Russia Vs US: Who Holds The Ice In The Arctic Fleet Race?
Tumblr media

US Vice President JD Vance said the US needs to make sure it's leading in the Arctic to outperform Russia.
Is this viable given the state of the US Arctic Fleet compared to Russia's?
Arctic Fleet of Russia
The Arctic missions-capable Russian icebreaker fleet is the world’s largest and currently includes 42 vehicles, among them eight nuclear and 34 diesel-electric ones.
These comprise five heavy nuclear icebreakers of Project 22220 (the Arktika, the Ural, the Sibir, the Yakutia, the Chukotka) with a capacity of 60 MW each, as well as the world's most powerful non-nuclear icebreaker Viktor Chernomyrdin (25 MW).
Adding to Russia’s assertiveness in the Arctic is the Russian Northern Fleet, which includes the Ilya Muromets heavy duty icebreaker, the large anti-submarine ship Vice-Admiral Kulakov, and the large landing ship Alexander Otrakovsky.
Also able to operate in the Arctic are Russian nuclear submarines of Borei class, each capable of carrying 16 Bulava ballistic missiles, and Yasen-class nuclear submarines with Onyx, Kalibr, and Zircon missiles.
Arctic Fleet of The US
The Polar Star remains the US’ only operational heavy icebreaker capable of tackling Arctic ice. The medium icebreaker Healy has been out of action in the Arctic.
Some naval surface ships, like Arleigh Burke-class destroyers and Ticonderoga-class cruisers can navigate the Arctic.
Nuclear-powered attack submarines of Los Angeles-, Virginia-and Seawolf-class are capable of navigating under the Arctic ice.
Referring to the US being “severely outnumbered” in terms of icebreakers compared to Russia, Gregory Guillot, the commander of US Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command, admitted that it “does limit our freedom of maneuver in that [Arctic] region."

The roughly 700 Marines recently ordered to deploy to Los Angeles have not yet completed training on less-than-lethal weapons and training on the Standing Rules for Use of Force, which governs the use of force for military personnel within the United States, said a spokesperson for U.S. Northern Command, or NORTHCOM. It is not yet clear when the Marines will complete the training, or when they will join NORTHCOM’s Task Force 51, which is overseeing U.S. troops responding to the ongoing immigration protests in Los Angeles, the spokesperson said.

NORAD head said Chinese aircraft may start operating near the US this year
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 13/03/2024 - 09:00 in Military
U.S. Air Force General Gregory M. Guillot, the new head of the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) and the U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM), warned lawmakers on March 12 that Chinese warplanes could start operating near the U.S. Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ) as early as this year.
“Fortunately, we have not yet seen Chinese aircraft operating near our air defense identification zones, but I think this will happen as early as this year,” Guillot told the House Armed Services Committee in his first testimony in Congress since he took office as NORAD and Commander of NORTHCOM in February. "This shows a general concern I have about China's growing capacity, not only with aircraft, but also with ships and even submarines capable of moving further away from China and getting closer to our coasts."
youtube
Air Defense Identification Zones are buffer regions that extend beyond territorial borders, covering airspace hundreds of kilometers from the coast that nations use to track approaching aircraft. NORAD tracks aircraft using a network of satellites, ground and air radars and combat aircraft, and all aircraft entering or leaving U.S. airspace from abroad must be identified in advance.
Russian fighters and bombers regularly enter the U.S. ADIZ, without entering U.S. or Canadian airspace. Occasionally, NORAD sends fighters to intercept these aircraft and escort them out of ADIZ. In February, NORAD reported three occurrences of Russian aircraft operating in the Alaskan ADIZ.
Tumblr media
Russian aircraft then enter the Alaskan ADIZ.
The entry of Chinese aircraft into the US ADIZ, however, would mark an expansion of the reach of the People's Liberation Army. In recent years, the ELP has entered ADIZ around the island of Taiwan hundreds of times, sometimes sending dozens of planes in a single day, in movements that observers warn that they may be probing Taiwan's defenses or inducing them to a feeling of complacency.
U.S. and China aircraft have been dealing with each other in the Indo-Pacific - the Pentagon revealed in 2023 that Chinese aircraft have made more than 180 risky interceptions of U.S. aircraft in the last two years, surpassing the total incidents of the previous decade, increasing concerns about China's unpredictable and increasingly provocative behavior.
At the same time, Chinese surveillance balloons entered U.S. airspace five times in recent years, with the Pentagon losing several at the time they occurred, before one of them crossed the entire U.S. continental territory in January 2023, eventually being shot down after a few days.
Tumblr media
The Chinese balloon shot down in January 2023.
Guillot told lawmakers that NORAD has taken steps to better identify objects such as spy balloons that may have gone unnoticed in the past, filling the "domain knowledge gap" highlighted by his predecessor, General Glen D. VanHerck.
"First of all, my predecessor... advised that the radar sensitivities be adjusted, which would allow better detection of objects of low cross-sectional section of the radar, slow movements and high altitude," said Guillot, adding that the system, however, introduces some confusion due to the receipt of more data.
Tumblr media
"Secondly, when our operators see intermittent hits that in the past would generally be attributed to the weather or other phenomena that would cause an inconsistent hit, they now continue to track them with more care and consistency to ensure that it is not a balloon or some other phenomenon," Guillot said.
"And the third is a better recognition of dominance among the other combatant commands. As we get the JADC2... the ability to share data from one combatant command to another, instead of stopping on a black line on a map that divides the regions, we can now share that information electronically in a transparent way to increase our consciousness even further away from our backs.”
Tumblr media
JADC2 sensor network.
Still, Guillot said that the surveillance systems of NORAD and NORTHCOM need more investments, calling radar beyond the horizon (OTHR) and the long-range discrimination radar (LRDR) as their "main priorities".
The Missile Defense Agency said in January that an LRDR missile defense system in Alaska is almost complete and will start operating at the end of this year. Both the U.S. and Canadian military have invested in the OTHR, with the U.S. Air Force planning to build four OTHR for NORAD and NORTHCOM. Guillot added that Alaska will have an OTHR. As the process is still at an early stage, he stressed that keeping the program on track is essential.
“This would give us capability against cruise missiles, traditional airstrips, as well as hypersonic weapons,” Guillot said. "Keeping this program on track is NORTHCOM's number one priority, due to the large capacity it would bring."
Tumblr media
The Long-Range Discrimination Radar (LRDR) at the Clear Space Force Station in Alaska includes a multiface radar designed to provide search, tracking and discrimination capability in support of internal defense. The LRDR complex also includes mission control facilities, power plant and maintenance facilities.
Guillot added that hypersonic weapons pose a greater threat than intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBMs) due to their ability to fly at lower altitudes and maneuverability.
“The hypersonic weapon is probably the most destabilizing weapon we face now,” Guillot said. "They shorten the detection time and the fact that they do not follow a traditional ballistic track means that they are very unpredictable and the area of uncertainty is huge, based on their speed and manoeuvrability. That's what makes them a challenge not only to detect, but also to track and eventually defeat."

Destroyer USS Cole Headed to Southern Border, Replacing USS Gravely Heather Mongilio – June 6, 2025 4:29 PM The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Cole (DDG-67) arrives in port for Fleet Week Fort Lauderdale, Apr. 22, 2025. US Navy Photo USS Cole (DDG-67) left Mayport, Fla., on Thursday as the latest Navy ship to participate in the Trump administration’s border mission. Cole will replace USS Gravely (DDG-107), which sailed to the southern border shortly after returning home from its deployment in the Red Sea. Cole is the second ship this week to head to the southern border to replace ships finishing their U.S. Northern Command mission. Gravely will return home to Norfolk, Va., – also Cole’s homeport – on Monday, according to a Navy news release. While Cole will support NORTHCOM’s mission, it will deploy under U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command/U.S. Fourth Fleet. It will have an embarked Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment (LEDET), as did Gravely. The embarked LEDET can perform vessel boardings and searches and seizures in both U.S. and international waters, according to the Navy release. “With LEDET’s tactical expertise guiding interdiction efforts, the Cole will harness its advanced surveillance systems and mobility to locate and intercept suspect vessels, effectively extending Coast Guard authority through naval power to enhance maritime security operations. This collaboration ensures a robust, legally empowered response to maritime threats, strengthening U.S. border protection efforts,” reads the release. Gravely deployed March 15, USNI News previously reported. It was one of the first destroyers sent to the waters around the Gulf coast. P-8A Poseidons maritime surveillance planes from Naval Air Station Jacksonville, Fla., supported Gravely and its LEDET. The “Swamp Foxes” of Helicopter Maritime Squadron (HSM) 74 also embarked on Gravely. At the end of May, Gravely and its LEDET seized approximately 860 pounds of illegal drugs from a vessel in the Caribbean Sea, USNI News previously reported. USS Sampson (DDG-102) deployed Tuesday from San Diego to support NORTHCOM’s mission, USNI News previously reported. It’s relieving USS Charleston (LCS-18) and also has an embarked LEDET. “U.S. Northern Command (NORTHCOM) recently conducted a series of tests known as the Global Information Dominance Experiments, or GIDE, which combined global sensor networks, artificial intelligence (AI) systems, and cloud computing resources in an attempt to "achieve information dominance" and "decision-making superiority." According to NORTHCOM leadership, the AI and machine learning tools tested in the experiments could someday offer the Pentagon a robust “ability to see days in advance," meaning it could predict the future with some reliability based on evaluating patterns, anomalies, and trends in massive data sets. While the concept sounds like something out of Minority Report, the commander of NORTHCOM says this capability is already enabled by tools readily available to the Pentagon.
General Glen VanHerck, Commander of NORTHCOM and North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), told reporters at the Pentagon this week that this was the third test of GIDE, conducted in conjunction with all 11 combatant commands “collaborating in the same information space using the same exact capabilities.” The experiment largely centered around contested logistics and information advantage, two cornerstones of the new warfighting paradigm recently proposed by the Vice Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. A full transcript of VanHerck's press briefing is available online.’

Are we going into martial law

“To some observers, a deployment of troops under the Insurrection Act might look and feel very much like martial law,” the Brennan Center says. 'Like a puppet': Trump's subtle body language clues in post impeachment speechĬonfronting new photos emerge as US braces for chaosĪccording to New York University’s Brennan Center for Justice, martial law has no established definition, however it is possible to deploy the military under the Insurrection Act. 'Take hostages': Disturbing new claims about Trump supporters in US riots “We are going to see martial law declared.” This is coming straight from my contacts in DC, y’all,” the pastor claimed on Facebook. Rape and wanton murder were practiced by some of the armies in Europe during the recent war at the instance of their officers, as report has it, and the courts. “I’m talking about the next two or three days - we’re looking at a martial law being declared. So, while you’re not allowed to go outside and make a living to support your family, the state will hammer you with a bankruptcy-level fine if you fail to obey. These restrictions are in place in Australia for at least six weeks. Plus it’s never been done over the entire nation. Sure Biden can promote it but he can’t order it. Generally, the institution of martial law contemplates some use of military force. Answer (1 of 3): Pretty much Congress will have to agree to it. Curiously, according to the Supreme Court, the term martial law carries no precise meaning (Duncan v. Just before Trump was impeached for a second time for inciting an insurrection, Wade McKinney, a pastor from Texas, alleged anonymous sources told him Trump would declare martial law. The penalty for violating any of the unscientific, made-up-out-of-thin-air new laws in Victoria is 4,957. Martial law is an extreme measure used to control society during war or periods of civil unrest or chaos. The post Military on alert over Trump’s martial law threat: ‘The craziness is unprecedented’ appeared first on TheGrio.Over the past few days there has been speculation Trump would invoke martial law, which would mean military would temporarily be in control. Martial law involves the temporary substitution of military authority for civilian rule and is usually invoked in time of war, rebellion, or natural disaster. F-22 slaughters 'high altitude object' over Alaska, with still uncertain origins
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 02/10/23 - 19:07 in Military
A U.S. Air Force F-22 Raptor shot down a high-altitude object off the coast of Alaska on February 10 by order of President Joe Biden, authorities announced - but unlike the Chinese surveillance balloon that was shot down after transiting through the continental US last week, the origins of this new object and its purpose remain obscure.
The spokesman for the National Security Council, John F. Kirby described the object as unmanned, based on observations from fighter pilots who ran to find it, and said it was "approximately the size of a small car", with no indication of any surveillance payload or control or self-propulsion capacity.
Tumblr media
The object was flying at approximately 40,000 feet, Kirby said, representing a danger to civil air traffic and demanding that it be shot down. He was first detected on the night of February 9 and the fighter pilots made an effort to observe him, Kirby said.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media
At least one more flight was sent the next morning, and the object was shot down in the northeastern part of Alaska, Kirby said, landing in frozen waters in the Arctic Circle.
Tumblr media
In a separate briefing, the Pentagon press secretary, Brig. General Patrick S. Ryder said that an F-22 from the Elmendorf-Richardson Joint Base in Alaska fired an AIM-9X missile to take down the air vehicle, which he described as being the size of a car. Neither Ryder nor Kirby specified whether it was a balloon or perhaps a drone of some kind. Regardless, it was shot down by the same type of aircraft and missile as the Chinese surveillance balloon off the coast of South Carolina on February 4.
Ryder also confirmed many of the same details as Kirby, adding that the operation was led by the US Northern Command Alaskan Command, assisted by the Alaska Air National Guard, Federal Aviation Administration and FBI. NORTHCOM has started recovery operations.

US Navy Photo A West Coast destroyer departed on Tuesday as the latest ship to deploy in support of operations in U.S. Northern Command, reads a statement from U.S. Fleet Forces. USS Sampson (DDG-102) left from San Diego to relieve the Independence-class Littoral Combat Ship USS Charleston (LCS-18), “continuing the Navy’s role in maritime operations that support national security priorities,” reads the statement. “The deployment is part of the Department of Defense’s support to national objectives along the U.S. southern border, following Presidential directives and ongoing interagency efforts to improve border security and homeland defense.” Sampson, like Charleston, has a Coast Guard law enforcement detachment during its deployment. Embarked LEDETs have been a centerpiece of Navy support for the overall anti-trafficking effort in U.S. Southern Command for decades as part of Campaign Martillo. “As a surface combatant assigned to Destroyer Squadron 9, Sampson brings robust multi-mission capabilities to the task of defending U.S. sovereignty and supporting homeland defense operations in coordination with USNORTHCOM,” reads a statement. Destroyers from both coasts have been dispatched to the border to support anti-trafficking and immigration operations. Last week in the Caribbean Sea, USS Gravely (DDG-107) and LEDET 401 seized $13.5 million in cocaine, USNI News reported.
