Omega’s first Alaska Project time piece prototypes came with a silver-white dial and red Gemini-capsule-like subdial hands to ensure precise reading even in severe vibration conditions while the Speedmaster was worn on the Lunar Roving Vehicle. The 1972 Alaska II Speedmaster came with three black Gemini-capsule-like subdial hands but by 1978, the Alaska III Speedmaster came with normal subdial hands on a classic black radial dial and became the watch for the Space Shuttle program. July 20, 1969 the Eagle has landed... Omega watches 2009 Apollo 11 merchandise next to commemorative bronze statuette of an astronaut stepping from the Lunar Module landing foot onto the lunar surface. Artist Ferdinand Rebechini (1926-2002) based this pose on the Norman Rockwell painting depicting “Man’s first step on the moon” (titled: “Man on the Moon”). A print of that painting was included as a fold out poster in the January 10, 1967 issue of Life Magazine. Swiss Omega SA used the phrase “FirstWatchOnTheMoon” to promote the manual winding Omega Speedmaster chronograph ever since. (Photo: MoonWatchUniverse)
