Ch. 1/? — This City Always Hangs A Little Bit Lonely On Me T+ | Sebastian/Farmer

It’s the first week of winter, and Sebastian is having a bad day. He wakes up at six, nearly an hour and a half before sunrise— too early, in his opinion, but his boss is a morning person, so their standup meeting is at eight (spirits, really, who’s awake at eight in the morning?)— and he spends thirty minutes hitting snooze on his alarm before he hauls himself out of bed. Brushes his teeth. Hops into his little five-square-foot excuse for a shower, which has absurdly low water pressure, and then tries not to freeze as he towels off, because baseboard heaters are useless against the cold, and the windows in his studio apartment are drafty. This apartment may suck, he reminds himself with chattering teeth, but it’s his.

I've decided to start posting the Hallmark AU I've been working on, because it's about 30 chapters long and I want it posted before the end of winter! Buckle up for some holiday sweetness, angst, mutual pining, and a sprinkling of mountain family dynamics.

see what constantly kills me about people who like aeon is that for how interesting their dynamic actually is, every narrative element or line of dialog that suggests their relationship being more than a trope-ridden tale of forbidden love between intelligence operatives on opposite ends of some moral divide always goes ignored, instead the focus is always on capcom's fan-service & little else,

take the "that night" conversation from damnation, for example, there's no discussion of the preceding accusation that leon levels at ada that it was she who released the plaga into the civil war, something to show us that despite whatever implicit romantic/sexual encounter happened off screen between them, leon still cannot trust ada (later reinforced when they meet in the hive & leon says he's "worried alright" as he watches ada gather information) & that ada absolutely doesn't give a shit about what he thinks of her & her work, he is a fun distraction on a path to something more important but she will throw him a bone when he's in over his head . the ending call between ada & her employer reveals to us that part of her mission was the destruction of svetlana's dominant plaga cultivation facilities, a definite end to her bioweapons program, & here much like with wesker in RE4 ada could very easily exonerate herself if she thinks of leon's apprehension as an obstacle in her vision for his role in her mission . instead both times she keeps her own goals a secret & the only depth she finds in their relationship is more akin to a quid pro quo, hence why when she opens the path for him & buddy to escape she quips that he owes her one & why the remakes essentially play that line on repeat whenever ada & leon help each other out .

this gets worse with re6 because again the fixation isn't on ada's visible annoyance with leon's gallant knight routine or how she says out loud that his confusion is "fun to watch", the differentiation in trust between how leon views ada & how he views chris, how even he cannot differentiate between carla & ada, his active denial of pursuing ada despite helena's insistence, it's the tossing of the ring in monkey mines, leon defending carla-as-ada from chris' vengeance & simmons' second form . it's not that i don't think those scenes are meaningful, but they exist in the context of everything else we're given on their relationship as it evolved over the course of 15 years that makes them so, they cannot be examined in isolation . for most it seems the bookend to their dynamic ends on ada's "so cute" remark as she vanishes into the fire & not the proceeding comment as she watches a heartbroken & crestfallen leon question what she is, that it amuses her, how lost he is in everything that's transpired . that despite all this time & their handful of encounters he still hasn't figured her out, & she kind of revels in it, it's a victory in its own way .

this is a piece of ada's characterization i was absolutely ecstatic to see reintroduced in RE4R & contextualized within the game's narrative, seeing ada with a knife to her throat talk down to leon despite being on her backfoot . say she doesn't work & tell, a more than obvious play on kiss & tell that references their shared moment on the tram in RE2R where ada gave leon hope only for it to quickly shattered . it doesn't matter how he clung onto the kiss, if he wanted to believe there was something genuine in her act or if he resents her for how she played him from the very start, ada's still left her mark & if the only reason he leaves her breathing is to demand answers it's good enough . seeing the smugness in her grin & the sinister lilt to her voice then & when she turns to leon on the boat to tell him he hasn't changed, he just thinks he has . it's not offered comfort that the do-good hopeful rookie lies within him despite the six years spent as a government lapdog, he doesn't know it yet but it's the answer to his following question, if she's changed or if she'll just use him again . he might be privy to her tricks but ada will still play him again, she just needs a different tune & in return, they'll both survive to watch the sunrise .

the weird thing is that this all makes perfect sense given where spacex is coming from. musk's a software guy. spacex is run like a silicon valley software company. this is what it looks like when you do Agile development on a rocket

the most fucked up thing about it is that it (sort of) works at accomplishing its goals. when you're running your operation like a software startup, your goals are not to create a product thats profitable or good or safe, or to minimize the amount of money you spend doing it. your only goal is to make visible progress as quickly as possible. these sorts of companies operate on venture capital and investors get impatient when there's no visible progress. if you spend too much time in the lab doing your due diligence, the saudi oil firms bankrolling your project get cold feet. musk might have a high net worth, but he's actually (relatively) broke in terms of liquid cash. he still needs investors.

ever since the start of the starship program, they've been testing shit on the biggest scale they can. in 2019 they built a water tower and strapped rocket engines to it just so they could demonstrate something. it doesn't matter that the rocket exploded if you can convince the investors this is a good thing. the rocket lifted off the ground, and people saw it. this drums up enough hype to get more people signed on. this is what the agile development brings them. they pay the fewest amount of people to get the highest amount of excitement.

this is just how silicon valley operates. elon musk is stupid, but he's not uniquely stupid. he's only unique in the fact that he's failed upwards so many times that he's been able to keep this shit up. spacex almost went bankrupt multiple times, but he kept getting lucky and getting away with what's honestly some pretty bad decisions. it helps that he hires good engineers and that gwynne shotwell (the person who's actually in charge of the company's day-to-day) is competent and good at her job.

starship is probably going to work. its gonna be terrible. its probably gonna double the number of people who have died in spaceflight accidents within a few years. but like. its gonna work. people are gonna keep throwing money at the project and they're gonna keep blowing up rockets until they fix all (most) of the problems. nothing will be learned and they'll keep doing shit the same way.

The literally only impressive thing about SpaceX Starship test is that it shows how incredibly dumb the audience is at this point.

People keep comparing Starship to SaturnV, because tentatively, if it ever became a space worthy vessel and orbital delivery vehicle (it's not); it'd be the largest and most powerful one in history, with SaturnV its only near peer (sorry, N-1, you really didn't qualify).

And the first "integration test vehicle" (read: the actually whole complete thing, that's literally the point of that kind of test; it's meant to be all the pieces, already tested and proven on their own, finally assembled into the final thing to make sure everything plays nice when together)

So lets see how did Saturn family development go in comparison? How many "integration test vehicles" did the Saturn project obliterate in the process?

ZERO. They blew up ZERO Saturn first stages, ZERO Saturn second stages, and ZERO Saturn payloads.

It's not fucking normal to blow up rockets this size and complexity, because they're expensive and dangerous! You build SMALLER, SIMPLER prototypes, you test those, you do all the "risky" tests on your separate parts of the system, and test the integration at less ambitious scales and stress levels. That's how you do rocket science. Iteratively, yes! But the iterations must make sense!

And let me stress

They got Saturn to moon and back in the SIXTIES, when simulation was in diapers (partially, literally invented within projects like the Saturn series).

SpaceX exists at a time where they can (and should) do 90% of the raw, grueling development with lot of painful failures in digital simulations, or tests where you build a small, simple thing and enhance the simulation based on what you learned there.

And the worst of it all is that another thing that Elongated Muskrat has at this disposal is all of the Saturn research. It's been DONE.

Saturn and other projects paved the worst of this goddamn slog. They did all the dirty, awful work already. They literally gave us the textbooks that you study from if you actually get a science degree (Elon does not have one).

And again, the most embarrassing thing isn't Musk and his poor, toxic, overworked circus that's SpaceX. The most embarrassing thing is the "space science enthusiast" crowd that's cheering on this launch as some sort of tentative success.

The king is fucking ass goddamn naked, and you all yes-men are an embarrassment to this doomed goddamn species. You're not supporting the effort to give Humanity a "chance at survival", you're hooting and hollering around a basementman dumpster fire that's literally immolating what's left of the scraps of natural and human resources we have left.
