Why UK Businesses Are Switching to VoIP in 2025

Let’s be honest— “changing your phone system” probably isn’t on anyone’s dream to-do list. Most of us only think about it when something goes wrong: missed calls, dodgy lines, or that dreadful crackle that makes you feel like you’re phoning from 1997.
But here’s the reality in 2025: businesses across the UK are switching to VoIP—and not just because their old systems are falling apart. It’s because the way we work, communicate, and do business has completely changed. What is the situation with traditional phone systems? They’re struggling to keep up.
So, what’s really behind this nationwide shift to internet-based calling? Let’s unpack it—no jargon, no sales waffle. Just a clear look at why VoIP is becoming the smart choice for UK businesses.
First Things First—What Is VoIP?
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. In plain English, it means making calls via the internet instead of using old copper landlines.
Instead of plugging into a physical phone socket, a VoIP phone system uses your internet connection to route calls. That’s it. No complicated boxes, no engineer visits just to move a desk phone, and definitely no waiting on hold to get a line fixed.
So Why Are Businesses Switching to VoIP?
Let’s explore the key reasons behind the surge in switching to VoIP across the UK in 2025.
The PSTN Switch-Off Is Real—And Imminent
By December 2025, BT is switching off the UK’s traditional Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). That means landline phone systems relying on copper wires will be obsolete.
If your current UK business phone system is still clinging to old-school tech, it’s time to act. VoIP is the modern alternative—and frankly, the only sensible one.
“Think of it like switching from VHS tapes to streaming. It’s not just newer. It’s better in every way.”
Cost Savings That Actually Make Sense
Let’s talk numbers. Traditional PBX phone systems come with hefty setup costs, ongoing maintenance, and expensive call charges—especially if you’re dialling internationally.
In contrast, a VoIP business phone system offers the following:
Lower line rental (or none at all)
Free internal calls (even between different office locations)
Competitive call rates, especially for international numbers
Minimal hardware requirements
For most SMEs, switching to VoIP means cutting telecom bills by 30–50%—without sacrificing call quality.
Remote Work Is Here to Stay
Even post-pandemic, flexible and hybrid working aren’t going anywhere. And that’s where traditional systems fall short.
With a cloud phone system, your team can:
Take work calls from any device (mobile, laptop, tablet).
Use softphones instead of desk phones
Access voicemails and call logs from anywhere
Route calls to remote teams with ease
In short, VoIP supports the way modern teams work—whether they’re in the office, at home, or somewhere in between.
Features That Make You Look Bigger (And Smarter)
You don’t need to be a massive company to offer a polished, professional call experience. With a hosted phone system, even a small team can enjoy:
Auto-attendants (“Press 1 for Sales…”)
Call recording and analytics
Voicemail-to-email
Call queuing and hunt groups
Call forwarding and routing by department or shift
And yes—all of this can be managed through a simple online dashboard. No IT degree required.
Scalability Without the Stress
Hiring a few new people? Expanding to a second site? With old systems, that usually means engineers, new lines, and more costs.
With a UK business VoIP solution, adding users is as easy as ordering a pizza:
No new wiring needed
Just add users in your portal
They’re ready to take calls within minutes.
VoIP grows with your business—without growing your overheads.
Disaster Recovery Built In
Ever had a phone line go down during a storm? Or lost access to voicemails because the system crashed?
A VoIP phone system is cloud-based, which means:
If your office internet fails, calls can reroute to mobiles instantly.
Data is backed up and accessible from anywhere.
You can work through outages without losing business.
It’s not just convenience—it’s business continuity. Something every UK SME needs.
Professional Support from UK Providers
You’re not in this alone. The rise of UK business VoIP providers means more local expertise, better customer service, and tailored packages for small to mid-sized businesses.
Look for providers who:
Offer UK-based support (not call centres halfway across the globe)
Understand the needs of SMEs
Provide easy-to-use management tools
PineVox, for example, prides itself on offering VoIP that’s smart, simple, and supportive—without the technical jargon.
Integration with Other Business Tools
Modern VoIP systems can integrate with your CRM, helpdesk, calendar, and more. That means:
Caller ID can show customer details
Calls can log automatically in your CRM.
You can track call performance across teams.
It’s all about giving you better visibility and control—and making communication work for your business, not the other way around.
Still Using Mobiles for Everything?
Many SMEs still rely heavily on mobile phones. And while they’re convenient, they come with drawbacks:
No call logging or recording
Poor call routing or missed calls
Mixing personal and business conversations
With a proper VoIP business phone system, you can use mobiles smartly—as part of a wider, professional system. Not as a stand-in for one.

Key Benefits of Switching to VoIP in 2025
Let’s sum up what UK businesses are really getting when they switch:
Benefit
Why It Matters
Cost Savings
Lower monthly bills, fewer setup headaches
Flexibility
Perfect for hybrid, remote, or multi-location teams
Scalability
Add or remove users instantly
Cloud-Based
No on-site hardware to maintain
Secure & Reliable
Built-in failover and data protection
Professional Features
Look bigger, work smarter, stay connected
Is VoIP Right for Your Business?
If you:
Want a system that works wherever your team works?
Need to reduce phone costs without cutting corners
Are you tired of unreliable landlines?
Want something modern—but not maddeningly complex
Then yes, it’s time to look at VoIP. And more specifically, at a trusted UK business VoIP provider who understands what SMEs really need.

How to Create Kik Account without Phone Verification

What if you're not comfortable giving your number to Kik? Get it. Most people are looking to make their accounts more private. Maybe they want to use a separate account to remain anonymous or just to avoid spam.
You can still register a kik account without having a phone. There are a few simple workarounds. Here's how to do it.
Kik asks for your number, but why?
Kik reduces spam by using phone verification. In essence, it's their way to ensure that the people they are dealing with are authentic. Your number may also be used to recover your account if, for example, you have forgotten your password.
Some people are uncomfortable with giving their numbers out. You may not have one at all (looking to you WiFi-only devices).
While Kik does prefer a particular number, you can still get around this.
What if you don't have a phone number?
Yes, it's still doable. Kik will ask for a number to sign up. However, you can get around this by using a few tricks.
Kik is a popular app. Here are the things that it usually wants.
Now, many apps will ask you for your mobile number during the sign-up process. Email used to be sufficient in the past, but now it is not.
You may be able to skip the part about the phone number, for the time being, depending upon the version of the application and the way you register.
You can use a temporary code to work around the problem if you don't have a valid number.
There are several options available if you wish to avoid the telephone number
You can still use a number that is not your own.
It's best to create a brand new email. Make a Gmail or ProtonMail new account to use with Kik.
Kik will accept a number from sites like PVAPins.com.
Consider using another messaging application - Many apps will not require a phone number.
Avoid using free VoIP numbers and "fake phones" or apps that offer fake phone numbers. Kik may flag your account if you use these apps.
The Step-byStep Guide to Registering Without Your Real Number
youtube
You can start your journey right away if you want to:
1. Download Kik
Download the App from Google Play or the App store. Search for Kik Messenger and download it.
2. Join Now
Tap "Sign Up" to open the app. Then, enter the username and display name you have just created. Create a strong password.
3. Skip the number
Kik allows you to skip ahead in some versions without needing to input a numeric code. You can skip forward if possible. Don't worry if you don't; the next steps will help.
4. PVAPins will provide a Temporary Number

PVAPins.com
You can choose "USA", or another country supported by Kik.
Click on Kik to select the service.
You can rent a phone number from the app.
It usually takes a few seconds for the code.
Enter the code in Kik.
5. Your In
After the code is approved, you can start using your account. Joining groups, chatting and other activities are all possible.
A Note on Temporary numbers
PVAPins has a lot of advantages because they use real SIM-based phone numbers, not the recycled VoIP ones which are marked. The company also covers several countries, including India, Brazil and Germany.
You can rent a number without installing any software. Simple.
Here are a few extra tips (just in case Kik is picky).
Kik could block your old number
Use a different IP address each time you try this.
Kik will not work? Try reinstalling or clearing the app cache.
You can try switching between networks.
Common Issues

You can't solve the problem by yourself
What Is Happening?
You can fix it yourself
Received SMS Code but no message
Kik doesn't like this number
PVAPins offers a variety of games.
The number marked as invalid
Voice over IP or Flagged Number
SIM only
Account flagged
Kik saw a sketchy thing
Switch your IP and try again
Questions and Answers
How do I make Kik without using my phone number? Yes, you can. Just use your temporary number and an email. PVAPins can be used for this.
Will Kik let me skip phone verification? The app may require a phone number. You'll most likely need your phone number for the registration process.
Are temp numbers safe? If you are using PVAPins as a reliable source, then you will be in safe hands.
How can I get a new temp number if the old one is lost? Kik may need to confirm your identity again. Renting the phone number over a longer period of time or adding an email to your account as a backup is advisable if you value the account.
That's it. Kik does not require that you give your phone number. You can sign up using a temporary one. The process is made easier with a trusted temporary number.
If you have any trouble, please let me know. Kik's behavior can sometimes be strange, even though this method is generally effective.

WHAT IS MOBILE ?
A mobile phone, or cell phone,[a] is a portable telephone that allows users to make and receive calls over a radio frequency link while moving within a designated telephone service area, unlike fixed-location phones (landline phones). This radio frequency link connects to the switching systems of a mobile phone operator, providing access to the public switched telephone network (PSTN). Modern mobile telephony relies on a cellular network architecture, which is why mobile phones are often referred to as 'cell phones' in North America.
Mobile phones also support a variety of multimedia capabilities, such as digital photography, video recording, and gaming. In addition, they enable multimedia playback and streaming, including video content, as well as radio and television streaming. Furthermore, mobile phones offer satellite-based service
The first handheld mobile phone was demonstrated by Martin Cooper of Motorola in New Y
Mobile phones are considered an important human invention as they have been one of the most widely used and sold pieces of consumer technology.[7] The growth in popularity has been rapid in some places, for example, in the UK, the total number of mobile phones overtook the number of houses in 1999.[8] Today, mobile phones are globally ubiquitous,[9] and in almost half the world's countries, over 90% of the population owns at least one.[10]
History
Main article: History of mobile phonesMartin Cooper of Motorola, shown here in a 2007 reenactment, made the first publicized handheld mobile phone call on a prototype DynaTAC model on 3 April 1973.In 2001, the third-generation (3G) was launched in Japan by NTT DoCoMo on the WCDMA standard.[15] This was followed by 3.5G or 3G+ enhancements based on the high-speed packet access (HSPA) family, allowing UMTS networks to have higher data transfer speeds and capacity. 3G is able to provide mobile broadband access of several Mbit/s to smartphones and mobile modems in laptop computers. This ensures it can be applied to mobile Internet access, VoIP, video calls, and sending large e-mail messages, as well as watching videos, typically in standard-definition quality.
By 2009, it had become clear that, at some point, 3G networks would be overwhelmed by the growth of bandwidth-intensive applications, such as streaming media.[16] Consequently, the industry began looking to data-optimized fourth-generation (4G) technologies, with the promise of speed improvements up to tenfold over existing 3G technologies. The first publicly available LTE service was launched in Scandinavia by TeliaSonera in 2009. In the 2010s, 4G technology has found diverse applications across various sectors, showcasing its versatility in delivering high-speed wireless communication, such as mobile broadband, the internet of things (IoT), fixed wireless access, and multimedia streaming (including music, video, radio, and television).

Uber? Lyft? What the hell is going on?
Ever had to contact customer support and heard over an automated voice instead of a human? How about contacting them and once you explain to them your issues only for them to give you ready-made responses as they haven't clue of what you're talking about? Well, that's been my excrcuiating experience as a driver for both companies at the same time. So, let's dive into how ludicrous it's been.
Let's start with Uber since it's rich with crazy stories. Uber has kind of a fair hourly wage going $25-30. You can receive payments on weekly basis like most jobs and contracts. Or you can have instant access to your money and even cash out once you've finished your shift with the Pro Card. Of course, I would choose the latter because why not? Normally I cash out directly to my debit card and needed I new one some time ago. I went in to change the details for the new card and had to undergo a security code verification via text message. I never received it so I had to contact support. I explained the issue I had and was told to whilelist my phone number from a text message. That's strange. How come I can receive text messages from Pro Card just fine when logging in, but not for this? Because this didn't work. I thought that this had to be a problem in their end. Now, a good tech support agent would troubleshoot such an issue should a solution like that not work. Not here; they "took it to further support" (Bear with here. I couldn't remember exactly what they said.) in order to resolve my issue. Their response: logout and in, reinstall the app and restart my phone. None of that worked because it's the most half-assed set of solutions of all time. Imagine if EA told you do that with their games you try to boot up. It'll just add the notoriety they're known for having.
It didn't feel like I was chatting with a human, so I decided to call support for a better chance. I had to wait (Get ready for this) ONE MOTHERFUCKING HOUR just to talk with someone. I can't believe I had the patience for that. I finally get to talk with an agent, only for them to tell me the same. Damn. Thing. Dude, what the fuck? Is Uber run by Skynet or something?! I kept contacting until I remembered why I had to whitelist the phone number I've been using with my account: it's because it's believed that it was being blocked by the provider. The number here is one I had setup for business reasons via TextFree, so I contacted them about it and they told me there was no issue on their end. Is Uber screwing with at this point? But, I went and switched the number on my account to my personal one, thinking that the business number is being assumed to be a VoIP, which is not allowed with some services. I finally get the code needed to finalize debit card changes to my Pro Card account.
Now this next story really interfered with my job significantly. I've been doing rideshare look normal, steady with a consistent schedule I setup for myself. The one thing that annoys me is that I have to verify my facial identity every once in a while. I mean, you know what I look like. Nothing too drastic has changed about me. So, why do I gotta go through this as I begin the job at a desired time? One day, I randomly go into the trip preferences menu to see it go from this:

To this:

Note: the Uber Eats food delivery preference is suppose to be there, but I didn't take a screenshot before it disappeared.
Of course, I had to talk to an agent. But this was more aggravating. I tried my damnedest to explain this issue. The agent, however, couldn't seem to figure out what I mean. Did they not have any job training? Once that was sorted, the agent said things like "This should be the type of experience for you to have" or "We understand your concern". Do ya, really? Because you should've went deeper into it by now. Continuing with this chat, guess what they told me then: the same solution from the Pro Card "troubleshoot", but that didn't work because THE APP IS NOT THE FUCKING PROBLEM! I disconnected and got in contact with a different agent. This bullshit repeated, but I got a whole new response. I got confirmation of my eligibility to have these preferences, including UberXL, and it was still approved. They also actually spent the time to look into it for a few minutes, although it was longer than. The problem involved the inspection of the vehicle I have registered. They wanted me to show an image of a newly documented inspection, but I don't have to worry about it for another 6 months. In my state at least, (I'm from the USA) I have to perform an annual inspection for legal validity of driving the vehicle, and it's $100. Doing this every 6 months makes no sense and it feels like it'll lead to an endless money pit, as a certain mechanic would say.
After that was sorted, I went back to doing the job like normal, only for it to happen again the next week. Starting to feel like Uber has a grudge against me. I go back to dealing with the same ol' crap more frustrated than ever, even angry, and get an unexpected response: I'm not eligible to perform UberXL rides. Well, isn't this the most inept thing to happen here? I drive a minivan, goddammit. What do you mean I'm not eligible? I just disconnected and almost didn't bother to reach another agent. But, I'm managed to collect myself and get it sorted out like last time. I'm certain this will happen again however.
On the Lyft side of things, the same issue with support, except this is about emblems. Speaking of those emblems, the adhesive is weak sauce. So, I needed new ones. You can order new ones from the site or app with the push of a button. It's suppose to arrive within week, but didn't as that time range passed. I had to contact an agent, but it was hard to do it on the app because for some reason, they have too high of expectations that problems are solved with FAQs. But this is a troubleshooting issue; there's no way they can believe things can work fine that easily all the time. I had to go to the site to get help, and they responded by arranging a new order, which did arrive. Thing is, I've had this problem since I first signed up. I didn't even get my training kit with the cool pink mustache. After those emblems wear out too soon, I had to order another pair. Here's me thinking "Maybe they sorted out that issue with the delivery". But something even worse happened:

And as of the date of this blog post, it's still like this. Why? I even contacted them with this screenshot and they just gave me an automated message saying they'll just reship the emblems. This shouldn't have to be the only way to obtain new emblems beside the Express Hubs, which is too far from where I live. And they didn't arrive this time. If I contact them about any other problem, it'll just be the same type of response instead of troubleshooting.
Now, I don't know too much about the experience with support for riders since I've not used rideshare often. But I'm sure there's similar issues. The fact that this is the type of support we receive is unacceptable. It's as if they only measure their success financially based on the quantity of users. With the money they make, you'd think they could hire more competent employees for tech support, but they just found some random people with barely any tech skills to speak of and brought them in. There's got to be some kind of union strike or something because we can't keep letting them get away with this.

What is the PSTN Switch Off? A Comprehensive Guide for Businesses

Let’s be honest — you probably didn’t wake up today thinking about telecom networks. However, if your business still relies on a landline or equipment connected to an outdated phone socket… It’s time to pay attention.
By December 2025, the UK’s old-school phone network — the Public Switched Telephone Network, or PSTN — will be switched off for good.
What is the PSTN switch-off, you ask? Good question. Let’s get into it — no jargon, no fuss.
So, what exactly is PSTN?
Right, picture this: copper wires buried under streets, buildings, and walls — carrying your phone calls from one place to another. That’s PSTN. It’s the system we’ve used for decades — reliable, yes, but not built for the way we work today.
It’s been chugging along since the days of fax machines and pagers. And now? It’s heading into retirement.
Why is the UK switching it off?
Because it’s… well, outdated. Costly to maintain. And frankly, not great for modern communication.
The internet has moved on. Phones have moved on. But PSTN? It’s still stuck in the ’90s.
Instead, we’re moving to digital systems, such as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) and full-fibre broadband. They’re quicker, cleaner, and far more flexible.
So, the PSTN switch-off in the UK isn’t just a technical upgrade. It’s a full-on digital transformation.
When is the PSTN switch-off happening?
The big switch-off is set for December 2025, but don’t be fooled — things are already in motion.
From September 2023, no new PSTN-based lines have been sold.
And after 2025? It’s lights out for copper.
So, if you’re wondering when the PSTN switch-off is, the answer is: soon. And you don’t want to leave it too late.
What is a PSTN used for?
Here’s the bit that surprises most people. It’s not just about phones.
The PSTN supports:
Lift emergency phones
Alarm systems
Payment terminals
Fax machines (yes, still a thing)
Intercoms and entry systems
Desk phones — especially older PBX setups
So, if you’re still asking, “What is a PSTN used for?” — it’s quite a list. And if your business relies on even one of those, you’ll need a plan.
What happens when PSTN is switched off?
Honestly? If you’ve done nothing… things stop working.
Calls won’t connect. Card machines might go offline. Alarms could fail. It’s not dramatic — it’s just digital evolution catching up with your systems.
And it’s avoidable — completely. But you’ve got to make the move.
That’s the answer to “What happens when PSTN is switched off?” You’re left with silence — unless you’ve already switched.
So… what now?
Here’s your action plan. Nothing scary. Just some good, old-fashioned prep work.
Step 1: Take stock
What’s connected to your phone lines? Go room to room if you must — reception, store cupboard, server room, the lot.
Step 2: Call your provider
Ask what systems are PSTN-based. If it’s PineVox, we’ll talk you through it. No jargon. No lecture.
Step 3: Switch to digital
VoIP, IP-enabled alarms, fibre broadband — whatever you need, now’s the time to line it up.
Step 4: Test and train
Give your team time to learn the new system. You don’t want surprises during the Christmas rush or the Monday school run.
Wait… what’s VoIP again?
VoIP stands for Voice over Internet Protocol. In plain English: phone calls, but via the internet, not old copper wires.
It’s not sci-fi. If you’ve used Zoom, WhatsApp, or Teams, you’ve already used VoIP.

i0.wp.com
Why VoIP makes sense:
Keep your existing number
Use it on mobiles, laptops, or office phones
Crystal-clear call quality
Easy to scale
No engineer visits needed
PineVox specialises in setting up VoIP for UK SMEs — minus the faff.
Who needs to act?
Honestly? Most businesses. But especially those in:
Hotels – front desks, room phones, emergency lines
Retail – tills, payment machines, back-office phones
Schools & colleges – admin lines, security systems
Care homes – lift phones, intercoms, panic alarms
If you’re still on PSTN, this isn’t about upgrading. It’s about not getting left behind.
Quick checklist for SMEs
Before you close the tab, run through this:
When is the PSTN switch-off happening?
Have I checked which systems still rely on it?
Have I spoken to my provider?
Do I have a VoIP or digital plan in place?
Have I scheduled a switch-over before 2025?
Suppose you’ve ticked all five — top marks. If not, don’t worry. That’s where we come in.

Understanding the Importance of a Manageable Switch in Modern Networks
In today’s fast-paced digital world, businesses rely heavily on efficient, reliable, and secure networks to perform daily operations. Whether it's a small startup or a large corporation, maintaining control over network traffic, performance, and security is essential. This is where a manageable switch plays a crucial role in ensuring your network is running smoothly and efficiently.
What is a Manageable Switch?
A manageable switch is a type of network switch that allows for enhanced control, monitoring, and configuration of a network. Unlike an unmanaged switch, which functions automatically with no user input, a manageable switch provides network administrators with the tools to customize and optimize network settings. This includes setting up VLANs, monitoring network traffic, prioritizing data, and increasing security measures.
These switches are commonly used in business environments where control and flexibility are necessary. They give IT professionals the ability to tailor the network to the organization's specific needs.
Why Choose a Manageable Switch?
The main advantage of using a manageable switch is the level of control it offers. Here are several reasons why businesses are moving toward this technology:
Network Monitoring: With a manageable switch, you can monitor the performance of your network in real-time. This helps identify issues such as bottlenecks or abnormal traffic patterns before they cause disruptions.
Traffic Management: These switches allow for advanced traffic management. You can set priorities for certain types of traffic, ensuring that critical services like VoIP or video conferencing remain smooth and uninterrupted.
Security Enhancements: A manageable switch offers features such as port security, MAC address filtering, and 802.1X authentication. These features add an extra layer of protection against unauthorized access.
Scalability: As your business grows, your network needs to grow with it. A manageable switch makes it easier to expand your network by configuring new connections without disrupting existing services.
Key Features to Look For
When choosing a manageable switch, there are a few features to keep in mind:
VLAN Support: Virtual LANs allow you to segment your network into smaller parts, enhancing security and performance.
Quality of Service (QoS): This feature prioritizes traffic, making sure high-priority applications receive the bandwidth they need.
SNMP (Simple Network Management Protocol): SNMP allows for remote monitoring and management, making it easier for IT administrators to handle networks from a distance.
Link Aggregation: Combine multiple connections to increase bandwidth and provide redundancy.
Real-World Applications
Whether in a corporate office, data center, or educational institution, a manageable switch provides flexibility and control. For example, in a school setting, it allows the IT team to segment student and faculty traffic, ensuring secure and fast connectivity for all users. In a corporate environment, it ensures confidential data is kept secure while maintaining optimal performance for day-to-day operations.
Final Thoughts
In summary, investing in a manageable switch is a smart move for any business that values performance, security, and scalability. While it might require a slightly higher upfront cost and a bit of technical knowledge to configure, the long-term benefits far outweigh the initial investment.
A well-managed network is key to productivity and growth, and a manageable switch is a vital tool in achieving that goal. If your network demands more than just plug-and-play functionality, it's time to consider making the switch—literally.
