Okay, so Power Rangers is done with adaptations, but what if there was a season where every Ranger came from one of the 11 different teams whose suits went entirely unused?

Power Rangers All-Stars

It could very easily go the RPM/Dino Charge route of being its own universe, especially given that Cosmic Fury was the definitive end of that continuity. Maybe all of them could be the sole survivors from PR teams that had all fallen in battle.

The Baron/All-Star Red (Engine Fire)

ToQ 1 was my first choice for a protagonist solely because I loved the idea of the Rangers traveling via a magic train their Red owned. There’s also a bit of irony in the team being led by a Ranger from a Sentai without a leader, and it’s especially fitting since his season has a color swap gimmick. Even the All-Stars’ colors match the ToQgers. Aside from Blue, his suit is the least armored, giving the impression he’s tough enough without it.

He’s the one who’s lost the most, but Baron acts as a mostly eccentric figure, a eternally optimistic goofball who insists the team does the usual Sentai theatrics. He’s probably insane, but he gets results easily and is far smarter than people give him credit for.

Cory/All-Star Yellow

The rookie, fittingly wearing the newest suit courtesy of the 50th team. He’s the last of seven core members to join, doing so in the first episode while everyone else has already been at it for a while now, and he’s from Season 49, 7 squared. He’s also dinosaur themed, matching Mighty Morphin and fitting the protagonist well. On a more serious note, since the GoZyugers seem to be fighting each other in addition to everything else going on, he’ll be the only one who wasn’t already on a team.

He’s somewhere between Casey Rhodes and Tyler Navarro; young, looking for answers, ludicrously strong but not entirely confident in his skills as a Ranger, but he doesn’t have to lead so that’s at least one less thing on his plate.

His name is a play on Kyoryuger (“kyoryu” means “dinosaur”).

Jade/All-Star Green (FACET)

There’s no particular reason why I chose Kiramei Green, her suit’s just my favorite from her team.

Jade is Baron’s second in command. She’s the team’s heart and soul, being the most sensible person in All-Stars for numerous reasons. She’s soft spoken, yet firm. That’s why Baron trusts her.

Virgil/All-Star Blue (Phantom Force)

I wanted both of the VS Sentai to be on the core team, which of course meant I more or less had to use them for Blue and Pink.

Virgil’s a notorious showoff and charmer in the vein of Chase or Xander. He’s naturally talented enough that he doesn’t feel the need to take anything seriously, which can rub some of his teammates the wrong way.

Siren/All-Star Pink (Hyper Guard)

Siren is a direct and stark contrast with Virgil, being fierce, dedicated, sometimes even harsh. Think Jen or Sky but with Vida’s temperament. The two argue constantly but work together perfectly.

As a duo, their first initials spell out “VS”, and their individual names are a pun on “vigilante” and literally “siren”.

Rod/All-Star Orange (Cyber Corps)

The smart guy, he creates most of technology the team uses that didn’t come from their original teams. Bun Orange fit the role pretty well; he himself had the uncanny ability to get anything the team needed, and PR’s precursors to Fern (Boom and Kat Manx) were the science types.

Rod also happens to be a robot, or at least some sort of mechanical life form; all the Orange Sentai starting from ToQger, that is to say all of them outside of Battle Fever J, are nonhuman. He’s got a very similar personality to Alpha, being quick to panic and slightly unlucky.

Asher/All-Star Violet (Hexagon)

Finally is Asher, whose counterpart is the only violet Sentai to be part of the core, starting group. Personality wise, they’re practically identical to their Sentai self with a bit of Gokaiger’s Joe and RPM’s Dillon for flavor. They’re the most serious and aloof of the seven, as serious as you can be in a lavender moth suit.

Oh, and there’s four “sixth” rangers on the team I guess.

Klup means a track, to trace or copy, or 'soulprint' - more on that in a second, but first with the etymology.

LEFT: kul 'follow,' RIGHT: klup 'track,' 'trace, copy,' 'soulprint'

Klup is derived from the word kul ‘follow,’ by addition of a suffix -p, a (rather uncommon) nominalizing suffix.

The glyph comes from a picture of two animal’s paws - a set of tracks, or else a paw following another paw. The composition is the same as kul ‘follow,’ which shows two (human) feet.

The oldest sense, understandably, is of a footprint or track, human or animal. An equivalent Milim word was toq, which is also found in Yuk Tepat sometimes.

From this, its use has been extended - verbified, it means "to track, follow, or print; to copy something; to trace.

This word is also used for what I call a soulprint, which is the uniqueness of an individual spirit which is left in places a person has been.

Each individual soul is different, and can be subtly distinguished.

Sorcerers sometimes attempt to find soulprints in order to reconstruct someone’s activity or memories - or to use soulprints as material for some effect on the patient / victim. This is the basis of sympathetic magic. In ancient times this was done with pieces of a person or objects of their possession, all of which have traces of their essence. The great advance of Tepatic sorcery was learning how to capture and isolate the soulprint itself in special vessels made of hyun. Trained nimmles can be used to familiarize themselves with a persons soulprint and scan for it.

Hence, klup has extended to mean any distinctive, unique identifying individual trait - the sum of identifiable characteristics, or the essential distinguishing characteristics of an individual or thing (group).

It can be contrasted with sing ‘human nature,’ which also refers to a kind of essence; Sing is usually used to refer to those things common to or shared by all people, while klup is what distinguishes each person from other people as unique.

finished toqger!! here's some thoughts:

- in a word i would describe this show as "charming". i had a smile on my face almost every episode, it really was just a fun time!!

- not my preferred tone for a toku show but i ended up enjoying the earnestness of it all, it really made the darker moments towards the end of the season stand out a lot more

- the designs tend to be really simple so i get why it wasn't the hottest toy seller but they do have a lot of personality. toq-oh might just be a bunch of rectangles, but its a lovely bunch of rectangles if you ask me

- the cast was very fun!! lovely charming little group of youngins. want to pinch all of their cheeks

- i dont have a lot to say about the main 5 individually so ill list them out together: right ended up being a lot more emotionally complex than i first thought and i really enjoyed him as red; mio is such a lesbian and i love that; kagura had a lot of moments i liked and she was my favourite personality wise; normally i dont like stoic smart rangers but hikari was an exception to that; tokatti was fun but i dont have a lot of thoughts beside that

- akira though... now that's a sixth ranger!! i really enjoyed his personality and arc. also he's TMA

- zed FUCKED!!! his designs were all SO COOL!!!! great bad guy. not as cool as the PR zedd but still liked him a lot

- i didnt shout her out last post i made so here she goes: wagon my beloved. probably one of my favourite designs of the season!! the heart shaped helmet visor is such an inspired choice

- one definite downside in the simplicity of the show is it left me with a lot of questions, (unless they're answered in one of the movies): what's the ultimate goal of the shadow line? what's the history of the rainbow line? are they the first toqgers? there's implications of a longer struggle but none of it is explored

- docked points for transmisogyny in the movie studios episode

overall i would personally rank it at 8.5/10. very charming and good introduction to sentai if someone is new to it!!

pros and cons of toq/kyoryu because this movie is having some kind of Effect on me and i need to put all this down somewhere:

pros:

the tonal shift on the toqger end was handled Really Well. These guys are a Fun Sentai and now they're stuck in a Serious Sentai movie. they're out of their depth and they're scared and confused, but they're not going to give up, even if everyone else is telling them to go home.

the setup for the toq endgame. there's a lot of stuff here that you realize was foreshadowing, or if nothing else is viewed in a different context. twinkle twinkle little star is never the same after watching this series. this movie takes place just before the final few stations and it's not much of a stretch to say the events that take place here are what lead to Right making the decisions he did in the finale.

the toqgers being caught in the kyoryuger's rolecall blast and getting knocked over by it got a chuckle out of me. i do enjoy whenever sentai series acknowledges the explosion as being an Actual Thing and not just for cool points / emphasis. plus, you know. since there was no opening theme song, this takes the place of them tripping and falling like they do in the main series OP.

cons:

daigo is just. really mean to the toqgers for a good chunk of the movie. and granted he has his moments in the series itself too but this is supposed to take place post kyoryu's finale and he spends a lot of the time being needlessly condescending to right and the others. granted some of it is because of [spoilers] but come on man. they saved your ass like twice. the least you could do is take them seriously. even during the actual boss fight he gets a few digs in at right that just feel like he's being a know-it-all jackass towards the newbies.

the other kyoryugers minus utchy don't really get much time to shine out of suit. a lot of this movie was mostly akira/utchy and daigo/right, and even then utchy spends a chunk of the first half as a literal baby, which also pulls akira out of combat because someone's gotta protect him. in suit, they're mostly paired up with their respective colors, with ian and mio being grouped together because the kyoryu's don't have a yellow, and the toq's don't have a black. their character dynamics aren't really explored because, again, daigo immediately comes along and kicks the toq's out to handle the situation himself, until it gets to the point where he literally can't.

ian's comment about not wanting to hit on mio and kagura after they're turned into kids by clock shadow. i'm glad you have standards my guy but this really isn't the time.

WMG bonus:

daigo thinks about what right said about protecting even the little things on earth. and then immediately looks over at a recovering amy. since this takes place at some point post kyoryuger, and we know that at some point between this and the events of kyoryu/kings, amy has prince. there's a nonzero chance that she's already pregnant here, and he knows that. or if nothing else, they've been trying for a baby already. rip to yayoi if they hooked up this early tho. poor girl never had a chance.

overall tho, i do think it's really good. as someone who enjoyed both toq and kyoryu, i feel like it was a good movie!! i had a lot of fun with it, and most of my gripes are just me taking it too seriously for being, you know. the marketable crossover movie. the ninninnger cameo was also fun, and i did enjoy their brief battle with the miniaturized kuliner.

The Kiramagers and ToQgers were in CARAT where Sayo was checking up on her teammates and her senpais for injuries.

"Gritta wasn't really our enemy," Mio shook her head. "She was just a victim of circumstance who happened to be born into the Shadow Line."

"Gritta was just someone who did things out of love." Kagura giggled.

"Out of love?" Sena couldn't help but ask.

Mio and Kagura took turns telling Gritta's story to everyone.

"Oh, Juru! It has been a long time!" Right greeted.

Juru racked his brain as to where he met the ToQgers' Red. That was when it clicked to him that the trains were the same ones he saw as a kid, he had even remarked it during the fight, the revelation that the ToQgers were given adult bodies, and finally the conversation they had years ago.

"Right?"

"I'm surprised you remember me!" Right grinned.

"Well, it does help that ToQ 4gou is my cousin." Juru grinned.

"Eeeeh? Hikari? Juru's your cousin?!" Right turned to his teammate.

"I'm guessing you met Juru in one of the towns?" Hikari smirked.

"He was admiring our trains." Right grinned. "He even dubbed them the 'rainbow trains'."

"Great guess considering the trains are from the rainbow line." Mio nodded.

"Still, who would have thought that we'd have relatives as part of Super Sentai." Takamichi mused.

"I mean there have been more than one sentai group wherein the full team consisted of family members," Tokacchi offered. "Although this is the first time where relatives are members of two different sentai teams."

"Right, Gai-san mentioned that one time." Kagura nodded.

"Gai-san?"

"Gokai Silver of the Gokaigers," Hikari supplied. "Sometime in the future, he's going to ask you to lend him your powers."

"He's a huge Super Sentai fan." Right grinned.

"Lend them their powers?" Mabushina asked in concern.

"They have the ability to turn into other rangers," Mio explained. "While they are in possession of our ranger keys, we won't be able to change."

"In exchange, they have access to all of our abilities and weapons." Tokacchi supplied.

"So, you did believe yourself to be a superhero, Juru?" Right grinned as he approached his fellow Red, remembering the conversation he had with the boy years ago.

"I did believe, and now I am." Juru mirrored his fellow red's expression.

"Even then, I could see it." Right grinned.

"I would like one request?" Tametomo spoke up. "Can you please leave the Yodom army to us?" He pleaded. "I don't think I can take seeing my younger cousin battling villains like the Yodom army."

The ToQgers looked at each other.

"You're going to have to get used to it, Tame-nii." Kagura offered.

"So I can't stop you, any of you?"

The ToQgers merely shook their head.

"But if it's any consolation, we won't interfere if the enemies aren't Shadow Line related." Mio offered.

"I guess that's the best we could ask for." Tametomo sighed.

Probably not, no. It’s just a limitation of them not being the actual ToQgers. I honestly doubt that they have full access to any side abilities that other Sentai have. For example, you’re probably not gonna see them using Mojikara when using the Shinkenger keys.

And there’s not really much point in them transforming into “this color of this ToQger” when they can use all the keys freely anyway.

It’s weird because a surprisingly large percentage of LOST fans agree that there are Vibes when it comes to John and Ben, but relatively few fans actively ship them or make content for them. I’d say it’s because they’re older, but lbr, Ben’s got a Snape-esque fandom and I think the true roadblock may be that John is Bald* and Emotionally Odd, but frankly that’s critical to my enjoyment.

But there is/was an extant Ben/Locke fanbase, with its own LJ communities and webrings and whatnot, so if we’re going truly rare, I’m going to say Miles/Richard. They share approximately .5 seconds of screentime together, so I get why it’s rare, but I feel like they really bonded while trying to blow things up, there’s that cute lil scene where Miles points out Richard’s first gray hair, and I think they’re going to make a life together on the mainland and Miles is going to be a Ghostbuster who made his fortune in diamonds and has a hot ex-immortal Spanish boyfriend, thus making him the Only Cool Character On Lost.

* but like a total smokeshow? TOQ is a hot old dude and I think it’s time we all admitted it.

🌘: least favorite character

I already complained about Widmore, so I’m just going to reinterpret this question as “least favorite character I’m supposed to like”.

I for real hate Charlie. This was surprising to me when I rewatched the show this year (I had fond memories of the character and I like Dominic Monaghan), but I just can’t stand him. I think what it ultimately comes down to is that the writers and I disagree on what makes Charlie unlikable, and they keep fixing stuff that’s tragic about him while not fixing stuff that’s shitty about him.

I think the writers of Lost believe that Charlie’s primary character flaw is that he’s an addict, and that if he can overcome his addiction, he can become a better person. Whereas I view Charlie’s addiction as a health problem he struggles with in addition to his primary character flaw, which is that he’s a prying, entitled, judgmental goblin. I hate the way he inserts himself into Claire’s life, I hate the way he judges her parenting, I hate the way he just kinda declares himself Claire’s husband without any input from her. I hate the way he gets all creepy and jealous when Locke helps out with Aaron. I hate everything he does during Fire+Water and The Long Con. I hate the way he repeatedly takes the wonderful, precious gift that is Hurley’s friendship for granted. Yes, his death was tragic and heroic. No, it does not stop Charlie from pressing every Toxic Guy In Your Friend Group panic button I have.

🌤: when i first watched

I started around 2008. Jeremy Davies had just joined the cast and I was a big ol’ fan, so I thought it was about time I figured out what this Lost show was all about. I would go on to be ambivalent to Daniel (Danbivalent), but by then it didn’t matter: I fell deeply in love with the show as a whole.

Ikari Gai (and other Gokaigers) meeting some of his kouhai, V or Z?

V is for vibrant

Ahim is pursing her lips in disapproval, and when Gai finally asks her what’s wrong, she nods slowly and then says, “These children seem very young to be Super Sentai.”

Gai wants to argue, but--he can’t, quite. The ToQgers are children. They’re splitting a package of strawberry Pocky and talking about their homework. One of them is playing with a kendama. “I mean, you’re right, they’re very young. It’s not unknown, though. Kou, Kiba Ranger of the Dairangers, he started as a Sentai when he was nine.”

“Gai, this is not reassuring. And who is that man there? Is he their babysitter?”

“I think he’s their sixth, I haven’t actually had the chance to meet them properly yet.”

At this point, of course, one of the children, the one with the kendama, says, very audibly, “You guys noticed that we’re being watched, right?” and as one, they all turn to look up at the ridge on which Ahim and Gai are sitting.

The boy in the red jacket waves enthusiastically. “Hi! Why are you watching us?”

Ahim makes another disapproving noise, but Gai waves back. “We’re the Gokaigers! We’re here to meet you! Conductor told you we were coming, right?”

“Oh, yeah! You’re the pirate guys! King told us about you!”

Once Gai and Ahim have made their way down from the ridge there’s a round of introductions. Ahim continues to look concerned and disapproving, but visibly softens at each enthusiastic greeting she receives, until by the time she gets to the last child, Kagura, she’s actually smiling. “You must be your team’s Pink,” she says, shaking the little girl’s hand. “You have exactly that sort of look.”

Kagura beams at her and strikes a pose. “ToQ Gogou! At your service!”

Ahim nods slowly, the frown coming back. “You’re numbered? You don’t go by color?”

“Oh, no! It’d be too confusing.”

“It would be--how in the world would it be confusing?”

Gai, meanwhile, has descended on the one adult of the group, who looks mildly alarmed by the grin on his face. “You must be ToQ Rokugou, then! I’m Ikari Gai! Gokai Silver!”

The man eyes him uncertainly and then says, “Akira,” visibly confused as he shakes hands. “Conductor said you needed our help?”

“Well, yes, we’re dealing with an alien invasion force that has psychic powers, the Cognitons, and according to the research I’ve done, your team’s imagination-based combat should be just the thing to counter them.”

Akira makes a non-committal noise. “If you say so. The kids will definitely be excited, I just go where they go. Otherwise they might get into trouble. They’re not adults anymore, you know.”

Gai blinks. “I...I see.”

The children are, reasonably, incredibly excited when the Galleon shows up to pick them up, and the short trip to the incipient battlefield is spent in an absolute riot of talking and games as the other Gokaigers get to meet their third-generation juniors. Doc in particular immediately bonds with the anxious boy with glasses, Tokacchi, and spend fifteen minutes talking about the maintenance the Galleon requires while Tokacchi takes furious notes.

Joe meets them when they anchor and says, shortly, “The Cogniton commander is very interested in our so-called secret weapon, Gai, these kids had better be worth it.”

“I have full faith in them!” Gai beams at him as nearby the five children scramble to get their changers out of their backpacks. “I think they’re exactly the help we need today.”

And the thing is, they are. The Cognitons are suitably bowled over by the overwhelming imaginative might of the ToQgers, their psychic powers no match for the sheer mental energy of children furiously making things up as they go along. The first few ranks of enemies fall in moments.

Then, though, something very strange happens.

ToQ Sangou, Mio, bounds across the field to Tokacchi, something switches hands between them, and--she changes.

She turns into a Blue. And Tokacchi turns into a Yellow.

Back-to-back with Gai, Ahim makes an alarmed noise and shouts, “Did they just swap colors?”

“They did.” Gai only has a moment to gape before he has to duck a blast from a Cogniton soldier. “Actually, that seems like a really interesting way of doing things. Tokacchi’s very good with that hammer, isn’t he?”

“That’s unheard of!”

“I mean, you want to talk about unheard of, Rokugou over there is an Orange!”

The ToQgers continue to swap colors as they fight, a dizzying rainbow whirl as they bounce back and forth across the battlefield. When Right goes from Red to Pink, Ahim actually lets out a tiny shriek of outrage. “That little boy does not have the character to be a Pink!”

“I mean, he seems like he’s doing fine.”

“That’s not what I mean, Gai, he doesn’t seem like the emotional support of his team at all! There is a legacy to uphold!”

"All of us have turned into Pinks before, that never bothered you."

"Well, of course, but you didn't turn into me! You changed into other Pinks. He became his own team's Pink, and I’m sure he’s far too reckless for the position."

"It was only for a minute, though."

He can practically see her worried expression through her helmet. "Still!"

By the time the battle’s over Ahim’s calmed down, softening again as she watches the young ToQgers de-transform and immediately lapse into excited chatter about everything they did, and how cool the Gokaigers were. Nearby, Gai corners Akira and says, “You’re an Orange! Why didn’t you mention?”

Akira blinks at him. “Of course I wear orange, I do railway maintenance.”

“I don’t think you understand, there hasn’t been an Orange sentai in decades. Not since Battle Cossack in 1979. This is extraordinary. Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?”

A slow nod. “If you want to, I guess.”

Before long, though, the children have to be dropped off, and shortly after they’ve left Akira bids Gai a slightly friendlier goodbye and wanders away into the sunset, playing harmonica. Gai, watching him go from the Galleon, sighs and says to Ahim, “You know, it’s really hitting me seeing them, I think we were the end of an era.”

Ahim nods. “Sentai these days do seem to be much more complicated.” A pause. “I still don’t think that boy Right has the right temperament to be a Pink of the usual sort, but perhaps these children function differently. And Kagura is very sweet, I approve of her completely.”

“All the teams nowadays function differently. The Go-Busters are pretty strange, you remember, and the Kyouryugers have all those extra members, and now these kids have an Orange and they trade...” Gai sighs, but happily. “It’s exciting, you know? I’ve been thinking I should make a serious study of how Super Sentai have changed over the years. Maybe I’ll write a book about it.”

oh boy, i could go on about this all day. which i will. hope you don’t mind that they’ll mostly be guys, as tokusatsu in general tends to be a sausagefest. i’ll try to avoid spoilers for the aforementioned non-toku devotees.

he came from 50 years in the future to give a high school boy a magic belt that would enable him to become an evil king with ultimate dominion over space-time

catchphrase: “REJOICE!” followed by super hammed up dramatic speeches whenever said high school boy gains a cool new power

he basically worships this high school boy and tries to encourage him to become the despot who shaped the dystopian hellscape woz came from

he’s normally taciturn but gets super cheerful and giggly in the presence of cute baby animals, especially kittens

he loves public baths so much he uses the word “aishiteru”

he often makes his dramatic entrance while playing a mournful tune on his harmonica

he’s got a lot of internal conflict going on but he’s such a good guy

his monster form has the softest fluffiest ears and a bitchin cowboy outfit

transforms into both the silver lupin X AND the golden patren X

catchphrase is “oh la la!” which he says when surprised/excited/intrigued

he’s both a phantom thief and an elite international police officer. it just works…somehow.

uses his mecha train to travel between japan and france in no time flat

older than he looks

does unnecessary acrobatic stunts for the hell of it (which his actor, seiya motoki, really does!)

wants the phantom thieves and police officers to be friends and work together instead of fighting

lowkey shipper on deck

is he japanese? is he french? well that is just his own sweet and sexy secret

owns a shiny silver and gold kimono equally as awesome as akira’s in the gif above

tsukasa kadoya from kamen rider decade

he’s kamen rider decade

catchphrase is “i’m just a kamen rider passing through…remember that!”

his show is so weird and confusing but that’s okay because he’s cute and has an adorably bad attitude

always trying to take photos with the camera he carries. they always turn out looking shitty. he says it’s because the world is rejecting him, and not because he’s shitty at taking photos.

so he’s supposed to hop universes destroying worlds but he seems to just keep saving them instead

said worlds are extremely strange AUs of the first nine heisei kamen rider shows

anyway, back to tsukasa. he has a weird and sexy way of sitting which he did in front of black woz once which made him start doing it

actually his interactions with black woz in zi-o are memorably hilarious for both characters

every time tsukasa enters a new world, he automatically has a job that helps him fit in. in the kiva world, he’s a concert violinist–and boy, can he play. in the blade world, he’s the head chef of a cafeteria, and comes up with some great (if a little underhanded) methods of making money.

what the fuck is he even doing?

will i have the answer to that by the time i finish watching decade or nah?

regardless, he’s incredibly charming, and pleasant to watch

umika is secretly the super cute phantom thief lupin yellow!

she’s super cute and acts cheery but she’s got some intense sadness going on deep down which remains a secret to most people

i started watching lupat because she’s cute, even though i did not think i’d really get into super sentai

fellow lupinranger and bistro staff kairi pinches her nose just like how his older brother used to pinch his nose

…when umika turns it around and pinches kairi’s nose…when that happens you will want to cry, just sayin

one of the patrangers gets a big dumb crush on her, unaware that she’s actually a lupinranger (can you blame him?)

in the tradition of shinji kido he is cute, dumb, sweet, and bleaches his hair

can you believe this widdle bitty cutie pie grows up to become a megalomaniacal overlord subjecting humanity to a dark timeline of misery and woe??

at least, he might. he’d rather not. the time travelers from 2068 inform him that it’s a definite possibility.

has been convinced since childhood that he will become a king after graduating high school, and because of that, he has no other career aspirations and no friends…wah wah waaaaaaaah

even when anxious and easily discouraged, tokatti is always brave and strong for his friends when in a pinch

thinks of his big brother ryo as a cool superhero

Quick Review of Super Sentai Shows

I haven't seen a lot of Toku shows, but I've always wanted to get me thoughts out on them. I've seen every Sentai show starting from Gokaiger and after. Even though that's not a lot, these are still gonna be kind of long, so I'll tackle Kamen Rider shows at a later date. Each of these 'reviews' will be a paragraph or two in length, a quick few sentences on each Ranger, and will have a letter grade after it. Maybe someday, I'll go into greater detail, but just not today. Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger: My opinion on Gokaiger might be a little bias, but this is my favorite series. Gokaiger follows the adventures of a band of pirates as they look for a treasure that can only be found on Earth. Meanwhile, the Earth is being invaded by a Space Empire that has, in one way or the other, screwed them all over. This draws them into the battle as they fight to protect the Earth in order to protect the treasure, slowly growing to like the Earth as we get cameos and guest stars of previous Rangers-I might not be familiar with much of them since I've hardly seen much of the older shows, but I do love the crash course on Sentai Teams. The main gimmick of the show is the ranger's ability to transform into the rangers of previous shows, but when in their main suits, Blue and Green trade their gun and sword respectively to duel wield, Yellow and Pink also pull this. Gokai Red, Captain Marvelous: The fact that might just be his real name is hilarious. Probably, in my biased opinion, the most badass pirate n fictional history and best ranger so far. Gokai Blue, Blue: Cool guy and his personal arc is awesome. Also, there's an episode when he SOMEHOW holds five swords. Suck it, Zoro. Gokai Yellow, Luka: Wannabe Nami from One Piece, but she's still pretty cool. Gokai Green, Doc: Team smart guy and is probably the funniest character. He trips and falls around in the fights and although his own arcs are pretty petty, he's still enjoyable. Gokai Pink, Ahim: A Princess who's both Team Heart and team badass. Thankfully no 'princess laugh' Gokai Silver, Guy: 6th Ranger and a literal Super Sentai fanboy, complete with an autograph book and it's really funny. Gets his own powerup form that's kind of lame, but his gimmick is to transform into other 6th Rangers. Grade: A+ Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters: FBI agents fight Hackers. Okay, no, not quite that: a science institute is dragged into Cyberspace-I mean Hyperspace, with the only ones able to escape being 3 kids. These 3 kids grow up to become the Go-Busters. This is a super serious series-well, as series as these shows can get-and it's everything I could've asked for. Unfortunately, that was also kind of the problem. Anyway, they fight machines that have been infected with a virus by a homicidal computer avatar-even though a lot of these robots are made from machines that aren't electronic in nature. Go-Busters gave the feeling that there was a lot of good ideas going into this, but they weren't taken far enough. Each of the 3 main Go-Busters get a robot partner that is both a helpful side character AND helps them pilot their respective mech. Each of the Go-Busters also has a superpower due to being absorbed into Hyperspace, and a computer-based weakness. Red Buster, Hiromu: The most skilled member of the group, as well as the most socially inept. His super power is to run at super speed, and his weakness is to freeze up...but only when he sees or hears a 'chicken'. His partner, Cheeda Nick, is a humanoid robot that turns into a motorcycle and acts as Hiomu's older brother. Yellow Buster, Yoko: A hotheaded tomboy. Her special power is super-high jumping, and weakness is needing to keep the calories coming-AKA, needing her battery charged. Her partner, Usada Lettuce, is a rabbit-themed robot that part times act as a best friend and part time a nagging parent. Blue Buster, Ryuji: The oldest of the group and the one who has to keep Hiromu and Yoko from pulling each other's hair out. His super power is super strength, but his weakness is overexerting himself-overheating. In which case, he goes berserk and could destroy himself. His partner, Gorisaki Banana, is a gorilla-themed robot that is a doting, overbearing parent 24/7. Beet Buster, Jin: A super genius who was trapped in Hyperspace. He appears as a digital avatar that's remote-controlled by the real Jin who's still trapped. He really lived up this dry show by being funny and he even has a good arc. Unlike the previous 3, his mechs can be piloted without his robot partner. Stag Buster, Beet J. Stag: A humanoid robot that acts as Jin's partner. Unlike the other robots, he actively joins in the fight and is also funny. He constantly steps in front of people and interrupt them while talking. When transforming, it looks like excess parts from him form into Jin's suit, but this could just be cosmetic. Grade: C- Zyuden Sentai Kyoryuger: According to this show, during the age of dinosaurs, Aliens invaded and tried to take over the Earth, but the Dinosaurs beat them. To get revenge, they caused the ice age. But team mentor, Torin, stored their souls so they could be used again to fight the aliens-as oppose to using them for the other aliens who've surely came from other shows.  Anyway, cut to modern times when the aliens come back and the souls of the dinosaurs must find new wielders of their power to defend the planet. This is the typical goofy nature you should expect from these shows. Each Ranger uses a gun to transform, to fight, and get their own special weapon. Also, a bunch of smaller dinosaur batteries that can turn into upgrades and other tools. Kyoryu Red, 'King': Or Daigo, but almost everyone calls him King. The Fanged Hero who's a hotheaded shonen protagonist-get use to me saying that. His dinosaur is a Tyrannosaurus-because of course it is. If you've seen the last 3 Dinosaur-themed heroes, you should've known. Kyoryu Blue, Nobuharu: Or Nossan. The Armored Hero is literally the best character in this show. He tells bad puns and is a middle aged handyman who helps take care of his niece with his sister. His spirit is a Stegosaurus. Kyoryu Green, Souji: The Slashing Hero, a high school student who studies swordplay from his father, who runs a dojo. His dinosaur is a Velociraptor. Kyoryu Pink, Amy: The Horned Heroine, a high-class sophisticate who is always trying to get away from her fortune and be normal.  Her dinosaur is a Triceratops. Kyoryu Black, Ian: The Bullet Hero, European archaeologist-in the same sense of Indiana Jones, just replace the whip with a gun-who's also a playboy. He gets his own arc with one of the main antagonists. His dinosaur is a Parasaurolophus. Kyoryu Gold, Utsusemimaru: Or just Uchii. The Thunderous Hero is a feudal era Samurai who survived due to one of the main antagonist, Dogold(a living set of armor) taking his body. They have a constant rivalry that is pretty awesome to watch. His dinosaur is a Pteranodon. The next couple of rangers are mostly suplimentary. They won't appear as often as the main team, if at all. Kyoryu Cyan, Ramirez: Another person from an unspecified part of Europe. The Steel Hero is a jolly guy who SOMEHOW slims down when he transforms. He's actually a spirit who assists the rangers from beyond the grave. His dinosaur is a Ankylosaurus. Kyoryu Gray, Tessai: A Chinese Martial Artist and another Spirit. A disciplined warrior. His dinosaur is a Pachycephalosaurus. Kyoryu Violet, Dr. Ulshade: The Marine Hero, an old man scientist who originally built the heroes their transforming gun. He retires from hero duty and his granddaughter, Yayoi, takes after him-both as a scientist and as the Marinte Heroine. Their dinosaur is a Plesiosaurus. Kyoryu Silver, Torin: Torin is actually a defector from the invaders and eventually becomes a ranger himself. His dinosaur should be himself since he's a bird, but no, it's a Deinonychus. Grade: B+ Ressha Sentai ToQger: Thomas the Tank Engine. Okay, no. ToQger follows a group of childhood friends as they find themselves on the Rainbow Line, a train powered by children's imagination. With the Rainbow Line in danger by their counterpart, but the Shadow Line, who's goal is to cover the world in darkness, the ToQger uses their imagination to, well, imagine themselves as rangers to fight the Shadow Line. This series is a mix of a comedy and a drama, slowly growing darker and darker into a rather somber show. It's still a how focused on the power of friendship, but it's kind of deep. The Ranger gimmick this time, aside from trains, is that they switch their colors, and weapons, with each other. ToQ 1gou, Right: The energetic leader of the show, another Shonen-ish main Red. The most imaginative and childish of the group. ToQ 2gou, Tokatti: A Blue klutz, but he has a few endearing moments. ToQ 3gou, Mio: A no-nonsense Yellow ranger. ToQ 4gou, Hikari: The real lancer of this series and the Green Ranger. Is equal to Right, but is also his total opposite. ToQ 5gou, Kagura: The least skilled out of the group, but she's the most imaginative. And here, that's a big deal! ToQ 6gou, Akira: A defect of the Shadow Line, who joined the Rainbow Line to 'protect the rainbow'-cause you can't have a rainbow if the world is in darkness. Best ranger of the series. Grade: B Shuriken Sentai Ninninger: Naruto Sentai! No. Ninninger follows the adventures of five Grandchildren of an incredibly powerful ninja, the Hoka-I mean, the Last Ninja. They fight an army of demons-literally-who were sealed away by the Last Ninja himself. They're heralded by his former student, Izayoi, who aims to collect the 'Power of Fear' in order to resurect the Demon Leader. The monsters are created by Sealing Shuriken, which was what was used to seal him away, and infusing it with his demonic magic, transforming inanimate objects into demons-kind of like how a lot of Japanese Demons, 'Yokai', are made up of inanimate objects. Meanwhile, the ninjas are able to use ninjitsu, literal ninja magic, with the use of special shuriken. Ninninger has a lot going on with its story, to the point where it can feel like there's too much going on. The Wild Brilliance-Aka Ninger, Takaharu: Another Shonen-ish protagonist. He's the red ninja. The Rumbling Cloud-Ao Ninger, Yakumo: The blue ranger, team lancer who grew up in England...and apparntly went to Hogwarts since he can cast normal magic with a wand. The Dazzling Stillness-Ki Ninger, Nagi: Yellow Ranger, would rather work at an office then be a ninja. He's...kind of forgetable, honestly. The Flower in the Wind-Shiro Ninger, Fuka: The White Ranger is sister of Takaharu-everyone else, in relationship to the other, are cousins. The least skilled of the group, but she starts getting into her stride later on. The Shimmering Haze-Momo Ninger, Kasumi: The Smart Girl and the Pink Ranger. Is the best Ranger in a technical sense, since she's easily the smartest member of the team in terms of ninjitsu and is an aspiring scientist. The Shinning Star-Star Ninger, Kinji: An American Ninja/Cowboy...who transforms with a little cheeseburger, as oppose to the sword everyone else use. And he fights with a gun/guitar/sword. HE is best Ranger of the series. (He's the 6th Ranger and the only one not related to the main cast). He pursuited being a ninja after being inspired by the Last Ninja. Grade: C Doubutsu Sentai Zyuohger: Power Ranger Furries. No. Well, kind of. In an alternate dimmension, there is a land called Zyuland, home of the Zyumans. In universe, a group of anthropomorphic animal. In reality, a bunch of guys a little too enthusiastic in their cosplay. Our Red Ranger, a Zoologist, while studying animals in a forest, stumbles upon a giant cube, a Link Cube, which transports him to Zyuland. Meanwhile, Earth is attacked by a group of intergalactic aliens, the Dethgalien, who are only invading Earth because it's a literal game for them. In fact, they even have this neat arcade them, with monsters getting an 'extra life' with coins. After four Zyuman end up on Earth after it gets damaged, Yamata and the four of them have to fight to protect the Earth, while also trying to find a way home for the Zyumen. The Zyumen transform using Zyuoh Changers, which are cube cellphones. Monarch of the Skies-Zyuoh Eagle, Yamato: Token Human who prior, was given some Zyuenergy from Bard, an Eagle Zyuman who found Yamato while he was young and got into a serious accident. Thanks to that, Yamato is capable of transforming into the Red Ranger, while also getting Eagle wings. He also gets 2 more transformations. Yamato himself is a little less shonen then the previous two guys, with a strong passion for animals. As an Eagle, he can see great distances. Monarch of the Seas-Zyuoh Shark, Sela: The Blue Ranger and a Shark-Woman. She has super hearing and is serious. Her shark dorsal fin can, apparently, cut people. Monarch of the Savannah-Zyuoh Lion, Leo: This Yellow Ranger picks up the slack for Yamato's lack of shonen conventions. A hot blooded, Lion-Man warrior with a sonic scream...er, roar. Also, Lion Claws. Monarch of the Forest-Zyuoh Elephant, Tusk: This studious young man is the Green Ranger. He's studious and straight forward to a fault. He's an Elephant-Man with a super sense of smell. He can also stomp around with Elephant Feet. Monarch of the Snowfield-Zyuoh Tiger, Amu: The White Ranger, the most easy going of the group. She's a Tiger-Woman and have a super sense of taste. She fights with tiger claws. Monarch of the World, Zyuo The World, Misao: He is the best Ranger, period. Kidnapped by the Dethgalien, he gets forcefully infused with 3 other Zyoumen: a Crocodile, Wolf, and Rhino. What makes him the best is his overall arc as a character, being socially inept and fostering some misplaced guilt on the death of the Zyoumen. Grade: B+ Uchu Sentai Kyuranger: The most recent Sentai Series, following a rebellion group in their attempt to overthrow the evil Jark Matter, an organization that has already taken over the entire universe. The universe's last hope are the prophesied Kyuangers, who transform with the use of Kyutamas-little spheres based off of the constellations that they put into wrist-mounted blasters. By the end of the series, there is a grand total of 12 heroes. Unfortunately, this show REALLY loves caste herds AND is still Red centric, so we won't get much in the way of small groups mix and matching, and more so we'll divide the characters into certain groups or they'll have some kind of chemistry, and they won't interact with other people. (Ex. A and B hand out, A and C hang out, but C and B won't hang out.) To add onto that, the last couple of episodes or so really makes the show drag on, as though the writers struggled to write an ending AND reach the episode quota. But, it does give me a lot of 'favorite rangers', so pros and cons. The Super Star-Shishi Red, Lucky: The shonen protagonist to end the all-at least, as far as I've seen. His whole shtick is that he's lucky and sometimes it comes off as a deus ex machina, and other times it's more of in a symbolic  sense, ala "you make your own luck". His constellation is Leo. The Poison Star-Sasori Orange, Stinger: A mysterious lone wolf from a planet of humanoids with Scorpion tails. Speaking of, his constellation is Scorpius. He has a pretty intricate arc involving his brother, as well as with his partner below. The Ring Star-Oushi Black, Champ: A robot wrestling bull. That alone makes him a canidate for best ranger. He also goes through an arc of his alone, as well as one with Stinger. He's as big of a ham as they come, as he seems fully aware of the show he's in. His constellation is Taurus. The Beast Star-Ookami Blue, Garu: An anthropomorphic Wolf who's constellation is, yes, Lupus, the Wolf. He's another hot head who bonds quickly with Lucky. He might be my favorite ranger purely because of just how endearing he can be, like an actual dog. The Trick Star-Tenbin Gold, Balance: A robot-uh, I mean mechanical lifeform/android who's part of a pair of thieves with the guy below. He can control other pieces of machinery. He is flamboyant as all hell and he's so fun to watch. His constellation is Libra. The Silent Star-Hebitsukai Silver: An emotionless alien who has psychic powers. He follows Balance along in the hopes of achieving emotions, something his species has given up on like the Vulcans from Star Trek. His constellation is Ophiuchus, but he acts less like the Serpent Bearer and more like the Serpent itself. The Shinobi Star-Chameleon Green: A freakin' ninja from a suppose planet of ninjas! She's a sassy tomboy with her constellation is Chamaeleon. The Speed Star-Washi Pink, Raptor 283: A lady robot who was built to helm their speceship, the Orion. She's more or less an otaku, but they do their best to make her come cute and not cringey. Her constellation is Aquila. The Food Mei-Star-Kijika Yellow, Spada. A chef who...I guess comes from Space Spain. His constellation is Dorado. The Dragon Ma-Star-Ryu Commander, Commander Shou: The commander of the Kyurangers and the rebellion. He's eccentric and, although as much of a dork as Raptor, is so cool! His arc is early on in the series and it really shows just how great he is. A definite candidate for best ranger! He's an anthropomorphic dragon, so of course, his constellation would be Draco. The Big Star-Koguma Skyblue, Kotaro: A young Earthling-one of two Earthling Tokens-who joins the resistence and even goes through boot camp! His constellation is Ursa Minor. The reason for being the 'Big Star' is because he has a powerup that lets him grow to a giant size! He ends up looking up to Stinger as an older brother figure. The Space Bu-Star-Houou Soldier, Tsurugi: A Kyuranger who was put into cryogenic sleep. He's a haughty bastard, but considering he was the first president of space, he can kind of get away with it.  You'll either learn to love him or learn to tolerate him since he does get better. His constellation is the Phoenix. Grade: B Kaitou Sentai Lupinranger VS Keisatsu Sentai Patoranger: Cops and Robbers Sentai, the Sentai. Following Kyuranger, the show follows along the 3-way feud between the Lupinrangers, a group of phantom thief-themed sentai, the Patorangers, a group of cop-themed sentai, and the Ganglers, a Mafia-themed batch of villains. The three groups fight over the Lupin Collection, a group of magical McGuffins that were collected by the Phantom Thief Lupin(yes,that one.) The Lupins want them to get a wish. The Pats want them to fight the Ganglers. And the Ganglers want them cause power. The show LOVES the Lupinranger, with the Patoranger getting much less screen time. At the same time, they also get the most character development. Meanwhile, the Lupinranger get the most screen time and the most upgrades and weapons. Lupin Red, Kairi: UNLIKE the last, like, 3 Sentais, Kairi isn't a Shonen Protagonist (OMFG!). He's a confident and suave guy, but it's a front since his wish is to get back his older brother, who was kidnapped by a Gangler-and they weren't on good terms when he was taken. Lupin Blue, Toma: Cool, collected straight guy of the team. His goal is to get back his fiance. Probably the most interesting of the three thieves since his episodes either push him into VERY uncomfortable places for the character, or draws heavily on the memories of said fiance. Lupin Yellow, Umika: Team Little Sister. Her goal is to get back her friend. She has a romantic subplot with Patren 2gou and it's surprisingly interesting. Her episodes are surprisingly rare, at least, to me they felt rare. Patren Ichigou, Keiichiro: Hard boiled, no-nonsense cop. Comes off as an angry cop in the beginning, but is simply trying to uphold justice and protect people. His a rivalry with Lupin Red, but as Keiichiro, becomes a pseudo-older brother to Kairi. Patren Nigo, Sakuya: Bumbling oaf cop. A rookie who wants to prove his worth and struggles with confidence-but when he does get confident, it goes to his head quickly. Is endearing and honest and his episodes revolve around rising to the occasion. Patren Sangou, Tsukasa: Straight man(woman?) cop. Usually the one who has to rein in her other partners. Doesn't get too much attention. Lupin/Patren X, Noel: Double Agent kind of who works with both Lupins and Patrens. Can be kind of obnoxious and feels superfluous to the plot, but is a fun addition to both sides. Grade: A
