1971, May 6… a practical bezel for the Speedmaster! USAF Capt Alfred Worden, designated Apollo 15 CMP – Command Module Pilot during water egress & recovery training onboard NASA motor-vessel retriever in the Gulf of Mexico. Note Alfred Worden wore a NASA-issued Omega Speedmaster with practical more legible “60 seconds” bezel as NASA procured half-a-dozen of these bezels to the A15 prime & backup crews. Already during the transitional year 1967, NASA had collected practical feedback about all hardware used during the Gemini project. For their wrist watches, the astronauts requested a more legible bezel, a practical detail that Omega only addressed by 1972 in the Alaska Project II Speedmaster. However, by that time the Apollo project was at its end with Apollo 18, 19 and 20 cancelled since September 1970. Another Rolex Submariner in space October 1992, Bill Shepherd wore his Rolex Submariner again. During the 9 days 20 hours space shuttle mission STS-52, NASA astronaut & former SEAL William “Bill” Shepherd had chosen to wear his personal Rolex Submariner 5513 diving toolwatch again... this time on space shuttle “Columbia”. Shepherd was the first military non-aviator in astronaut training and commanded the first ISS Expedition crew in October 2000. Note he wore the Rolex Submariner on a long black velcro strap. Rolex has the most different space-flown wrist watch versions, as at least 8 were worn in space (GMT-master, GMT-master II, Datejust, Daytona 6263, Submariner, Sea Dweller, Yachtmaster and Oysterquartz).
