Under Armour Needs Its Own Version of the PK80

Nike’s unprecedented, in-season college basketball tournament, the PK80, an homage to its founder Phil Knight, held over Thanksgiving weekend 2017, was a showcase for the brand that its competitors, no doubt, envied. Including 16 teams and spanning two arenas, it was an incredible feat and nearly perfect had the field been even more stacked (Kentucky and Georgetown the two notable schools missing).

It seems unlikely that another 16-team in-season tournament will be held in the near future, but it sets a bar that should be aimed for nonetheless. Under Armour, one of the Swoosh’s two main competitors in the collegiate outfitting arena, has been building an impressive stable of schools in recent years. Here is a blueprint for their modest take on the PK80, The UA Invitational (UAI).

First, the basics:

The NCAA does not allow teams from the same conference to compete against each other in an in-season tournament (Nike’s end around for having the likes of UNC and Duke in the same one was creating separate brackets, thus dual arenas), so despite the aforementioned stable of UA-repped schools, the pool isn’t strong enough to merit 16 teams. We’re going with eight.

The UAI should be held near UA’s global HQ, so it’ll be played at the Capital One Arena in D.C.

Eight conferences will be represented - the ACC, AAC, Big East, Big 10, Big 12, Pac-12, SEC, and Patriot League - with local schools Maryland (alma mater of founder Kevin Plank) and Navy competing.

Now, to the field:

Cincinnati (AAC)

St. John’s (Big East)

Maryland (Big 10)

Texas Tech (Big 12)

UCLA (Pac-12)

South Carolina (SEC)

Navy (Patriot)

Though not loaded with Blue Bloods, it includes big names, with over half of the UAI having been to at least a Final Four in their history.

Fox should jump on this. They have the rights to several of the conferences and John Tesh’s magnum opus, it just seems natural.
