i've been waiting forever for you to open your asks because i love your animations so much, they're so fun.

i've been doubting that i might ever make a livable career out of my art; but then i saw that you did some vault guy animations for fallout and i realized that there's a niche out there for everybody, including me! so, thank you.

I had a little rummage around on your bloggo but can’t see any pictures you cheeky fellow! I love to draw lots of dumb stuff, I think the key for me is to be working outwardly, as in making work with other people in mind, but without compromising too much on your personal taste. It’s the old thing of making what you want to see, but hoping that there’s enough people out there to warrant it as a commercial venture. Blah blah blah, I just draw lots and lots then sift through them to find things that work for me in the moment, then try and flesh those out a bit. That said it’s easy to have integrity when you’re not relying on it as your main income source. I’m an art teacher four days a week, so making art is the fun in my day rather than a stressful challenge of tight deadlines and huge expectations.

Working with Ivan Dixon and Greg Sharp at Rubberhouse was a dream come true, they had loads of great creative projects where we got to animate in authentic styles from the thirties, forties and fifties! I didn’t know what Fallout was when they put me on the gig, hadn’t played many games since the PS2 generation. The studio has disbanded now with Greg running Truba Animation and Ivan being a co-director at Studio Showoff, but they’re each still running amazing 2D productions.

As far as finding your style and audience goes I owe a lot of it to contributing to and running @loopdeloop-blog , it’s a monthly animation challenge where we would all make something dumb around a theme and then get together and have a public screening. It’s a very surreal feeling to be at a screening with everyone watching something you made and taking in their reaction. We’re just getting it back up off the ground after things got all screwed up with covid, you should check it out! It’s a great way to get animators out of their caves to socialise each and I’ve made so many lasting friendships because of it.

Here’s a loop think I spent almost all of my free time on one month back in 2012 for a LoopdeLoop screening, no idea what the theme was… but I guarantee I wouldn’t have worked so hard on a personal project without wanting to impress everyone at the screening as a goal.

Weeks 1 and 2

2 possible ideas –

To pursue the potential music video project I reached out to local student band, Necktr, whom I have previously designed gig posters for. Luckily, they had an upcoming single for their new EP that they wanted an animated video for. This gave me the opportunity to test a visual style for the final project I had been considering. A set of stylistic hand-drawn animations which could be timed to music.

·         Len Lye – Rainbow Dance (1936)

Concept

As Necktr are a Leeds based band who collaborated through the Leeds college of music, my aim was to create a set of animations that captured the essence of the Leeds ‘Student Scene’. Unlike the UMO music video where the scenes are all set inside a train, mine would be situated in a student accommodation block, where through the windows you would see different characters and through the mise en scene you’re given a glance at their differing personalities. Part of what makes Necktr’s sound so eclectic is the diversity of the bands personalities and styles, these apartment animations will act as an ode to their eclectic style. The second set of drawings are all abstract caricatures of the band members, loosely inspired by Matisse’s line-drawings and his series of cut outs. This gave the animations a quirky aesthetic that I was aiming for, whilst also making them quite simple to draw, which therefore cut down editing time. The finished film should convey a sense of the bands identity and personality to the audience.

Reflection

What worked well:

·         The grainy overlay which was constructed by stitching together a sequence of blank 35mm photographs

·         The use of multiple layers reacting with each other differently due to altered opacity settings

·         The stylistic nature of the hand-drawn images

Things to change:

·         For my final project I’ll aim to add more movement into my animations. These animations were essentially just stills and their static nature soon became repetitive.

·         Add more layers to create further visual stimulation.

  Process

Hand drawing the images on paper – scanning in the drawings into PS (heighten the contrast to make the images black and white) – Animate the images in Premiere Pro – Assemble the animations with textured backgrounds colour in PrP (layering the images using different opacity settings to make the backgrounds transparent) – Time animations to the Music – Add extra orange line animations to give the film more vibrancy and edge.

Set in a apocalyptic world where everyone is focused on capturing and maintaining control over God, The Lord follows the twin tales of a little girl who is just trying to survive as she is swept along by society and of the “messiah” at the head of the civilisation, who is struggling to keep control of both God and himself.
