North Korean hackers have stolen the equivalent of billions of dollars in recent years and the nation is seeking to amass even greater wealth through illicit means, experts told DW.
Hackers belonging to the Lazarus Group — a notorious North Korean crypto theft ring — stole a record $1.5 billion (some €1.37 billion) in digital tokens from Dubai-based cryptocurrency exchange ByBit in late February. The company said the hackers had accessed its digital wallet for Ethereum, the second-largest electronic currency after Bitcoin.
Binance News, a new platform operated by cryptocurrency exchange firm Binance, reported last month that North Korea now has some 13,562 Bitcoins, the equivalent of $1.14 billion. Bitcoin is the world's oldest and best known cryptocurrency, often compared with gold due to its alleged resistance to inflation. Only the US and Great Britain have greater reserves of the currency, Binance News said, citing crypto data provider Arkham Intelligence.
"Let's not mince words — [North Korea] achieved this through theft," Aditya Das, an analyst at cryptocurrency research firm Brave New Coin in Auckland, New Zealand, told DW.
"Global policing agencies like the FBI have publicly warned that North Korean state-sponsored hackers are behind numerous attacks on cryptocurrency platforms," he added.
Hackers use social engineering against crypto firms
Despite those warnings, however, crypto firms are still being robbed and North Korean hackers are becoming increasingly sophisticated, the analyst said.
"North Korea employs a wide range of cyberattack techniques, but they've become especially known for their skill in social engineering," said Das.
"Many of their operations involve infiltrating employee hardware, then using that access to breach internal systems or lay traps from the inside."
The hacker's primary targets are crypto startups, exchanges and decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms due to their "often under-developed security protocols," he said.
Recovery of funds 'extremely rare'
Elite North Korean hackers tend to take their time when infiltrating a legitimate global organization, often by impersonating venture capitalists, recruiters or remote IT workers to build up trust and breach firms' defenses.
"One group, Sapphire Sleet, lures victims into downloading malware disguised as job applications, meeting tools or diagnostic software — essentially turning victims into their own attack vectors," Das said.
Once crypto has been stolen, Das says recovery is "extremely rare." Cryptocurrency systems are designed to make transactions irreversible and striking back against North Korean operatives "is not a viable option because these are nation-state actors with top-tier cyber defenses."
Kim Jong Un's regime 'saved' by cryptocurrency theft
Park Jung-won, a professor of law at Dankook University, said North Korea previously relied on risky transactions — such as smuggling narcotics and counterfeit goods or supplying military instructors to African nations — to earn illicit funds.
The legal expert says the advent of cryptocurrency "has been a huge opportunity" for dictator Kim Jong Un.
"It is probably fair to say that given the way the world was cracking down on Pyongyang's smuggling efforts, crypto has saved the regime," Park told DW. "Without it, they would have been completely without funds. They know that and they have invested heavily in training the best hackers and getting them up to a very high level of skill."
"The money that they are stealing is going straight to the government and the assumption is that it is being spent on weapons and greater military technology as well as the Kim family," according to Park.
North Korea immune to international pressure
Park does not believe that outside pressure would force North Korea to end hacking attacks.
"For Kim, the survival of his dynasty is the most important priority," the law professor said.
"They have become accustomed to this source of revenue, even if it is illegal, and they will not change," he added. "There is no reason for them to suddenly start abiding by international law and there is no way to apply more pressure."
Das agrees there are few tools available to influence North Korea. He says companies need to do everything in their power to avoid becoming the next victim.
"Best practices like secure-by-design smart contracts, constant internal verification and social engineering awareness are essential if the industry wants to stay ahead," he said.
Crypto firms need universal security standards
There's growing momentum for sector-wide information sharing which would help crypto firms detect North Korean tactics and avert attacks, but Das warns that crypto remains "fragmented" because there is no universal security standard. Also, North Korean hackers are good at turning security tools against their users, according to the analyst.
"In the Bybit case, the attackers exploited Safe, a multi-signature wallet system meant to enhance security. Ironically, this added security layer became the very exploit they used," he said.
And in practice, Das added, "some firms still treat security as an afterthought."
"From my experience, teams often prioritize shipping fast over building secure systems and until that changes, the space will remain vulnerable," Das said.

News of the Day 6/11/25: AI
Paywall free.
More seriously, from the NY Times:
"For Some Recent Graduates, the A.I. Job Apocalypse May Already Be Here" (Paywall Free)
You can see hints of this in the economic data. Unemployment for recent college graduates has jumped to an unusually high 5.8 percent in recent months, and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York recently warned that the employment situation for these workers had “deteriorated noticeably.” Oxford Economics, a research firm that studies labor markets, found that unemployment for recent graduates was heavily concentrated in technical fields like finance and computer science, where A.I. has made faster gains. [...] Using A.I. to automate white-collar jobs has been a dream among executives for years. (I heard them fantasizing about it in Davos back in 2019.) But until recently, the technology simply wasn’t good enough. You could use A.I. to automate some routine back-office tasks — and many companies did — but when it came to the more complex and technical parts of many jobs, A.I. couldn’t hold a candle to humans. That is starting to change, especially in fields, such as software engineering, where there are clear markers of success and failure. (Such as: Does the code work or not?) In these fields, A.I. systems can be trained using a trial-and-error process known as reinforcement learning to perform complex sequences of actions on their own. Eventually, they can become competent at carrying out tasks that would take human workers hours or days to complete.
I've been hearing my whole life how automation was coming for all our jobs. First it was giant robots replacing big burly men on factory assembly lines. Now it seems to be increasingly sophisticated bits of code coming after paper-movers like me. I'm not sure we're there yet, quite, but the NYT piece does make a compelling argument that we're getting close.
The real question is, why is this a bad thing? And the obvious answer is people need to support themselves, and every job cut is one less person who can do that. But what I really mean is, if we can get the outputs we need to live well with one less person having to put in a day's work to get there, what does it say about us that we haven't worked out a way to make that a good thing?
Put another way, how come we haven't worked out a better way to share resources and get everyone what they need to thrive when we honestly don't need as much labor-hours for them to "earn" it as we once did?
I don't have the solution, but if some enterprising progressive politician wants to get on that, they could do worse. I keep hearing how Democrats need bold new ideas directed to helping the working class.

The twink and twunk duo. They're close acquaintances/casual friends at best.
Mini bios and fun notes below the cut:
Tenai is a Jedi Shadow who likes to be left to their own devices and who generally doesn't like people. People generally oblige, since they're not al that likeable anyway. Tenai's good at playing a character though, and so when they have to, they can be sweet a honey and twice as smooth. Maybe it's why they're so unpleasant when they're allowed to be authentic. If one were to make the effort to get to know Tenai and be let into their own little world, one would find an unexpected soft side to them. Tenai is full of pondering phylosophies and odd little quirks that they themself have a hard time explaining. When they were brought out of their Shadow work for the war, they were very displeased, but recognized the importance of all hands on deck- the other Shadows could live without them just fine. Taking command of the 407th Recon Corp was a difficult affair, both for Tenai due to their lack of experience, and for the clones who were met with this rude little gremlin who keeps appearing ominously from dark corners instead of a regal jedi. They made it work though, and the late Marshal Commander Kibo had been too much of a tenacious sweetheart not to befriend. Tenai Tasiko is now one of the Jedi Shadows still helping out with GAR matters. They've grown restless from sitting around during peacetime, which is really quite un-Jedi like. Yes, this bothers them greatly. They've had a number of crisises from it.
Ishan Ri got the job in the GAR intelligence division not really of his own accord. His father was friends of an officer there and a firm believer that working as a librarian was NOT the right career path. Ishan's brief stint as a research/data analyst for his country government looked fine on a resume, and during wartime, you take any hand that you can get, especially if that hand is recommended by someone already working for you. Ishan stayed at the job partly for the pay, but also because he found himself finding a real sense of purpose in it, feeling like they were really helping people by providing intel. It was during his second year as an employee that the war ended. He kept the job to help with the post-war cleanup of slave empires and crime syndicates still operating in Republic space. It's during one of these cleanup missions that he meets Fives, an ARC Lieutenant of the recently founded 501st SOF Unit.
You'd think Tenai would be one of those gatekeeping emo indie music enjoyers, but if asked about what they listen to, they will go on a long explanation about how their chosen favourites are the best and how everyone should listen to them. They're a huge techno fan and a connaisseur of weirdly ethereal rap music. No one who asks Tenai about the type of music that they listen to expects this. If they were in a modern AU they would just wear a hoodie and a cozy sweater everyday no matter the weather. 8 times out of 10 there's a sleeveless turtleneck underneath because those rock. They're not particularly attached to their hair since they have to dye and cut it when doing undercover work that requires it, but they do take care of it as best as they can.
Ishan listens to pretty much any genre. It's just as likely to hear him rock out to agressive punk as it is to see him stare into the distance while Sufjan Stevens plays. Would know a lot of Just Dance choreographies only because Just Dance is fun and was Something To Do at house parties. The type to hyperfixate on singers/bands, do NOT ask him about these unless you're ready to listen for two hours (this is usually how asking Ishan questions goes honestly. The guy can talk if prompted). Very cozy modern librarian type of vibe. Think less messy version of Jon Archivist.

4. Understanding Real-World Issues Whether it's inflation, unemployment, or climate change, economics plays a central role. A BSc economics course empowers students to study these global challenges, understand their root causes, and evaluate possible solutions.
What Does the BSc Economics Curriculum Include?
While the exact syllabus may vary by institution, a BSc economics program typically includes:
Microeconomic Theory
Macroeconomic Theory
Mathematical Methods for Economics
Statistics for Economists
Econometrics
Development Economics
Public Economics
International Trade
Environmental Economics
Financial Economics
Some modern programs, like those at innovative institutions such as Vinayaka Mission’s School of Economics and Public Policy (VSEP), go a step further by integrating courses in data science, R programming, and policy simulation. These additions make graduates not only knowledgeable in theory but also skilled in tools used in real-world decision-making.
The Future After BSc Economics
Graduates of BSc economics have a wide array of career options:
1. Corporate Sector Jobs Roles such as business analyst, data analyst, financial planner, and economist are commonly filled by BSc economics graduates. Companies appreciate the analytical rigor and data fluency that this degree cultivates.
2. Government and Policy Work Opportunities in planning commissions, government think tanks, and international institutions like the UN and World Bank await those interested in public service.
3. Research and Academia For those inclined towards research, think tanks, or teaching, BSc economics is the first step toward postgraduate and doctoral studies in economics or public policy.
4. Entrepreneurship and Innovation Understanding market dynamics, consumer behavior, and pricing strategies is critical for startups. A BSc economics background is invaluable for entrepreneurial ventures.
How to Choose the Right College for BSc Economics?
When selecting a college or university for BSc economics, consider the following:
Faculty expertise and academic reputation
Curriculum structure and modern updates
Opportunities for research and internships
Industry tie-ups and placement record
Campus life and learning environment
Institutions like VSEP are redefining economics education by blending core theory with modern applications. With exposure to real-world policy labs and data-based learning, students graduate as job-ready professionals.

How to Build a Strong Resume for Biotech & Bioinformatics Jobs
f you’re aiming for a career in biotechnology or bioinformatics, your resume is your first impression on recruiters. A strong resume should highlight your technical skills, problem-solving abilities, and industry expertise in a clear and structured way.
In this guide, you’ll learn how to create a powerful resume tailored for biotech and bioinformatics jobs — helping you stand out and land interviews faster.
Resume for Biotech & Bioinformatics
1.Why Resume Matters:- Recruiters in biotech and bioinformatics receive hundreds of resumes daily, but they only spend a few seconds scanning each one. Your resume should:
✅ Clearly showcase your skills ✅ Highlight relevant experience ✅ Demonstrate technical expertise ✅ Be easy to read and scan
An optimized resume increases your chances of getting noticed and moving forward in the hiring process.
**2. Choosing the Right Resume Format **The structure of your resume matters. Pick the best format based on your experience level and career goals:
a) Reverse Chronological Format (Best for Most Candidates) ✔ Lists your most recent experience first ✔ Preferred by recruiters & Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) ✔ Best for professionals with relevant experience in biotech or bioinformatics
b) Functional Format (Best for Career Changers & Recent Grads) ✔ Focuses on skills over work history ✔ Helps showcase transferable skills ✔ Best if you’re switching industries or have limited experience
c) Combination Format (Best for Experienced Professionals) ✔ Mix of chronological and functional formats ✔ Showcases both skills and work experience ✔ Ideal for professionals with diverse backgrounds
💡 Best Practice: If you’re applying for biotech or bioinformatics jobs, the reverse chronological format is the safest choice. **
Essential Sections for a Biotech & Bioinformatics Resume** a) Contact Information Include: ✔ Full Name ✔ Phone Number ✔ Professional Email (avoid unprofessional addresses like [email protected]) ✔ LinkedIn Profile (if applicable) ✔ Portfolio or GitHub (for bioinformatics roles)
b) Professional Summary (Your Elevator Pitch) Your professional summary is a 2–3 sentence overview of your expertise and achievements.
💡 Example: “Bioinformatics analyst with 3+ years of experience in genomic data analysis, Python scripting, and machine learning applications in biotech. Passionate about leveraging computational models to drive biological insights and innovation.”
c) Key Skills Section (Hard & Soft Skills) Biotech and bioinformatics jobs require a mix of technical and soft skills. List them clearly so hiring managers can quickly see your expertise.
Hard Skills (Technical Skills) 🔹 Programming Languages: Python, R, Perl, SQL 🔹 Bioinformatics Tools: BLAST, Bioconductor, GATK, NCBI databases 🔹 Lab Techniques: PCR, CRISPR, Western Blot, ELISA 🔹 Genomic Analysis: Next-Generation Sequencing (NGS), Genome Assembly 🔹 Machine Learning & Data Science: TensorFlow, Pandas, NumPy 🔹 Databases: MySQL, PostgreSQL, Hadoop
Soft Skills ✔ Problem-solving & critical thinking ✔ Communication & teamwork ✔ Project management ✔ Attention to detail
d) Work Experience (Show Your Impact) List your work experience in reverse chronological order with: ✔ Job Title ✔ Company Name ✔ Dates of Employment ✔ Key Achievements (Use Bullet Points & Metrics)
💡 Example: Bioinformatics Scientist XYZ Biotech Solutions, Boston, MA (Jan 2020 — Present)
Developed machine learning algorithms to analyze large genomic datasets Optimized NGS data pipelines, improving efficiency by 20% Published research findings in peer-reviewed journals Pro Tip: Use action verbs (developed, optimized, analyzed) and quantifiable achievements (20% efficiency increase) to make your resume stand out.
e) Education (Keep It Concise & Relevant) List your academic background in reverse chronological order:
🎓 Master’s in Bioinformatics — Harvard University (2018–2020) 🎓 Bachelor’s in Biotechnology — University of California, San Diego (2014–2018)
💡 If you’re a recent graduate, include relevant coursework or research projects.
f) Certifications & Training (Boost Your Credibility) Adding relevant certifications can set you apart from other candidates.
✔ Certified Bioinformatics Analyst (CBIA) ✔ Data Science & Machine Learning Certification (Coursera, Udemy, etc.) ✔ Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) Certification
g) Projects & Research (Showcase Your Work) If you’ve worked on relevant projects, highlight them here.
💡 Example: Project: AI for Cancer Genomics
Developed an AI model to classify cancer subtypes based on gene expression Used Python & TensorFlow for data analysis and prediction modeling h) Publications & Conferences (If Applicable) If you’ve contributed to scientific journals or spoken at biotech conferences, include them.
💡 Example:
Doe, J., Smith, A. (2021). “AI-Powered Bioinformatics for Disease Prediction.” Nature Biotechnology.
Optimize Your Resume for ATS (Applicant Tracking Systems) Most biotech companies use ATS software to filter resumes before a recruiter sees them.
How to Beat ATS & Get Noticed? ✅ Use standard section headings (Work Experience, Skills, Education) ✅ Include keywords from the job description ✅ Submit as a PDF or Word document (to ensure readability) ✅ Avoid images, graphics, or fancy fonts **
Tailor Your Resume for Each Job Application** A generic resume won’t work — customize your resume for each job by:
✔ Matching skills and experience to the job description ✔ Using keywords from the job post ✔ Highlighting relevant research and certifications
💡 Example: If a job description mentions “Python scripting and NGS analysis”, make sure those skills are prominently listed in your resume. **
Resume Length & Formatting Tips** 📌 Keep it 1–2 pages (unless you’re highly experienced) 📌 Use professional fonts (Arial, Calibri, Times New Roman, size 11–12) 📌 Maintain consistent formatting (bullet points, spacing, headers) **
Don’t Forget a Strong Cover Letter** A well-written cover letter helps explain: ✔ Why you’re interested in the job ✔ How your skills align with the company’s goals ✔ What makes you a unique candidate
Keep it short & personalized (250–400 words).
Final Thoughts: Your Next Steps Building a biotech or bioinformatics resume requires technical knowledge, strategic formatting, and customization. By following these tips, you’ll increase your chances of landing interviews and advancing your career.
🚀 Next Steps: 🔹 Revise your resume 🔹 Optimize it with industry keywords 🔹 Start applying for biotech & bioinformatics jobs!

Saudi Arabia Manpower Market: Opportunities and Challenges
Introduction
What does a man imagine whenever he hears the term "Saudi Arabia"? Is probably gigantic desert territories, rich heritage, or even a shift in economic direction since Vision 2030? But behind it all, its workforce-the lifeblood of any prosperous economy. It is an important step to grasp the manpower landscape of Saudi Arabia for the business as much as it is for an individual looking to tap into that potential. So what is next? What are the challenges? Let's get into it.
1. Overview of Saudi Arabia's Workforce
This is replicated by the large number of expatriates in the Saudi labor force. The population is over 35 million, and half of that number falls within the labor force. The government is very proactive in reducing the unemployment level of Saudis but has to weigh that with the expatriate workers who bring in the much-needed skills.
2. Current Employment Trends
The Saudi job market is evolving. The new trend now is in the use of technology, renewable energy, and tourism, which are sectors with the execution of Vision 2030. Companies are hiring locally more than ever before. They have a keen interest in the development of skills and training the nationals of Saudi Arabia.
3. Government Initiatives: Vision 2030
Vision 2030 is a game-changer for the Saudi manpower market. This ambitious plan aims to diversify the economy, reduce dependency on oil, and create new job opportunities for Saudis. Programs like Nitaqat, which mandates specific quotas for Saudi employment in private firms, are pivotal.
4. Role of Expatriates in Saudi’s Manpower
