➫ HOLDEN thought he'd snag some time alone, defrost himself after all the tension and danger he's been subject to. Not that he didn't love his crew, they were his family now. But sometimes, even family could be a little too much, the four walls closing in on him, which he never liked. The perks of growing up on a large family farm and being an only child, he presumes. So, the ever curious captain slipped away, making his way into the shopping center, nothing in particular on his mind to get. His stomach protested that he was hungry after awhile of walking around, to which he stopped at a food stall. A few patrons outside so he figured it must have been good, gathering in line behind a few of them. "Anything good to eat here? All I've been eating are dried rations for the past few weeks, so maybe the better question is, anything besides freeze-dried food?"

Masking, YCMAL edition

So, after the general info on masking, here's how it specifically looks like and impacts some of the 'verse's characters.

I think I kind of need to preface this with the fact that a lot of my characters have neurodivergent traits because, well. I do. I don't know how a neurotypical person thinks, the same way a neurotypical person doesn't know how a neurodivergent person thinks. You can read about the experience, and, despite shitty stereotypes to the contrary, you can empathize with it, but the wiring of the brain is literally different.

So when I'm listing characters here as neurodivergent, I either a) set out to write them that way or b) in hindsight can't deny that their experiences are written through a very specifically neurodivergent lens. Someone not being explicitly labelled as ND doesn't necessarily mean they aren't, I just..really don't want to go back through my entire 'verse applying diagnoses the same way I happily slap an MBTI or enneagram or kindergarten teacher/assassin label on them, because that feels wrong.

But if you're neurodivergent and see something in a particular character that makes you feel seen, I'm not going to tell you 'nah man, they're actually neurotypical'. Especially because literally every single one of them was written by someone neurodivergent.

Anyway! Canonically ND characters and their masks:

David: masks extensively. Generally does his best for 'unobtrusive, pay no attention', unsure why it doesn't seem to work (mostly because he's talented and beautiful, so it seems less 'unobtrusive' and more 'I think I'm better than you', which isn't helped by the fact that often when the mask does slip, it's to show frustration, contempt, or disdain -- think at the All-Star Game his rookie year, or several points early on with Jake. Also does not help that he often does think he's better than people.)

Bryce: Still laughing at 'straightsona' used to describe Bryce out with his teammates, because it's perfect. His 'I don't care, I'm hot as shit, bitches love me' dickhead behaviour was him picking up those behaviours from popular peers and teammates over the years, partly mistaking that for the reason they were popular (rather than being seen as boy kings making them callous or arrogant), and partly viewing them as the exemplar of someone no one would predict was gay. Jared's worst enemy.

Speaking of, honourable mention to Raf Sanchez AND Julius Halla here, Jared's going around collecting neurodivergent loved ones all through IJ(aoe).

James: 'unobtrusive, pay no attention', much more successfully than David, partly because he has a mouthpiece in the form of Finn. His crashing after road trips is partly extended overstimulation and change, but it's also having to wear the mask more extensively, because he has much less time to himself, especially when he shared a room. (He's mostly unmasked with Finn, that's why Finn is his exception to a lot of No People things, but he wasn't at the beginning).

Holden: Also kind of 'I don't care, I'm hot as shit, bitches love me', but...ironically? He doesn't mask as much as the others, and because of that, he frequently drives away people who originally seem to like him and wonders why. Has been described as 'a lot'.

Fiona: Literally will not leave the house without a full face of makeup and a pair of heels or she'll feel exposed and vulnerable, and putting her make up on is how she prepares to be Outside Fiona. She's very perky and friendly at work. The second she gets home it's an 'uggggh' moment and straight into the shower to decompress/literally unmask. She's more aware than any of the guys that she's putting on a performance, partly because she grew up with all those 'girls are expected to be...' followed by a list of things she definitively wasn't. Has also been described as 'a lot'.

Finn: And How May I Be of Service To You Today?

Now this is where it gets kind of interesting because like -- people often have facades. That's not a neurodivergent only thing. People can be fake, or posture, or pretend to be something they're not. Mike, for example, will lean into the big macho asshole when he's put on the defensive, Willy is Always Performing, Thomas is sunshine even when he doesn't really feel like being that, Robbie will play the buffoon to make people laugh if he thinks they need it, half of Joey's rants are playing to the cheap seats.

Like, there's a difference between pretending you're somebody else sometimes, or behaving inauthentically, and full on 'yeah, they're masking'.

But Georgie is masking. Georgie is, at all times, evaluating his surroundings, monitoring people's emotions and reactions (especially to him), and behaving in the manner he thinks is most likely to lead to his being liked. And he was already doing that when Robbie met him, but it's intensified significantly since.

I think that's where the biggest difference lies between some of the above ND characters and Georgie? David, for example, doesn't care if he's liked (like, yes he does, but also...no). The mask is for safety/to minimize vulnerability. David's in particular was tweaked to get praise and avoid criticism from his parents (didn't work), teachers, and coaches (worked much better), not so much for his peers.

But Georgie's isn't for safety. Georgie doesn't manage his behaviour to avoid harm, Georgie wants people to like him. And he's discovered that people don't seem to like him when he does certain things, or acts certain ways, or needs things from them, so he just...doesn't do those things.

Finn's interesting because he has both forms. Please like him it'll break his heart if you don't.

(aka "Why Was There a Holy Mime here?")

Leo Escobar, aka Mr. Cuban Swagger himself, had been planning this Federales meeting for weeks. It was supposed to be elite. Organized. Confidential. Professional.

And then.

James Randal waddled into the meeting room in a Burger Shot polo and swim trunks, holding a filing cabinet drawer full of fish sticks and a bird.

“This is my plus one!” James shouted, throwing an arm around Carmine, who looked like a kicked dog in a track suit. “He’s a cop! Kind of. Well, was. Now he just cries near water.”

“James,” Leo said slowly, “Why the fuck would you bring an ex-cop to a federal summit?!”

James blinked. “He’s emotionally damaged, it doesn’t count.”

Mamaita Jehmimi (floral dress, combat boots, rage incarnate) was already clutching her rosary so hard it snapped.

Holden (WWI vet who once called an Uber a “mechanical blitzkrieg”) stood up and saluted a ficus.

Ricky, James’s useless nephew, just nodded sleepily. “Sick… free food?”

The Holy Mime made the sign of the cross.

And Osvaldo—the only man holding this circus together—was drinking Maalox from the bottle.

Leo tried to start the meeting.

“Gentlemen,” he said. “Today, we’re discussing—”

“THE FRENCH!” Holden bellowed. “They’re coming again. I can smell the baguettes. We need to—”

“No, Holden. We’re not fighting the French.”

“Yes we ARE,” James chimed in. “I saw two in the parking lot eating cigarettes!”

Everyone groaned.

Then James added, “Also Carmichael here says Cuba isn’t real.”

“I never said—”

“YOU HATE CUBA,” James yelled. “AND ABUELAS.”

Mamaita leapt across the table like a lioness on Red Bull. “YOU SAYING SOMETHING ABOUT ABUELAS, YOU LITTLE ROTTEN MEATBALL?!”

Carmine shrieked.

The room exploded.

Holden began swinging his cane like a musket yelling, “NO MORE NAZIS IN THE KITCHEN!”

Osvaldo tackled James over a table of documents yelling, “YOU STAY OUTTA CUBAN AFFAIRS YOU GERIATRIC GRINGO!”

James screamed, “MIME, PROTECT ME!”

The Holy Mime sprang into action.

He leapt like a possessed ballerina across the table and drop-kicked Leo Escobar square in the chest.

Carmine tried to break it up. Bad idea.

He fumbled for his loaner taser—borrowed from a guy who ran a haunted escape room—and aimed for the mime.

James screamed, “CROTCH HIM, CARMINE!”

He slipped on a piece of fried fish stick, accidentally fired straight into his own groin, and let out a sound like a dying goat trapped in an air fryer.

"AAAEEEEEEEEEEAAAAHHHHHH!"

He screamed.

Then peed himself.

Then passed out.

Right there. Face down. Puddle of shame.

James pulled out his phone and smiled sweetly.

Vivian was always person of high seriousness and independence. As the only child of her parents who were both academics and spent their early marriage travelling the world. They were world class academics and Vivian felt the weight of immense expectations on her shoulders. It was assumed that she would follow in their footsteps and continue their legacy of scholarly works and presentations. Despite the pressure, Vivian found comfort in this path as it was a world she was well-versed in and passionate about. She revelled in new ideas, as well as the thrill of travelling to far-off places. At the same time, she cherished spending quality time with her parents in Holden. She loved when they were home and always wanted them to be home more. Upon starting her high school education, Vivian’s life took a positive turn. Her mother, in a selfless act of dedication, took a sabbatical from her career to ensure Vivian had a stable childhood. However, this plan was unexpectedly disrupted when Vivian met James.

James and Vivian were together for four passionate years, resulting in their daughter, Maya. But once Maya was born the cracks began to show almost instantly. Vivian had spent nearly her whole childhood travelling and being pulled in and out of school. She wanted her daughter to have a settled childhood and to be near her grandparents. This was something James made very clear that he never wanted. Although Vivian knew that he had issues with his family, she had no idea how strong those feelings were or the true reason behind his aversion to Holloway. James told Vivian that she would have to return to Holden without him if that was her decision. So she packed her bags, strapped her daughter into the car and never returned. Truth be told, she always thought James would give in and come running after them. Vivian and James have stayed in contact for the sake of their daughter, although the relationships have become more strained as the years have gone on.

Upon her return to Holden, Vivian dedicated herself to her academic aspirations by enrolling in graduate school and ultimately earning her master’s and PhD degrees. Due to her parent’s esteemed reputation, Vivian was fortunate enough to secure a position at Holden University (with her father pulling some strings).

In the most recent update, what was James going to say here:

'“I—“ James says, then frowns.'

Holden was right when he immediately said "I'm throwing you off, I'm going to shut up" -- his interjections made James lose his train of thought entirely.

It'd honestly more accurately be "I..." James says, then frowns. but I can count on like, one hand how many ellipses I've used in this 'verse, and every time I have, I probably spent at least an hour debating it. I've read too much bad fic (and bad traditionally published books tbh) that overused them in my lifetime to use them unless I consider them absolutely necessary.

So he hadn't made it as far as 'actual constructed sentence', but it was on the subject of the 'reasons I acknowledge that I should not be in love with you at this point: a) early b)fast c) YOU KEEP INTERRUPTING ME'

Except James actually likes Holden's interruptions, half the time James is saying words he's like 'these were all better in my head' so Holden interrupting him is great. Interrupting him to state the thoughts James is thinking? So James doesn't actually have to say it himself and he knows Holden isn't misunderstanding him (or James can immediately clear said misunderstanding up if he is?)

Incredible, 10/10 from James.

➫ JAMES could try to convince this guy, or himself, that he wasn't the type of guy to sleep around. But it would be a flat out lie. In space, you had the deep black endless nothing or you had the vague connections you made to make the emptiness seem not so empty. "Is that so?" It was known in Belter space that sex was one thing and love was nearly impossible to hold onto, not when most Belters had their jobs on ice haulers or something equally as dangerous. Now, Holden looked at the man before him, truly raking light hues over him and smiling after awhile, like he was a cat who caught a mouse. "Didn't think you were all that into me, Trev. What's wrong, the bitches leave you alone for a night?" He asked, his tone heavy with snark with no actual bite behind them. Not that he was saying no either because he stepped into the shorter male's space and kept those eyes on his face.
