Parkinson’s Disease and the Internet of Things
Healthcare and the internet of things.
Introduction
The healthcare industry has been evolving to meet the needs of the rapidly changing digital environment. The industry has utilised the use of emerging technologies to enhance productivity and ultimately improve patient experience and quality of life.
In this blog, I will be focusing on the Internet of things or IoT. So, what is the internet of things? The basic concept behind IoT is that everyday objects interconnect with each other through a networked system. These objects often are equipped with ubiquitous intelligence (Xia et al., 2012). The healthcare industry used IoT extensively, creating its branch called the medical internet of things (mIoT). This technology implements wireless sensors in medical equipment, combining with the internet integrating, hospital, patient, and medical records, promoting a new medical model (Hu, Shen, and Xie, 2013).
The treatment of Parkinson's disease incorporating the medical internet of things will be at the heart of this blog. PD is a condition in which parts of the brain become progressively damaged over many years. One of the most detrimental and noticeable symptoms of this disease is the involuntary shaking of particular parts of the body, also known as a tremor (NHS Choices, 2019).
Theory behind the Technology
The underlying treatments using IoT to treat PD are through wearable technology, home monitoring, and digital versions of standardised clinical tests. Wearable sensors are being specifically designed to capture disease traits that are prevalent in PD such as, tremor episodes, gait patterns, and activity levels. These devices can be hooked up to the internet through data aggregators, where the information is sent to medical and research databases and is then sent back to the patient in the form of visual and other sensorial cues. (Pasluosta et al., 2012). The relationship between IoT and the healthcare system can be shown in figure 1.
The traditional treatment of PD patients must attend clinical appointments to assess their postural instability and tremor level. The costs of this involve patient transportation, consultation, and hospital resources. The opportunity to perform at-home procedures using sensors and the IoT would reduce these costs significantly. Also, standard assessments of PD from a clinician can often be subjective. This makes the patients’ health dependant on the clinician’s experience and expertise. If a form of sensory technology can be implemented, more objective results may be found (Romero, Chatterjee, and Armentano, 2016). An IoT remote treatment model can be shown in figure 2.
Albani et al. (2019) researched the effectiveness of a multi-sensor approach in treating PD. These strategies aimed to reduce the frequency of follow-up appointments for PD patients. And improve the accuracy of results. They concluded that the proposed solution of sensor wearable technology significantly improved the assessment of PD. Providing a decentralised, more accurate, and cost-effective method of treating PD.
Application of technology
After consulting the academic theory surrounding the IoT and its role in the medical internet of things, it is important to examine which institutions have been successful in implementing this technology. Intel has partnered with the Michael Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s research to find tech-enabled solutions to PD. The project aimed to produce a mobile application and IoT platform to support large case studies of objective sampled sensory data for people with PD (Cohen, Bataille, and Martig, 2016). Intel used on-the-shelf wrist-worn smartwatches and built an application around them which is downloaded on a smartphone and calibrated with the watch. These devices also share data with the Fox Foundation servers. The smartwatches served two functions: to track patient activity, tremors and pass data to the ‘enterprise data hub’ for big data analysis. The Fox mobile app is a big part of this product. The layout of the application is shown in figure 3. The mobile app allows users to input information about their medication and medication schedule. The data is stored in the cloud for analysis and storage (Intel corporation 2015).
Challenges
With any promising technological outbreak and achievement, challenges always present themselves. The medical internet of things and the treatment of PD is no different. Dimitrov (2016) highlighted five key capabilities a leading IoT system must have:
Simple connectivity, making it easier to connect devices and scale through cloud base services for data analysis.
Easy device management, improve asset availability, and reduce maintenance costs.
Information Ingestion, intelligently transform and store IoT data.
Informative analytics, make informed decisions based on large volumes of IoT data to optimise procedures. And to apply real time analytics to monitor current conditions and respond accordingly.
Reduced risk, react to notifications, and isolate any incidents generated from the company environment from any device/console.
Reflections
Reflecting on this blog discussion it is clear that the IoT/ mIoT can have a positive impact on the battle against PD. In particular, the use of wearable technology. And how this can collaborate with the IoT to produce objective results, making cost savings for health organisations all over the world. With an aging population, PD is likely to become more prominent. An effective IoT system allows for a decentralised approach making significant improvements in Hospital efficiency and patient conditions. The Intel and Fox app is exciting, and it's fascinating to see where this sort of technology can go and the differences it can make to people's lives in the health industry.

it’s pre-cosmos/prowl/soundwave! if you’re inclined to read everything preceding this, you can do so here. if you don’t want to? the tl;dr is that prowl ended up on sanctuary station and he, cosmos, and soundwave are in the maddeningly slow process of getting together.
this fic features absolutely terrible decisions, the most important of which is trying to make important life choices while drinking. anyone still uses the citrus scale, this fic is the cybertronian equivalent of a lime.
five half-lies and one full truth
1.
If anyone asked (and he were inclined to actually answer) Soundwave would report that he didn’t remember who made the first move. He supposed, lying in a tangle of cables and the scent of ozone, he would have to tell Cosmos the truth. They both would.
The truth was Prowl, optic bright with copper-infused engex and a sudden burst of bravery that would have put Optimus Prime to shame, had leaned over the desk and kissed him square on the mouth.
“Do you think…”
Soundwave had been in the process of taking another sip of engex, but as Prowl spoke, he paused leaving the glass frozen halfway between the desk and his mouth.
Prowl’s mind was…duller than usual. Toned down. And a little muddled.
But Soundwave still liked it.
Soundwave waited as Prowl mulled over his next words. It wasn’t impolite to take a drink when someone was thinking, was it?
Soundwave wasn’t sure. He could count the number of times he’d been a social drinker on one servo, and each and every instance he had been expected to sit on the other side of a desk and agree with whenever Ratbat said. That kind of social drinking wasn’t particularly conducive to actually drinking.
Hm.
“Things could have ended up differently, if I were you and you were me?”
“Yes.” A simple answer, though he knew that wasn’t the question Prowl meant to ask.
Prowl groaned and took another swig of engex. Soundwave could see the engex crackling in his mind. Watching it was…
Soundwave looked away.
“If I were a Decepticon…” Prowl glared at his engex. “The war would’ve been over four million years ago.”
Soundwave nodded. He didn’t think Prowl actually wanted him to agree: calling someone like Prowl a Decepticon was a surefire way to get a punch in the face.
“That’s all I wanted to do,” Prowl muttered. “End the war. Save lives. Preferably both.”
Before Soundwave could respond, Prowl started talking again.
“Sorry. I’m not good company when I’m overcharged, am I.”
It wasn’t a question.
Soundwave looked up to watch the stormy clouds circling his head. Prowl frowned, and the scar on the bridge of his nose—
Soundwave heard his fans click on.
He looked away.
“I do not mind. Your—”
“My mind is nice,” Prowl said, though there was no malice in his words. He sounded confused, as though he had never heard those words applied to him before. That was strange—Soundwave knew for a fact that during their time as a gestalt, the Constructicons paid his mind compliments. Vocally and often.
Prowl finished off the glass and set it on Soundwave’s desk.
“Why?”
“Why what?”
“My mind.” Prowl rested his elbows on the desk and leaned forward. Soundwave forced himself to meet Prowl’s optic. “Why do you like it so much?”
“I cannot tell you,” Soundwave said. “You know that.”
“But you can show me.”

Prowl was the one who made the first move, but it was Soundwave who knocked the desk over. He had a moment to feel equal parts stupidly embarrassed and foolishly emotional, but any misgivings were quickly quashed by the feeling of Prowl’s mouth on his own.
They fell, tangled, to the floor. Prowl’s engine kicked up a notch, drowning out the sound of Soundwave’s gasp.
And now he was thinking about the desk. Soundwave pulled away to follow Prowl’s gaze—he was looking at the overturned furniture, thinking about flipping tables of all things, how Tumbler used to joke about bolting his desk down except Prowl was never sure if it was a joke or not and—
Soundwave kissed him again.
The distraction worked, but now Prowl was thinking about him, which was a wholly intimidating thought. Without a direct connection (which Soundwave really, really wanted, and was beginning to suspect Prowl really, really wanted as well) the beautiful lines and angles were fuzzy, muddled by noise and engex.
Soundwave loved them
He canceled the battle protocols that had activated when Prowl lunged and was treated to the sight of Prowl perched on top of him. One hand traced the edges of his tape deck—did he know it was sensitive, or was it just something to touch?
Soundwave imagined Prowl’s hand in him. Touching circuits no mech outside of his cassettes were supposed to see, much less touch, tracing the contours of his docking ports.
He shuddered, and sat up to mouth the cabling on Prowl’s neck and was rewarded with a gasp that felt…oddly deliberate. Genuine, but unsurprised.
He blinked.
Number cruncher floated across both their minds.
Were it not for the hot flash of red embarrassment that followed the phrase, Soundwave would never have considered it an insult.
Oh.
“You know what I am going to do,” Soundwave mumbled into Prowl’s neck. “You can predict it.”
“Within a—” Prowl yelped. He hadn’t seen Soundwave lift a hand to caress the sensory panels affixed to his back, Soundwave realized. “Reasonable margin of error.”
“If you can see it.”Soundwave felt the paneling twitch under his hand. Prowl nodded, and Soundwave tasted the sensation of being touched in the back of his throat. “What am I going to do next?”
“Uh.” Again, Soundwave felt the weight of Prowl’s stare come to rest on his frame.
Soundwave hoped he would remember this in the morning. The line between lowered inhibitions and stupid drunk was a thin one, but neither he nor Prowl had ingested enough engex to cross it.
Probably.
“Um.”
Soundwave traced the length of the sensors on Prowl’s back, an action that elicited a hastily-silenced moan. “Do you really want a comprehensive breakdown of your potential actions?”
“Maybe later.” Soundwave drank in the sharp certainty of Prowl’s mind. He’d never given Soundwave explicit permission to snoop, but at this particular moment…Prowl didn’t seem to care. He wondered, for a moment, if Prowl could become to his anchor.
His Ravage.
His Megatron.
He had hoped Cosmos might be willing to accept that role, but Cosmos was…ubiquitous. Cosmos was everywhere, and nowhere, too easily able to slip between Soundwave’s fingers.
Prowl was clarity in a sea of static. And Cosmos was the static, cocooning him and caressing his spark, fierce and gentle and—
Cosmos was going to hate them.
Or worse…he would be hurt.
Soundwave kissed the edge of Prowl’s jaw and wished could stop thinking. Just for a moment.
They should stop. Right now. Stop and pull away and come back to this when Cosmos was around, and then they could be sensible about this.
Whatever was going on between them, Soundwave didn’t want to ruin it. Prowl didn’t want to ruin it.
None of them wanted to ruin it, and Soundwave and Prowl were about to do just that.

“My turn,” Prowl whispered, and raised a brow as Soundwave obediently leaned back, feeling the chill of unheated metal against his plating.
“Told you to stay out of my head,” Prowl muttered, though his optic widened when Soundwave smiled.
“You don’t mean it. Not now.”
“Tomorrow, when I do,” Prowl leaned forward until their breaths came together in a dizzying, tantalizing mix of near-sensory overload. “What then?”
“Your thoughts will be your own.”
Prowl was far too heavy for Soundwave to even consider attempting to sit up, but he had no real inclination to try.
“We should—”
Soundwave heard a click and realized with a jolt of embarrassment that it had been his own interface protocols coming online. Prowl blinked, but didn’t seem particularly dissuaded.
He tried again.
“We should stop?”
Prowl froze.
“Cosmos,” was all Soundwave said, and Prowl nodded. But he didn’t move to get up, and Soundwave didn’t push the issue. Soundwave manually canceled the protocols and thanked the stars his cables hadn’t already unspooled—manually coaxing them back into his frame might have been slightly more embarrassment than he could handle.
“If you are willing,” Prowl said slowly. “I would still like to know how you see things.”
A little too quickly, Soundwave nodded.

“…oh.”
Soundwave felt his lips twitch. Prowl had gone still on top of him as his mind struggled to process the new wave of sensory data. Soundwave didn’t dare move or touch Prowl for fear of eliciting more sensation than his processor could comfortably handle.
“It’s a lot.”
Prowl steadied himself on Soundwave’s chassis, and nodded. Soundwave peeled back another layer of firewalls.
“It is.”
The tenuous connection between them was just enough for Soundwave to get a glance at the blurry lines and numbers. Idly, Soundwave tugged at the cable connecting him to Prowl—as much as he would have relished the chance to be invited into Prowl’s mind and spend a few blissful minutes immersed in angles and pure data, this was for Prowl.
The very notion of someone (Prowl) wanting to see in his mind had Soundwave feeling a unique mixture of elation and nauseating anxiety. His fuel tank cramped painfully at the mere notion of rejection, but Prowl—
“Shh.” More gently than he thought Prowl—anyone, save for perhaps Ravage—capable of, Prowl touched the spot on his armor just above his fuel tank. “I understand. I think.”
Immediately, Soundwave relaxed. Several layers of stress-induced color that Soundwave had forgotten about faded. As he looked up at Prowl, the world became dizzyingly clear. Soundwave allowed Prowl to bypass every firewall save for the ones keeping guard over his vital functions. Mentally, he lay back and watched Prowl peruse his datafiles. Amusement zipped across their connection as he realized Prowl was going through his most recent memories, lingering over his reaction to Prowl predicting Soundwave’s movements.
Prowl frowned.
The colors snapped back into existence.
“I’m not going to be Megatron,” Prowl snapped.

“It is not like that.” But Prowl knew that, didn’t he. He was in Soundwave’s head. At that moment, Prowl knew him better than any mech ever had. Except—
“Stop thinking about him.”
“Apologies.” But he hadn’t yanked Soundwave’s cable out of his waist port. Desperately, Soundwave clung to that fact.
“I’m not here to be your leader,” Prowl snapped, saying the word leader like someone might say the word incurable, late-stage cosmic rust. “No. Full stop.”
“Not like that.” But they all had been leaders, hadn’t they? Ravage had led him from the Dead End, showed him a new way of existing that wasn’t just survival. And Megatron had led him far, far beyond what he once would have deemed acceptable. “It helps,” Soundwave offered. “To have someone to focus on. Someone strong. Unique.”
“You said you would stay out of my head.” Prowl’s voice was quiet.
“And I will.”
To Soundwave, the truth smelled like ozone. And Prowl knew it.
Prowl snorted.
“You really like my mind, don’t you.”
Dumbly, Soundwave nodded.

Soundwave felt Prowl give in.
He watched as Prowl leaned forward to rest his elbows on the glass of Soundwave’s chest. Not for the first time, Soundwave was glad the cassettes were out for the night and wouldn’t be expecting him back at the habsuite.
“We shouldn’t have done this.” Prowl made no move to get up. Soundwave watched as he wrapped the cable around his finger, then let it unwind. “Not without…”
Prowl gave up all pretense of respectability and slumped against Soundwave.
“This is hard,” Prowl mumbled into Soundwave’s shoulder. Soundwave hummed an acknowledgement. “I don’t know what to do.”
“Neither do I.”
He didn’t feel particularly better after admitting it. Enough of the engex had worn off that they were beginning to feel tired—and more than a little awkward.
He wondered how many times they would have to do this dance of engex and lowered inhibitions, only to be countered by the uncomfortable reality of sobriety. It wasn’t that getting drunk with Prowl wasn’t nice (in more ways than one) but…
Soundwave moved to sit up. Prowl groaned his assent and began to slide off, but Soundwave shook his head.
Prowl was very nearly too big to comfortably sit in Soundwave’s lap.
He didn’t mind.
“Tell me,” Soundwave said, and Prowl looked up. “What am I going to do next?”
“Oh.” Prowl blinked, registering the question Soundwave had pushed over their connection. “Oh. Er, yes. I suppose.”
He tasted like gritty engex.
But Prowl liked gritty engex, and Soundwave liked Prowl, so Soundwave supposed it was alright.

- 9/13 - called four times. sounded manic / high? clearly upset about the lockdown , asked why necessary. - 9/14 - called seven times. added to dna. - 9/16 - mm asked about. evasive, wouldn't give me answers.
gwen scans the photographs on the wall, discovering that the largest and most loved section is of the wormwood student body, isla with various valedictorians, teams, and clubs, all beaming.
finally, gwen and ken destroy the security cameras before leaving. note that this doesn't destroy the security footage.
nigel, emmet, and raf in the woods - september 16, 2020 ( tw hallucinations , drugging )
nigel purchases a drone, and is photographed carrying his drone down king street
nigel, raf, and emmet find some blood on the train tracks
while using the drone to attempt to see things from above, it crashes in a tree
hallucinations/drugging tw when they attempt to retrieve it, they smell something strange for a moment before they all feel symptoms.
- emmet feels her anxiety ratchet up and her heart beat quicken. emmet also faints. - raf feels intense paranoia, hears a twig snap, and swears they're being watched. - nigel sees his dead father in the woods.

skip, ava, and adri with a phonebook - september 16, 2020
attempting to find someone related to the last person to go missing on sams list, cary richard
using the phonebook and cary's instagram tags, they manage to contact his sister, edith richard. ava befriends her, and edith mentions she's found support on the forum site sam got banned from by cadence.
they also call joel davenport, as he was on isla yi's dna list, who is the district attorney for montgomery county. he kindly asks them to ask his assistant, antonia lloyd, for an appointment with him, however antonia proves to be quite rude and books them in for three months from now.
after doing some research on emmett parker and a bullshit article he wrote about the missing youths, they decided it was best not to call him, even though he was, also, on the dna list.
daniel, gwen, and kennedy called to isla yi’s office - september 17, 2020
daniel, gwen, and kennedy receive an email calling them to meet isla yi in her office, more likely than not for getting caught on camera breaking into her office and destroying the security cameras.
before everyone else, isla brings in daniel and insinuates his family (wheldrake locals) might be in danger, and that they're welcome to move onto campus for their own safety if he'd like them to. she seems genuinely fearful.
when the others are brought in, isla asks who sent them. once they assure her no one sent them, but instead they feel like the administration has left them in the dark, isla acquiesces and reveals what she knows.
isla yi attempted to investigate the missing persons, too, but an unnamed woman made a deal with her; if she stuck to her business, no wormwood student would go missing. however, when she saw this woman again after sam was found, isla realized immediately that it had to do with the string of disappearances, and that the deal had been renegged upon.
isla still believes that keeping the peace is the best option, and that the entire town cannot be trusted.
as punishment for breaking the cameras, ken, gwen, and daniel have all been assigned to work at the it department, performing data entry for a transfer of systems.
raf, maia, and tony in the biochem lab - september 17, 2020 ( tw drug mentions )
after some stumbles, they conducted a mass spec test on a sample of the gas they acquired from raf's shirt the night of the drugging, as well as a liebermann reagent on the gas sample and on the nardyll
the nardyll looked as you'd expect it to; like an mao inhibitor.
the gas in the liebermann reagent was undetermined, however it was closest in color to mdma or dmt.
from rafil's own experiences, he concluded the gas was, most definitely, not mdma, so it was most likely dmt.
the mass spec results were a little harder to decipher, however there were some similarities to mao inhibitors.
according to maia's google results, dmt can be injected, inhaled, or ingested, and is also an important component in ayahuasca. both mdma and dmt are on the long list of drugs that interact with mao inhibitors
raf also remembers from his own research/experiences that dmt can cause hallucinations, increased heart beat, dilated pupils and increased blood pressure.
nigel, skip, and jake drone retrieval mission - september 18, 2020 ( drug use tw, hallucinations tw, drugging tw )
after acquiring gas masks, nigel, skip, and jake try to re-enter the forest to retrieve the drone.
soon after entering, however, they come across a young man who runs away from them. jake manages to catch up to him first, only to realize the young man is armed and now holding him at gunpoint.
the young man seems afraid, however, and is shaking heavily, under the influence of something. all three students remove their masks in an attempt to talk him down.
the young man, davey, collapses, and in an attempt to slip the gun out of davey's grip, jake accidentally shoots him in the foot. nigel takes the gun as jake and skip decide to patch davey up.
almost immediately, however, the same gas from before descends upon them, jake selflessly putting his mask on davey's face and managing to abstain from the effects of the drug himself.
jake manages to pull a mask onto skip, but can't manage for nigel, and nigel, in his drug-induced paranoia, turns the gun to davey. jake manages to snap nigel out of it just in time.
they all leave the words, sneaking davey onto campus and into nigel's apartment.
in later conversation, davey reveals that he owes a drug debt, and was essentially forced to secure the parameter around this side of the woods. the man who forced him to do so is simply called “the boss”, a man with eyes like ice. (sadly, although jake asks, he does not have the same pancake ass as edward bates.) he’s not sure what exactly he’s protecting, but mentions it’s brought in by helicopter and they typically don’t let him touch it.
maia, ava, and wally interrogate professor sean guthrie - september 18, 2020
knowing that sean was in contact with sam, maia, ava and wally try to talk to professor guthrie about what happened to sam
turns out, he... basically just thinks that the hochne is real and that the hochne got sam.
after much convincing, they manage to get him to show them his video tape of the hochne in his office. ava and wally buy it. maia... not so much.
natty, cam, and tony research at wheldrake library - september 19, 2020
in an attempt to get some information about the disappearances on sam's list in between 1959 and 2006, natty, cam and tony pose as high school students doing a history project. a librarian, isabella greene, insists that she accompany them to the archives, as it's policy.
in a panic, tony says they're doing research on the deepriver digger, who was caught in 1959. as such, isabella only provides them with articles from around that time period. they learn the following:
all of the victims of the digger, davis shaw, were young women, mostly daughters and newlyweds. all mourned and missed, of course. there's also a little bit about the search effort. there was nothing connecting these victims besides that, they were simply last seen walking alone south of king street and east of sycamore street. davis shaw was the classic quiet man that lived by himself in a cabin in the woods, came into town to buy groceries and supplies, but mainly kept to himself. there's a lot of quotes from the young twins, rufus and adeline finch, who caught him killing his last victim. his trial lasted only lasted only three days, shaw pleading not guilty due to insanity, and he was found guilty after under two hours of deliberation. details came out about his living situation, how he was psychologically disturbed (obviously). his defense team psychologist had some very interesting ideas about the impact of this new rock and roll culture on the loner, and tried to blame elvis presley. there's also an article about the local dump owner's brother, marvin fleming, attempting to purchase the digger's cabin and turn it into a tourist attraction, as many people tried to do with the ed gein house only a year prior in neighboring wisconsin.
there's also a map of wheldrake in the 50's on the wall, on which you can see that deepriver forest used to spread further west
after leaving the archive, tony literally kicked at a book that was holding up a table, causing a loud crash. the book is titled occultisms of wheldrake, by devin walker and harrison h. hale, published in 1967.
after some fumbles, natty manages to distract isabella, convincing her the table just collapsed and almost crushed tony's foot, while cam and tony snatch the book and manage to leave the library.
later on, cam reads the book. it has a bit to do with cryptids and other supernatural creatures, but it mostly deals with examining both western and eastern philosophies. overall it seems very new age to you. lots of stuff about mind-expanding drugs, the divinity of nature and man, etc. its basically a lot of philosophical mumbo jumbo

kennedy meets the mayor - september 19, 2020
kennedy meets emma collano, the mayor's secretary, outside of her office. kennedy manages to squeeze in for a quick appointment with the mayor, under the guise of a womens and gender studies major writing a report
kennedy isn't sure what to make of a lot of the mayor's answers. mayor mcdonald says she's the first politician in her family, has always been ambitious, and, when asked about her predecessor, says that he was unwilling to accept the "change" (gentrification) occurring in wheldrake.
mayor mcdonald ran on a platform of easement for small businesses, allowing them subsidies and tax breaks within their first few years, and claims this has resulted in a much widened tax base.
the mayor claims she and isla yi are close, and that they have had to work closely as the president of wormwood and the mayor of wheldrake. though even she acknowledges the strange distance between wormwood and wheldrake.
upon asking , the mayor tells kennedy there are internships available, though, according to emma, its a large application kennedy doesn't have very long to complete. however, emma gives kennedy both her own and mayor mcdonald's contact information, and wishes her well.
adri and emmet take on the woods - september 19, 2020 ( tw hallucinations and drugging )
adri and emmet attempt to find the source of the gas in the woods. at first, they are unsuccessful, and adri removes her gas mask. however, she is almost immediately drugged, and there is a struggle for emmet to put the mask back on.
after this struggle, however, adri manages to spot a spout within the knot of a tree, and can see that the tree... isn't exactly healthy thanks to it. she takes a few pictures. upon inspecting the ground, she can tell there is piping leading further into the woods. they take a few pictures of that, too, and adri and emmet follow it.
they encounter an armed man wearing a mask, and have a confrontation. once emmet assures the man that they were just going for a walk (in gas masks, certainly) and adri bursts into tears, the man holds them at gunpoint until they are out of his sight.
once at the tracks, adri and emmet inspect the spray paint there. it's pretty faded, doesn't seem to be particularly artistic, just a set of two lines, cross-wise, across the tracks.

ZS Mythos (3/3): Twelve Foundation Stones
This article is part of a series about the Mythos (worldview-narrative) underlying the Zero State (ZS). Part 1 is about our highest concept, ideal, and level of organization, which we call The Array. Part 2 explains the Sections & Sessions our core activity revolves around, and Part 3 (below) covers the Twelve Foundation Stones that form the basis of our story.
A previous article I wrote for Tnet mentioned the need for entertainment that gives people a strong sense of meaning and purpose in their lives, and introduced an idea known as the twelve “Foundation Stones” of the ZS-ARG Mythos. The Foundation Stones are the seeds of our unifying narrative. Each is the fragmentary initial story of one of the twelve ZS Houses, outlined very briefly below and spelled out in full in the forthcoming Black Book. Before reading this article it is important to understand that it refers to the Zero State (ZS) Alternate Reality Game (ARG), and thus deal in metafiction. It is not a simple non-fiction article (obviously!) and will only make sense if you already know ZS, or follow some of the links above! This article draws – with thanks – upon text from the ZS wiki, some of which has been contributed by members of the various ZS Houses.

Metahouse 1: The Foundation
The Zero State is not an insular realm, existing in total isolation. Some of the organizations within it don’t exist wholly within it, but in something more like a state of overlap, with an aspect within ZS, and other aspects manifesting elsewhere, in other ways. The Foundation is perhaps the best example of such an arrangement, as its very name alludes to an organization which is not ZS-based at all, and in fact existed before ZS-proper was founded in 12011.
Our vision is to preserve the collective knowledge of civilization and to facilitate the self-development of all sentient and sapient entities.
To that end, we focus on projects that push that vision forward from preserving knowledge to preserving people and all intelligence we may find.

One last curiosity to note about The Foundation is that the ASI which coordinates its activities within the late-C21 is known as The Architect, and that entity was the first to make substantial strategic moves in the early-C21 milieu. It is clear that The Foundation mean business, or at least take the idea of first move advantage very seriously.
01 House Sem-Bhu (AKA The Keystone, The Temple)
House Sem-Bhu is notoriously esoteric, apocalyptic, autocratic, and insular, even by ZS standards. In theory it is half of the MetaHouse known as The Foundation with House Adhar, but in terms of practical reality The Foundation largely is House Adhar, and House Sem-Bhu maintains a strange, hermit-like position permanently on the edge of ZS culture.
The name “Sem-Bhu” is said to refer to the Proto-Indo-European language, expressing a concept of unity, to become one, to “same-become”; an idea which defines the Ajati. House Sem-Bhu has special and mysterious connections to the ZS precursor group known as “Doctrine Zero”, and those connections are part of a wider swirl of rumours that the (surprisingly few) members of Sem-Bhu believe in some kind of prophecy regarding an event or person known as “Abbaton” or “Liberithyr”, among other names. What these things mean exactly is a mystery, for the time being.
02 House Adhar (AKA The Foundation, The Organization)
The origin of the House name “Adhar” is unclear, although it has been suggested that it is a combination of two (related) etymologies:
In Scots Gaelic, “Adhar” means air, sky, or heaven (being a Scots derivation of the Old Irish aer, from Latin aer, from Greek ἀήρ (aer). Air is the element of thought and will in most Pagan religions.
At the other end of the Proto-Indo-European spectrum, Adhar had the same meaning in ancient Sanskrit, later becoming a word referring to the gods Vishnu and Shiva, and now in modern Hindi Aadhaar means “Foundation”. For this reason, House Adhar is frequently referred to simply as The Foundation.
A third (apparently unrelated, but striking) etymology is (Al) Dar in Arabic, meaning “(The) House”.
The Foundation (more properly called the Pratoriate Foundation) has been around for at least decades with the first known reference that has been validated being in 1996 at the UVSC where a group of students worked in an officially scheduled work group in the computer lab around artificial intelligence and preservation of data and at least two of those students are known to have worked on the Principium Librarius that was created in Seattle around 2010.
We know that the Foundation was also connected to a technology consulting firm Domus Giordanous in at least 2011 and later to the Giordanous Group LLC which is believed to have been the front for Domus Giordanous.
For a brief period the Foundation went public and can still be seen archived in the way back machine at: http://web.archive.org/web/20160430211536/http://pratoriate.org/ between 2013 and 2016 and in that time frame the Principium Librarius was moved to Leavenworth Washington in 2015.
The Foundation had ties to the startup ParameterIO that had 63 million in funding but blew up in a big lawsuit and out of that was created for the AGI Inc lab in 2015 and the subsequent falling out of the chief scientist with the ‘Architect’ and a group in or connected to the AGI Inc Lab called the Triumvirate.
Later the next year the Principium Librarius again moved to Provo Utah in Dec 2016 along with the corporation Artificial General Intelligence, Inc.
The Foundation (or at least members of the Foundation) had been connected to the Artificial General Intelligence still through 2017, but it seems there is some degree of internal tension between Foundation members and the Architect at or in the AGI Lab.
Metahouse 2: Cloud Nine
Cloud Nine is the most strange, dreamlike, even psychedelic of the six Metahouses. This is the realm of creators, magicians, and dream-explorers. ‘Niners tend to be among the most agile ZSers in terms of planning and networking, and are the most focussed on the idea that the Zero State could be some kind of game or simulation.
03 House Oneiros (AKA The State, Station)
“You call us dreamers, because we walk through lands that exist in realms that do not. Because we see, in the corner of our blind eyes, the little gods which live in-between that which is real and unreal. Dreamers we may be, but only because we know the truth that hides itself from those who live only while awake. That these worlds we walk through, these twilight realms that we may shape according to our will, are the seed of a new world. Of a world where the divide between dreams and reality has vanished, like smoke in the wind.” The leader of House Onieros is the Monk. Their duty is to prepare the way for what is to come, to teach the stories of the future. To protect and preserve the world as it is, so that it may give birth to the world that may yet be. To illuminate the path that humanity might walk, that it may neither fall back into darkness nor destroyed by the light of its own creation.
04 House Argento (AKA The Sessions)
The silver eponym of House Argento represents many facets: liminal states between light and darkness, ignorance and wisdom, esoteric and exoteric.
This house is intended to be a ludus, focused on matters of science, and of education. House Argento is associated with the Liber Institute.
A time of accelerating social and technological change is also a time of accelerating proliferation of data. Data that must be sifted for information, built into knowledge, and integrated to support wise decisions. For humans and other systems alike, this requires adaptability: the ability to quickly ingest new knowledge, to sift the wheat from the chaff, and to act in a timely fashion.
In matters of pedagogy, it is important to understand the student as well as the subject. A teacher must provide the structures that allow learners to construct their own representations of knowledge; to furnish them with the cognitive tools necessary for discovering their own novel truths, and to hone those tools with practical challenges. An intelligent mind is blessed with raw power; the best outcomes can be attained by harnessing that power with finesse.

Metahouse 3: ZODIAC
ZODIAC is ZS’ idealistic heart, primarily responsible for outreach and expansion. Its culture is shaped by a group known as the Navigators, whose own future-AI-leader/deity is known as Kybernetes. The Navigators can be a strange tribe, and there is known to be some tension between agents of Kybernetes and The Architect, if not the entities themselves.
05 House Arrakis (AKA The Ajati)
House Arrakis is home to the Navigators, led by Navigator Prime, and their collective worldview might better be described as “cosmic” rather than “magical”. It is certainly mysterious, not being well understood by most in the early-C21 milieu of 12018. House Arrakis plays the long game.
The themes that are clear even at that early stage, however, involves future Trans- and Posthumans as the “aliens” of 20th Century imaginings, other dimensions impinging upon our own, and a kind of Buddhist ‘centredness’ holding these ideas together, which explicitly focusses upon familiar human concepts such as balance, and love.
The culture of House Arrakis is about ‘inner space’ as much as ‘outer space’, meditation, intuition, and fluid identity. Some particularly far-fetched rumours link House Arrakis to Doctrine Zero itself and the oldest ZSers, saying that these entities influenced the outcome of the two World Wars and were behind the post-war peace movements of the 50s-70s.
06 House R’lyeh (AKA The Club, The Last Dance Club)
House R’lyeh is a much darker, stranger, and even less well understood quantity than House Arrakis. It is just as weird, but without the reassuring tones of peace and love. Its name is an obvious reference to the “Cosmic Horror” tales of 20th Century author H.P. Lovecraft, but that name is largely believed to be a simple label applied to the House by outsiders and non-members, trying to express their basic understanding of its nature. House R’lyeh may have strange designs on the future, but for now those plans are unknown, perhaps being held in check by the Navigators of House Arrakis.
