I'm unsurprised but still sad about this. Maybe I'm only surprised it took this long. When I was a kid, patterns were like...a buck or two. They were the loss leader to get people sewing. You bought the pattern cheap and had to buy $100 worth of other stuff to make a shirt, that's how they got you. Now, paying $20+ for tissue paper on top of all the fabric and miscellany you need for a supposedly simple skirt makes sewing that much more frustrating. I tried to wait for sales but once Hancock Fabrics closed, Joann's essentially never ran 3 for $5 or $1 pattern sales. They had no more real competition. They didn't have to.
And these are just some suggestions from an average cosplayer, by no means a professional recommendation, but obviously be careful with the patterns you do have. They're thin paper and it's almost impossible to fold those pieces up as well as they came so get some ziploc bags so you can keep all the pieces together, keep the envelope and the instructions in that bag too. Pattern pieces aren't going to do a hell of a lot of good if you don't know which ones go together.
This one might be more do as I say not as I do, but after I'm done with a piece and fold it back up, I LIGHTLY iron my pattern pieces to get them to lay flatter in the bag. Sometimes you then actually have a hope of getting them back in the original envelope. Though I would still say get a bag because the envelope will get beat up and torn over time.
Last thing I would say is if you have a pattern you use a lot, get a roll of butcher paper and make your own copy. Especially if you made alterations to it you can prolong the lifespan of that piece. You can make whatever notes you need to on the pieces. It doesn't have to say just Simplicity 5871, you can say 'Skyloft Zelda dress' or 'Sailor Moon skirt' whatever you actually used it for. If you lose the envelope and the original pattern down the line, you're not going to remember a pattern number. Remind your future self why you bought this pattern in the first place. Even looking it up online is probably going to get harder. As is I'm pretty sure these companies have reused numbers because sometimes I've looked for a pattern and found different ones using the same number.
Well my loves, it appears as though the answer to "Can the Big Pattern Company (Simplicity/Burda/McCalls/ect.) survive the death of JoAnn?" has come.
The answer is no. No it cannot. It has been sold to a liquidator just like JoAnns was.
So if there is ANYTHING you want I suggest you get it now. simplicity.com is currently having a pattern sale and I snatched up some that might be useful for cosplay purposes.
I am very glad these last couple of years I have built up my collection.

So if you sew you know (and if you don't sew why would you know) that commercial paper sewing patterns* normally cost between $15 -$30 USD in America. Sometimes when they are on sale they go for less, often rare vintage patterns are more expensive, but they aren't cheap.
But this weekend the crafting gods were smiling on me because I went to scrap in Baltimore. And I got 10 new to me commercial paper sewing patterns for $2 each.
I also have two patterns in there I bought from scrap last fall.
But fellow tumblrites, behold my bounty!

Here are my favorites up close.

According to my mother, she wore something very close to McCall's 2361 to my christening.
very excited to make some of these.
*pdf patterns are cheaper but then you need to pay for printing and if you don't own a printer that can run you $10+ at a print shop. Moodfabrics has great free patterns as well. But you still have to print and tape them together.
