One of his biggest pranks he committed as a kid was that he tied two rubber cables of 100 yards in length to the back of the Chevrolet in which two Amsterdam magistrates came to visit his father at Maarsbergen. When the judges prepared to leave along the driveway, young Carel almost choked with pleasure as he saw the Chevy's acceleration slowly grind to a complete stop, after which the car suddenly shot back and smacked into the tree he had attached those cables to. Unfortunately, Carel had been uncareful in moving out of his irate father's view, upon which the old man stormed into the house to come out with his hunting rifle. Carel couldn't care less, as he had long since run for cover behind the park's rhododendrons.

The crate of beer they brought was warmly appreciated. But while travelling at speed towards the circuit gates, a French gendarme stepped in their way, instructing them to stop, but he pressed his left foot on top of Wiedenhoff’s right, with the Chrysler narrowly missing the officer.

At the Avus sportscar race, he clipped the top of the banked Nordkurve, his Porsche tumbling down into the trees at the back of the banking. Miraculously, the car performed a cat-with-nine-lives trick by falling on its feet unscathed. As if nothing had happened. Carel then went on to rejoin the race at the bottom of the banking. The race officials needed some time to convince themselves it was not Beaufort's ghost doing the honours before they pulled out the black flag to disqualify the battered Porsche…The next day, he had his picture taken at the scene of the event, Carel in his overalls, putting on a brave pose. The photoshoot distinctly lacked taste, as Jean Behra had been killed at the very spot, in the very same race

At another Belgian GP a couple of years later, he took an F2 Cooper onto the track to test it, simply driving it onto the circuit. Eventually the organisers noted from their entry list that the car’s number wasn’t on it and he was black-flagged.

During the French GP at Reims, when official practice had finished, it was noted that he and his orange Porsche were missing. Fearing an accident, the race organisers sent out a search team but discovered he had stopped at a distant part of the circuit to pick up an attractive female spectator, to give her a ride around the track.

At the Nürburgring 1000 km in 1956, Carel de Beaufort and Thieu Hezemans entered the Spyder but found the car had a leaking fuel tank. When I get lucky it's even prepared better than one of the factory cars. Yes, that happens sometimes! At Zandvoort I beat Bonnier, and he's a factory Porsche driver. The thing is, works cars are prepared in advance and the mechanics do not have any meaningful contact with the drivers anymore. They just fly in to the track, to Zandvoort, or Monza, or the Nürburgring, and never visit the factory. My way is different from theirs. I go to the factory and tell them exactly what I want. On my return from a race I'll tell them all my stories and show the guys my time sheets and the photographs I took. In the evenings, I'll take them out to dinner. And in case they need to work late, I'll buy them a crate of beer and bring along a pile of food. And that's just huge, that's fantastic. Essentially it's the reason why I've been going great this season in that old car of mine. Mind you, it's three years old now and still I've beaten the factory cars on many occasions. I believe my profound personal contact with the guys at the Porsche factory is the key to that. I am very happy to be a privateer. You get much more satisfaction out of racing by beating the works drivers. It's no fun flying from Grand Prix to Grand Prix, jump into the car, do your thing and fly off again."

I like how framing indicates (to me) how homeless people are literally left out in the cold and the barrier created between them and the rest of society. Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I've seen just enough interesting framing shots over the past few episodes especially that I can't rule out there being symbolism.

Reverend Anderson does mention the high rate of mental illness among homeless people, although it's still unclear to me if Maureen had a preexisting mental illness or if her trauma and sudden superpowers just didn't mix well. As Static leaves the building, he grouses about his father 'slaughtering' him if he doesn't attend given how Richie previously signed him up for a tree lighting ceremony. This leads into a bit of dark humor in a nod to Jesus having a similar day. Note: I'm pretty sure that Static is just doing teenage dramatics about Robert's reaction, based off of all the previous episodes. There's also the fact that it's clearly indicated which event Static would prefer to be at. Hint: it's not the one his 'publicist' did, which is now hitting me as a probable callback to the events of "Static Shaq".

Static is bored at the tree lighting ceremony and wants to wrap it up quickly, but then Maureen deliberately attacks Static because she wants her photo back. The battle doesn't go well for Static until he uses her actual name although she remains distraught about feeling uncared by anyone. Static opens up about having lost his mother as well; I wish there'd been a little more emphasis on her absence from the holidays, although it is likely by this point the Hawkins family has adjusted their family traditions to her absence.

He gives back the photo. Maureen vents to Static about feeling invisible to all those happy families to his guilt. She thought getting powers would help but she feels "more alone than ever" instead. He ends up hugging her as snow starts to fall again.

It is unclear how and when Maureen regained her original appearance, which again: if she was not-so-figuratively borderline frozen as she uses her powers, that might also be a factor in her behavior and mentality. It is unclear if her hair being paler than as a kid is puberty-related (not unheard of) or if even now her powers have a much milder effect on her appearance.

I'm hopeful that the reverend and his associates will actually be able to help Maureen create a support network. In the real world, yes I know that religion-affiliated organizations don't have the best track record, especially in helping homeless people, but in a kids' superhero cartoon I can be more idealistic without needing the specifics spelled out. The important specific of Maureen retaining control over her choices is stated and Reverend Anderson outright admitting he can't know for sure is oddly reassuring as if he knows there's the possibility of failure then he (and likely others) will be on alert for warning signs rather than assuming all will be well now.

The final scene starts with a large crowd attending Reverend Anderson's interfaith service (including the Hawkins family, the Foley family, the Goren family, and the Watkins family). It stresses how aiding your community should be taken seriously as a responsibility regardless of which faith a person has. There are snippets showing those people at the depot and how others have gone to the dinner, including the woman with two kids who showed Static where Permafrost/Maureen lived. Virgil is teary as he understands the importance of the holidays; he and Richie exchange season greetings.

This episode did a good job balancing action, humor, and discussion of serious topics, especially given its age.

If servers take up so much space, then does the warehouse they’re in just have to be Big Enough or can you wire servers together over multiple floors with long enough cables? Does this impact processing time? With huge server systems like Google, do they even HAVE an access point or a central node or is it just one, MASSIVE conglomeration of processing power?? OK! This one is really interesting because it's the reason why I don't believe that the Circus is abandoned. I mean that in the way that if TADC is following any kind of realistic standards, then the physical hardware behind the circus can't be just tucked away in an abandoned building somewhere. The demands for power and cooling are high. Even if we assume that automated systems take care of that, hardware WILL fail over years of operation.

Have you ever seen Google go down? Maybe Youtube? In the past when they were a small website, sure, but not anymore. If you can make a connection, then you will be able to reach those servers. I assume that the circus has a similar setup, as No matter what, there is a digital space for the humans to occupy. That means that there is ZERO downtime.

But these devises live in the real world, connected to the very real power grid. How can they be powered 24/7? A bad storm hits the area and a tree takes out the power lines, do all of the websites hosted on those servers have to wait the hours, possibly days for that line to be fixed? Nope! These centers advertise 24/7 service and they mean it. What this means is that typically, they will have ON SITE generators that can run the ENTIRE center at a moments notice. Some even have an extra generator on standby in case one of the generators malfunction. Redundancy is the name of the game. If something is essential to function, then there WILL be an exact copy on site as a backup. That is why these big websites never go down for service, there is ALWAYS something available to connect to.

But what most people don't realize is the water requirements. Have you ever seen the statistic that chatGPT consumes like 2-3 THOUSAND liters of water every day? And thought, why the fuck does a computer need water? Isn’t water a bad thing for computers? But water has a very useful ability in the way that it handles heat. It’s the same way how your sweat evaporating cools you off. Think of cooling as just removing the heat instead of actually making cold. So water is used in the cooling of these data centers, which is to say, water is used as the refrigerant. It’s a similar concept to how your fridge works, except the refrigerant is lost over time. The water is allowed to evaporate and leave the building because it makes for more efficient cooling. Here’s a video that goes more into detail about water loss cooling for data centers specifically.

As for the actual building, data centers with multiple floors do exist! The reason one may be a single story has more to do with the cost of land vs the cost to build a building with multiple floors that can support the weight of all of those machines. If land cost more than the steel and concrete needed for multiple floors, then. yes, the shorter the cable the more efficient the data transfer, but the time loss is so short that it’s pretty much unnoticeable to the human eye. Some places also standardize their wire lengths, so every server gets the same load time regardless of the actual placement of the server.

But the people who care about that are insane stock traders (not gamers believe it or not) and advancements have made it so that time delay only starts to matter when a cable reaches miles long in length. And those advancements are Fiber Optics! Fiber being literal fibers (either glass or plastic) and Optics as in lenses or reflection. This is because fiber optic cables carry light instead of electricity. Because light is fast as fuck. So then where does the delay come from? Turns out even with the most reflective, chemically perfect fibers, light scatters and eventually data is lost. So repeaters are put in to repeat the input signal, refreshing it. But these repeaters aren’t perfect, so lag is eventually introduced, so modern fiber optics use amplifiers. Amplifiers strengthen the original signal instead of repeating it, making for faster transfers of days.

But you want to know about how these things are wired in terms of electricity! How these things can fit so much electricity in one building? The answer is industrial grade wiring! It's different from the power cables that you find in your house. Well, the wires themselves may be the same, the difference comes in at the fuse box. Here’s a lady plugging all of the wires in a house into the fuse box. The box itself is then plugged into the power line, which provides the electricity. Multiple lines or higher gauge lines will be ran from the power plant to the data center. The exact set up depends on where the data center is in relation to the power plant, who’s building it, and state laws.

Also, for industrial wiring, they usually run the wires through metal pipes instead of letting the wires sit against the insulation. Here’s a guy who wired his house like this. He doesn’t go into detail about what everything means but you don’t need to know all of that to appreciate the pipe work. Servers don't have a central node, their operation and purpose is different from computer clusters. While each unit is wired together in a cabinet, each unit operates as it's own individual machine. So, a computer cluster will be spreading one load over multiple machines, a server takes many small loads (<- terrible oversimplification but it works). Everything around it exists to route the right requests to it, power it, cool it, and monitor its operation. But they do have access points! As in, you can connect to it directly or use SSH shell to remotely connect to it. SSH shell is just a secure way to connect to the server, as a maintenance level of access is usually not something that you want anyone to be able to pick up on.

Last but not least, YES! There are many different kinds of cables made for different tasks! Or just to be cheap. The more you get into engineering the more you realize half the shit that we do is because it's the cheapest option that still meets requirements! I left some interesting videos in the bottom of this if you are really curious, but I honestly think that figuring out the exact wires is getting a little too into the weeds for this.

So, to summarize, data centers need generators, water for cooling, and have spare copies of pretty much everything. That’s why it’s so god damn rare to see big websites like google docs down but Ao3 goes down every now and then. He's a bunch of helpful videos that I uses when writing this.
