A few details i wasn’t able to get into the library fic that introduced the Avatar characters to Crossthicc! This was worldbuilding stuff I thought was interesting, but didn’t have room to put into the fic properly.

AVATAR STUFF

Suki is one of the daughters of Kyoshi, who rules a system of islands, and has inherited something of her size, power, and commanding attitude. The Kyoshi Islands are intended to be an analogue to Japan in some respects, and in particular Kyoshi’s daughters lead their own respective dynasties in service to Kyoshi, who is ultimately a Raava-blessed empress uniting them all as a daughter of Heaven.

The girls are considerably older than in canon, and the boys are more or less their canon ages but in a way to give them a different dynamic with the girls. Katara is the eldest child in her generation, with Sokka as her younger brother. Her dynamic with Aang is even more ‘skilled student winds up marrying his gifted mentor’, with a bit more emphasis on Katara being a heroine. The biggest shift is for Zuko; as Azula’s younger brother, he was never in the running for being Fire Lord and was a surplus child. Mai was more or less his bodyguard and they wound up falling for another as a bright spot in each other’s lives.

Way more AU as the cultures of Avatar go. Sun Warriors are still extant, groups such as the Foggy Swamp Tribe are all over the place. The Fire Nation is presently in a huge civil war between Azula and forces that follow Zuko, and Azula is actually more active as a leader than Ozai is; as it stands, the Fire Nation is basically like Warring States-era Japan, but with people who can breathe fire and ride dragons.

On that note, the Fire Lords are more or less just the Fire Sages as they originally were in canon; the Fire Lord is the leader of the Fire Sages, who ride dragons here and commune with them, and have enormous power over the Fire Nation’s people with this influence. Azula has taken over as hereditary right and the most powerful of the family, but Zuko has also earned the right and this has caused the civil war in question, with an unprecedented amount of nobles, warlords and influencers split between the two rather than the usual free for all.

The Air Nomads are mainly based off the people of ancient Mongolia, with Genghis Khan’s example being a pretty obvious one. The Air Nomads who live in this area are explicitly intended to be modeled after them. Yangchen herself is an analogue to the Khan, down to building an empire and unifying her people, and having a strict ‘insult my people and die horribly’ vibe. As a whole the Air Nomads are a lot more diverse than what we see in canon; Air Nomads like the monks we see in canon are still around, but they’re a specific set of clans who live in the mountains near the Southern Water Tribe and have established a monastary there. They support their life style by working out deals to control the wind for the benefit of their Water Tribe neighbors.

Bending here is marked by two things: becoming a giant hyper-curvy lady (as is the main rule in this AU when you become powerful), and physical mutations. Not like the mods used by other, but non-functional attributes such as crystalline skin for Earthbenders, icy body temperature for Waterbenders, blazing skin for Firebenders, and so on. It varies for each individual, gets more intense as they power up and the specific kind of mutation changes when they are bending different things, but all benders are obvious and easily spotted.

Size is linked to bending. The more powerful you are, the bigger. The inverse is true; if you’re bigger, you have bending powers. Characters who canonically have no bending ability but are big here (Mai, Suki, Asami and so on) are benders here, but have very low grade powers or extremely specialized skills. Suki is probably an Earthbender who can do minor tricks with soul to be immovable, Mai and Asami are firebenders (Mai does internal tricks with heat, Asami can bend lightning but ONLY lightning), and so on.

I usually avoid specific sizes, but I did measurements for a tricky line, and worked some things out. Katara is roughly about twenty feet tall here, an average man only going up to her knees. Toph may be about 30 or so while the other girls are smaller than Katara on average, ranging from 12 to 15 feet. Korra is the biggest at at least forty feet. She is very big!

Raava does not serially incarnate here, but instead bonds to multiple human hosts as they are born; the Avatar is thus not a singular entity but a soul fusion of many different people to previous ones and the other living ones, linked and boosted by Raava. Thus, Korra and Aang can be around at the same time, and she can be significantly older than him too. The other Avatars relevant to Aang (Kuruk, Kyoshi, Roku and Yangchen) are, of course, all alive and doing things, being important heroes and leaders.

The owl entity that is mentioned briefly near the end of the story is intended to be Wan Shi Tong, and the Great Library is a combination of his library and the idea of the Akashic Records from Mage: The Awakening. He’s not as anti-mortal as he is in canon, or at least, not allowed to act upon it due to the other powers in the Library. He is a spirit of the idea of knowledge and lore, and acts as a neutral figure within the library’s command.

Bending stuff. Here, bending is not hereditary (though it is dependant on cultural identity); rather, people commune with specific spirits after manifesting an elemental power at a young age. Everyon can use an element appropriate to their culture, though perhaps very limited, and some can commune directly with the spirits, earning their favor and gaining their powers, being physically transformed in some respect and gaining enormous amounts of power. These are like Benders from canon, but they explicitly sought it out. Animals like badger-moles and sky bison are linked to these spirits, too. (There are different ways of earning favor; some women might become hyper pregnant with powerful spirits, for example, and at the end of the pregnancy, transform into their new state and gain their powers. The REAL elemental blessing was inside them all along…!)

The Air Nomads are alive and well!

Aang is ethnically related to the northern Air Nomads who are based on the followers of Genghis Khan; Yangchen’s clans, here. However he was raised among the monastary monks near the Southern Water Tribe, where he met Katara when young and studied under her to learn Waterbending. His heritage carries no stigma, and while he has no concern about his actual family (it being an Air Nomad thing to raise children communally), he wants to know more about his birth-people and ancestral culture.

You may have noticed a reference to ‘red tornado spirits’ in regards to Aang’s tattoos. Double meaning here; Aang’s tattoos were originally based, from what I hear, on the DC robot hero Red Tornado’s markings, and thus the spirits who originally taught the first Air Nomads were related to the spirits that give Red Tornado life force. (It was either that or make Red Tornado this settings version of Tenzin. Still might do that, actually.)

Speaking of Tenzin, Aang and Katara’s children are around for sure, but doing their own thing during the events of this story.

NON AVATAR STUFF

Hermione here is based on my take on her in the fics I’ve written here and there. The other group mentioned in relation to her is intended to be her canonical friendship group, including Harry, Ron, Ginny, Luna and Neville, and possibly others. The Great Library may be Hogwarts, but the castle may exist elsewhere with the wizards and witches here being a specific group that wound up at the Library through a mishap.

Witches like Hermione grow bigger as they get more magically powerful, as generally goes in this AU.

Hermione is intended to be read as black/Afro-British (or a space future analogue) but I’m not sure I’m that great at conveying that in writing.

Hermione’s somewhere between Toph and Katara’s sizes. Smaller than 30 feet, bigger than 20 feet. She’s thicc, hyper busty, and big all over!

Hermione not speaking the language of the Avatar characters is based on a few plot points I’ve had in mind; linguistics in this AU is a serious matter with no ‘translator microbes’ or quick solutions to language barriers. Two of the most important would have been Zenyatta from Overwatch (here a full on magic user and Guru Pathik-analogue) and Scar from Fullmetal Alchemist (donated his brother’s teachings to the library, stayed there to study as a religious duty)

There was originally an in-universe lesson about how their world fits into the cosmology, but i couldn’t find a natural place to slot it in. In brief, they’re technically one of the mortal universes, but exist in a demi-realm deep within the realms of magic and swimming in spirits, so they’re not really connected to the mortal universes and unless you know what you’re doing, there’s no real way to get there. This universe is mainly empty but rich with magic, so it’s possible for people who find their way there to establish new worlds there.

DS920+ Specifications and Design

The Synology DS920+ is superficially identical to all the recent four-bay Synology devices, with a sleek black plastic exterior and distinctive bevel on all edges. Measuring 8.73 x 7.83 x 6.54 inches (223 x 199 x 166mm), it weighs 5lbs (2.25kg) without drives fitted.

Around the rear, you'll find dual Gigabit Ethernet ports, a USB3.0 port, and an eSATA connection. You'll probably want to save the USB port for use with an uninterruptible power supply. There's another USB3.0 port on the front of the device, useful for quickly plugging in an external disk that you need to pull files from.

The DS920+ uses the same toolless disk caddies that make fitting drives a breeze. But scratch beneath the surface and you'll find a few key differences to other models in the line-up.

Firstly, the internals. Fitted with a powerful quad-core 2GHz J4125 Intel Celeron CPU and 4GB of RAM, the 920+ can handle hardware transcoding of 4K video files, has virtualization support, and provides an AES-NI encryption engine for great performance when using secure folders. Synology states photo indexation as 25% faster than the previous generation DS918+ model.

Secondly, there's a lot of upgrade potential here for when you need to scale up.

On the underside of the device you'll find two m.2 SSD slots for NVMe caching drives. These can be used to significantly speed up random file operations.

Remove the drives and there's a single SO-DIMM memory upgrade slot tucked away just inside on the right. This can officially support up to a 4GB SO-DIMM module, which would give a total system memory potential of 8GB, and it's an inexpensive upgrade. I say "officially support" because many users have found higher memory modules are also recognized. The CPU lists 8GB as the maximum though, so anything beyond this may cause errors later down the line and isn't worth the risk; nor will Synology be able to support you if something goes wrong.

An eSATA port allows for connection to a drive expansion unit, such as the five-bay DX517. This adds potentially 80TB more. However, if you know you'll likely need more drives in the short term (and can afford it), purchasing a system with more built-in drive slots is always a better choice. The Synology NAS selector tool can help there. For most people, four bays is a good compromise. It allows for secure fault tolerance of a single disk, while still letting you take advantage of mixed drive sizes in a flexible Synology Hybrid RAID configuration.

Setting Up the DS920+

As with all of Synology's line-up, hardware installation and system setup are user-friendly and easy.

Starting with the hardware, you don't need any tools to install drives. Just pull out the drives, and pull off the plastic clips at the side. Slot the drive in, then push back the clips, and re-insert.

Once you've powered on the system, give it a moment, then navigate to find.synology.com from any desktop browser. This should find your new NAS, and you'll be guided through the initial set up. From there, you'll be greeted by the DiskStation Manager OS. It's a familiar-looking graphical environment that anyone who used Windows or Mac will feel at home with. You even get a start button in the top left.

Your first step should be to create a storage volume, which you can do using a helpful wizard after launching the Storage Manager. If you're new to Synology, or Networked Attached Storage in general, it's worth taking a moment to explain the Synology Hybrid RAID technology.

Synology Hybrid RAID

Hard drives can and do fail, and one of the biggest reasons to use a storage system with two or more drives is to allow for redundancy; that is, a drive can fail, and you won't lose any data. This called a Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks (or RAID, for short). Different types of RAID exist, but the one we're usually concerned with is RAID5, in which data blocks are spread across the disks, as well as a parity block. The parity block lets you recover data if any of the actual data blocks are lost.

With standard RAID levels, you need to use disks that are all the same size. This makes it expensive to start, and inflexible when it comes to upgrading. While you can swap out a drive for a larger one, the additional space will be of no benefit. The key difference is that Synology Hybrid RAID offers the same one disk fault tolerance (or two, if you're particularly risk-averse), but you can mix and match drive sizes. Regardless of what disks you're working with, the Synology software will intelligently optimize your array to use your available space most efficiently. Use the RAID calculator to estimate how much more space you'd get in an SHR configuration compared to standard RAID level.

Adding or upgrading a drive is also simple: the only rule is that the drive should be at least as big as the largest drive currently installed in the system. This makes upgrading your storage very budget-friendly.

Once you've created your storage volume, you can begin setting up shared folders from the Control Panel, and install software packages from Package Center.

Virtual Machine and Docker Support

There's a huge range of first and third-party software available, including the incredible Synology Moments, a local photo management solution that offers AI image analysis similar to Google Photos. One quick note is that if you're planning to install Plex, it's best to do so by downloading the latest version directly from Plex, and using the manual install process. The version on Synology Package Center lags behind.

In addition, both Synology's own Virtual Machine Manager hypervisor software and Docker are officially supported on the Plus series, opening up even more virtualized server systems to run on your home NAS.

Virtual Machine Manager works with a variety of operating systems—even Windows 10—so if you need a secure test environment for some software you're unsure of, you can simply boot it in a safely contained VM, all from within your browser. Of course, you won't be gaming on this or replacing your regular desktop anytime soon, but it's still useful to have a virtual machine running through a web browser anywhere on your network. Just add the ISO, spin up a new instance, and walk through the usual install process.

Docker is another beast entirely, and far too broad of a topic to delve into in this review if you're unfamiliar. Learn more about Docker in our guide, but the one-sentence summary would be: a Docker image is a virtual application that runs within a completely safe and sandboxed container. All you need to do is set some variables, point it to a data directory, and boot it up. Docker containers don't run an entire operating system, so they use significantly less memory than a full Virtual Machine. While you can typically run a single virtual machine at a time, you can have tens of Docker containers running 24/7 without impacting the performance of your system.

The range of Docker containers available is immense. If you've ever thought "wouldn't it be cool to run a whatever server at home?", chance are someone has made a Docker image already.

For instance, I had a Dockerized instance of Pi-Hole set up in ten minutes. It's a DNS server with built-in ad-blocking, originally designed to run on a Raspberry Pi. It was trivial to install and uses a minimal amount of memory, requiring only the creation of a few data directories and passing in some variables.

If you're looking at upgrading your home Wi-Fi to a Unifi enterprise system, you might be frustrated at the prospect of having to plug in a hardware dongle to act as the network controller. You'll be pleased to know that a Dockerized Unifi controller can be used instead.

Performance

Official performance figures for the DS920+ put total file throughput available at around 225MB/s read and slightly lower writer speeds, but this is when using the dual-Gigabit Ethernet ports in a link-aggregated configuration. In reality, this means any single Gigabit client device will achieve around 100 to 115MB/s, which our real-world tests confirmed.

Using faster drives will not improve this, and if you're on Wi-Fi rather than a wired Gigabit Ethernet connection, you may get even slower speeds. Ultimately, your network (and the Gigabit ports on the DS920+) are the limiting factor here when it comes to the performance of file access over the network—not the CPU, RAM, or speed of the drives you put in it.

NVMe Caching

One of the standout upgrade options on the 920+ is the two NVMe drive slots on the underside of the device. NVMe is a new generation of Solid State Drive (SSD) that looks a bit like a memory stick. But don't confuse their existence as yet another place to add storage drives to. The m.2 NVMe slots are limited to use as a caching system, and cannot be used to expand a storage volume.

A single NVMe drive allows you to create a read-only cache, while a pair of drives can be used for read-write caching. This creates a RAID1 array of SSDs to ensure there are no data errors in data being written back to your storage array from the cache.

We should note however that not everything you do on a NAS will benefit from NVMe caching. Specifically, it won't help with large sequential read/write operations, which are one of the main uses of a NAS. This also means it won't help with serving up video files for a Plex server. What they will help with is random read/write operations, such as those in a virtual machine, database, or other server package running on the NAS.

For this reason, it's difficult to measure actual performance gains from NVMe caching: simply copying files to and from the device would show no difference. Instead, if you have an SSD-cache capable device, I'd recommend opening up the Storage Manager -> SSD Cache -> SSD Cache Advisor to see if you might benefit, and what size cache drive is recommended.

There are a few other things you should know about using an SSD cache.

First, don't remove the hardware without removing the cache from the volume first, even when the device is powered off. There's a warning message if you power off from DSM to remind you of this.

Second, NVMe drives are quite pricey, and considered consumables. The error rate on SSDs increases with age and usage, though DiskStation Manager will warn you when the drives are degraded. Synology's own SNV3400 NVMe drive that we used for testing are rated to 500TBW (TeraBytes Written), which is well above the industry average. While you can fit cheaper NVMe drives from competitors, they will need to be replaced more quickly, or may result in data corruption.

Lastly, caching systems use memory too. This works out to around 50MB for a 128GB SSD.

Should You Buy The DS920+?

The DS920+ is the best, affordable, scaleable NAS for the professional home user that values their data. It's a beast of a machine that will handle everything you throw at it with ease—whether that's running your own server software via Docker containers, handling your home security via Surveillance Station, or keeping decades of family photos safe in Synology Moments. Most importantly, it'll do so within the Synology ecosystem. That means easy-to-use software, reliable hardware, and excellent support if you need it. In fact, Synology guarantees their Plus series devices for three years, compared to two years for other models. In addition, software updates are usually provided for seven years.

Synology isn't the cheapest NAS manufacturer out there. You could certainly get faster hardware at a similar price point elsewhere, but you wouldn't benefit from any of the exclusive technologies such as Synology Hybrid RAID that makes efficient use of mixed disk sizes, nor the fantastic range of first-party software. You could even roll your own budget NAS with open-source software like FreeNAS or unRAID, but I wouldn't recommend putting anything too important on there. I've trusted Synology with my data for many years now, and it's never let me down.

The only real disappointment with the hardware is the lack of Multi-Gigabit Ethernet connectivity. While link-aggregated dual-Gigabit connection means you can have full Gigabit performance to multiple clients, it doesn't help to speed up performance to any single client. This matters if you want to use your NAS for video editing, and we may find multi-gig LAN connections more common in the coming years. For typical users though, Gigabit connectivity is plenty fast enough for things like streaming 4K video.

What Exactly Can You Do with a Synology NAS?

More broadly speaking, you might be wondering what you can actually do with a Network Attached Storage system. A Synology NAS has always been a central part of my home network, and it's one of a few devices that I'd class as essential to my work and family life.

Backup

Use Azure Resource Groups: A Simple Explanation

Resource groups (RG) in Azure is a new approach to group a collection of assets in logical groups for easy or even automatic provisioning, monitoring, and access control, and for more effective management of their costs. One benefit of using RGs in Azure is grouping related resources that belong to an application together, as they share a unified lifecycle from creation to usage and finally, de-provisioning.

The underlying technology that powers resource groups is the Azure Resource Manager (ARM). ARM was built by Microsoft in response to the shortcomings of the old Azure Service Manager (ASM) technology that powered the old Azure management portal. With ASM, users could create resources in an unstructured manner, leading to many challenges in tracking such resources or understanding their dependencies. This led to huge difficulties that discouraged people from using Azure, as they would have a big mess once they had to deal with multiple applications that spanned more than one region.

To better understand this challenge, imagine you wanted to create an application in the old Azure management portal. To do so, you would create the virtual networks, the storage account(s), the cloud services, virtual machines, and potentially many other components of that application—without the ability to group them. If you were to build or deploy more than one application, it would become a difficult to find which resources depended on which, what order to create them by, or even which application they belonged to.

How Do Azure Resource Groups Help?

Azure Resource Manager, which was announced in 2014 and became generally available in 2017, addresses this challenge and others by providing a new set of application programming interfaces (APIs) that are used to provision resources in Azure. ARM requires that resources be placed in resource groups, which allows for logical grouping of related resources.

Line-of-Business in Azure (LOB)

In the figure below, two resource groups are used for grouping: First, those that are related to a line-of-business (LOB) application, and second, to an infrastructure as a service (IaaS) workload.

Although creating a resource group requires specifying a region for it to be stored in, the resources in that resource group could span multiple regions. The requirement to have a region for a resource group comes from the need to store the deployment metadata (definitions) associated with it in a specific location and does not dictate that resources belonging to it need to be in the same region.

Benefits of Azure Resource Manager (ARM)

Before ARM, you had to provision resources independently and you had to have a good understanding of their dependencies and accommodate for them in deployment scripts. As an example, to create a virtual machine, you needed to create a storage account, a virtual network, a subnet, etc. first.

On the other hand, ARM can figure out the dependencies of resources that need to be provisioned before creating the virtual machine and what order they need to be provisioned in, saving the user from having to repeat their work to fix unnecessary errors during deployment. In the example above, ARM will automatically create the virtual network and storage account simultaneously with the virtual machine. The portal blades walk the user through defining the related resources as part of provisioning the virtual network. As an example, in the screenshot below, you can see that creating a virtual machine requires specifying the other dependencies in the settings blade, including the virtual network, the subnet, the public IP address, and storage account, among other things.

Settings a Resource Group in Azure

ARM provides the ability to provision resources declaratively using JavaScript Object Notation (JSON) documents. The JSON document may include a description of multiple resources that need to be provisioned in a resource group, and ARM knows how to provision them accordingly. This provides an added flexibility and ease in managing resources belonging to resource groups. Using JSON in this manner allowed for creating resource templates that would make it much faster to provision resources belonging to a resource group. This also allowed for third party providers to make hundreds of templates available to provision different resources that correspond to many deployment scenarios. Those templates are available from code repositories such as GitHub or the Azure Marketplace.

In the ARM architecture, resource groups not only become units of deployment, but also units of management of related resources. This allows users to determine the cost associated with the whole resource group, making accounting and chargebacks more manageable. It also allows role-based access control (RBAC) at the resource group level, making it much easier to manage user access to the resources in the group. When users log into the Azure Portal, they will only see resource groups they have access to and not others within the subscription. Administrators will still be able to assign access control for users to individual resources within the resource group based on their roles.

Management of Azure Resource Group

Aside from scripting (e.g. using PowerShell or the Azure CLI 2.0,) resource groups can only be managed in the new Azure portal that became generally available last year. If using the new Azure Portal, a resource group item is available in the navigation menu by default and can be used to open the RG management “blade,” as you can see in the screenshot below.

The RG management blade provides a straightforward way to create and manage resource groups. It also provides a flexible customizable, high-level view of available resource groups in a specific Azure subscription. The user can select what columns to see in this view based on their role and interests and may use filters to zoom in on resource groups specific to a subscription or a location.

Resources in a Resource Group

The new portal was designed to work well with the ARM concepts and architecture providing great flexibility and user experience in how resources are displayed and managed. The portal displays blades to the user as additional resources are created. A blade is a self-contained page (or set of pages) that allows the user to view and manage all aspects of the resource they have created using a step-by-step wizard-like approach for building the resource.

Keys to a Successful Azure Resource Groups

Despite the advantages resource groups and ARM bring to Azure users, it is important to use them with care and good insight. The key to having a successful design of resource groups is understanding the lifecycle of the resources that are included in them. For instance, if an application requires different resources that need to be updated together, such as having a SQL database, a web app, a mobile app, etc., then it makes sense to group these resource in the same resource group. It is important, however, to use different resource groups for dev/test, staging, or production, as the resources in these groups have different lifecycles.
