Do I think the US Open’s choice to all but eradicate the mixed doubles grand slam is abhorrent and sets back actual doubles players dramatically (not to mention financially) in their careers? Yes.

Am I also excited for all these mixed doubles pairings that have just been announced? Absolutely!

I’m rooting for Sara Errani and Andrea (actual dream team) but I also love the Jasmine Paolini and Lorenzo Musetti pairing (look at me backing only Italians, why)

(Kinda sad that they’re doing this instead of letting professional mixed doubles pairs compete but damn it’s exciting, ngl…)

You know what would have been a better idea: having these new singles-stars double teams play actual doubles partners as exhibition matches before the tournament and then still holding the usual doubles grand slam. This way:

A) the US Open can bring more attention to doubles players before the beginning of the tournament and help them gain a wider audience

B) The singles players can get practice on the courts in conditions more similar to their tournament matches

C) the doubles players don’t lose out on the advantage winning a grand slam can bring both in terms of their careers and financially.

That way we all still get to watch big names try and figure their way through a doubles match and wider audiences could potentially find a new love for doubles tennis. Win win.
