Trivikram Srinivas Unveils Rentala Jayadeva’s ‘Mana Cinema: First Reel’ Book in Grand Launch- Telugu Funda
Renowned filmmaker Trivikram Srinivas unveiled the much-anticipated book Mana Cinema: First Reel, written by celebrated journalist and Nandi Award-winning cine critic Dr. Rentala Jayadeva. The launch event was held at the Boyi Vijayabharathi venue during the Hyderabad Book Fair and drew eminent personalities from diverse fields.
The book, published by Emesco Publications, is the result of Jayadeva’s meticulous 25-year research on the history of South Indian cinema. It delves into the early days of filmmaking, tracing the evolution of cinema across Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam languages.
Tumblr media
A Star-Studded Launch Event
Trivikram Srinivas presented the first copy of the book to IRS officer Krishna Koundinya and the second copy to Emesco’s co-chairman Vijay Kumar. The event witnessed participation from notable figures such as:
Mamidi Harikrishna, Director of Telangana Language and Culture Department
Acharya D. Chandrasekhar Reddy, a mentor to Jayadeva
Afsar, a poet and critic
Kalpana Rentala, Jayadeva’s sister and an accomplished writer
Dasharath, director
Indira Parimi, senior journalist
Trivikram fondly recalled his first meeting with Jayadeva in Chennai during his early struggling days. Praising Jayadeva’s passion for cinema, he said, “Jayadeva’s writing captures the essence of films with rare authenticity. His new book is gripping, much like the first reel of a great movie.”
Insights into “Mana Cinema: First Reel”
The book offers a compelling narrative, providing insights into South Indian cinema’s formative years. Trivikram noted that the book captivates readers within the first ten pages, akin to how a film draws audiences into its story. Despite its 500-page length, the director remarked he found it easy to read and immensely engaging.
Jayadeva’s detailed research even clarified the release date of India’s first Telugu talkie, Bhakta Prahlada. Emesco’s Vijay Kumar and IRS officer Krishna Koundinya lauded Jayadeva for his groundbreaking research.
Words of Gratitude
Dr. Rentala Jayadeva expressed heartfelt thanks to his family, particularly his sister Kalpana Rentala, who inspired him to write this book. He dedicated the work to the many mentors and figures who shaped his career.
The launch of Mana Cinema: First Reel marks a significant milestone in celebrating South Indian cinema’s legacy. Readers and cinema enthusiasts alike will find this book a treasure trove of history and insight.

Jagapathi Babu Opens Up About Mahesh Babu's "Guntur Kaaram": "It Became Messy, Difficult to Finish"
Telugu actor Jagapathi Babu, known for his versatile roles in cinema, recently shared candid insights about his experience working on Mahesh Babu's film "Guntur Kaaram." While Jagapathi Babu has been a sought-after antagonist in the industry, his involvement in this project didn't quite meet his expectations.
Tumblr media
In a revealing interview with Times Now, Jagapathi Babu expressed initial optimism about the film, acknowledging its potential scope. However, as production progressed, the experience turned sour for the actor. He admitted, "I would love to work with Mahesh Babu always. But, to be honest, I didn’t enjoy 'Guntur Kaaram'. It was supposed to be very different, with more characterisation. Unfortunately, it became sort of messy after a while, making it difficult to finish."
Despite his professional commitment, Jagapathi Babu emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards in their collaborations. "I did whatever I had to do," he remarked, "I don’t want to waste our combinations on such films; it should be the best."
While Jagapathi Babu and Mahesh Babu have delivered blockbuster hits like "Maharshi" and "Srimanthudu," "Guntur Kaaram" fell short of expectations. The film received mixed reviews and faced tough competition at the box office during the Sankranti season.
Directed by Trivikram Srinivas, "Guntur Kaaram" marked Mahesh Babu's comeback after a two-year hiatus. The star-studded cast also included Sreeleela, Meenakshi Chaudhry, Ramya Krishnan, Prakash Raj, Sunil, and Jayaram. Despite its challenges, Mahesh Babu's next venture with SS Rajamouli promises to be an exciting adventure, described as an Indian rendition of "Indiana Jones."

SHOCKING: Near House-Full shows of Hanuman replaced with that of Mahesh Babu’s Guntur Kaaram
Last month, the screen sharing issues over Shah Rukh Khan-starrer Dunki and Prabhas-starrer Salaar became the talk of the town. Bollywood Hungama was the first to report the viral news that Salaar makers had decided to pull their film from PVR Inox and Miraj properties in the South after they accused the multiplex chains of ‘unfair trade practice’. A few hours later, thanks to the impact of the article, all parties renegotiated the deal. It was expected that show-sharing would take place. Alas, it didn’t happen. Instead, exhibitors were asked to play either of the two films. As a result, some opted for Dunki while others decided to play Salaar. However, what unfolded in the Telugu industry over the last few days is much more shocking than Salaar vs Dunki screen sharing fight.
Tumblr media
On Monday, the exhibition sector across the country got a shock when the famous Prasads Multiplex, Hyderabad cancelled nearly sold-out shows of Hanuman and replaced them with that of Mahesh Babu-starrer Guntur Kaaram. The social media was abuzz with pictures of the famous theatre’s booking page. Earlier, Hanuman had 15 shows and later, the 1:00 pm, 1:30 pm and 7:50 pm shows of Hanuman were cancelled. Meanwhile, Guntur Kaaram was earlier playing in 7 shows. Later on, it got four more shows. A similar scenario was also reported in other centres in Telangana.
An exhibition source told us, “It’s unheard of to see a show, which is nearly house full, being replaced by shows of a film which is not doing as well. This is unacceptable and it would have been understandable if Guntur Kaaram had a huge demand too. However, it hasn’t performed as per expectations while shows of Hanuman are full everywhere. The demand for it is crazy and yet, it’s getting a raw deal.”
Another exhibition insider commented, “Theatres have the power to reduce or increase shows. But this happens as per the demand and supply usually. In an ideal scenario, Hanuman’s shows should have increased while that of Guntur Kaaram should have reduced since the latter is a crowd-puller. But in this scenario, the opposite has happened.”
On Saturday, January 13, a complaint was filed with the Telugu Film Producers Council (TFPC) by Hanuman’s makers alleging unfair theatre practices. TFPC released a statement stating that Mythri Movies Distributors LLP (the distributor) had made an agreement with some theatres in Telangana to screen Hanuman from January 12. But some theatres did not honour the agreement and failed to show the film. Hence, the distributor and producer, Niranjan Reddy, filed a complaint with the TFPC.
The statement remarked that “The theatres did not screen the movie Hanuman as per the agreement. The distributors and producers suffered huge losses. So these theatres must immediately start showing the movie Hanuman and bear the loss so far”. It also said that “Such moves affect the entire Telugu film industry which runs based on faith, morality and justice”.
Hanuman and Guntur Kaaram were not the only Telugu releases during the Sankranthi festival week. Venkatesh-starrer Saindhav released on January 13 while Nagarjuna-starrer Naa Saami Ranga arrived in cinemas on January 14. Hanuman, nevertheless, has emerged as the dark horse as it collected more than Rs. 50 crores in four days and is set for a huge run. Even in Hindi, it has performed beyond expectations.
Meanwhile, On Tuesday, January 16, Prasads Multiplex is playing just 6 shows of Hanuman while Guntur Kaaram has been provided with 8 shows. Interestingly, on Wednesday, January 17, the situation will be reversed as the modern mythological entertainer will have as many as 10 shows while the Trivikram-directorial has been allotted only 6 shows.

Frustration Boils Over: Mahesh Babu Fans Create Ruckus After Iconic Scenes Cut from ‘Khaleja’ Re-Release
With special premieres held in a few theatres the day before, the 2010 Mahesh Babu film Khaleja, directed by Trivikram Srinivas, was re-released in 4K in theatres on May 30. However, when fans waited in line to see the cult favourite movie, they were taken aback by the absence of certain scenes. Soon after, videos and images of supporters arguing with the theatre administration over the film's incompleteness made their way online.
Khaleja is the subject of chaos caused by Mahesh Babu fans.
Many moviegoers expressed their displeasure with the team on X (previously Twitter) over the lost footage. "Orey song cut chesaru ani chepali kadha raa mundhey fans tho aatalu adadhu @KhalejaTheFilm direct adham pagal d*****u manolu cinema api d*****u, Sunday monday song ledhu movie lo," one devotee wrote alongside a video of spectators bickering with the projectionist while the movie was playing. (You must inform the audience in advance if you intend to edit footage. Here, fans shattered glass and prevented the film from playing. The song for Sunday Monday is not included.

Tumblr media
While Bollywood often takes the spotlight, regional cinema in India is just as integral to the country’s cinematic identity. In this post, we’ll explore the rich diversity of regional cinemas, including Tamil, Telugu, Marathi, and others, highlighting how they have shaped the broader landscape of Indian desicinema.
Tamil Cinema: Kollywood’s Global Influence
Tamil cinema, known as Kollywood, has long been one of the most influential film industries in India. The Tamil film industry is renowned for its strong storytelling, larger-than-life characters, and its blend of drama, action, and music. Legendary actor Rajinikanth is the face of Tamil cinema, with a cult following in India and worldwide. His films like Baasha (1995) and Kabali (2016) have grossed millions and earned international acclaim.
Kollywood also boasts the works of filmmakers like Mani Ratnam, who revolutionized Tamil cinema with films like Roja (1992) and Bombay (1995). His films skillfully combine social issues with romance and music, and they have earned a place in both national and international film festivals.
Telugu Cinema: Tollywood’s Epic Narrative
Telugu cinema, often referred to as Tollywood, is known for its massive budgets, grandiose spectacles, and larger-than-life storytelling. The Baahubali franchise (2015, 2017), directed by S.S. Rajamouli, redefined what was possible in Indian cinema, pushing technical boundaries while weaving an epic tale of politics, power, and love. The film’s success catapulted Telugu cinema into the global spotlight, and its visual grandeur set a new standard for Indian filmmakers.
Tollywood is also known for its innovative filmmakers like Trivikram Srinivas and Sukumar, who blend entertainment with thought-provoking themes. The success of RRR (2022), another Rajamouli masterpiece, further solidified Telugu cinema’s global reach, winning international accolades and widespread admiration.
Marathi Cinema: The Heart of Realism
Marathi cinema has a distinct identity within Indian cinema, known for its realistic storytelling and focus on social issues. The Marathi film industry has been a platform for filmmakers who explore the struggles of ordinary people. Films like Swaas (2004) and Court (2014) have won acclaim at prestigious international film festivals.
Marathi desicinemas also gave rise to some of India’s finest actors and directors. The works of directors like Nandita Das (Firaaq, 2008) and films such as The Disciple (2020) highlight the unique narratives that Marathi filmmakers offer, often dealing with themes of identity, culture, and modernity.
Punjabi Cinema: The Cultural Renaissance
Punjabi cinema is another rapidly growing industry that resonates with both Indian and international audiences, particularly in the diaspora communities. The industry saw a surge in popularity in the 2000s with films like Jatt & Juliet (2012) and Carry On Jatta (2012), which mixed comedy with drama and showcased Punjabi culture in a fresh, engaging way.
Moreover, Punjabi cinema is also producing socially relevant films, such as Chauthi Koot (2015), which deals with the 1980s Sikh insurgency. The diversity of Punjabi cinema allows for a wide range of narratives, from light-hearted comedies to serious historical dramas.
In conclusion, regional cinema is an essential part of the Indian film industry. Each regional industry has its own unique style, and their stories offer fresh perspectives on culture, society, and human emotion. As global interest in these films grows, regional cinema is helping redefine what Indian cinema is all about.

The Mahesh Babu starrer performed slightly better in Coastal Andhra, where the Sankranti boost was strongest, with final numbers similar to Sarkaru Vaari Paata, but the latter film was an under performer.
