If a spell causes you to proliferate, and there are no petmanents/players with counters on them, do you still proliferate? Asking for the new cards that care about you proliferating, like Venser and Ezuri.
Tumblr media
701.27a To proliferate means to choose any number of permanents and/or players that have a counter, then give each one additional counter of each kind that permanent or player already has.
As you can see from the definition of proliferate above, you get to choose any number of players or permanents with counters, which includes zero.
Since you're allowed to choose zero things to add counters to, doing nothing when you proliferate still counts as proliferating and will still cause cards like Ezuri or Venser to trigger.

My poor, handsome Venser. The Phyrexians retrieved his body and turned him into Sheoldred's puppet. I was upset when they killed him off, now this? I hope someone puts this monstrosity in the ground soon!

I find it odd that WOTC would create a new card for Venser in the latest Phyrexia set, but never feature him in the story even for a moment. Venser's spark gets more screentime, and Karn mentions Venser a handful of times across the story. I was disappointed there was no interaction between Corpse Puppet and Karn. I'm curious what your thoughts on this would be. Thanks!
With the benefit of hindsight and seeing everything at once, it may seem obvious, but that鈥檚 not how story development actually works, unfortunately. The set and story were in development for years before it鈥檚 all released at once, and I don鈥檛 have the insight to tell you when things lined up and why.
At the very least, this set was chock full of characters and plot beats as is and there were five main stories to tell it with. Adding another character who hadn鈥檛 appeared in a decade and who was effectively just a zombie was probably a bit much. In hindsight, I wish there would鈥檝e been a good place to do it, but note that Venser, Corpse Puppet is Venser in name only.
Slobad, in contrast, lined up nicely with the need for a red aligned antagonist in that side story. But things just don鈥檛 always work out that way.

MAGIC PLANESWALKER ULTIMATE BRACKET, ROUND TWO OF FOUR!
Tumblr media
Can't prove it, but I got a feeling Gids would have gotten five across the eyes as soon as he laid a finger on the Blackblade without permission.
And Venser's a Corpse Puppet. Enjoy that mental image!
Make your choice!

Okay, I finished drafting faster than I thought, keep it mind that this is just based on what I own currently, but I haven't gone back into mirrodin block cards, since most have been reprinted.
The theme of this deck is Rescource Acquisition and Alternative Damage, even if if I'm forced to attack and get blocked, most of my creatures have alternate triggers to punish opponents. There are snow lands and permanents that synergize with what's in the deck, and open some Routes to Marit Lage just for contingency, I have no real intention on attempting to get Marit Lage unless I can. Here is my deck list.

The goal of this deck was to just have fun and make something that has unusual synergy. With so many cards that act as mana, get bonuses from artifacts, or generate token creatures, costs aren't that big of a problem. Cards can also combo with several others for various effects that can win the game. There's always an option or a loophole, and if you play your cards right, your opponents will be the only ones paying the price.
