'Kingpin: Life of Crime'
[PC] [TAIWAN] [MAGAZINE] [1999]
"Kingpin's urban aesthetic is unique. Part-steampunk, part-art Deco, the world is an anachronism of eras and locales and personalities. To achieve this signature balance, Xatrix didn't have to look far. Viktor Antonov was already stationed inside the bullpen at Xatrix HQ, a 20-something artist who had trained under Syd Mead (Blade Runner and Aliens). "I'm fascinated by urbanism. I've lived in Sofia, Geneva, Los Angeles, Seattle, Austin Texas, I've been all over the place," Viktor notes. "Authorship is questioned in games, but someone has to bring something to the table from their own experience. Think Scorsese: his best movies have al- ways been about his own neighbourhood. Everything I've done has been cities and metropolises. "In Kingpin, we wanted to do a universe," Viktor elaborates, "but we ended up doing one city. You had your downtown area, your poison city, your sewers, your club, your shipyard. It was very much like a genre movie. The inspiration started with downtown LA, and then we added a little bit of steampunk and science fiction. "One of the things that I have found useful in my contribution to the medium is that I'm not a hardcore gamer," Viktor says. "So in Kingpin, I wanted the lighting to be right, the architecture to be right. And the physical space of the cities to be right first and foremost. Then the rendering... if it was too sharp and neat it wouldn't work. I wanted to create a real moody ambience." Kingpin shook off some of its early sci-fi traits when Cypress Hill came calling. The rap group loved the urban environments and signed on to do the score, but it necessitated that Kingpin take place in a world that more resembled our own. The partnership was mutually beneficial, but not necessarily the right artistic choice." ~Edward Love, Retro Gamer Magazine

Unfortunately, it's peak....
I've just received and watched an early review copy of Xatrix's newest theory video. Bad news, guys. It's just too damn good... Like, I'm in awe. It's a 2-hour video that felt like it was 30 minutes long, at most.
That's how INVESTED I was, watching it.

Sega Saturn - Cyberia
Title: Cyberia / サイベリア
Developer: Xatrix Entertainment
Publisher: Interplay Productions / Electronic Arts Victor
Release date: 16 February 1996
Catalogue No.: T-12501G
Genre: Adventure
Oh my, this is a bloody awful game. Basically, what we have is pre-rendered 3D map areas that you walk through to get from A to B along with some really and I mean really poor action sections. It's a shame really because it looks like the makers of this game had some really nice ideas but just didn't have the talent to make them work.
Best to avoid this one at all costs.

Quake II - The Reckoning (2023)
I told myself I wasn't going to play this until I'd beaten the DOOMer Boards Project WAD that I'd started. Just beat it. The Quake II mission pack, not the WAD. Whoops.

I didn't always love Quake II. Back when I played the thing, my first impressions were of disappointment; but, as my previous review may have implied, it grew on me. And how.
I think a part of this was because of the high quality of the mission packs, as I remember them -- The Reckoning being sorta more-of-the-same with a few clever little touches thrown in, Ground Zero being absolutely murderous and evil, but still good. I've yet to check whether my memory of the latter is correct. But the former? Sure.
Clever little touches such as getting into a crate and stowing away onto a moon-bound frigate, having to destroy the lid to make a low-G assisted leap out of it. There aren't a whole bunch of them, but they add a little intrigue onto what The Reckoning is.
And what it is, as mentioned, is more Quake II. This isn't really a bad thing, and it's not strictly identical to the base experience, as there are some new weapons and enemies; a couple of which being just variants of the base Q2 mooks; and a wholly different flavour of level design as provided by Xatrix Entertainment -- known back then for, sigh, Redneck Rampage.
Early levels really feel Xatrix, with a sewer section feeling like it's about to descend into Redneck's mazelike bullshit; but thankfully it never does. In fact, the early sewer out of the way, things take a turn upward pretty dramatically. And, kudos where it's due, many of the same tendencies in enemy placement translate a lot better to a game with better monster and weapon design. It just works.
Also of note, the ammo balance is in my opinion great. I've seen some criticism at the lack of shotgun shells; and indeed, those plus bullets become in stark short supply toward the end of the campaign; but this functions to incentivise the player to stray from the workhorse weapons, perhaps trying the main two newcomers - the Phalanx (with its own ammo pool) and Ion Ripper (which uses cells). Both are very powerful and definitely worth using.
There's also a trap weapon I barely ever used. It was effective for sure, sucking in lower-tier soldiers and reducing them to a fine red mist, but it wasn't quite as fun as getting into the thick of it and firing til your weapon barrel glows red. Figuratively speaking.
Final boss is The Makron again. Spoilers. But hey, there's a nice dash to vacate the exploding moon via spaceship before the ending.
A great time. 4/5

Feeding
(yes I’m trying out new experiments in writing, non-essential stories in my series just there for more of the characters, world building, and such. I’ll be doing the taglists for these the same as main parts.)
Taglist: @whumping-out-of-time
TW:
Apollo waited for his breathing to stop stinging, every breath through gritted teeth stung as his ribs returned to their correct place, he mustered his strength to get to his knees, if it were not for him wearing a white shirt he would not have recognized his bleeding, his ears still rang from being stomped upon, he winced at every heartbeat that brought pain.
“Okay I got-” Xatrix entered the dining hall carrying a plate only to see the battered Apollo doing his best to stay upright. “I’m going to have to feed you it seems.” Xatrix looked Apollo over at parts of him clicked back into place slowly.
“N- no.” Apollo clutched his chest with every word as pain radiated. “I can eat.”
“Your hand is mangled like you got into a fistfight with a wood chipper.” Xatrix crouched down to better level themselves with Apollo. “So no I’m not letting you eat by yourself.” Xatrix quickly got to cutting up the food and bringing it to Apollo’s mouth, he ate it slowly. “See, better?”
“Y- yes, it’s good.” Apollo was glad to not be on an empty stomach, this should speed up his healing factor a bit.
“good, since it seems your fingers are healing after some food would you like a drink?” Xatrix left Apollo to eat the rest of his meal after feeding him half of the plate.
“Some Kola?” Apollo did have a thing for soda and he hasn’t had any since arriving in hell.
“You know it removes rust? what do you think it’s doing to your body?” Xatrix on the other hand was not a fan of soda and wanted Apollo as healthy as possible for some reason.
“It’s removing rust from my body, duh.” Xatrix pinched her nose brow at his stupidity, but a smile cracked across her face, the first Apollo had seen while down here, she left the room while Apollo ate, when it was over he fell asleep on the dining room floor.
