Speaking about color palette choices - you should check out some My Life as a Teenage Robot color scripts. I've loved this show since I was small and I'm still fascinated by it's colors

Diamond Eyes
While the light in Stevens eyes is usually shaped like a Crystal Gem star there are a few key instances where it’s shaped like a diamond, the first (that I’m aware of) being in the final song of Steven and the Stevens when Steven sings the words “... don’t go back in time or you’ll destroy yourself” which reflects the fact that Steven later stepped through Pearls memories back in time to see Rose Quartz shatter herself.
This made me wonder if Stevens ‘diamond eyes’ were in any way reflective of the moments when his life mirrored that of his mother, and if we could use them like Ronaldo’s prediction to work things out about Roses life. So as I rewatched the series I made a note of all the times they happened and thought about what each one might signify. Here they are in order:
- Monster Buddies.
Of all the episode so far Monster Buddies contains the most cases of ‘diamond eyes’. In my opinion most of these are to do with Roses attempts to cure corruption and could foreshadow some of the gaps we still have in Roses life. I’ll write a post about them later).
The first happens after Centipeetle/Nephrite starts to panic after seeing Garnets gauntlet, Steven hugs her and says: “You have to remember! This all happened today!” This could be to do with Rose discovering corrupted gems limited memory, perhaps trying to remind them who they were and what they did together.
The second (and for me the most interesting) happens just after Centipeetle poofs and Steven says “You saved me.” It makes me wonder if her sacrifice mirrors one once made by another corrupted gem, perhaps one of the ones who were more well cared for, or unusually placed like The Beatles of Heaven and Earth, Desert Glass or the Lighthouse Gem.
The third and final one for the episode happens after Garnet tells Steven that Rose never managed to cure corrupted gems and Steven says “Never, but if she couldn’t.”
- An Indirect Kiss:
Stevens tearful reflection in Amethysts cracked gem has diamond eyes, this is most likely to do with the fact Rose has to use her tears to heal her friends (particularly Amethyst).
- Mirror Gem:
In Mirror Gem Steven briefly gets diamond eyes while excitedly waving the mirror around once Pearl has finished ‘teaching him’. This could mean that Rose was in some way responsible for Lapis’s imprisonment but, as Steven never gets diamond eyes while looking in the mirror (despite there being plenty of opportunity to do so) I think it’s more likely a reflection of the fact that Pearl, in many ways helped to teach Pink Diamond. In fact I think it reflects this part of Now We’re Only Falling Apart:
- Space Race:
“... and Pearl would love it so much to see space again”.
I have less ideas about this one as there are still large gaps is Rose and Pearls history. Perhaps, as Pearl said she’d stay on Earth with Steven, it’s a parallel to the conversation that took place in Rose’s Scabbard, but I don’t really think so.
- Island Adventure:
Steven gets ‘diamond eyes’ when he exclaims “It’s the warp pad!” after it’s revealed by Sadie. To be honest this one could mean anything, it could be from when Pink Diamond was learning about colonies and warping, or it could be that she was at one point in a similar situation to Steven, lost, or tricked into staying somewhere by someone she trusted.
- The Test:
This one happens while Steven is playing Citchen Calamity and exclaims “I’ve got to roll the dice to escape the earthquake”. Again this could refer to anything, perhaps this is some sort of reference to the Cluster (which caused earthquakes), or whatever happened to either Homeworld or the planet Yellow was colonising in Jungle Moon.
- Reformed:
(Unfortunately the tumblr picture limit hit here so I’m going to have to reblog this with the other pictures.) [Picture 1]
Here Steven gets ‘diamond eyes’ when he watches Amethyst reform for the first time. In my opinion we’ve already seen the reflection of this one and it’s when Pink watches the Amethysts emerge from the Prime Kindergarten:
[Picture 2]
- Historical Friction:
[Picture 3]
When Steven says “Awesome” after Jamie says the show will go on with Steven as William Dewy and him as the remaining roles. Interestingly they get beigger after Jamie says ‘All of them’. This could be a reflection of the fact that Rose/Pink was, in a way, taking on multiple roles.
Bonus:
- Jungle Moon:
[Picture 4]
This one’s sort of cheating as it’s something Stevonnie does when they’re being Pink Diamond during a dream. After Yellow Diamond says she’s contacting the leader of the fleet ‘Pink’ says “Let me do it” with diamond eyes. There’s nothing really to mirror here as it’s already Pink Diamond doing it.
