Triangle Tuesday 9: the Nagel point, alteration on a theme, running out of letters, and the sacred texts
Today we're going to use one of the most ancient methods of mathematical exploration: alteration of an established theme. Or in other words, we're going to say "Hey, I liked that thing you did. How about if we do that, but different. Is that anything?"
Earlier, we looked at the medians, which are cevians (lines drawn through a vertex) that divide the triangle's area in half. This week, we're going to alter that to look for cevians that divide the triangle's perimeter in half and see what comes of that.
These lines are called splitters, and finding where to draw them turns out to be a surprisingly simply problem. We just use the excircles. The places where they are tangent to the sides of the reference triangle are called extouch points, and those are our targets.
Theorem: a line drawn from a vertex to the extouch point on the opposite side is a splitter of the triangle.
Tumblr media
Proof: Let Ta be the extouch point opposite A. Let U and V be points of tangency with the extensions of sides AB and AC respectively. Then because the segments AU and AV are both tangent to the same circle, they are equal. Furthermore we may divide the red segments at B and C, and then
AB + BU = AC + VC.
Tumblr media
Tangent segments BU and BTa are also equal, and the same for segments CV and CTa. Then
AB + BTa = AC + CTa
which shows that ATa splits the perimeter in half.
Tumblr media
And of course what we love is when three lines all cross at one point. Here are all three excircles and extouch points. If we draw in the splitters, will they all cross together?
Theorem: the splitters of a triangle coincide at a point.
To prove this, we will use Ceva's theorem. We look at the ratios that the sides are divided into by the extouch points, that is, ATc / TcB, BTa / TaC and CTb / Tba. If the product of these three ratios is 1, then the lines ATa, BTb, and CTc all cross at the same point.
Tumblr media
Then what are those ratios? The semiperimeter of the triangle is s = (a + b + c)/2, which is the length of either the red or the blue path above. Taking the red path and removing the side c, we get
BTa = s - c
BTa = (a + b - c) /2.
Similarly for the blue path we find
TaC = (a + c - b) /2
and the ratio of the two segments of side a is
(a + b - c) / (a + c - b).
Working our way around the triangle, we get
(a + b - c) / (a + c - b) * (b + c - a) / (a + b - c) * (a + c - b) / (b + c -a)
which cancels out to 1.
Tumblr media
Here then is the Nagel point, the intersection of the vertices joined to the extouch points, which is also the intersection of the splitters, and given the symbol X(8).
Oh yeah, I can't keep using single letters as symbols for points indefinitely. There's only so many available. From now on, I'll be referring to triangle centers by their Kimberling numbers, which are named after (and assigned by) Clark Kimberling, a professor of mathematics at the University of Evansville. He is the keeper of the Encyclopedia of Triangle Centers, the sacred texts of our cult of triangles. There are currently 65,385 listed, which I realize is quite a few. (Don't try to memorize them all at once.) Most of them are technical and not of general interest, but many of them are a lot of fun to look at. I'll be back next week with a different alteration on the idea of cutting a triangle in half.
If you found this interesting, please try drawing some of this stuff for yourself! You can use a compass and straightedge, or software such as Geogebra, which I used to make all my drawings. You can try it on the web here or download apps to run on your own computer here.

How to easily stream your (New) 3DS to a PC
For a long time, capturing footage from a 3DS was a pain - streaming the 3DS screens either required a hardmod to install a capture card (which, if you can, should still do if possible), or use one of the several wireless methods (NTR CFW and HzMod) that gave poor results, especially on Old 3DS.
Today, thanks to the effors of zbash92, there is now a way to stream the New 3DS display to your computer with actually decent picture quality and low latency!
youtube
New NTR CFW test done back when it was firstly released
Here's a few applications of streaming your 3DS to a computer:
Playing on a bigger screen
Recording footage of 3DS games
Capturing audio for OSTs or music you made on 3DS
Below is a guide to setting everything up, including audio capture.
Requirements
A hacked New 3DS system (Old 3DS users might use HzMod via a separate guide but the performance is VERY POOR. Old 3DS can still have their audio captured by audio cable.)
A good network connection that both the New 3DS and your PC share
(If you want to capture audio) A 3.5mm to 3.5mm audio cable and either a microphone port or a Y splitter that has a microphone port
Setup wireless streaming (3DS)
Install the .cia file onto your 3DS from the latest release of this NTR fork
Run the newly installed app, go through the setup until prompted to run a desired version - pick 3.6 HR at the very bottom
Press X+Y to open the NTR CFW menu and choose Remote Play (New 3DS) - this will show you the IP address your console has, and will also let you configure quality and performance options
Setup wireless streaming (PC)
Install one of the following NTR viewers: - NTRViewer (Windows and Linux, x64) - Snickerstream (Windows, x86 and x64) - kit-kat-slim (Windows, allows using input redirection AKA controlling your 3DS with the PC) - Twix (Windows, also allows input redirection and looks fancy) - cuteNTR (Linux) - cuteNTR-OSX (Mac OS) There are other ones, including for Windows 10/Xbox and even Wii U, but the performance may not be ideal for these
Run the NTR viewer you chose and input the IP address you got earlier. You can also set quality and performance options in the viewer as well as rendering options if available
Connect to your 3DS and enjoy looking at your console on a bigger(?) screen!
Setup audio capture
Connect the 3.5mm to 3.5mm audio cable to your 3DS headphone port and PC's microphone port (directly or via the Y splitter in computer's headphone port)
You can test the audio by either enabling listening to the new microphone device or using a program such as Audacity or OBS
Notes and Issues
TRY NOT TO CLOSE YOUR 3DS LID! It can sometimes lead to black screens and no response from the console, in which case you should hold the power button until it shuts down
This CANNOT record your DS, DSiWare or GBA VC games. Those require a capture card or using an emulator instead. Audio can be captured regardless of what your system is running
Some games may disable your internet connection, which means that you need to use patching option provided by NTR CFW or your NTR viewer of choice
If your NTR Viewer doesn't work, check firewall and viewer's render settings first and then try other viewers for your system
If your viewer disconnects on still screens, increase the timeout/wait time of the viewer if available (for Snickerstream, it's in Advanced settings)
If you have choppy framerate, decrease the quality, fiddle with QoS value and Encoder Priority, or get a better internet connection :p
If you have audio issues, try switching between microphone out and line out

My video recording setup
I’ve been trying all sorts of setups to capture the video and audio signal from my cabinets. All of the solutions I tried has worked (one involving an old DVD recorder that I had inside the cabinet) , but I’ve landed in my current setup as the best/easiest solution for me. It’s definitely not the cheapest setup, but since you can use most of the parts for other gaming related stuff you’re not throwing money solely at the arcade video recording setup.
1. Egret II cabinet I’m using one of my Egret II cabinets in TATE mode as the base for the streaming setup. I can move the audio/video signal splitter to a YOKO cabinet as well, but this is the main cabinet for recording sessions.
2. Sanwa VC-J2 (upper right in the image above) Sanwa VC-J2 is the audio/video signal splitter that i choose for my setup. When I bought it a few years ago, I could not really find any other alternatives. It’s quite expensive with it’s price tag of ¥27,000, but hey, it’s doing exactly what we want in this setup. So go ahead and buy it if you can’t find any other video/sound splitters. It’s sold brand new at Tops-game.jp AV output: S-Video & RCA, 240p.
3. XRGB-mini Framemeister (lower left in the image above) The XRGB-mini is the scaler in my setup, scaling the video from 240p to 1080p on the fly. Why would you want that, when you can scale it in post production you might think?
Since I’m using a Macbook as the computer in my setup, an internal video capture card is not an option, and all the external video capture devices I found on the market for Macs could capture a minimum of 480p, so that’s why I want scaling while recording instead of post production. YouTube is also compressing 240/480p content pretty hard, so uploading your video in 720/1080p would lead to a better viewing experience. AV output: HDMI, 1080p.
4. Elgato Game Capture HD60 I’m just upgrading from my old Game Capture HD to the newer Game Capture HD60. It’s mostly the same device, but you can also choose to record in 60fps on the new one instead of 30fps. I’ll try to shoot a comparison video soon and add to this post. Earlier video recordings I’ve made has been done with the Elgato Game Capture HD in 30 fps.The content recorded with the above setup is then added into iMovie (or FCP) and then rotated 90 degrees if recoreded in TATE, and after that I upload it to YouTube. This makes an absolute minimum amount of work in the post production process. It’s not the cheapest route as I wrote above, but it’s working very well for my needs.
What video recording setup are you using when capturing game footage from your JAMMA setups?

Media Player Classic
Media Player Classic (MPC) is a minimal media player for 32-piece and 64-piece Microsoft Windows. MPC copies the look and feel of Windows Media Player 6.4, yet gives most choices and highlights accessible in current media players. It and its forks are standard media players in the K-Lite Codec Pack and the Combined Community Codec Pack.
This task is currently basically kept up by the network at the Doom9 discussion. The dynamic forks are Home Cinema (MPC-HC) by clsid2, and Black Edition (MPC-BE) by alkaloid.
Media Player Classic was made and kept up by a software engineer named "Gabest" who additionally made PCSX2 designs module GSDX. It was created as a shut source application, yet later relicensed as free programming under the provisions of the GNU General Public License. MPC is facilitated under the guliverkli venture at SourceForge.net. The venture itself is something of an umbrella association for works by Gabest.
Media Player Classic advancement slowed down in May 2006. Gabest, the principal engineer of the first form, expressed in March 2007 that advancement of Media Player Classic isn't dead yet that he couldn't take a shot at it.[3]
The people group at the Doom9 discussion has since proceeded with the undertaking in two fundamental veins. The adaptation known as Media Player Classic 6.4.9.1 was intended for fixing bugs and refreshing obsolete libraries; its branch's advancement is latent.
Highlights
Media Player Classic is fit for VCD, SVCD, and DVD playback without the establishment of extra programming or codecs. MPC has worked in codecs for MPEG-2 video with help for captions and codecs for LPCM, MP2, 3GP, AC3, and DTS sound.
MPC additionally contains an improved MPEG splitter that bolsters playback of VCDs and SVCDs utilizing its VCD/SVCD/XCD Reader. On October 30, 2005, Gabest included *.mp4 and MPEG-4 Timed Text support.[24] An AAC interpreting channel had once been available in MPC.
MPC-HC is additionally one of the first(unknown) to help Dolby Atmos sound locally. MPC can utilize an INI record in its application organizer, making it a compact application. If you want to convert video to mp3 download the best Mp3 Rocket app for your and android phone.
Media Player Classic is fundamentally founded on the DirectShow engineering and along these lines consequently utilizes introduced DirectShow interpreting channels.
For example, after the open-source DirectShow deciphering channel ffdshow has been introduced, quick and top-notch disentangling and postprocessing of the MPEG-4 ASP, H.264, and Flash Video positions is accessible in MPC. MPC-HC can play recordings in these arrangements legitimately without ffdshow.
MPC gives DXVA backing to fresher Intel, NVIDIA and ATI video cards when utilizing an H.264 or VC-1 codec. This gives equipment speeding up to playback.
Notwithstanding DirectShow, MPC can likewise utilize the QuickTime, RealPlayer, and SHOUTcast codecs and channels (whenever introduced on the PC) to play their local documents.

SoundSplitter Pt.2
We started to actually develop SoundSplitter. The learning curve was steep to say the least. We were trying to create something new, while also trying to figure out what a startup even was or could be.
I started reading everything I could get my hands on. I didn’t know anyone who had created a successful startup - so I asked around. I got the contact information for one semi-successful local entrepreneur through a friend. I didn’t try and pitch the idea or anything, just grab coffee to ask some questions. Unfortunately, my emails went unanswered.
I discovered the writing of Paul Graham and plowed through everything on his blog. The way he broke down what it was to create a company of your own was both captivating and intoxicating. He made me want to be a “founder.” I love projects that are completely immersive - and making your own company seemed like one of the most all-consuming things someone could do. Waking up early, staying up late, working on weekends, and constantly failing in the pursuit of learning new things quickly became my new idea of making it.
Graham led me to the discovery of Y-Combinator and that led me to the wider world of incubators, angel investing and venture capital. Sure, I’d seen The Social Network and basically understood that a “VC” was someone who invested in tech companies. I knew that a venture capitalist was someone to be respected/feared/loathed/loved depending on their decision whether to give you money or not, but I had no idea who the hell a venture capitalist was or who a venture capitalist could be.
This was early 2013 - we were getting closer to having something that we wanted to share with people outside of our small group. We’d pitched our friends and tried to figure out if SoundSplitter was something that people wanted. It seemed like it was.
Along with our research into what it was to create a company in general, we did a ton of market research. A couple of people had danced around our idea in the past, but had had basically no success. I tried out their apps and they weren’t very easy or fun to use. I knew that we could do better. We also started monitoring tech trends and developments very closely - mining releases and articles on every new gadget or app to make sure we didn’t miss a thing.
Then Samsung unveiled the new Galaxy S4.
This thing was amazing. Both Brian and I were (and are still) iPhone users, and Aravinda was an Android guy, but we all could appreciate the power of the new device and were amazed by the plethora of special features it came with. One of these features was called Group Play. Group Play was exactly what we wanted to make. They marketed it in a slightly different way (for playing w/o headphones for a stereo effect, document sharing, etc.) but all of the functionality was there. We were crushed.
We instantly wrapped up our project and called it quits on SoundSplitter. No, we hadn’t wasted thousands of dollars, or hundreds of man hours. But we had an idea and the dream of making it a reality quickly came to a close. It stung.
So we packed up our idea and shoved it into a dark corner of our collective memory. But the feeling I got stayed with me. I was intoxicated. And we hadn’t even achieved much! I could only imagine the feeling that would come from building something that really made an impact on people’s lives.
