Excerpt from this New York Times story:
The Biden administration on Tuesday adopted stricter energy-efficiency standards for residential water heaters, the most consequential move in a flurry of changes designed to reduce the energy used by many common appliances including stoves, dishwashers and lightbulbs.
The Department of Energy said the new standards, taken together, will save American households and businesses nearly $1 trillion over 30 years, and save the average family $100 a year or more through lower utility bills. The changes will also cut greenhouse gas emissions, the agency said, by an amount equivalent to taking 18 million gas-burning cars off the road over that time.
However, the changes have come under withering attack by Republican lawmakers who claim the new rules will make appliances costlier in the short term. Late last year several representatives introduced legislation with names including the “Hands Off Our Home Appliances Act,” the “Liberty in Laundry Act” and the “Stop Unaffordable Dishwasher Standards Act.”
The proposed legislation was just the latest salvo in a long running fight waged by conservative groups and politicians who claim the standards limit consumer choice. Republican politicians and their allies have accused the administration of planning to ban gas stoves, for example, and conservative groups have blamed environmental rules for what it claimed was the decline of the American dishwasher.
Household appliances are a big deal for energy use and for climate change. Homes and commercial buildings consume 40 percent of the energy used in the United States, and most of that energy is used by appliances and equipment like water heaters. Generating that electricity produces a lot of greenhouse gas emissions, which are causing the world to warm dangerously.
As one of the largest users of energy in American homes, more efficient residential water heaters are expected to bring the largest savings ever from a single D.O.E. rule standard. The new rules would shift most new electric water heaters to heat-pump technology, which typically uses less than half the amount of electricity that many older models use. The new rules also require gas-burning water heaters to meet more stringent standards.
Over 30 years of shipments, the new standards are expected to save Americans $124 billion on energy bills, and reduce as much planet-warming carbon dioxide emissions as 43 million homes would generate in a year. Replacing traditional water heaters with electric heat-pump water heaters would save households approximately $1,800 on their utility bills, on average, over the life of the appliance, the D.O.E. said.

5 Signs Your Geyser Needs Professional Servicing: How to Prevent Major Issues
5 Signs Your Geyser Needs Professional Servicing: How to Prevent Major Issues
Your geyser is an essential part of your home, ensuring that you have access to hot water when you need it. However, over time, it can develop issues that affect its performance and even pose safety risks. Here’s a Geyser Repair Checklist to help you spot the early signs of water heater issues and prevent expensive repairs.
1. Inconsistent Hot Water Supply
If your geyser is failing to provide a steady supply of hot water, this could be a sign of a deeper issue. Water heater maintenance is key to ensuring your geyser works efficiently. Faulty thermostats, broken heating elements, or sediment build-up could cause this inconsistency.
2. Strange Noises
Hearing banging, popping, or rumbling sounds from your geyser? These sounds often occur due to sediment accumulation in the tank, causing overheating and eventual damage. Regular geyser servicing can remove this sediment build-up and ensure the smooth operation of your water heater.
3. Water Leaks
A leaking geyser is a serious issue that requires immediate attention. Leaks could be due to damaged pipes, worn-out seals, or cracks in the tank itself. If you notice puddles around your geyser, it’s time to consult with a professional for home appliance repair.
4. Rusty or Discolored Water
Rusty or discolored water coming from your geyser indicates corrosion inside the tank or the pipes. This is often caused by rusted heating elements or mineral deposits. Regular geyser servicing can help prevent further corrosion and maintain the quality of your water.
5. High Energy Bills
If your energy bills have increased dramatically, it could be due to your geyser working inefficiently. This is often caused by issues like sediment build-up, thermostat malfunction, or improper insulation. Ensuring energy efficiency through proper servicing and maintenance can save you money in the long run.
How to Prevent Major Geyser Issues
Regular Maintenance: Follow a home maintenance guide for your geyser to prevent small issues from escalating into major repairs. Annual servicing is essential for optimal performance.

It’s recommended to get your geyser serviced at least once a year to ensure it operates efficiently. Regular servicing can help prevent small issues from turning into major problems.
2. What are the common signs that my geyser needs servicing?
The most common signs include inconsistent hot water supply, strange noises from the geyser, water leaks, discolored or rusty water, and higher-than-usual energy bills. These can indicate a problem with your geyser that needs professional attention.
3. Can I repair my geyser myself?
While some minor repairs like changing the thermostat or cleaning the filter can be done by homeowners, it’s best to hire a professional for complex issues. Attempting DIY repairs may lead to further damage or safety hazards.
4. Why is my geyser making strange noises?
Noises like popping, rumbling, or banging typically occur due to sediment build-up inside the tank. Over time, sediment from hard water can accumulate, leading to overheating and damage. Regular servicing can address this issue.
5. How do I know if my geyser is energy-efficient?
An energy-efficient geyser should maintain a steady water temperature without using excess electricity. If your energy bills have suddenly increased, your geyser might not be operating efficiently. A professional servicing check can identify issues that may be affecting energy efficiency.

Upgrade Your Home With High Efficiency Electric Water Heater Options
Is your trusty old water heater starting to show its age? Are you tired of skyrocketing energy bills? Then it might be time to consider an upgrade to a high efficiency electric water heater. Not only are these models kinder to your wallet, but they're also better for the environment. Let's explore some of the top contenders in the world of electric water heating:
Tumblr media
Heat Pump Water Heaters:
These innovative water heating appliances take the crown for efficiency. It acts like a refrigerator in reverse, capturing heat from the surrounding air and transferring it to the water tank. This translates to significant energy savings, often reaching up to 70% compared to traditional electric heaters. They're best suited for warmer climates where consistent ambient heat is available. An ENERGY STAR-certified heat pump water heater is a great place to start your search.
Tankless Water Heaters:
If you're looking for an on-demand solution, a tankless water heater might be your perfect match. Unlike traditional models that store hot water in a tank, tankless units heat water only when you need it. This eliminates standby heat loss, a major source of wasted energy in traditional models. Tankless units are ideal for smaller homes or those with limited hot water usage. However, they may require an upgrade to your electrical service to handle the high initial power demands.
High-Efficiency Storage Water Heaters:
Even traditional storage water heaters have come a long way in terms of efficiency. Look for models with features like thick insulation, self-cleaning elements, and advanced thermostats. These features can significantly reduce standby heat loss and improve overall efficiency. While not as groundbreaking as heat pump models, they offer a familiar and affordable option with improved energy performance.
By reducing your energy consumption, you'll not only save money on your utility bills but also contribute to a greener future. So, ditch the outdated water heater and embrace a hot water solution that's good for your wallet and the planet!
