INT - OUTSIDE THE BOX

The fight is in full swing. VIC groggily scans the area for STU.

He takes a fighter stance and squints.

VIC Tough guy, huh?

Reveal: He's squaring off with a mannequin in a similar cardigan as STU.

VIC Wanna face me like a man? All right, here with go.

His fist connects and the mannequin's head flies off.

STU emerges next to the bicycle aisle weiding a steel baseball bat.

STU We don't have to be violent! We can talk!

VIC picks up a football

VIC I'm not gonna site in a kumbaya ----- ----- with you...

He gets ready to throw a spiral.

VIC ...and cry like a little girl!

He releases and it misses its mark.

STU flings the bat at him---

STU I'm calling time out!

---then a wood one...

VIC Agh!

then another...

STU No! No! Time out!

Another bat lands.

VIC Agghhhh!

STU Stop! I said time out!

STU keeps flinging.

STU Respect the time out!

VIC Wait! Wait! Wait!

He holds up his hands.

VIC Time out!

STU flings another one anyway...and it lands, hard.

VIC face darkens. He screams and charges towards STU.

STU manages to duck through the aisle and VIC crashes into the bikes.

He emerges...livid.

VIC You little ----!

He untangles himself and searches for the driver.

VIC Where'd you go?

STU managed to sneak behind the cop and flings a toddler's bike towards his head.

STU Hey!

It connects. THUNK!

VIC groans and lands on the floor with a thud. STU runs towards safety but pauses and turns back.

STU Girls are strong! They give birth to us.

VIC clutches his head as STU resumes his retreat.

STU You should wish you were like a woman!

While lying on the floor VIC flings a trike at STU.

STU The future is female! oooorrrfff.

STU gets hit on the leg and goes down too.

Fever Tree: Fever Tree (1968)

This is what the world was listening to 50 years ago ... well maybe not the whole world, but at least a few dozen stoned hippies.

Actually, that’s not fair, because California-based Fever Tree -- which originated in Houston, TX as The Bostwick Vines -- did enjoy a modest hit when this debut album’s first single, “San Francisco Girls (Return of the Native),” went to No. 91 in the U.S. charts in June of ‘68.

Alas, the single’s abundant Flower Power clichés very much reflected the band’s sky’s-the-limit ambitions, which saw them blending disparate styles like hard rock (“Where Do You Go?”), fuzz rock (“Ninety-Nine and a Half”), folk rock (“Nowadays Clancy Can't Even Sing”), and more into their psychedelic soup.

There are also all manner of classical and baroque pop trimmings liberally doused on top of tracks like “Imitation Situation 1,” “Filigree and Shadow,” “The Sun Also Rise,” and “Come With Me (Rain Song).”

Amazingly, I think Fever Tree forgot to use a sitar! 

But they do cover The Beatles -- twice! -- on a combo platter of “Day Tripper” and “We Can Work It Out.”

And yet, for all of the band’s evident and eclectic talents, when I spun this record for the first time, just one song perked my ears right up, and it was the late arriving “Unlock My Door,” which takes those tasteful string arrangements into an unusually hopeless, melancholy place (right up my alley!), and jams some forceful Zeppelin-predating acoustic strums halfway through.

As for Fever Tree’s career, well, it seems to have sputtered to a half a few years and a few albums later, never having tasted another serious hit, but obviously leaving some kind of pleasant acid aftertaste on the tongues of psychedelic music enthusiasts ... and visiting hard rockers such as myself.

p.s. -- But vocalist Jim Beach did resurface in California-based, semi-Christian heavy psych ensemble Fraction, whose 1971 opus Moon Blood trades hands for thousands of dollars nowadays.
