finally painted his new skin

NOTE: i've been binging his videos for the past few days, since i've been a bit sick and they're also good to watch in the background. it's crazy that i haven't drawn him properly in 5 years, esp since i had a biiiiig fixation on his vids, lol!! i rmb bailing on my friends in vc just to watch his new eps, haha. but then, ykno, i was like "i need more hermitcraft!!" and watched EVERY hermit at some point which was way too much laksdksahdsa. right now i'm only binging cub's perspective. it's fun to see that he's literally the same guy he was 5 years ago. i mean, duh, obviously, but even small things like his obsession with unicode symbols haven't waned, which i find quite cute.

ANYWAYS!! i gave him some piercings cuz i saw this super cool cub cosplayer (@/desolate.sand on ig) with piercings and i was like, "actually. yes. 100%".

i actually wonder if anyone still remembers me from this community. and if someone does, i hope it's cuz of me talking about cub way too much LOL

この頃のWindowsというか通信環境は今と比べてあまりにも貧弱（電気ないから狼煙でビットのON／OFFを表現してた。だから頑張っても5.75ボー（狼煙や鐘はビット操作ではなく変調操作なのでbpsではなくBaudが適当）がベストエフォートとかそんな感じ）で、画像はおろかテキストの送信でもものすごく時間がかかっていた。しかも日本語は2バイトコードだから余計に大変。山の中継所や平地のお寺でJISコード変換表片手に狼煙や鐘で通信するのは本当に大変だったと当時の文書にも残されているくらい

だから1パケット当たりの情報量をできるだけ圧縮、か��パケットの大きさをそろえる必要があったんだ

そこで少ない文字数で相手に情報を電鉄する手段として「ハイク（Hyper Architect Internet Kind of Unicode／高度な設計によるインターネットにおける世界標準コードの種類）」が開発されたんだよね。エンコード／デコードをある程度人間の感性に依存することで、17文字35バイト（1バイト分はチェックサム4ビットとEOF4ビット）という画期的な軽量パケットで回線の負荷を減らすことができたんだよね。特に本懐を遂げた武士が最後に親族などに告げる遺言状「辞世の句」は俳句の機能を活かした速達通信プロトコルだったんだ

その後のブロードバンド化で俳句の文化は廃れたけど、今でも愛好家は多いんだ

通信伝達手段で狼煙はともかく鐘を四六時中ならしたらやかましいと思うかもしれないけど、当時の和尚は高調波で鐘をたたくことができたからね。可聴範囲を超えた音を余裕で出せたのよ。だからその気になれば100ボーくらい出せたという説もあるけど、山越えの際に狼煙に変換するとき速度が合わないとハンドシェイクできないから5.75ボーで抑えていたそうな

#1182: the way flag emoji are encoded in Unicode is very complex. a codepoint is one point (one number) on Unicode's one-million-large table (17 * 2^16 if you must know) that encodes a single "characters". the reason that's in quotes is because it's a little more complicated. some flags are stored with a single codepoint, like ⛳. simple as. national flags, like 🇬🇧, are composed of two codepoints. there are 26 "regional indicator" characters that, when used in pairs, are intended to render as flags. often they just show small-caps letters separately (like i'm seeing in Notepad right now) (because it's really two characters) but properly they're flags.

but there are a lot of places in the world and they all want a flag. for places without ISO-3166 codes, the black flag is used, which i can't actually put here without messing up the rest of my text. everything that comes after this flag is counted, until the cancel tag is found. the flag of Scotland (🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿), for example, has five letter tags ("GBSCT"), so it takes seven backspaces to delete it in Notepad, and it contributes that number too towards the character count of this post. but there are more flags: the white flag 🏳 is used to make things like the pride flag 🏳️‍🌈 by combining the rainbow emoji, for example. to glue these two perfectly normal emoji together, Unicode's equivalent of PVA is used: the "variation selector 16" and the "zero-width joiner" (your guess is as good as mine). this one therefore takes four strikes of the delete key to remove (or two on most platforms).

geez louise ok i just need to get these thoughts out of my head lol. stream-of-consciousness rambling about Secret Boss "Someone" to follow

gaster or not, i think the idea of Someone being an "insider" to the dark worlds makes a little more intuitive sense than them being a Lightner (or shapeless fourth-dimensional entity, i guess). the simplest answer to "how were they contacting Darkners before the Fountains were open?" is, well, Someone themself was a Darkner. they already lived on that layer of reality.

beyond that, i think there's a certain clarity of motivation to be found if we take the stance that they're a Darkner rather than something else. consider the Someone’s M.O. — give these underdogs knowledge of what lies beyond, help them transcend their limitations, then leave them to take fate for themselves; this reads to me like an effort (however misguided) of liberation. why would Someone want to do this? maybe because they empathize with them -- and/or, maybe, they stumbled into some kind of eldritch knowledge themself, and were desperate to share it, to have someone else understand what they did.

if we do want to bring in gaster as a possibility for Someone… fuck it. let's say his "object" really is the font Wingdings. why, from a watsonian perspective, Font Darkners would manifest as skeletons is… unclear… but let's go with it for now. Wingdings is a digital dingbats font that sparked confusion, misunderstanding, and even conspiracy theories among users. It's always been a misfit among common typefaces, and over time its usefulness as an ideographic system has been challenged by easier and more available alternatives, including, of course, the implementation of Unicode emoji. contrast this with comic sans and papyrus, which, despite the chagrin of design literati, have historically been widely-used and beloved due to their availability, versatility, and ease of use. by this logic, wingdings fits the profile of a secret boss, designed for a purpose that left him underutilized and discarded.

no real ideas as to how he would have acquired The Knowledge or whatever, aside from ENTRY NUMBER 17 seeming to allude vaguely to opening a Neo Dark Fountain, a process that i guess could expose the planar nature of reality, like he figured if he can go down then maybe he can go up too, or something. listen i have no fucking clue ok. in any case he certainly seems like the type to go digging for it in the first place, Mad Scientist, etc., and maybe it's in his nature as a Darkner designed for communication to feel a need to share it. an obtuse, near-unintelligible font struggling to be understood. or something. lol

as to how gaster (and the brothers) would have "ascended" to the Light World… who knows lol.
