Meet Gee’s golden langur (Trachypithecus geei)! It lives high in the treetops in forests along the border between India and Bhutan. It spends its time munching on snacks such as fruits, leaves, seeds, and flowers. The reclusive primate is easily recognizable by the color of its fur, along with its slender limbs; its body can be as long as 29 inches (75 centimeters), not including its tail, which can add another 40 inches (100 centimeters). Since it’s so reliant on trees, this endangered species is particularly threatened by habitat destruction due to deforestation. The Royal Manas National Park in southern Bhutan, which is considered Bhutan's national heritage, was first designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1996 and then as a national park in 1993. In India, the park is bordered on the north by the Black Mountain National Park and on the south by the Manas Tiger Reserve.

Primatologists have observed that the Gee’s golden langur (Trachypithecus geei), endemic to the semi-evergreen and mixed-deciduous forests straddling India and Bhutan, induce stillbirth of babies killed inside the womb of females, besides practising infanticide.

The findings, reported in a new study published in Animal Conservation, highlighted dog attacks on some 80 species, including threatened ones dwindling in numbers, such as the golden langur (Trachypithecus geei), the great Indian bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps) and the green sea turtle (Chelonia mydas). Nearly half of these attacks took place in or around protected areas, the survey found. India is home to about 60 million of the world’s estimated 1 billion dogs. In a bid to understand the impacts of free-ranging dogs on native wildlife in the country, which many experts claim is an “underreported” fact, Chandrima Home of the Bangalore-based Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE) and colleagues zoomed in on dog-wildlife interactions in India through an online survey and scrutinized reports from national print media. “We found it is largely a problem across India, despite the limitations of an online survey,” Home told Mongabay-India. “Dogs were reported to attack nearly 80 species of wildlife and most of the attacks were on mammals, largely ungulates like cattle and small carnivores. In some places, respondents reported multiple attacks. Majority of these attacks were by free-ranging dogs unaccompanied by humans and in packs. I need a hug! Golden langur (Trachypithecus geei) Bhutan These three were part of a good sized group of at least 18 and of all age groups and at least 3 individuals just a few weeks old. I had so much fun watching their natural and very relaxed behaviour, and here I caught this very young one apparently calling out for mum or any adult to come and make whatever was scary go away.
