livestock do take that into account. And it's really weird that other species are factoring in what actually is available to the body but human science has lagged behind so much.
I gave my soapbox speech about how weight loss is mostly bullshit to two different patients in a row yesterday and so help me I’m pretty sure one of these days someone is going to say “but SURELY you agree I’d be HEALTHIER if I lost weight!” bc you can see the disbelief in their eyes. And like. Sure, maybe! You might see some improvement in biomarkers like LDL and A1c, and your knees would probably feel better. But you would be amazed at how much more good you can do for yourself by focusing on things you can actually meaningfully change without resorting to making yourself miserable. Eat more fresh fruits and vegetables—it’s hard bc they’re more difficult to prepare and more expensive per calorie and go bad faster than other foods, but they’re what we evolved eating the most of so they’re what our bodies need the most of. And walk around more; sure, cardio is great for you, but if it sucks so bad you don’t do it, it isn’t doing shit for you. And we evolved to walk very very long distances, a little bit at a time, so our bodies respond actually very well to adding walks into our schedules, which is vastly easier than adding workouts that are frankly designed to be punishing when the definition of punishing is “makes you less likely to do it again in the future.”
You get one life. It is shorter than you can begin to imagine. Don’t waste it hating yourself because somebody is going to make money off that self-hatred. You deserve better than to be a cash cow for billionaires who pay aestheticians and dermatologists to make them (or at least their trophy wives) look thin and beautiful no matter what they actually do.
