Perhaps he avoids it because of how often his dreams turn to nightmares. Perhaps he hates how lonely it feels to wake up. Perhaps he hates how the dark seems to creep at the edges of him before he has even closed his eyes. Maybe the only times he truly dreams is when he pretends, for that moment between asleep and awake, that he will open his eyes to someone next to him. 

Or perhaps he just needs to sleep.

Week #41

Is becoming addicted to vitamin D even a thing?

Early autumn allows me to enjoy a long walk around the city park. It is becoming slowly cooler, and the trees’ leaves are yet to change its characteristic green colour before falling dry—like dead flat carcasses—over the grass. Soon enough, I find myself a seat—a decaying almost greenish bench��in front of the lagoon located in the middle of this park. A flock of ducks swimming and squawking around enjoying their last days in these grey waters—grey as a consequence of recent temperatures dropping—before migrating to… where? I wonder now as I write these last words, where they go, the ducks, when it gets all frozen over.

Meanwhile my rotten brain keeps itself busy thinking about those ducks, early autumn’s sun comforts me twice: the direct incidence of its rays over my pale—nuclear pale—skin, warms my body as a consequence of matter being in contact with a source of radiation; while the silver reflection as a result of the solar dance in the restless waters of the lagoon, comforts my being—immaterially speaking—like a hug from a person you cherish.

The view displayed before my eyes, made possible only by the sun's presence, liberated me from the burdens of daily life. It freed me from all mental and emotional weight, allowing me to escape the hustle and bustle of my routine. This serene moment even sparked a feeling of contentment—an emotion that my weary mind had struggled to provide lately.

I hope that at this point you have not given up reading. I hope this has not become too corny for you—my bad. I’m not corny at all, I’m truly not, but I feel that in states of sadness the mind looks for exits, and many times corniness appears in my mind like an open floodgate, like a hand that reaches out to grab me by the neck and pull me—almost suffocating me—from the quagmire that can be my mind.

Anyway, as the sun wraps me in a comfortable, cosy cocoon I wonder whether with the progression of autumn and the consequent reduction in sunlight—if not its total absence on cloudy days—I would become miserable again. I wonder if this early October sun would be enough for each of my billions of little cells to catch the vitamin D needed to get through the entire autumn—and even winter.

And finally, I wonder whether addiction to taking synthetic vitamin D pills is a real thing and if anyone—in the history of humanity—has died from vitamin D overdoses, and if these processed vitamins will hug me as warmly as the sun does in these moments.

I wrote 656 words @mega-aulover. My word count will be lowish for the next month as I'm finishing up/editing a WIP I worked on last year as part of The Dead WIP's Society.
