Paul Allen's extensive collection of the Flying Heritage Museum is sold

Three and a half years after his death, another of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's passionate projects - the extensive collection of military and aviation artifacts that was housed at the Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum in Everett, Washington - was sold out of state.

Air Current magazine reported at the end of last week that the entire museum's collection was sold "in full".

"Many of the projects are being boxed to be sent to your new home while flying aircraft are being prepared for travel around the country," the magazine said on its Facebook page. "One man's dream has come to an end, but another man's dream has just begun."

The Plane and Pilot publication said that the transaction, the details of which are not yet known, is intended to dissolve the previous exhibition hall at Everett Airport near Seattle, which had been closed since May 2020. Reportedly, the aircraft collection is moving east within the U.S.

The new owner of the collection is Steuart Walton, grandson of Walmart founder Sam Walton, according to Scramble, a publication of the Dutch Aviation Society.

Walton is a co-founder of Runway Group, a holding company with investments in northwestern Arkansas; and the co-founder and president of Game Composites, a company that designs and builds small composite material aircraft.

He serves on the board of directors of Walmart and the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, among other organizations, and is a licensed pilot and aircraft collector. Its net worth was estimated at US$ 300 million.

Paul Allen's estate holding company, Vulcan Inc., refused to confirm reports about the sale for now.

Since Allen's death due to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at the age of 65 in 2018, his sister and administrator of his property, Jodi Allen, dramatically transformed Vulcan by transferring several stakes - including the space enterprise Stratolaunch; privileged property in Los Angeles and Hawaii; and Allen's superyacht Octopus, who played a role in the billionaire's deep ocean exploration projects, which seems to have been sold to Swedish billionaire Roger Samuelsson.

Vulcan also closed facilities such as the Seattle Cinerama cinema, the Living Computers Museum + Labs and the Flying Heritage museum, largely due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Allen began collecting airplanes and other military artifacts in the 1990s. The collection of 71 planes and vehicles from the United States, Great Britain, Germany, Japan and the Soviet Union is unique, as most planes can fly and most tanks can be piloted. The restoration team “ strives to make the operations and appearance as original as possible for the moment when the aircraft, tank or other machine was first used,” according to the museum's website.

Among the jewels of the Flying Heritage Collection are a British Havilland Mosquito fighter-bomber, built at the end of World War II; a Soviet-era Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovik attack aircraft; a German Junkers Ju-87 Stuka dive bomber; and the White Knight transport plane that helped SpaceShipOne win the $10 million X prize for private spaceflight in 2004 with Allen's support.

Two days before learning that she would lose her job, Lissa Gilliam spent hundreds of dollars online on baby products. A 37-year-old expectant mother, Ms. Gilliam had planned to ask local parents in Seattle for used strollers and secondhand onesies in a bid to reduce waste. But as the coronavirus pandemic ravaged the area, new items delivered in boxes seemed a safer bet. She figured she could afford the splurge, earning $50 an hour as a full-time contractor designing educational curriculums for a nonprofit. But then, on April 2, her employer slashed her hours and told her that her contract would end in early May — a few weeks before she is to give birth. Suddenly, like many others, Ms. Gilliam became hyperaware of her expenses. She and her husband, a high school physics teacher, now take a painful daily tally of their financial priorities: Is that $5 monthly web magazine subscription really necessary? How much does watering the garden cost? When will they need to tap their paltry savings? “We’re OK for now,” she said. “But the bottom may fall out from under us.” As millions of Americans lose jobs, take pay cuts, close businesses and absorb family members into their homes, they are being forced to rethink where their money goes. Even before the scramble for new jobs can begin, people are cajoling creditors, looking for gig work or simply cutting back to get through the first few disorienting weeks. “An economic shock like this could have a long-term impact on people who have traditionally felt like they were being cautious, that they weren’t profligate with their money, but didn’t have to worry about paying for rent or affording food,” said Stephanie Aaronson, the director of economic studies at the Brookings Institution. “They might have more debt, which will make it harder to spend in the future, or they might just feel less secure, which could boost savings and potentially dampen the recovery.” Ms. Gilliam and her husband are waiting for Washington State to make jobless benefits available to contractors through a federal assistance program, and hope to take advantage of a state program for maternity aid once their daughter is born. A $15,000 construction project planned for the rear of their house is on hold. They canceled their gym membership, their Hulu streaming service, multiple newspapers and even the Adobe Acrobat software that Ms. Gilliam uses for design work. On the whole, Ms. Aaronson said, household finances “were in relatively good condition as of six weeks ago — they were actually pretty healthy.” Now, she said, “a much broader swath of households are experiencing a complete loss of income compared to what we typically see in a recession.” Before the pandemic, Carol Cruz’s private health insurance plan cost her $840 a month — up from less than $500 four years ago. The bill ate up most of her $1,200 monthly paycheck, exceeding even the $600 monthly payment on the house she shares with her husband and their 17-year-old granddaughter in Tulare, Calif. On March 29, she was furloughed from her part-time job as a mental health therapist until at least the end of May. Other than the state unemployment benefits she hopes to receive soon, Ms. Cruz, 62, no longer has an income. So she got on the phone for at least three hours a day, asking for leniency from the health insurance provider, her mortgage lender and the credit union that holds the loan for her husband’s Chevrolet truck. All offered her more flexible terms, including 90-day grace periods and pay-what-you-can options. (Some creditors, she said, were less willing to negotiate.) The adjustments help keep the bills manageable, Ms. Cruz said. But her grocery costs have doubled, now that the price of eggs has soared and her granddaughter is no longer having free lunches at school. “I don’t know about my future,” Ms. Cruz said. “I’m not letting myself think about tomorrow, just about whether we have food today and money in the bank.” But some people, many of whom have never seriously budgeted, are now mapping out strict spending schedules for the next few months. After being furloughed in mid-March from her bartending and serving job at a Minneapolis concert hall, Krissy Calbert, 26, went from earning $300 in tips some nights to having no income as she waited for government aid. “It was two weeks of just panic — I was just going off the groceries I already had, trying to ration until money came in,” she said. “You get really creative. You eat little half meals, and you experiment with your seasonings and condiments to try to forget that you’re eating the same thing over and over.” Earlier this month, Ms. Calbert began receiving a weekly infusion of $1,100 from the state. She is now trying to reschedule when monthly bills are due so she can space out the payments: $600 for rent, $75 for her phone, up to $120 for utilities, $60 for streaming services, $200 for credit cards, plus other expenses. “I’m trying to get all of my credit card payments into the same week, so I can have a credit card week, a rent week, a phone week,” Ms. Calbert said. She has switched her grocery shopping from Target to Aldi, where, she said, she can afford to splurge on fresh produce and protein. CM-390: CREATIVE MEDIA INTERNSHIP - UPDATE #1

Aloha and welcome to the Tumblr page for my CM-390: Creative Media Internship at the University of Hawai’i - West Oahu! I will be routinely giving updates on my internship progress with Tuned Originals during my 2019 summer break.

Tuned Originals is an automotive and lifestyle event company started by one of my good friends Wayne Raqueno. I first met Wayne through another car event company that we were both associated with, Hot Import Nights. He was one of the co-owners, and I served as Creative Director between April 2014 and August 2016. After leaving the national car show scene for a few years, Wayne started Tuned Originals with its inaugural event at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, WA in the summer of 2018. After a successful show in the Pacific Northwest, Wayne wanted to expand to more cities across the United States in 2019.

I wanted to do my internship with Tuned Originals because I consider Wayne one of my mentors, and he needed my assistance. He is currently undergoing some complications with one of his eyes and his vision is not 100 percent.

During my internship with Tuned Originals, Wayne had some specific goals that he wanted me to accomplish:

Create all Tuned Originals promotional graphics for print, web, and social media.

Design, create and maintain Tuned Originals website.

Capture video and photography content during Tuned Originals events for posting on social media platforms and website.

Coordinate with sponsorship companies and vendors to create supplemental promotional content for print and social media.

TUNED ORIGINALS SPONSORSHIP PACKAGE

In order to attract more sponsors for the upcoming Tuned Originals events, I was tasked by Wayne Raqueno to create a proposal package that we could submit to potential sponsors, which would include what Tuned Originals is about, reasons for choosing Tuned Originals, the competitive landscape, the 2019 event schedule, event elements, and the different levels of sponsorship opportunities. He wanted it to be professional in appearance and have a cohesive design, yet contain images and elements that would let potential sponsors know what Tuned Originals was all about.

Using the color palette above and the 26-degree slant integrated within the Tuned Originals logo, I created a 5-page “Tuned Originals Sponsorship Package” utilizing Photoshop. In order to make sure all the text aligned with 26-degree slanted spacing within the design, I made the appropriate adjustments to kerning, spacing, tracking and/or leading. For uniformity, I included the same size logo on each of the pages, including the cover page and the back page. If the inside pages are lined up side-by-side, it forms one continuous seamless design. Each image within the sponsorship package can be easily swapped out to target an individual market, making it effortlessly customizable. The sponsorship package below is tailored to specifically target potential sponsors within the Seattle/Pacific Northwest market.

HUFFINES SUBARU GRAND OPENING QUARTER PAGE PRINTED FLYER

Huffines Subaru was one of the main sponsors for the Tuned Originals Dallas event that was held on Saturday, April 6, 2019. Huffines Subaru contacted Wayne for some assistance with some graphic design work for a printed flyer for the grand opening of their new facility in Corinth, Texas. Wayne felt this was an excellent opportunity for me to further network with a reputable business on the mainland and expand my portfolio with actual work, and I completely agreed. Wayne connected me with Anthony Reich, the General Sales Manager of Huffines Subaru.

With the design of the flyer, I wanted to incorporate some of the blue colors within the Huffines logo. I also wanted to include an image of the new Huffines Subaru facility, as well as some of the featured events and activities during the grand opening. Anthony and the team at Huffines Subaru were very happy with the flyer design, and I was wired $100 for my services.

SOLDIERCON X TUNED ORIGINALS COLORADO SPRINGS PRINTED HALF PAGE FLYER

SoldierCon is a comic convention and car show organization that holds events in appreciation for our nation’s armed forces. Their events are normally held on military bases across the United States and combine professional comic book artists, pop culture vendors, cosplayers, and highly modified vehicles. Tuned Originals was asked to help out with the car show portion of the event, as well as provide assistance with promotions and marketing. Being a retired military veteran myself, this was a no-brainer for me to get involved.

I was tasked to design one side of the printed half page flyer for the event. SoldierCon had their own graphic designer that would design the other side.

TUNED ORIGINALS SEATTLE PRINTED QUARTER PAGE FLYER

Tuned Originals Seattle is scheduled for Saturday, July 6, 2019. It will be the second time Tuned Originals will be making their appearance at Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington, which is approximately 45 minutes north of Seattle.

On May 22, 2019, I was in a conference call with Tuned Originals Owner/President Wayne Raqueno and B.J. Ta, the Chief Business Development Officer of Mint Media LLC, one of the main sponsors for the Tuned Originals Seattle show. We discussed promotional strategies for the upcoming event on Saturday, July 6, 2019 at Evergreen Speedway. Because B.J. Ta has an established network of people locally, he has the ability to distribute printed flyers to different businesses within the Seattle/Pacific Northwest area.

I was tasked to design a double-sided quarter page flyer for Tuned Originals Seattle that would be sent to print, and mailed out to B.J. Ta for immediate distribution.
