VAR ra đời từ những năm 2010, nhưng mãi đến năm 2016, FIFA và các tổ chức bóng đá lớn mới bắt đầu thử nghiệm nghiêm túc công nghệ này. Sau nhiều cuộc thử nghiệm và đánh giá, vào tháng 3 năm 2018, VAR chính thức được viết vào Luật Bóng đá bởi IFAB. Từ đó, VAR đã được sử dụng rộng rãi trong các giải đấu lớn như FIFA World Cup và UEFA Champions League. Các Trường Hợp Áp Dụng VAR như sau:

Quyết Định Thẻ Đỏ Trực Tiếp: VAR giúp đảm bảo tính công bằng và chính xác trong các quyết định thẻ đỏ. Trọng tài sẽ sử dụng các video quay chậm để phân tích kỹ lưỡng các tình huống dẫn đến thẻ đỏ.

Tranh Cãi Về Bàn Thắng: Khi có tranh cãi về sự hợp lệ của một bàn thắng, VAR sẽ xem xét lại tình huống từ nhiều góc độ khác nhau. Điều này bao gồm việc xác định việt vị hoặc các lỗi phạm trong quá trình ghi bàn.

Quyết Định Phạt Đền: VAR được sử dụng để kiểm tra các tình huống phạm lỗi trong vòng cấm, giúp đảm bảo quyết định về việc trao quả phạt đền được chính xác.

Sửa Các Quyết Định Sai Lầm Của Trọng Tài: Trong trường hợp trọng tài đưa ra quyết định sai, VAR sẽ xem xét lại tình huống và cung cấp thông tin để sửa sai.

Với sự hỗ trợ của VAR, các trận đấu bóng đá trở nên công bằng hơn và giảm thiểu tranh cãi. Dù vẫn còn một số ý kiến trái chiều, không thể phủ nhận rằng VAR đã mang lại những cải tiến đáng kể cho công tác trọng tài.
