Why Hiring Professional Tree Trimmers in Massachusetts is a Smart Choice for Your Property?

When it comes to maintaining the health and appearance of your property, tree care should never be overlooked. Whether you’re dealing with overgrown branches, diseased trees, or trees that need pruning for aesthetic purposes, hiring professional tree trimmers can ensure the job is done correctly and safely. For homeowners in Massachusetts, finding reliable tree service Massachusetts providers who offer affordable tree removal services is essential to preserving the beauty and safety of your landscape.
The Importance of Professional Tree Trimmers
While you may be tempted to trim or remove trees yourself to save money, tree care is a specialized field that requires knowledge, experience, and the right equipment. Hiring professional tree trimmers ensures that your trees are cared for in a way that promotes their health, safety, and longevity. Here’s why professional tree trimming is the way to go:
Expert Knowledge and Skill Professional tree trimmers are trained in arboriculture, which means they understand the complexities of tree growth, disease, and pest control. They know how to identify potential issues such as weak limbs, diseases, or overgrowth that could harm your tree in the long run. Rather than simply trimming branches, professional tree trimmers will assess the overall health of the tree and recommend the most effective course of action to enhance its well-being.
Safety First Tree trimming can be dangerous, especially when dealing with large trees or branches that are close to power lines, buildings, or fences. Tree service Massachusetts companies come equipped with the proper tools, safety gear, and training to handle these tasks safely. Climbing trees, using chainsaws, or operating large machinery can be hazardous for an untrained person, but professionals are equipped to mitigate these risks and ensure a safe process for both the trees and your property.
Proper Techniques Trimming a tree requires more than just cutting off a few branches. There is a technique involved in shaping trees and maintaining their health. Professional tree trimmers understand how to make precise cuts that encourage healthy growth. Improper trimming can lead to tree stress, poor regrowth, or even death. With professional tree service, you can be sure the job is done right the first time.
Time and Convenience Tree trimming and removal can be time-consuming, especially if you lack the right equipment or experience. Hiring professional tree trimmers means you don’t have to take time out of your busy schedule to deal with the task. Professionals will complete the job in a fraction of the time it would take an amateur and will handle all aspects of the process, including clean-up.
Affordable Tree Removal Services in Massachusetts
Sometimes, tree removal is necessary due to safety concerns, disease, or aesthetic preferences. If you have a tree that is damaged, diseased, or obstructing the view or structure of your home, removing it may be the best option. However, affordable tree removal in Massachusetts can sometimes be a concern for homeowners looking to stick to a budget. Fortunately, there are several ways you can find affordable services without sacrificing quality.
Get Multiple Estimates When considering affordable tree removal, it’s important to get estimates from multiple companies. By comparing prices and services, you can find the best deal that fits your budget. Don’t be afraid to ask questions about the methods they will use, as well as any additional costs such as stump grinding or debris removal.
Consider Package Deals Many tree service companies offer discounts or packages that combine multiple services, such as trimming, removal, and stump grinding. If you need more than one service, this can be a cost-effective way to handle all your tree care needs. Ask the company about available packages or discounts to ensure you’re getting the best deal.
Choose Local Providers Opting for a local tree service Massachusetts provider can often be more affordable than hiring a large, national company. Local tree services typically have lower overhead costs, which they pass on to customers in the form of more competitive pricing. Additionally, local companies are familiar with the specific types of trees common in Massachusetts and can provide tailored advice for your tree care needs.
Regular Maintenance Reduces Costs While tree removal might be necessary in some cases, regular maintenance and trimming can actually save you money in the long run. By keeping your trees healthy and well-maintained, you can prevent the need for costly emergency removals or damage repairs. Hiring professional tree trimmers for routine maintenance is an investment in your property’s overall health and can reduce long-term expenses.
Choosing the Right Tree Service in Massachusetts
When searching for a tree service Massachusetts provider, it’s crucial to choose a company with a solid reputation and a track record of providing high-quality services. Here are some tips for selecting the right professional:
Check Credentials and Insurance: Make sure the company you choose is fully licensed and insured. This protects you in case of accidents or damage to your property during the tree care process.
Look for Reviews and Recommendations: Reading online reviews or asking friends and neighbours for recommendations can give you an idea of the quality of service a tree company provides. Positive customer feedback is often a good indicator of reliability and professionalism.
Evaluate Equipment and Techniques: The right tools and equipment are essential for safe and efficient tree trimming and removal. Ensure the company you hire uses modern, well-maintained equipment to complete the job.
Ask About Clean-Up: Tree trimming and removal can create a lot of debris. Ask the company about their clean-up process to ensure your property is left in good condition after the work is completed.
Conclusion
Whether you need professional tree trimmers for regular maintenance or affordable tree removal services in Massachusetts, it’s important to choose a reliable, experienced company to handle the job. A professional tree service can help keep your trees healthy, safe, and beautiful, while also ensuring your property remains well-maintained. By taking the time to research local providers such as KRG Group and compare pricing, you can get the best value for your money without compromising on quality. Ensure that your trees are in good hands with the right team of experts!

Tree Healthcare Service: A Beginner’s Guide to Proper Tree Care
Trees are not just decorative elements in our surroundings; they are essential for a healthy environment. Providing shade, improving air quality, and supporting biodiversity, trees contribute significantly to our well-being. However, to maintain their health and longevity, trees require consistent care and attention. This is where Tree Healthcare Services play a crucial role.
Tree care involves more than occasional watering. Proper nutrition, disease prevention, pruning, and soil maintenance are all key components of a comprehensive tree healthcare routine. This guide will provide beginners with actionable insights into essential tree care practices, ensuring your trees remain strong, resilient, and beautiful for years to come.
Why Tree Healthcare Services Matter
Investing in Tree Healthcare Services is vital for maintaining a thriving landscape. Trees, like any living organisms, are susceptible to environmental stress, diseases, and pests. A lack of proper care can result in weakened structures, reduced growth, and even premature death.
Professional tree healthcare involves regular inspections, targeted treatments, and preventive measures that address potential threats before they become severe. Arborists use specialized techniques to assess the health of trees and recommend appropriate interventions, such as soil amendments, pruning, and pest control.
By integrating professional tree healthcare into your routine, you can prevent costly damages and ensure that your trees continue to provide ecological and aesthetic benefits.

Understanding Tree Nutrition and Soil Health
Just like humans need a balanced diet, trees require essential nutrients to grow and thrive. Soil quality plays a significant role in determining how well trees absorb these nutrients. Poor soil conditions can lead to nutrient deficiencies, stunted growth, and susceptibility to diseases.
Key nutrients for tree health include nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, and magnesium. Conducting a soil test can help identify deficiencies and inform appropriate fertilization strategies. Organic compost, mulch, and natural fertilizers can enhance soil health and ensure that trees receive the nourishment they need.
Maintaining proper soil aeration and moisture levels is also crucial. Overly compacted soil restricts root growth, while excessive watering can lead to root rot. A well-balanced soil environment allows roots to access nutrients efficiently, promoting overall tree health.
Best Practices for Watering Trees
Watering is a fundamental aspect of tree care, yet it is often misunderstood. While young trees need frequent watering to establish strong root systems, mature trees typically require less frequent but deeper watering sessions.
The best watering approach is deep soaking, which allows moisture to reach the root zone rather than just wetting the surface. Early morning or late evening watering minimizes evaporation, ensuring trees receive adequate hydration. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to fungal infections and weak root development.
Seasonal changes also impact watering needs. During hot summers, trees may require additional hydration, while in colder months, less frequent watering is necessary. Monitoring soil moisture levels and adjusting watering schedules accordingly will keep your trees in optimal condition.
Preventing and Managing Tree Diseases with Tree Healthcare Services
Tree diseases can significantly impact their longevity and appearance. Fungal infections, bacterial diseases, and pest infestations are common threats to tree health. Early detection and proactive management are key to preventing severe damage.
Tree Healthcare Services offer diagnostic assessments to identify diseases at their early stages. Common tree diseases include:
Powdery Mildew: A fungal infection causing white, powdery spots on leaves.
Root Rot: A disease resulting from overwatering, leading to decayed roots.
Anthracnose: A fungal disease causing leaf discoloration and premature shedding.
Preventative measures include proper pruning, ensuring adequate airflow around the tree, and using disease-resistant tree species. If a disease is detected, professional treatment such as fungicide applications or soil modifications can help restore tree health.

The Importance of Regular Pruning and Trimming
Pruning is essential for maintaining tree structure, removing dead or diseased branches, and encouraging healthy growth. Improper pruning can cause significant stress to trees, making them more susceptible to infections and pests.
The best time for pruning depends on the tree species and its growth cycle. In general, late winter or early spring is ideal, as trees are dormant and can recover quickly. Summer pruning can be done to remove weak branches and shape the canopy. However, excessive pruning should be avoided, as it can lead to unnecessary stress.
Professional arborists use specialized techniques such as crown thinning, deadwood removal, and structural pruning to maintain tree health. Regular inspections and maintenance help ensure trees develop strong, well-balanced structures that enhance their stability and longevity.
Protecting Trees from Environmental Stress
Trees face numerous environmental challenges, including extreme weather conditions, pollution, and soil degradation. Adopting proactive strategies can help trees withstand these stressors and maintain their health.
Mulching is an effective way to regulate soil temperature, retain moisture, and suppress weed growth. Applying a layer of organic mulch around the base of the tree provides insulation and prevents soil erosion. However, mulch should not be piled directly against the trunk, as it can cause rot and attract pests.
Strong winds and heavy snowfall can also damage trees, leading to broken branches and structural instability. Installing support systems like stakes or bracing can provide added stability for young or weakened trees. Regular inspections after storms ensure that any damage is promptly addressed, preventing further complications.
Conclusion
Caring for trees requires a combination of proper nutrition, watering, disease prevention, and environmental protection. By understanding the fundamentals of Tree Healthcare Services, beginners can take proactive steps to ensure their trees remain healthy and resilient.
Professional care is essential for maintaining strong and vibrant trees. Whether it’s soil assessment, pruning, or disease management, Tree Healthcare Services provide the expertise needed to promote long-term tree health. Winter Tree Removal: A Key Step in Plant Health Care
When it comes to maintaining the health and safety of your landscape, tree removal is sometimes a necessary step. While many think of spring or summer as the ideal seasons for such tasks, winter often presents the best opportunity for tree removal. Let’s explore why winter is suitable for tree removal, the benefits for your property, and how working with an experienced certified arborist ensures the best outcomes for your trees and plants.

Why Remove Trees in Winter?
Winter tree removal is a proactive step in maintaining your landscape. Here’s why this season is optimal:
Trees are Dormant
During the winter months, most trees enter a state of dormancy. With no leaves to block visibility, arborists can better assess the tree’s structure, identify potential hazards, and remove the tree with precision.
Frozen Ground Minimizes Damage
Cold temperatures often lead to frozen soil, which reduces the risk of damaging your lawn and surrounding vegetation during removal. Equipment used for tree removal has less impact on solid, frozen ground.
Safety During Storm Seasons
Winter storms can wreak havoc on weak or damaged trees. Removing these trees ahead of time minimizes the risk of falling branches or uprooting trees, which can cause property damage or injury.
Easier Access
With surrounding foliage thinned out, arborists can access trees more efficiently. This streamlines the removal process and ensures thorough work.
Signs Your Tree Needs Removal
Not every tree showing signs of decline needs to be removed, but some issues warrant action, especially in winter:
Visible Decay or Rot: Fungi, cracks, or hollowed trunks indicate a compromised tree structure.
Severe Leaning: A tree leaning significantly is at risk of falling, especially during storms or high winds.
Dead or Broken Branches: These can become dangerous projectiles in icy weather.
Pest Infestation: Insects like borers can weaken the tree and spread to healthy ones nearby.
The Role of a Certified Arborist
Hiring a certified arborist ensures tree removal is done safely and with your landscape’s health in mind. Certified arborists bring:
Expertise: They can accurately assess tree health, identify structural weaknesses, and determine if removal is necessary.
Specialized Equipment: Arborists have the tools required for efficient, safe removal from chainsaws to cranes.
Plant Health Care Knowledge: They can recommend post-removal care to support the health of surrounding plants and soil.
Working with Experienced Arborists
Tree removal is a complex task that should always be entrusted to professionals. Certified arborists adhere to safety standards, use cutting-edge techniques, and have an in-depth understanding of plant health care services. Their expertise and experience ensure that every step of the removal process benefits your landscape.
Winter tree removal is an essential component of plant health care. Addressing problem trees during this season protects your property, enhances your landscape, and sets the stage for a vibrant, healthy growing season. Working with a certified arborist guarantees that the job is done safely and efficiently, with your landscape’s health as the top priority.

What Are Girdling Roots?
The roots of a tree are vital to the health and appearance of that tree. Roots provide nutrients, water, stability, and more to keep trees alive and healthy, and any issues that negatively affect roots, in turn, affect trees. Girdling roots is one of the most common issues that trees in urban environments run into and can be a serious problem if left untreated. Below we discuss what root girdling is, what the signs are, and what you can do.

What Are Girdling Roots?
Girdling roots occur when the tree roots circle and coil around the base of the trunk rather than spreading outwards. Think about the effect of wearing a belt that is too tight around your waist and you get the idea of what tree roots do when girdled. Girdling restricts the flow of water and nutrients to the tree, making the tree weaker and more unstable. While maple and linden trees seem the most susceptible, girdling can happen to nearly any tree.
What Causes Root Girdling?
Girdling roots are a common problem for trees in urban environments due to the factors those trees face that trees in nature avoid and those issues are related to a lack of space for proper root growth. Improper planting or transplanting is a significant cause of root girdling. If a tree is in a container or burlap for too long, the roots will eventually circle the trunk or container. If those roots are also not loosened during the planting process, the roots become girdled.
Poor Planting Practices
The same issue can occur when a tree is planted in a hole that is too small: the roots have nowhere to spread and need to encircle the tree to maintain growth, which leads to girdling roots. Pieces of the planting container or other debris in the planting hole can also cause girdling. Heavily compacted soil and proximity to foundations, curbs, and other obstructions (which can hinder root growth) are common causes for root girdling. So because the issue is happening to the roots, you might think that spotting signs of root girdling could be difficult.
Compacted Soil
Soil compaction occurs when excessive pressure is applied to the soil surface, causing the soil particles to press together, reducing pore space and increasing soil density. Wet soil is particularly vulnerable to compaction and compacted soil can negatively affect plant growth and root development. The reduced pore space restricts the movement of air, water, and nutrients within the soil, so plant roots have a more difficult time penetrating and accessing essential resources
Signs of Root Girdling
Spotting root girdling is relatively easy, as plenty of signs can indicate that a tree has girdled roots. The most obvious sign is an abnormal trunk flare. A tree trunk typically flares out and widens at the ground, but if a tree has girdled roots, the trunk may appear straight or narrow, looking more similar to a telephone pole than a tree. Roots circling above the soil line may also indicate girdling, as can sunscald or frost cracks visible on the trunk.
Because girdling roots prevent trees from getting enough water and nutrients, other possible signs include the following:
Thin or sparse canopy
Die-back in the upper tree canopy
Wilting, scorched, off-colored (yellow), or smaller than average leaves
Early fall color and leaf drop
What You Can Do About Girdling Roots
The best solution for treating root girdling in your trees is to contact a landscape professional. Girdled roots can be removed, but removing them yourself may cause damage to the main stem. An experienced plant health care professional or certified arborist will know the proper technique to minimize damage. In severe cases, girdling compromises a tree’s stability, and as a result, the tree may need to be removed. Preventing root girdling involves knowing the best planting methods, from digging the right sized hole to knowing where to mulch, all of which plant health care professionals know.
Girdling From Cables or Straps
Other types of girdling can harm trees as well. This ornamental Spruce is dead from a nylon cord that was used to stake the tree in place after planting. Any cords, wires or ropes should be removed when they are no longer necessary and before they girdle and kill the plant.

Importance of Tree Healthcare: Ensuring Longevity and Health for Your Trees
Trees are invaluable assets, both for their natural beauty and the essential role they play in our ecosystem. They enhance landscapes, provide shade, improve air quality, and increase property values. However, like all living things, trees require regular healthcare and maintenance to thrive. At Tree Doctor USA, we understand the intricate needs of trees and the importance of preventive care. This article delves into the fundamentals of tree healthcare, discussing why it’s necessary, the common issues trees face, and how professional tree healthcare services can make a difference.
Why Tree Healthcare is Essential
Tree healthcare is a preventive approach aimed at maintaining tree vitality, detecting issues early, and implementing treatments before they escalate. Here are some compelling reasons why regular tree healthcare is crucial:
Promotes Tree Longevity: Regular care ensures trees live longer, healthier lives by preventing diseases, pests, and other threats.
Enhances Safety: Unchecked tree issues can lead to weakened branches or even structural failure, which can pose safety risks. Preventive healthcare can identify and resolve these vulnerabilities.
Increases Property Value: Well-maintained trees are aesthetically pleasing and can significantly boost the value of a property.
Supports Local Ecosystems: Healthy trees provide habitats for birds, insects, and other wildlife, fostering biodiversity.

Common Tree Health Issues
Several environmental factors and pathogens can compromise tree health. Understanding these issues can help in detecting signs early on.
1. Pests and Insects
Various pests can infest trees, causing significant damage. For example, beetles, aphids, and borers bore into the wood, weakening the tree’s structure. Mites, caterpillars, and other leaf-eating insects can defoliate a tree, reducing its photosynthetic ability. Left untreated, pest infestations can cause extensive damage or even kill the tree.
2. Tree Diseases
Fungal, bacterial, and viral infections are common threats to tree health. For instance:
Root Rot: A fungal disease that affects the roots, hindering water and nutrient uptake.
Powdery Mildew: This fungal disease covers leaves with a white powder, affecting photosynthesis.
Canker Diseases: These can create open wounds on the trunk or branches, leaving the tree vulnerable to further infections. Professional healthcare services can identify these diseases early and treat them effectively.
3. Nutrient Deficiencies
Just like humans, trees require a balanced diet to grow strong and healthy. Nutrient deficiencies often show in the form of yellowing leaves, stunted growth, and sparse foliage. Soil testing can determine the exact nutrients lacking, and arborists can recommend appropriate fertilizers or amendments to restore nutrient balance.
4. Environmental Stress
Drought, extreme temperatures, and pollution can severely impact tree health. Stress from these factors can lead to weakened trees, making them more susceptible to diseases and pests. Proper watering, mulching, and periodic healthcare checks can help mitigate the impact of environmental stressors.
How Professional Tree Healthcare Can Help
Hiring professional tree healthcare services, like those offered by Tree Doctor USA, can make a world of difference for your trees. Here’s how:
1. Comprehensive Health Assessments
Professional arborists assess the overall health of your trees, checking for visible symptoms of diseases, structural weaknesses, and signs of pest infestations. With specialized knowledge, they can identify issues that may not be apparent to untrained eyes.
2. Soil and Nutrient Management
Tree healthcare professionals test the soil to understand its pH level, moisture content, and nutrient composition. They can then tailor nutrient plans or apply soil amendments to ensure trees have the nutrients they need.
3. Pest and Disease Management
Arborists use environmentally friendly treatments to manage pests and diseases, helping to control infestations without harming the surrounding environment. This can include applying pesticides, fungicides, or biological controls.
4. Pruning and Structural Support
Pruning is a critical part of tree healthcare. Removing dead, weak, or infected branches prevents disease spread and improves tree shape and stability. In cases where a tree needs extra support, professionals may install cables or braces to strengthen weak branches, helping prevent breakage.
5. Root Care and Mulching
Roots are the lifeline of a tree, absorbing nutrients and water. Tree healthcare experts use techniques like root aeration, which involves loosening compacted soil around the root zone to improve root health. Adding mulch can help retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and prevent weed growth.
When Should You Call a Tree Healthcare Professional?
There are certain signs indicating that a tree might need immediate attention from a professional arborist. Here are some key indicators:
Sudden Leaf Drop: If a tree sheds leaves out of season, it could be due to stress or disease.
Cracks or Splits: Deep cracks on branches or the trunk suggest structural issues.
Discolored or Wilted Leaves: Yellowing or wilting of leaves could indicate nutrient deficiencies or disease.
Fungus Growth on Trunk or Roots: Fungal growth signals possible internal decay.
Insect Infestations: Visible pests on leaves, branches, or the trunk may require professional treatment.

Benefits of Regular Tree Healthcare Maintenance
Prevents Costly Damage: Early intervention can prevent small issues from developing into costly problems. For example, treating a minor pest infestation is more affordable than removing a dead tree due to severe infestation.
Enhances Tree Resilience: Proper healthcare strengthens trees, making them more resistant to diseases and environmental stressors.
Improves Curb Appeal: Healthy, well-maintained trees make your landscape more attractive and inviting.
Encourages Growth: Regular care promotes steady, healthy growth, which can help trees reach their full potential.

How Professional Tree Removal is Performed in Confined Spaces
Tree removal is a complex task that requires a blend of expertise, precision, and specialized manpower and equipment. The challenge becomes even more significant when trees are located in confined spaces such as between buildings or near power lines. This article explores how professional tree removal is conducted in these challenging environments, highlighting the techniques, tools, and safety measures involved in the process.

Assessing the Situation
The initial step in any tree removal project is a meticulous and comprehensive assessment. Professional arborists leave no stone unturned in evaluating several factors, including:
Tree Health and Structure: Understanding the tree's condition helps plan its removal. Dead or diseased trees can be more unpredictable and require special handling.
Surrounding Environment: The proximity to buildings, power lines, and other structures is carefully examined to develop a strategy that minimizes risk.
Access Points: Professionals identify the best access routes for equipment and personnel, considering the limitations posed by the confined space.
Developing a Removal Plan
After the initial assessment, arborists create a detailed removal plan. This plan outlines:
Safety Measures: Ensuring the safety of workers, residents, and nearby structures is not just a priority, it's a commitment. Safety protocols are established, and necessary permits are obtained to guarantee a secure operation.
Equipment and Techniques: The appropriate equipment and techniques for the job are selected. This might include cranes, rigging systems, and specialized saws.
Step-by-Step Process: A step-by-step approach is planned, detailing how the tree will be dismantled and removed.
Specialized Equipment and Techniques
Traditional tree removal methods in confined spaces often need to be more practical. Instead, arborists use a combination of specialized equipment and techniques:
Climbing and Rigging: When heavy machinery cannot access the site, skilled climbers ascend the tree with ropes and harnesses. They use rigging systems to lower branches safely and trunk sections to the ground.
Cranes and Aerial Lifts: In some cases, cranes or aerial lifts are brought in to assist with the removal. Cranes can lift large sections of the tree over obstacles, while aerial lifts provide a stable platform for workers to operate.
Sectional Dismantling: The tree is removed in small sections, starting from the top and working downwards. This method allows for control and minimizes the risk of damage to surrounding structures.
Zip Lines and Pulleys: These systems can transport branches and logs horizontally away from the tree to a safe drop zone, reducing the risk of property damage.
Safety Protocols
Safety is a critical component of tree removal in confined spaces. Professional tree care experts follow strict safety protocols to protect themselves and others:
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Workers wear helmets, gloves, harnesses, and other PPE to safeguard against injuries.
Communication: Clear communication among the team members is essential. Hand signals, radios, and other communication tools coordinate actions.
Securing the Area: The work area is cordoned off to keep bystanders at a safe distance. Warning signs and barriers are placed around the site.
Weather Considerations: Weather conditions are closely monitored. High winds, rain, or lightning can increase the risk of accidents and may lead to postponing the job.
Disposal and Cleanup
The next step is disposal and cleanup after the tree has been safely removed. Professionals ensure that:
Debris is Managed: All branches, logs, and debris are collected and either chipped on-site or transported away for disposal or recycling.
Site is Restored: The area is cleaned up, and any damage to the landscape is repaired. Stump grinding may be performed to remove the tree stump and restore the ground surface.
Environmental Considerations: Where possible, eco-friendly disposal methods are used. This may include recycling wood chips for mulch, repurposing logs for other uses, or using the wood for biomass energy production. These practices not only reduce waste but also contribute to environmental sustainability.
Tree removal in confined spaces is a highly specialized task that requires careful planning, the right equipment, and a focus on safety. Professional arborists have the skills and tools necessary to navigate these challenges effectively. By understanding the complexities involved and trusting experts to handle the job, property owners can ensure the safe and efficient removal of trees, even in the most challenging environments.

for the ones who sing in the dead of night - chapter 2
a hadestown au. in which the ghosts of the city live underground is taken very, very literally
chapter 1 read on ao3
The sun makes its slow way across the sky, and Mercy wonders whether she regrets leaving. Everything she’s ever owned is crammed into the set of drawers by her mattress, and she's not stupid enough to think she can go back for it. Sully might be an idiot, but he’d make you hurt for a blow to his pride, if you gave him the chance.
She’s dreamed of getting out, of course - who wouldn’t? But every time she’s been fed up enough to try, it’s come down to this: New York is a big, big city. And she doesn’t know it, not really, not beyond the blocks she’s grown up on. So she’s hung around, told herself that in hard times, any crew is better than none. Waited for the bravery to show up. She looks over to Swan, slumped against the tree, chest rising and falling gently. Thinks that she hadn’t expected it to show up in the form of a person.
Mercy knows it’s rude to stare, but you can’t exactly blame her, given the opportunity. Swan’s clothes have definitely seen better days, her t-shirt fraying and half of New York’s mud worked into the ends of her jeans. Her hair haloes her face in the midday sunlight, and she looks almost… peaceful? At the very least, she’s lost the crease at the centre of her forehead. She stirs, murmurs something in her sleep - that was the first thing Mercy had noticed, when she found her on the stairs. Before they’d introduced themselves, before Sully, before they’d run. Hell, she thinks. I did it. I left. She reaches for regret, comes up empty.
When the sun begins to dip, they set off for Van Cortlandt. For all she’s heard about the meeting, Mercy isn’t sure what she expects - everyone in this city likes to talk big, and not many follow through. But the closer they come to the park, the more the streets fill. Crews eye each other warily, bunching tightly together in groups of familiar colours. Mercy pulled the green bandana from her hair hours ago - she is under no illusions of how much respect the other crews have for the Orphans.
They pass Norwood Station, and she can’t resist leaning over the railing, peering into the chasm at the end of the stairs. Wonders if the folk down there knew that big things were happening up top - did they know what the living were up to? Did they care? You could hear them singing, sometimes, when the nights were still. Feel the ground shake as they passed beneath. It takes her a moment to notice Swan has taken several steps back. Mercy leans back into the land of the living, tilts her head. “You don’t like ‘em?”
Swan shrugs. Her expression is neutral enough that Mercy might have been convinced, were she not also keeping a careful distance from the subway entrance. Mercy adds this to the list of facts she’s assembling about Swan. Stubborn, talks in her sleep, easily flustered. Doesn’t want to talk about family - which, join the club. ‘Scared of ghosts’ feels endearingly out of place among them.
“Can’t be much worse than up here, can it? At least they’re not hungry.” But she keeps walking. “And surely we know some people down there. It’s not like they’re all strangers.”
Swan winces in a way that makes Mercy think that might be part of the problem. She drops the subject.
They keep towards the back of the crowd, knowing they look out of place. Crew after crew stride across the grass, colours flowing like a river towards Cyrus’s promise. They’re not going to be able to see her, she realises - not hanging back like this. She tugs Swan towards the half-constructed fence at the field’s perimeter, surrounded by scaffolding. If they can’t get close, at least they can get higher up.
Swan scales the scaffolding, reaches down a hand to help Mercy up. And as the entirety of the crowd comes into view, she catches her breath - it's an ocean of bodies, pressed tight together, jostling to be closest to the centre. The Riffs form a wall, three men deep, between the crowd and the makeshift pallet stage at the park's centre. As the sun dips below the horizon, a man in a long black coat steps onto it - Masai, she thinks. As with Cyrus, his name has always seemed more of a local legend than an actual person. It’s strange to see them in the flesh. He stands there, arms crossed, staring the crowd into silence. And it shouldn't work, but an anticipatory hush falls over the sea of people. He nods once, sharply, and then he is stepping to the side. And Cyrus is taking the stage.
She is smaller than Mercy was expecting, the bright red of her jacket setting her apart from the crowd of black-clad Riffs. She spreads her arms wide, turning to welcome the whole crowd, the whole city, into the gesture. Her lips move, but they're too far away for the words to reach them clearly. A Riff a little further into the crowd repeats the words, and then another yet further in does the same. Mercy watches her opening message move through the press of bodies like a game of telephone. The Riff nearest them smirks as he hears the words, passes them on - "Can you count, suckers?"
The park lights come on, illuminating Cyrus from behind. Masai has been staring out into the crowd, as though daring them to try something. But here he glances up at her, just for a moment, and even from this distance Mercy sees the smile. Cyrus’s words might be filtering through a dozen intermediaries in every direction, but no one is looking at them. Even up front, where some of the larger crews are pressed shoulder to shoulder against each other, no one jostles. Every face is turned to the front. It’s all men, that close to the centre, and yet Cyrus holds court like she was made for it.
It’s no mystery to her, why Sully was adamant about staying home. He hates to feel small, and who wouldn’t, next to Cyrus? More importantly, the rest of the crew might figure out what a leader looks like, and from that deduce that he wasn’t much of one. But she thinks he’s going to have to deal with the fallout, anyway. Because Cyrus is conjuring her vision for a very different city, and even Swan - who Mercy suspects is not the optimistic type - is leaning forward, her eyes not leaving Cyrus’s face.
In the swell of the crowd, New York feels as big as ever - but for once, that might just be a good thing. If Cyrus has brought them all here, colours blurring together, what couldn’t she do? Change feels as real as the summer breeze that’s catching at her hair. She’s free to go where she wants. She has someone to go there with. On a day as strange as this one, what was one more miracle?
Her eyes are still on Swan, and so she hears, rather than sees, the shot.
#warriors musical#warriors concept album#swercy#looked up the New York City tree map to see what kind of trees#they have in Bronx park and van cortlandt park#but unfortunately I simply do not think mercy cares about trees or knows how to ID them. this is the problem with writing characters who are#a different brand of autistic to you the author. that said the New York City tree map is SO cool and I highly recommend looking at it#cannot remember who came up with the swan talks in her sleep headcanon but I thank you for your service#one more chapter and then we get to the underworld <3 which I am very excited about#fic#mine

🌳 Tree Planting, The Key to Restoring Our Forests and Planet! 🌍
Tree planting is a powerful process that not only brings life back to our planet but also helps restore vital ecosystems. Here are 10 key facts about how planting trees helps rebuild our National Forests:
🌱 Precision Planting: Each tree is planted by hand for optimal survival.
🌿 Strategic Locations: Using natural features like logs and rocks to protect seedlings.
🕰️ Timing Is Everything: Trees are planted in early spring or after rain for best root establishment.
🌦️ Climate Adaptability: Trees are planted in slow-recovery areas, especially post-wildfire or stress.
🌍 Ecosystem Protection: Each tree contributes to rebuilding habitats and maintaining clean air.
🚜 Transport Methods: In rugged areas, horses or mules deliver seedlings to remote spots.
🌳 Massive Scale: Millions of trees are planted annually to restore damaged lands.
🌿 Ongoing Care: Trees require monitoring, replanting, and care beyond initial planting.
🌾 Erosion Control: Tree roots stabilize soil, especially after natural disasters.
🌱 Restoring Balance: Tree planting helps absorb carbon and fight climate change.
