The Ultimate Guide to Choosing the Best Stand Fans in India for 2025
As summer temperatures continue to rise across India, having an effective cooling solution becomes a necessity for homes and workplaces. Stand fans, also known as pedestal fans, have remained a popular choice due to their ability to provide a refreshing breeze efficiently.
Whether you're setting up a new space, replacing an old fan, or upgrading to a more advanced model, this guide will help you find the best stand fan in India for 2025.
Why Choose a Stand Fan?
Before diving into the best stand fans available, let's explore why these fans are a preferred cooling option. They offer several benefits, including:
Portability: Unlike ceiling fans, stand fans can be moved easily from one room to another.
Adjustable Height: Allows you to position the airflow exactly where it's needed.
Space-Saving: These fans require minimal space and can be stored conveniently when not in use.
Affordable Cooling: More cost-effective than air conditioners while still providing relief from the heat.
Energy Efficient: Consumes significantly less electricity compared to air conditioning units, making it a sustainable choice.
Factors to Consider When Buying a Stand Fan
To make an informed choice, consider the following aspects before purchasing a stand fan for your home or office:
1. Fan Size
The size of the fan plays a crucial role in determining how well it circulates air. Select the right size based on your room dimensions:
Small rooms (up to 100 sq ft): 16-18 inches
Medium rooms (100-250 sq ft): 20-24 inches
Large rooms (250+ sq ft): 24 inches or more
2. Airflow and Speed Control
A stand fan’s primary purpose is to improve air circulation. Look for models that offer multiple speed settings (low, medium, high) so you can customize airflow intensity as per your comfort.
3. Oscillation Function
Fans with an oscillation feature distribute air more effectively across the room. Most modern stand fans provide oscillation ranges between 90-180 degrees, ensuring better air coverage.
4. Noise Levels
A noisy fan can be a distraction, especially in bedrooms or workspaces. Opt for a model designed for quiet operation while maintaining strong airflow.
5. Durability and Build Quality
A fan’s lifespan depends on the materials used in its construction. Choose models made of high-quality plastic or metal with a sturdy base to prevent tipping, especially at high speeds.
6. Energy Consumption
To keep electricity bills low, go for an energy-efficient fan. Many modern stand fans come with power-saving features, ensuring comfort without excessive energy use.
7. Design and Aesthetic Appeal
While functionality is the priority, the design also matters. Today’s stand fans come in stylish, modern designs that complement your home or office decor.
8. Additional Features
Some advanced stand fans offer:
Remote Control: Adjust settings from anywhere in the room.
Timer Function: Schedule the fan to turn off after a set duration.
Smart Features: Operate the fan via mobile apps or voice assistants like Alexa and Google Assistant.
LED Display: Easily monitor speed, oscillation, and timer settings.

LP. «Siberiade». Bande originale du film d’Andrei Konchalovsky. «Le Chant Du Monde»: 1979, LDX 74719 (Франция).
LP.
Interview with Eve Golden Woods!
Tumblr media
Many of you know who is Eve is. She's a writer and artist, a part of Dreamfeel studios whose beautiful game If Found won Best LGBTQ Narrative and Best LGBTQ Indie game at the first ever Gayming Awards presented by EA games. I am really excited I had the chance to ask Eve some questions about herself, her time at Lovestruck and her creative process.
Congratulations on the two Gayming Awards (Best LGBTQ Narrative, Best LGBTQ Indie Game) for "If Found" from your game studio, Dreamfeel. What was the inspiration behind making the game?
If Found... was a game that emerged out of a collaboration between Llaura McGee, the founder of Dreamfeel, and artist Liadh Young. Liadh's background is as a comic artist, and so when they started working together Llaura had the idea of showing off Liadh's art by making a diary game, and using an erasing mechanic she had previously developed to let the player move through the diary in a fun way. By the time I came on board at the start of 2019, the game had already been in development for a while, so in some ways my work on that game was similar to the work I did for Voltage, because it was taking existing characters and concepts and writing a lot of scripts for them. Unlike Voltage, though, my work for Dreamfeel was a lot more collaborative and I had a lot more creative input. I really enjoy taking something and helping to make it the best version of itself that it can possibly be, but I was also really happy that I got to reflect a lot of my own experiences in If Found. Llaura and I both grew up on the west coast of Ireland, and although If Found... isn't autobiographical for either of us, it was definitely really meaningful to be able to tell a story that reflected our own experiences of growing up as queer teens in a similar kind of environment. Since the game came out we've had fans reach out to us and tell us that they also connected to the experiences of the main characters, and as far as I'm concerned, that makes me feel like I achieved everything I wanted to.
You are a writer and a visual artist. Does one come easier to you than the other?
I used to think of art and writing as talents, and I always felt like my art was at a very mediocre level (that's probably still true, lol). So when I was younger I focused a lot more on writing. It was only later that I started genuinely trying to improve as an artist, but when I did, I think I had a much healthier mindset, and approached it as a skill I could learn with patience and effort. Because of that, even though I still have a lot more confidence in my writing, I find art more fun and relaxing, and I don't stress about it as much.
Did you always know you would follow a creative path?
Kind of? Both my parents are artists, and I grew up surrounded by artists and writers, so it was something that was always very familiar and accessible to me. On the other hand, I didn't exactly have a clear idea of how to make it into a career, or what kind of work would be involved. But there's never been a point in my life where I wasn't doing something creative, even if it was only writing fanfiction.
What did your path to working professionally as a writer/artist look like?
I did a creative writing masters in college, but after that I spent years teaching English as a second language. That was really fun and I got to live abroad, but it was so busy and tiring that I didn't have time to do any writing outside of the occasional fanfic. I only started to take art seriously again when I became interested in games and comics as ways of telling stories. I did some critical writing, which led me to speak at a few local events and get involved in zine fairs. That was how I met Llaura, the director and lead of the Dreamfeel studio, and it's also what gave me the confidence to start applying for actual writing jobs.
Is there any work of art, visual or written, that you look to for inspiration?
So many! I try to read and watch as widely as I can, although there are touchstones I always return to, like the works of Ursula Le Guin and Terry Pratchett. Right now I feel very passionate about the actual play podcast Friends at the Table, which manages to combine really thoughtful worldbuilding and storytelling with cool, fun characters and great action scenes. I'm also reading a book called The Memory Police by Youko Ogawa, which has extremely beautiful prose.
Do you have a favorite piece of your own art, whether it is something you’ve drawn, a screenshot of something you’ve written or something else?
My favourite piece of art is usually whatever I finished most recently (I think that's true for a lot of people). Especially with visual art, once a bit of time has gone by you look back on it and start to notice all your mistakes, which is very annoying. But actually I do still really like the first piece of Fiona fanart I did last year. I managed to use some effects to give it a kind of nineties anime quality that I find really fun, and I think it conveys an emotion pretty effectively. That's always one of the hardest things to predict with visual art, whether the different parts will come together to create the exact mood you're looking for.
Tumblr media
I also really like the compass I did for Bycatch. Krissy (@xekstrin) was the one who suggested filling it with fingernails, which was such a good, gross idea! As soon as I heard that I knew it was perfect and that I had to try and draw it.
Tumblr media
Many people who read this blog know you as a writer for Lovestruck. When you look back on your time there, what stands out in your mind?
Lovestruck was very important to me when I first started because it was my first ongoing, regular, paid writing work. It gave me a lot of confidence and helped me to get into the habit of writing consistently and rapidly, which is a really useful skill to have. I know I was right to leave when I did, though, because I am just brimming with energy to work on my own projects, and channeling that power into something that you can't control will always end up disappointing you. Also, I made a ton of incredible friends, through Lovestruck itself but then even more so through VOW (@vowtogether), and that is more than worth all the difficult parts.
Is there any character that you would have liked a crack at writing?
Oh gosh, what a fun question! There are so many, but one I do sometimes think about is Axia, just because I know there are a bunch of fans who want her route, and because I had fun writing her as a villain in Zain's route. I can see in my head the shadow of a storyline that takes place after Zain's route is over, where she's in prison and trying to understand how she lost the battle with Zain and MC. I think there's, like, a gap there, where you could see her downfall forcing her to reconsider her assumptions about power, and that could build into a very interesting redemption story. But maybe it's for the best I never got to do that, because I would have wanted full creative control over it, and also I think the story in my head is very different to the sexy, in control, menacing version of Axia that her fans enjoy.
Do you have any upcoming projects you can talk about?
Most of my current work is under NDA, but I will say that I'm doing something very exciting with other VOW members that we should be able to talk about soon(ish). Maybe I can even give a little teaser... It's not a game, but it is something you can read, and my part involves cakes, swamps, and a museum.
Do you have a favorite quote or song lyric?
It's a big long, but there's a section from The Dispossessed by Ursula le Guin that has stayed with me ever since I read it:
"For we each of us deserve everything, every luxury that was ever piled in the tombs of the dead kings, and we each of us deserve nothing, not a mouthful of bread in hunger. Have we not eaten while another starved? Will you punish us for that? Will you reward us for the virtue of starving while others ate? No man earns punishment, no man earns reward. Free your mind of the idea of deserving, the idea of earning, and you will begin to be able to think."
It's such a profoundly radical way of imagining the world, so different to everything I was raised with, but whenever I think about it I feel like I can see something very beautiful and powerful that I hope to come closer to understanding some day.
And of course, "Solidarity forever, the union makes us strong."
I was a big fan of the show Inside the Actor’s Studio. Host James Lipton asked every single guest the same 10 concluding questions. I’ve picked 3 of them:
-What is your favorite word?
My favourite word: for sound, I like words you can really roll around on your tongue. Chthonic, alabaster, insinuation. For meaning, I think simple words that encapsulate big concepts have a kind of power to them. We use them so often we forget how big they are, how much weight they really have, but they give us the space to imagine new possibilities. Love. Freedom. Revolution.
-What is your least favorite word?
I've heard that "moist" is a lot of people's least favourite word but it doesn't actually bother me. My least favourite word is probably one where I feel like the sound doesn't match the meaning. One of the Irish words for rain is báisteach, which I feel has a much weightier and more onomatopoeic sound than rain. Rain is just very flat and uninteresting.
-What profession other than your own would you like to attempt?
Oh, so many! I love history, and I think being a historian/archaeologist would be fascinating. Or something that had a physical component to it, like being a potter or a carpenter. I don't think I'd be any good, but I'd love to take the time to learn.
What would be your advice to anyone who wants to pursue a creative career?
All the work you do matters. Even the failed experiments, the things you hate when they're finished. It all helps to make you better. Also, creative career paths are often really unexpected, so chase any opportunity that seems remotely interesting. Don't work for free for anyone who can afford to pay, but work for yourself and put it somewhere. On a blog, twitter, whatever. You'd be amazed how many people get noticed and get offered opportunities because of something they made in their spare time. You'll probably have to work another job for a long time, so don't be hard on yourself if you're too tired to devote much energy to creative work. Try to make art consistently, but don't feel like that has to mean every day. Don't chase after celebrities. Make friends with your peers.

1. Try to use the original charger. Compared with the original charger, the non-original charger has a certain gap between the output current and the voltage. The long-term use of the non-original charger can not only reduce the service life of the mobile phone battery, but also cause the battery of the mobile phone to explode and catch fire.
2. Lithium-ion batteries should be protected from full discharge during use (use a black screen to power down).
3. Do not place the phone in a high temperature environment. When the mobile phone is exposed to the sun for a long time, it will cause the battery temperature to suddenly increase or even explode.
4. Should try to keep the phone away from the water source, in case the battery is short-circuited by moisture.
5. If the battery has abnormal conditions such as drum belly and damaged casing, stop using it immediately and replace it with a new one.UK-online.co.uk is the home of British most comprehensive laptop batteries, dell Laptop Battery, and ac adapters website. Cloudwalker
In our newly relaunched "Learn more about..." interviews, we switch up the continuity slightly and focus on just one release: Gimmik's Cloudwalker. Martin kindly agreed to answer a few questions to kick off what we'll refer to as v2 of the "Learn More About..." blog.
Tumblr media
While Entre Les Chambres was the actual return of Gimmik to the public eye, Cloudwalker is more of a return to form. It is undeniably Gimmik; however, Cloudwalker treads some new ground for you. Can you shed some light on how the creative process changed from Entre Les Chambres / Deux Nouvelles and how those two albums might have influenced Cloudwalker?
Very well observed - they did influence Cloudwalker! Entre Les Chambres and Deux Nouvelles were both produced under technically limited circumstances. On top of that, I thought that no one will ever hear this material. Luckily it was not the case, and I got the chance to become a member of the n5MD family. When you produce with the idea that the material will never get released, it gives you a lot of room and space. You are not concerned about expectations. The music can flow and evolve freely. The calm nature of those albums helped that process. It was research where I experienced myself more as a witness than a composer. For me, that is a new approach. This approach was still the same when I produced Cloudwalker. That is the reason why the tracks are so diverse. Short Wave Memories and In My Family do not have anything in common, but that is the way they evolved, without me constructing anything. The most significant difference is that Cloudwalker was produced in a proper studio environment. Plus, I took a step into eurorack, which brings a very unpredictable element. And yes, that is Mutable Elements "Rings'' what you hear on In My Family. I was working on a self-generative patch with "Marbles'' when all of a sudden, the melody appeared...
I think you sent me In My Family shortly after you finished it, and it was one of the darkest days of the early pandemic; where our local government-issued curfews and such. It was the track that I needed at that moment; it brightened my day. It's very cool that the melody was a generative experiment gone right. I seem to remember you have quite a bit of the Mutable Instruments modules. Modular, to me, seems like a bit of a wormhole of experimentation. So, how do you stay focused when experimenting with new sounds and textures to bring, say, one of your Modular Nature tracks, which you have on your Youtube channel, to life.
Working with a modular system is entirely different. My approach is always a question. What will happen if I connect this with that and modulate with this? Then you start patching, and the results are entirely different from what I expected - a lot more exciting and better! In the beginning, I thought modular was about rebuilding synth voices. So I started emulating the signal-flow path of a 101 for a start. I missed the whole point of modular... A system has a life of its own and takes you to completely different places, and sometimes I do not even understand the results. (-: But that is not important. The decision to work with modular is to avoid walking down paths I have taken too many times when composing. What keeps you focused is your ear. The trick is to learn when to stop. In the beginning, I lost a lot of great patches when the result was already at 90%. When trying to reach 100%, my tweaks destroyed that patch's beauty, and I never found a way back to 90%. That happened a lot of times in the beginning. A modular system really helps to learn when to let go… (laughing). I chose Mutable Instruments because those modules are very focused on musical and harmonic results.
So, going back to Cloudwalker, how did it feel getting back to basics as far as Gimmik goes. People may not know that Entre Les Chambres and Deux Nouvelles were made for very personal listening. Care to shed a little light on those two, and more importantly, what made you want to go past those themes and bring Gimmik full circle for Cloudwalker?
Entre Les Chambres and Deux Nouvelles were NOT a conscious decision. Those were a necessity! The title Entre Les Chambres means "between two rooms", the space that is between two rooms. That is nowhere! It mirrors how I felt at that moment. There were many significant changes in my life, luckily nothing concerning my family, but still major changes. In order to cope with it all, I started making ambient tracks. It was the only thing that helped me to cope and focus again. The tracks happened by themselves. Listening to them and working on those albums was a calming experience. When they were finished, I played them to Chris, and he convinced me that he liked them. That led to the decision to make those first tapes. Later I sent them to you. Your reaction was very motivating because the music got released. With that motivation and getting back into a studio environment, the Cloudwalker tracks just poured out of me very quickly - it felt terrific to go back to the studio. My family gave me the time to work in my studio, and you and Chris gave very motivating feedback! From my perspective, this makes Cloudwalker my most important album so far, and I am very thankful for this chance! Another key element is that you gave me total freedom regarding artwork, choosing tracks, and their order. Just great!
Tumblr media
Well, I knew going in that you know what you are doing. So I shouldn't have needed to step in and manage such details. For release prep, I'm available to take care of the details that an artist doesn't have access to or the working knowledge. You and Chris ran Toytronics, and you are a graphic artist as well, so I knew that you know the drill. If something was glaring or didn't work under the n5 stylistic umbrella, it is my job to say something, but I was pretty confident that wouldn't happen. I also know that after you completed the tracks, you took a great deal of time to get them to flow perfectly and also fit on four LP sides—your care in craft shows, and it's been great to work with you.
You brought up Chris, and there is an Abfahrt Hinwl remix on Cloudwalker, so; I'm going to ask. Are we going to hear some new Abfahrt Hinwl soon?
Thank you, as I said, that means a lot to me. And I still think that it is a fortunate situation. The AH RMX of Sailing Everest on Cloudwalker was just me, to be honest. That is why I used an abbreviation - AH. It is more a hint. It has a lot of the Abfahrt Hinwil ingredients. We tried to revive the project and realized that working over a distance via the internet does not work for either of us. The key of Abfahrt Hinwil was that we worked in the same room, at the same time, with the same equipment - listening to what the other one does - giving an immediate reaction. The most important point is communication, which has to happen immediately - you need to respond straight away, not with a delay. Today we find ourselves in two different life situations. We both would like to continue. After an online experiment, we realized it would be only possible when we visit each other and then work in the same studio. That is not possible at the moment, and Covid plays a significant role in that.
Ah, I see; Abfahrt Hinwil was you and Chris basically feeding off one another; also, there are cheques and balances, which is great to have. I completely understand why it would not be feasible to do it from a distance effectively. So, I'd like to pivot to these little builds I see on your Instagram. You recently sent me a pic of a peculiar little box that looks to be a synth. Assuming this is something you built (loving the stickering, by the way). What is this, and does it appear on Cloudwalker?
(laughing) That is a drone box handmade by a guy in Russia. Six oscillators, each one with a kill switch. Three standard range oscillators and 3 Sub. A very rough-sounding machine, great for drones. The filter sounds very nasty, just great. There is a little bit in the track Cloudwalker itself but washed out by Big Sky. The downside is that there is no midi, trigger gate, or voltage control. It is more of an experiment tool. The important parts of the track Cloudwalker have Mutable Instruments: Plaits and Tides 1, using the Sheep mode. Both outputs went into Warps, modulated by Stages. The little melody was played live on the Yamaha DX Reface, going into the Big Sky. It was all recorded live onto tape to 4 tracks to a Tascam 234. Then it was mixed the classic way, patchbay, fx, analog mixer main out to digital. 75% of the album was recorded to a Sound Devices MixPre-3 II.
Tumblr media
It sounds like your Big Sky gets some action! Strymon makes some exceptional pedals. It seems like you can almost entirely make music out of the box if you needed to, which is excellent. So one last question: When we collaborated on the Cloudwalker one sheet text, you added something about the production tools "representing technology from 1958 to 2019," and I asked if 1958 was a type-o that needed to be corrected to 1985 when it was not. When people read that, I think they will be very curious as to what technology you utilized from that far back…
Yes, it is a great pedal, I love the sound and the fact that you get nice results very quickly.
1958- (laughing) There is an on oscilloscope from Russia, which can be seen in some of the videos on HIDDEN REALITY, and 2 vintage function generators. I got those old function generators from a close friend, he is an electronic engineer and professor for physics at a university. They got rid of all their old equipment, and he asked if I wanted to have something. He could not throw those old machines away, so he rescued them to his cellar. He changed the connections for me, so I can use them with the modular environment, using my standard patch cables. I used them a lot as modulation sources, as they can modulate extremely slow (like MI tides). But I have to admit that I got them for their looks in the first place…(laughing) - Those machines look like the machinery you see in Qs research center in old James Bond movies...

DIMMER SWITCH
Tumblr media
On the off chance that the garments make the man, the lighting makes the room. Regularly, after we've picked our goods, our paint, the embellishments with which we customize a room and make it our own, lighting is an untimely idea. However, it is integral to the presence of your room, yet your delight while in it. Since the greater part of the rooms in our homes will in general be multifunctional, (for example, the lounge area that fills in as an office, expressions and specialties studio, game room, and even a spot to eat), having only one wellspring of lighting isn't compelling.
To utilize the lounge area as an illustration once more, you may require solid, direct light for work, yet a milder, more climatic light for sentimental meals or social affairs with loved ones. You could have different light installations, or you could attempt a dimmer switch. When you introduce a light dimmer, you will have the option to control your lighting and use it for your potential benefit. This guide will take a gander at which dimmer switch brands are the best, what to search for, the amount they cost, and the amount you will cherish them.
Better than ever Light Dimmer Switches - Before home lighting became environmentally friendly, light dimmer switches were not horribly effective. Wire wound dimmers had a loop inside, and when you darkened your lights, part of the vitality went to the light or light, and the other part was occupied to the curl. Here, it was changed over to warm and squandered.
This is the reason old dimmers and lights would get hot - and why your electric bill would get high. Another reaction was that when the vitality was being changed over to warm, it made a humming sound. You would get the pleasant barometrical light you needed, just as a foundation orchestra of your vitality charge ticking upward. Luckily, light dimmer switches have gone through an earth-accommodating makeover, and they are considerably more effective. Furthermore, calm.
The present better than ever light dimmer switches work by just killing the ability to the unit and walking out on quickly. This occurs so rapidly that your eyes simply observe a consistent shine. Let's assume you needed to have a pleasant sentimental supper. You faint the lights to 25 percent of their most extreme yield. This implies the unit is turning itself off for 75 percent of the time and running for 25 percent. The advantages?
*No humming or murmuring.
*Bulbs last more.
*Easy to introduce.
*Cooler bulbs, which can convert into cooler rooms. Each degree includes in the late spring!
*Lower vitality bills on the grounds that the light is killed for a bit of time.
The disadvantages to these vitality productive light dimmers?
*They cost more than wiring a dimmer switch.
*Choosing one is more included.
For the primary concern, we'll state that they pay for themselves in vitality reserve funds. For the second, perused on. Picking the Right Dimmer Switch - The hardest piece of picking the correct dimmer switches is knowing the wattage of your present lighting framework. You need to discover the circuit burden and ensure you don't surpass the most extreme heap of the dimmer unit. Let's assume you have 5 50-watt lights on a circuit.
Your circuit load is 5 x 50, or 250 watts. Add another 10 percent to compute the base wattage your dimmer switch will require. You will likewise need to pick a dimmer that is directly for your light or lighting apparatus. On the off chance that you use CFL (minimized bright lights, ensure you purchase bulbs that are explicitly intended to work with dimmers. This will be composed on the bundling. One final tip: choose a general light dimmer as it will diminish low voltage incandescent lights and glowing fundamental voltage lights, rather than just incandescents.
The Best Light Dimmer Switches - For us all non-circuit testers, the universe of dimmer switches can be befuddling. AsktheBuilder, a confided in site for committed DIYers, lights up it a piece. Among all the decisions, three names develop as the best:
*Leviton
*Lutron
*Pass and Seymour
We should investigate a couple of their best models. You can peruse the smash hit dimmer switches online here.
This Leviton can work with dimmable CFLs, just as radiant bulbs. It highlights Auto Mode to decide if the light is glowing or CFL and changes the dimmer range to oblige for it. The 6673-10W replaces a normal switch yet utilizes standard wiring, so establishment is fast and simple. It can oblige illuminating to 300 watts - 120VAC CFL and 600watt - 120VAC brilliant.
The alternative for 3-way diminishing permits you to redo your lighting. This vitality sparing dimmer switch conveys a restricted five-year guarantee. For the cost of simply over $22, this is an extraordinary speculation for your home.
This dimmer presents a brilliant method to control lighting for table and floor lights. What is extraordinary about this dimmer is that it doesn't need any establishment and can be moved varying. You essentially plug your light into the installation on the dimmer, and afterward plug the dimmer into your outlet. You would then be able to utilize the slider to change the degree of lighting or turn it off.
The Lutron TT-300NLH highlights a LED finder light so you can discover your way in obscurity, slide on/off, 6-foot line, and UL (Underwriters Laboratories) endorsement. It works with lights that have a 300-watt greatest limit and handles both glowing and incandescent lamps. In the event that you faint your lights by 50 percent utilizing the Lutron, you spare 40 percent of the power and broaden the life of the bulb by multiple times. This is an extraordinary, versatile, lighting answer for your home. It sells for about $14.
This Pass and Seymour is an extraordinary choice for those with roof fans. It includes a fan speed regulator and dimmer, with one next to the other slider controls. There are 4 preset fan speed controls, and the De-Hummer include kills the murmur from the fan's engine. It is evaluated at 1.6 amp/300-watt and has a 3-way dimmer switch. The Pass and Seymour is anything but difficult to introduce, offers remarkable warmth the board, has power-disappointment memory, an effect safe thermoplastic lodging, and is UL recorded and CSA ensured.
It sells for just shy of $40 - somewhat pricier than the past two models, yet you have the double capacities to compensate for that. Including light dimmer switches is a simple, generally economical approach to build the reasonableness of your lighting. An extraordinary symptom is that you'll diminish your electric bill and proportionately increment the delight in your home. Peruse here for a broad choice of dimmer switches.

X-Ray Vision: Exposing 40 Years of Gadgets
Written by Nicolai Garcia
On August 28, we went to the Conservation Center (Institute of Fine Arts, New York University) housed in a historic town house on the Upper East Side to x-radiograph some electronic objects in Cooper Hewitt’s collection. The x-ray room, which doubles as a photography studio, is entirely black from floor to ceiling. Behind a door—reminiscent of those in sci-fi nuclear thrillers—sits the x-ray machine, black and medical.
Over the course of the morning, we unboxed an array of objects from Cooper Hewitt’s collection dating from the early 1980s to the present. We laid them onto an x-ray-sensitive sheet (which was wrapped in vinyl as to not expose the sheet to light) and then exposed them to the x-ray beam for a short amount of time (like a photographic exposure). Once the machine was done, the lights in the studio were turned off while we loaded the x-ray plate (like a photographic negative) onto a scanner.
We sat in anticipation while the image rendered, layer by layer, giving us a glimpse into each object’s concealed interior. In some cases, the rendering was over-exposed, meaning we had to do another round, with a lower voltage or shorter exposure. Andy Wolf, a current Conservation Center graduate student who assisted in the examination, compared adjusting the voltage and exposure of an x-ray beam to adjusting the strength and open area of a faucet; both control how much water comes out, but in different ways.
X-radiograph of a Braun calculator (2015-5-4) in the Cooper Hewitt collection, taken at 25 kV, 5mA with a 30s exposure.
Exterior of ET55 Calculator, 1980; Designed by Dieter Rams (German, b. 1932) and Dietrich Lubs (German, b. 1938); Manufactured by Braun AG (Frankfurt, Germany); Molded ABS plastic, electronic components; H x W x D: 13.6 × 7.6 × 1 cm (5 3/8 in. × 3 in. × 3/8 in.); Gift of George R. Kravis II, 2015-5-4
Digital x-radiograph of a GRiD Compass laptop (2010-22-1) in the Cooper Hewitt collection, taken at 70 kV, 5mA, with a 60s exposure.
Exterior of GRiD Compass Laptop Computer Prototype, 1981; Designed by Bill Moggridge (English, 1943–2012); Manufactured by GRiD Systems Corps (Mountain View, California, USA); Die-cast magnesium, injection-molded plastic; H x W x D: 25.4 x 29.2 x 37.9 cm (10 in. x 11 1/2 in. x 14 15/16 in.); Gift of Bill Moggridge, 2010-22-1
In the case of the objects we imaged, adjusting the voltage versus exposure depended on the object’s material. The voltage, measured in kilovolts (1,000 volts), is typically increased for materials made with elements with a higher atomic number. Steel, which is an iron-based metal with just a little bit of carbon, has a lower density and therefore requires a lower x-ray voltage compared to platinum, which has an atomic number close to lead, meaning it requires a high voltage in order for the x-ray beam to penetrate its surface. Lead is dense and heavy enough to be impenetrable to x-rays, and is used to line the x-ray room to protect those nearby from stray radiation. For reference, the voltage for a medical x-ray of a human being (carbon-based life-form!) hovers around 60 kv.
We repeated the cycle of imaging and adjusting for all the electronics objects (save for a platinum-encased cell phone, which our x-ray beam did not have high enough voltage to image), then took the images to analyze what we saw.
Digital X-radiograph of collections objects including a 2007 iPhone and a 2014 Pixel phone shown with contemporary cell phones (iPhone SE, iPhone 8, and Samsung Galaxy).
In the current age of technology, common devices, such as mobile phones and home assistants, are designed to hide their screws and other traces of how their components come together, making it hard to know what they look like under the hood. X-ray imaging these objects gives conservators a better idea of the structural makeup so that they understand what techniques must be applied to preserve them. In my experience seeing the x-ray of my iPhone 8 (far right), I felt more connected to it because I feel I saw who it really is inside.
Nicolai Garcia was the Digital Collection Intern at Cooper Hewitt during summer 2019. Nico is from Berkeley, California, and is a senior at Stanford University where he studies Computer Science and Art Practice.
Our thanks to the faculty and staff at the Conservation Center for allowing us to use their X-radiography equipment, and to Andy Wolf for his help!
