Plane (2023)

Plane is an action thriller distributed by Lionsgate. Gerard Butler is the lead. Those facts are probably enough to tell you whether this is a movie you'll find appealing and I'd say it's even better than that.

Before taking off for Honolulu from Singapore, captain Brodie Torrance (Gerard Butler) is forced to welcome an unexpected passenger on his flight: Louis Gaspare (Mike Colter), a fugitive charged with homicide. In the air, Flight 119 is severely damaged by a storm. Brodie manages to land the plane on an unidentified island in the Philippines but the crew and passengers have more than an accused murderer to worry about: Jolo island is controlled by anti-government rebels who are looking to take everyone hostage and kill those who resist.

What makes Plane engaging is that you can sort of divide it into several mini-movies, each with its own flavor of tension and excitement. The first is the initial flight through the storm. Brodie and his co-pilot, Samuel (Yoson An) are assured the weather will dissipate by the time they arrive and that delaying the flight or going around the clouds would be too expensive for the airline. Bad call. Once that crisis is overcome, we move on to the next: How do the passengers get rescued? The troubles in this segment are completely different from those we saw while the plane was nearly falling out of the sky. After that, the passengers have to contend with warlord Datu (Evan Dane Taylor). Then they have to actually make it to safety. Each segment fits in the larger narrative seamlessly and brings variety to the whole.

Though the threat Datu and his thugs represent is exaggerated – Jolo is not a lawless island abandoned by the Philippines government – they’re nonetheless effective and believable as antagonists. The passengers are already battered from the previous crisis. Now they’re up against armed thugs who want to take them hostage?!? You thought rationing their water and finding a way to call for help while keeping an eye on the prisoner was as difficult as it was going to get for them but things just keep getting worse. Even with some revelations about Brodie’s past - he's got the skills required to rescue everyone - and Louis proving himself surprisingly useful/resourceful, the odds are against our heroes. Gerard Butler has played this kind of role before. He's comfortable in it and does it well. The passengers exude the fear and anxiety necessary for you to feel what they feel when things go wrong. You hate the bad guys. Mike Coulter is a good co-lead. What more do you need?

Plane is well-made and it fulfills all of its objectives. It would be a better film if the characters were deeper but that would also require the movie to be longer and the current 107 minutes feels just right. It’s disposable fun, which might sound like faint praise, but sometimes, that’s exactly what you want. (February 28, 2025)

📝A very entertaining old school survival thriller. I really enjoyed it. It is exactly what it says it's on the tin, it doesn't pretend to be anything other than a good old school thriller. I recommend it.
