Thinking about how one message of Chaos Walking is that "war makes monsters of men" and how people do terrible things in terrible situations because they're trying to survive and how the final revelation in A Monster Calls is that grief makes you think and acts in ways you regret but it's okay and it's human and we all do and think terrible things when we want the pain to end.

‘Who am I?!’ the monster repeated, still roaring. ‘I am the spine that the mountains hang upon! I am the tears that the rivers cry! I am the lungs that breathe the wind! I am the wolf that kills the stag, the hawk that kills the mouse, the spider that kills the fly! I am the stag, the mouse and the fly that are eaten! I am the snake of the world devouring its tail! I am everything untamed and untameable!’
It brought Conor up close to its eye. ‘I am this wild earth, come for you, Conor O'Malley.’
"You look like a tree," Conor said.

Bro, I am living for this sassy, depressed 12 year old who comes face to face with an eldritch god and could hardly care less because his mum has cancer and he’s got bigger shit to deal with thank you very much.

I don’t have a type…

Ok I absolutely LOVE any media when there are themes of grief, love, loss, death, mortality, morality, self discovery, etc. When it revolves around family or some sort of family unit and there’s a bit of ✨magic✨ like some sort of supernatural force, a curse, or an ambiguous/ unconfirmed magic source. It gets me hooked EVERY time it is so specific but I live for it.

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness
I got this novel a while back without knowing anything about it. Apparently most people I know had read and loved this book, but I knew nothing about it. When I was in the bookstore I decided to pick it up because of course a story with other stories within it and a monster had to get on my shelves, and I am very happy I got it. It perfectly fits in that section of my books that have dark fairytale vibes. The story follows Connor, who one night wakes up exactly seven minutes after midnight, to find a monster out of his window. This monster that takes the form of a tree explains he was awaken by Connor and that he will tell him three stories, and then Connor himself will have to tell a final story. This is the premise for a very touching story about grief and coming to terms with one's negative emotions. I did get a bit teary to the end, but it's honestly a very soft story. I don't even know if soft is a word that makes sense, what I mean is that the subject that are discussed in this book are told in a very delicate way that makes them approachable without making them feel overwhealming, but still hitting very hard from an emotional point of view. As you might know I love the trope of stories within other stories, so that was a great bonus for me, and the darker tones of the story made it perfect for fall. It's a book I would very much recommend, especially for autumn.
