Because my sister asked… Here I am in the process of painting ‘wattles and no animals’. It seemed like a challenge but of course I am still adding figures to these tree scapes as there is that lovely connection. I wanted the wild feel of wattles on river banks and bush settings. They have a magnificent freedom unlike the tamed backyard versions. Still more to go to add some more yellows, details and the abundance of flowers. The trick is to keep the freedom of what I have and not take it down… I had a photo I’d taken awhile ago with a Wattle with the flowers caressing the earth… I love the wild freedom of these trees in nature. My photo had a path but it was straight…still more to do but loving the simplicity and freedom of loose brush marks, stencilled circles and spray paint. A new way to explore trees and that beautiful connection…that sense of opposites with the wild flowing freedom that is flow and grounded calm. I want that beautiful energy that I feel as I explore trees and there are unique personalities. The joy is in stepping into the magic of these imagined landscapes and the tree guardians that live there. [Ever since meeting such kind and noble folk in a realm where hostile creatures could eat you whole, Wigfrid takes it upon herself to protect those she holds dear, those being her new friends and companions. Whether it’s the raging fires of dragonfly or the lumbering steps of the treeguardian, Wigfrid, of course will see if they’re able to handle it, but 8/10 times she tends to jump in and lend a hand. Or do all the fighting herself if it’s needed. (to her, it usually is.) ]

William was snapped back into reality as he was shoved to the side, time starting again going from frozen to fast motion as he watched WX-78 take the hit from the treeguardian that was meant for him, eyes wide in shock.

❝ Bloody fucking hell. ❞

He scrambled to his feet and instinct took over, leaving his mind a burst of static as he grabbed his backpack and reached into it until his shaking hands wrapped around a hilt. He ignored the burst of whispers that followed and pulled out a dark sword, too long to have been able to fit inside the pack and yet—

❝ Hey, you bloody overgrown pine bastard! ❞ he spat out, slashing its side drawing its agro. He managed to kite its next blow, nicking it again with the dark blade.

...in his haze of his mind and whispers he started to realize just how the hell was he doing this⎯ ?

He stumbled backwards and narrowly dodged the next swing, heart racing in fear.

They mimic inspecting nails they don’t have- maybe checking if their hand got scratched and needed polished again soon? Likely just a gesture of pride.

“YES, YOU REPEATED YOURSELF.”

Not surprising. Organic memory storage was subpar at best. Lifting their axe back up, they examine the handle: okay, this one would likely survive a few more trees. They retrieve the shovel strapped across their back, pulling the stump from the ground before moving to another tree. They make a small mocking sound,

“DO I LOOK LIKE I NEED ASSISTANCE?”

Before winding up and swinging their axe against this new tree, only for it to stand up and groan. Oh dear. The bot flinches away, jumping back as far as they can. That was certainly new.

     ❝ No, no I suppose you don’t. ❞

Well… at least he tried to offer.  William let out a silent sigh and shook his head, turning around to continue down the path towards camp, he couldn’t tell how long was left in the day but he certainly didn’t want to risk it. 

The loud sound of branches moving and cracking made him pause in confusion. He went to look back towards the automaton, question on his tongue before letting out an undignified scream.

     ❝  Bloody hell. ❞ 

William stared, mouth agape at the sight of an entire tree standing up, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. It- it shouldn’t be possible it- it had to be an illusion of a great magician. A walking evergreen, it made no sense. But… that was magic, wasn’t it? This whole world. It was filled with magic.

     The warnings of the lumberjack were faintly remembered, but it felt as if he were underwater. 

He couldn’t move, frozen in place, completely mesmerized as the treeguardian slowly approached him.

I simply love these woodlands near my mother’s home in my native Devon in England. I photographed these trees last year when visiting my family, using my Fujifilm XT-1 and my then new Fujinon 18-135mm, that I bought especially for that trip. In case you didn’t know, I have an ongoing project shooting trees: I am passionate about preserving more trees for the future as they help humans in so many ways and are beautiful as well.
