KUHN: GREENVILLE SNAPS SLUMP WITH BREAKOUT WIN OVER SOLAR BEARS
Swamp Rabbits score four unanswered goals to break tie BY: Jordan Kuhn, Greenville Swamp Rabbits BOXSCORE GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Greenville Swamp Rabbits looked to respond after a loss to the South Carolina Stingrays the night before, and did just that. The Swamp Rabbits put up six goals and notched four unanswered tallies with the game tied at two after one period of play, and beat the Orlando Solar Bears 6-2 on Sunday afternoon at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Three minutes into the second period, on a Michael Pelech dump in, Matt Marcinew darted after the puck in below the goal line, picked it out of the corner, and took a seeing-eye shot from the left circle that evaded the reach of Zach Fucale to give Greenville the lead that stood the test of time. Jacob Pritchard gave the Swamp Rabbits some insurance to work with. Patrick Bajkov and Mason Baptista teamed up to center the puck in front to Pritchard who was lurking at the top of the crease, and his fourth goal of the season made it 4-2 home team. Ryan Black's first pro goal, and Mike Monfredo's first goal as a Swamp Rabbit ended the scoring deluge. The game was knotted at 2-2 through the first 20 minutes of action. The Swamp Rabbits were able to take control of the game with the opening salvo just 2:05 into the action. Adam Rockwood's centering pass found Travis Howe slicing down the wing off the bench and tipped the pass into the goal to open the scoring. Liam Pecararo put on a show with his dazzling shorthanded goal to re-establish a Greenville lead after losing it to a tie. Orlando's power play found a way to respond both times. Michael Brodzinski unleashed a snap shot from the high slot that found a way through a screen. Johno May converted just 18 seconds after Pecararo's goal on a rebound off of Ryan Bednard's pad to tie the game at two. The Swamp Rabbits' defense was the story of the game, allowing just two goals, and 18 shots on goal for the game. Not to mention, denting one of the top defensive teams in the league for six goals. Bednard made 16 saves to pick up the win, his seventh of the season. The Greenville Swamp Rabbits head to the road to take on the Florida Everblades next Friday and Saturday. KUHN: GREENVILLE EARNS WEEKEND SPLIT WITH NORFOLK
Rabbits score three unanswered goals in a big road win BY: Jordan Kuhn, Greenville Swamp Rabbits BOXSCORE NORFOLK, Va. — The Greenville Swamp Rabbits recovered from allowing the first goal with three unanswered tallies and got timely goaltending from Jeremy Helvig in a 3-2 win over the Norfolk Admirals on Saturday night at the Scope. The win split the weekend with the South Division opponent. Johno May notched the game-winning goal at the 4:22 mark of the second period. Michael Pelech stripped the puck at the defensive blue line and started a two-on-one break. May took the pass and wired a shot over former Swamp Rabbits goaltender Brandon Halverson to give the Swamp Rabbits the 3-1 advantage—a lead they would never relinquish. Helvig stood on his head in the final moments, even while fighting off a cramp, with his best save held for last. Brothers Josh and Ben Holmstrom looked to connect on a back-door passing play, but Helvig stretched out the left leg pad to deny the last gasp opportunity for the home club. Down 1-0, it took one opportunity on a breakaway for Liam Pecararo to pull even. Sent on his way on a breakaway by Travis Howe, the team's leading scorer split the defense and shot the puck upstairs. The puck deflected off of Halverson's glove hand and into the net to tie the game about seven minutes into the first period. Kamerin Nault gave the Swamp Rabbits the lead five minutes later. A faceoff win led to a chance from the point by Chad Duchesne. The shot turned into a slingshot pass off the end boards to Nault, whose backhander went upstairs for the go-ahead goal. Alex Rodriguez's goal got the Admirals back within a goal on the power play early in the third period, and even while outshot 19-4, Helvig and the defense continued to block shots and keep Norfolk off the board, even among a night where three-point nights in the standings were commonplace. The win in the standings was also a moral victory for the Swamp Rabbits, who played with just nine forwards and five defensemen, as injury and illness forced the team's hand. The Swamp Rabbits will host three of the next four games at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena starting on Wednesday, December 11 against the I-85 rival Atlanta Gladiators. KUHN: SWAMP RABBITS STUN STINGRAYS ON TUESDAY
Helvig's 48 saves, Bajkov's pair of third period goals lead the way BY: Jordan Kuhn, Greenville Swamp Rabbits BOXSCORE NORTH CHARLESTON, S.C. — With the Greenville Swamp Rabbits under siege in a tie game in the third period, the South Carolina Stingrays appeared to score a decisive, go-ahead goal. That goal was waved off, and the Rabbits pounced. Patrick Bajkov scored twice, including the game-winning goal, and Jeremy Helvig was masterful in net, all of which led to a 5-2 win over the Rays on Tuesday night at the North Charleston Coliseum. The initial potential go-ahead goal for the Rays, after a scramble in the netmouth, was deemed to be kicked in by Max Novak after a lengthy review. Much to the dismay of the stunned Stingrays crowd, the Swamp Rabbits took advantage of the vitriol and turned it into momentum on their side. A power play just minutes later turned into gold for Greenville. Liam Pecararo, in his return to the lineup, notched the primary assist on a drop pass down the right wing to Bajkov, who snapped a shot five hole on Logan Thompson to re-establish the lead for the Swamp Rabbits. With Michael Pelech in the box of a fighting instigator, head coach Kevin Kerr decided to put Bajkov in the box to serve the two minute minor. Jake Horton blocked a shot in the waning moments of the man advantage, and sprung Bajkov on a breakaway, and the triple deke worked to perfection. Horton added an empty netter in the final minute to salt the game away. Helvig upped the ante on his career-high in saves. After making 42 for a career-high mark on Saturday against Indy, he made 48 sensational saves on 50 shots on Tuesday to set a new career high in his pro career. The Swamp Rabbits were outshot 36-12 in the final 40 minutes, and that is where the Ontario native was at his best. The two efforts with the Swamp Rabbits have increased his career save percentage from .917 to .920. Greenville appeared to have the game in hand in the early stages of the second period, due to a 2-0 lead. Pelech and Johno May, reinserted into the lineup, found Travis Howe wide open in the left face-off dot, and while all alone, snapped the shot past Thompson for the opening tally. Adam Larkin added to the lead early in the second period with a goal late in the power play. As Matt Nuttle was stepping out of the penalty box for the Stingrays, Larkin blasted a one-timer from the point to double the lead. South Carolina, however, responded quickly, and turned the game around almost instantly. Andrew Cherniwchan took advantage of a slowly-developing zone entry for South Carolina. Cole Ully zipped a pass across ice, and the veteran's half slapper squeaked through Helvig's pads to cut the lead in half. Three minutes later, after a big hit on Luke Ripley, the Rays took advantage of a Greenville line change. KUHN: (SAT) RABBITS RALLY TO TIE, FALL IN SHOOTOUT
Greenville erases two-goal deficit to earn standings point BY: Jordan Kuhn, Greenville Swamp Rabbits BOXSCORE GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Greenville Swamp Rabbits rallied from down two after the first period to force overtime, but ultimately fell in a five-round shootout to the South Carolina Stingrays. Andrew Cherniwchan scored in the bottom of the fifth to give the Rays the weekend sweep by a 3-2 score on Saturday night at the Bon Secours Wellness Arena. Cherniwchan picked the top corner over the shoulder of Ryan Bednard in the fifth round to close out the shootout. Logan Thompson stopped all five Greenville shooters in the shootout to seal the win. While it took the back half of the game to complete the comeback, the Swamp Rabbits completed the comeback against one of the top defensive teams in the league. Off of a strange carom on a shot by Jonathan Charbonneau, the puck found Mason Baptista behind the defense. Baptista dusted the puck off and buried the puck behind Thompson for the goal to cut the lead in half two and a half minutes into the second period. It was his first in a Greenville uniform. Following an icing is when the Swamp Rabbits completed the comeback effort. Spencer Smallman won a puck battle out of the corner, and ladled a pass cross ice to Chad Duchesne, who snuck in from his point position and fired the puck home to tie the game at two. Adam Larkin added the additional helper. Aside from a first period in which the game got away from Greenville on the whole, Bednard kept the puck out of the net from the 17:13 mark of the first period onward through the final two periods and seven minutes of overtime. He made 30 saves in the shootout loss, including some key breakaway saves. South Carolina struck with two goals in the first period in which they were outshot 11-6. Tom Parisi jumped on a defensive zone turnover and fired a wicked wrister five hole eight and a half minutes into the first period to open the scoring. South Carolina continued its streak of scoring the first goal. Casey Bailey doubled the lead late in the first. With a penalty on the way, the Rays continued a strong shift in the offensive zone. Parisi jumped off the bench, took a pass from Mark Cooper in the high part of the zone, and found leading goal scorer Casey Bailey for his eighth goal of the season. Travis Howe looked to change the momentum with his fight in the first period with Ed Wittchow. His instigator penalty was the only power play that South Carolina had to work wtih. The Swamp Rabbits had a 5-on-3 power play opportunity to work with in the second period, and a late power play chance in the third period, but could not strike on five opportunities throughout the night. The Swamp Rabbits head to the road to take on the Norfolk Admirals at 7:35 p.m. at the Scope. The game can be heard on ESPN Upstate. KUHN: RELIABLE CENTER THOMAS EBBING INKS DEAL
24-year-old forward adds responsible defensive presence BY: Jordan Kuhns, Greenville Swamp Rabbits GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Greenville Swamp Rabbits have brought in another reliable forward to the mix with the signing of forward Thomas Ebbing to a Standard Player Contract for the 2019–20 season. Ebbing played 55 games with Greenville last season after beginning the season in Fort Wayne. Ebbing, who entered the year with significant AHL experience, provided a steady offensive contribution, and a valuable utility role as a reliable option at even strength or on special teams. The Michigan native routinely saw time in all three facets of the game. The AHL took notice of his efforts in Greenville and Fort Wayne once more, as, after the conclusion of the year, he was signed to a Professional Tryout Contract (PTO) by the Laval Rocket, AHL affiliate of the Montréal Canadiens. He had also played significant time with Laval during the 2017–18 season. Overall, the looming third-year pro has 118 games of professional hockey experience between the AHL and ECHL. Ebbing developed as a set-up man and shot-blocking machine in college at Michigan State University. With the Spartans, he led the Big Ten in shot blocks as a freshman with 45, finished with 49 blocks, the most in the conference as a sophomore, and his 59 as a junior were fourth in the entire NCAA. Ebbing spent one year in North America's sole Tier I junior hockey league, the USHL, as a member of the Chicago Steel. His solid year earned him a trip to the USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in Muskegon, and a ranking by NHL Central Scouting for the 2013 NHL Draft. The following players are now under contract for the 2019–20 season: F - Michael Pelech (29) F - Johno May (25) F - Travis Howe (25) F - Kamerin Nault (23) F - Mason Baptista (29) F - Roman Ammirato (26) F - Daniel Perez (25) F - Nathan Perkovich (33) F - Cédric Lacroix (24) F - Zach Franko (26) F - Lincoln Griffin (22) F - Shaquille Merasty (28) F - Ryan Horvat (26) F - Thomas Ebbing (24) D - J.C. Five years of AHL experience joins Swamp Rabbits' attack BY: Jordan Kuhn, Greenville Swamp Rabbits GREENVILLE, S.C. — The Greenville Swamp Rabbits gained experience and flexibility up and down the lineup with the signing of forward Ryan Horvat to a Standard Player Contract for the 2019–20 season. Horvat, who spent the last five seasons exclusively in the American Hockey League, brings leadership qualities and a championship résumé to Greenville. Horvat, 26, spent the last five seasons with a mix of the Manchester Monarchs, Ontario Reign, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, and the Springfield Thunderbirds. Twice he served as the Thunderbirds' alternate captain. Championships are in his DNA. Horvat brings 262 games of professional experience and 189 games of major junior experience to the Swamp Rabbits lineup. In those 262 games at the AHL level, he has scored 18 goals and 57 assists, good for 75 points, and a +5 rating. The Ontario native has been a staple in the community no matter where he has been.
