The rest of Vox's day goes by in a blur. His meeting with Charlie is quickly pushed from his mind as he loses himself in a mountain of paperwork. God, why is there always so much paperwork for everything?

He doesn't even manage to finish it all before he has to get down to the studio for his nightly broadcast. Luckily, he's at least got the presence of mind to give tonight's broadcast his usual eighty percent. It goes by fairly quickly, with nothing really interesting having happened recently, and he’s back to his paperwork in no time.

Normally, he'd shove it off to do between meetings tomorrow, but he's really not keen on potentially running into Valentino again today. It seems like every time they see each other now, there's just one more thing added to the laundry list of reasons why Vox is rapidly approaching his breaking point. He pushes away that train of thought as best he can, doing his best to get back into that mindless routine he had going earlier, but he can't quite shake off the dread he's let in.

He doesn't finish until nearly two in the morning, and by that point, there's really no reason to head up to the penthouse other than to maybe finish cleaning up his room before it's time for the next workday to start. He's pretty sure everyone will be asleep at least, so if he's quiet enough, he can probably get through to the next day without having to deal with anyone else.

He gathers his things and prepares to travel through the Tower's wires, before spying his go bag under his desk. Right, he still needs to clean that thing out. He grabs the duffel bag as well, then quickly dematerializes into pure electricity, sending himself up through the building and rematerializing from the TV in his bedroom.

It's just his luck that he does so about as gracefully as a toddler at a trampoline park, crashing to the floor with a loud thud. So much for not waking anyone up. He waits a couple minutes, expecting one of the other Vees to come waltzing in, demanding his attention. Yet nothing happens. He's completely alone, and this time, he breathes a sigh of relief over it.

The workday in the studio was wrapping up, the owls were leaving taking the Owl Express back to the city before the yellow owl would take it back to the studio after. The fancy cars of the penguins were leaving the parking lot one by one as their owners returned to them to drive to the nearest teleportation station to get back to the moon. Only one car remained in the lot, a fancy red car that belonged to the sci-fi director. Said director was still in his office, writing the script for his next movie while loud music blared through the speakers that were mounted on the walls. He hadn't noticed that everyone else had left, he didn't hear the voice of one of his subordinates that had come down to inform him that they had finished preparing the set and were about to head home.

He took a deep breath once he finished with writing the last passage of his story and got up to get himself a coffee before reading through the script once more. When he turned off the music after, ready to check up on the penguins that he assumed were still in the studio, he noticed that it was dead silent, not a single noise in could be heard. It was something he disliked greatly, the absolute lack of noise of motion of life. The tall penguin went up to his sets and found that they were indeed fully set up, the props were in position, so were the cameras, yet there wasn't a soul on them. He knew that it was childish and stupid to find the darkness and quiet eerie, yet he couldn't help but feel uneasy. It wasn't like he expected a monster to come out of the shadows to drag him away, it was more like a subconscious unrest.

After looking at his wrist watch, he nearly flinched, it was now 7pm, no wonder no one but him was left in the building, it was way past work hours. He hummed a song to himself to get rid of the tension that this stifling silence was creating as he went about finishing up for the day. As he inspected the sets one last time and finished some paperwork, he felt worst by the second, like this stillness, this lack of any sound and any motion was crushing him. He was almost relieved when he heard something in the distance as he looked up the door. Even though he really disliked the old steam train by association with its troublesome owner, right now, the loud noise of the wheels and the chugging of the Owl Express was a blessing. It appeared that the yellow owl would soon be back after dropping the Express Owls off at the city stations. At least that meant that he wouldn't be alone in the studio anymore, that this crushing silence would be gone. For once, he'd be happy about the loud screaming and yelling of his rival.

October 10th - A Parisian Detour

Welp, Woop.

A plan that involved a little mini-tour of Italy has landed me once again in Baguette-world (and how could I be mad?). My dear friend Rose caught a nasty bug and had to push her arrival to Saturday, so I seriously unserioused a message to my old college roommate, Aneyn from my (unmade) bed in Pittsburgh, Penna:

Much to my delight it was actually cheaper to fly into CDG than FCO and wiggling my way down to Aneyn's flat in The Maraias made me feel like I had some semblance of belonging back in the landscape of beautiful clothing and round tones.

As the water pooled on the ground from a recent heavy rain and I got compliments on my stupid little hat in a language I don't speak, I puttered through three different train systems, a key pad, an intercom and climbed to a fabulous 6th floor (5th floor?) studio with a terrace.

At last I found Aneyn in the middle of her workday and promptly turned into a human loaf upon her bed for two hours, risking a fine from the Jetlag Police for not taping my eyes open and immediately bopping around the Louvre at 5am in my head.

(As an aside, if you can do this and have the strength to break from the siren's song of trying to regain all lost sleep, I always insist on it. The psychopaths that require you immediately begin touristing as soon as you can ambulate around your destination are the kind that coffee can still help after being rudely held upright in an economy torture chamber for 7 hours--and they're the lucky ones.)

After a sticky nap and a much needed shower we nicked off to get an aperitif before dinner.

We were treated to a glorious pre-dinner special of olives, sherry, and three oysters fresh from the Gibraltar for only 16€ which felt like a gift. And then of course stayed for a few more before waltzing through the neighborhood on our way to dinner.

We wound our way to the West Bank to partake in a Bistro's dinner service that Aneyn had not had since she was a child. I was positively delighted by Brasserie Balzar's time-capsule like quality. Mirrored walls, big potted plants, rich wood paneling, servers in traditional, sharp looking coats and an overall bustling atmosphere for a Thursday night in a quiet neighborhood.

We ordered some favorites and some new things I'd never encountered and were teased by the wait staff all the same for being indecisive.

After a bottle of a wine (a 'ole botol!) we tottered to meet a visiting friend back in "the fourth" (Aneyn said this with meaning I still can't assign?) in a bar painted in a very classic French regal style that also vended candy and gum and cigarettes with the images of the maimed on them. I drank champagne better than an establishment that largely served cheap beer and rum and coke had any right to serve (alas, France) and watched someone play chess at a neighboring table in the maelstrom of drunk youngins.

In general the place was spilling with the youth, but the Parisians drink and it was not the only bar on the block atitter with toasted locals on a Thursday at midnight. A tame American wondering what we'd be like in New York City at this hour on a patio in the Meatpacking District.

We stumbled home in the cold damp and over bridges. Tomorrow a small galavant about the town to make up for my very lacking touristic knowledge.

Augmented Reality Speeds Spacecraft Construction at NASA Goddard - NASA

Augmented reality tools have helped technicians improve accuracy and save time on fit checks for the Roman Space Telescope being assembled at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

In one instance, manipulating a digital model of Roman’s propulsion system into the real telescope structure revealed the planned design would not fit around existing wiring. The finding helped avoid a need to rebuild any components.

The R&D team at Goddard working on this AR project suggests broader adoption in the future could potentially save weeks of construction time and hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Technicians armed with advanced measuring equipment, augmented reality headsets, and QR codes virtually checked the fit of some Roman Space Telescope structures before building or moving them through facilities at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland.

“We’ve been able to place sensors, mounting interfaces, and other spacecraft hardware in 3D space faster and more accurately than previous techniques,” said NASA Goddard engineer Ron Glenn. “That could be a huge benefit to any program’s cost and schedule.” 

Projecting digital models onto the real world allows the technicians to align parts and look for potential interference among them. The AR heads-up display also enables precise positioning of flight hardware for assembly with accuracy down to thousandths of an inch.

Using NASA’s Internal Research and Development program, Glenn said his team keeps finding new ways to improve how NASA builds spacecraft with AR technology in a project aiding Roman’s construction at NASA Goddard. 

Glenn said the team has achieved far more than they originally sought to prove. “The original project goal was to develop enhanced assembly solutions utilizing AR and find out if we could eliminate costly fabrication time,” he said. “We found the team could do so much more.”

For instance, engineers using a robotic arm for precision measuring and 3D laser scanning mapped Roman’s complex wiring harness and the volume within the spacecraft structure.  

“Manipulating the virtual model of Roman’s propulsion assembly into that frame, we found places where it interfered with the existing wiring harness, team engineer Eric Brune said. “Adjusting the propulsion assembly before building it allowed the mission to avoid costly and time-consuming delays.”

Roman’s propulsion system was successfully integrated earlier this year.

Considering the time it takes to design, build, move, redesign, and rebuild, Brune added, their work saved many workdays by multiple engineers and technicians.

“We have identified many additional benefits to these combinations of technologies,” team engineer Aaron Sanford said. “Partners at other locations can collaborate directly through the technicians’ point of view. Using QR codes for metadata storage and document transfer adds another layer of efficiency, enabling quick access to relevant information right at your fingertips. Developing AR techniques for reverse engineering and advanced structures opens many possibilities such as training and documentation.” 

The technologies allow 3D designs of parts and assemblies to be shared or virtually handed off from remote locations. They also enable dry runs of moving and installing structures as well as help capture precise measurements after parts are built to compare to their designs. 

Adding a precision laser tracker to the mix can also eliminate the need to create elaborate physical templates to ensure components are accurately mounted in precise positions and orientations, Sanford said. Even details such as whether a technician can physically extend an arm inside a structure to turn a bolt or manipulate a part can be worked out in augmented reality before construction. 

During construction, an engineer wearing a headset can reference vital information, like the torque specifications for individual bolts, using a hand gesture. In fact, the engineer could achieve this without having to pause and find the information on another device or in paper documents.  

In the future, the team hopes to help integrate various components, conduct inspections, and document final construction. Sanford said, “it’s a cultural shift. It takes time to adopt these new tools.”  

“It will help us rapidly produce spacecraft and instruments, saving weeks and potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars,” Glenn said. “That allows us to return resources to the agency to develop new missions.”

The Center Innovation Fund, within the agency’s Space Technology Mission Directorate, stimulates and encourages creativity and innovation at NASA centers while addressing the technology needs of NASA and the nation.
