Reni's Read Along: The Baby Dragon Café
only click "read more" if you don't care about spoilers please!
So this book is about a café owner training a hot guy's baby dragon. That's the plot.
I went into this with the expectation of the book being garbage (because my best friend Janchei told me it's garbage and I fully trust her judgement) but holy shit it's so bad, "garbage" doesn't even summarize it properly. It's garbage that's set on multiple fires, caused someone's house (or café, haha, get it?) to burn down and now their souls are haunting me.
So anyway let's get into it, shall we?
Day 1 of Reading The Baby Dragon Café
• So we're introduced to Saphira, our quirky female lead who starts out by complaining about her job. Okay, been there done that. Hating your job is relatable, I guess. So...
• then she rants about her sad backstory of having no family left since her grandma, who raised her, passed away. RIP granny, you died to make FL look deep for our sins and you'll be missed. Not by me, but you know. Someone's gonna miss her.
• Okay so FL runs her own café, doesn't fireproof it because "where's the fun in that?", SIGNS A WAIVER and then complains that the baby dragons destroy her café and she doesn't get insurance money??? GIRL what the fuck is wrong with you???
• I can already tell the lore is about to be good. So apparently, only special "Drakkon" families can own dragons, yet somehow every single customer has one lol? And none of them are trained?
• Oh great it's a double POV and Aiden is the average r/NiceGuy who's just too shy and awkward to be liked by anyone 👉👈
• Pheeeew the physical descriptions read like a fanfic I wrote when I was 11. Everyone is hot, naturally, and everyone shines and glitters and is radiant and smells like roses (FL) or wood (ML). Eeeek.
• Their "meet cute" was definitely not cute. But it was a meet, I guess, so it got the job done.
• LMFAO she changes her mind FAST lol. So she's like "I hate getting up early!" and then Aiden is like "I like getting up early because everything is calm" and she's then like "Omg I've never seen it that way you're totally right". Talk about being desperate or a people pleaser? The getting up early thing should have changed gradually and then be a nice callback maybe?
• The author is plugging her next books hard lol, get your bag girl
(The second book will be like "The Baby Dragon Bakery" starring FL's coworker/bestie (SHE'S LITERALLY INTRODUCED LIKE THAT!) Lavinia and her childhood friend Theo in a ✨️Childhood Friends to Lovers✨️ story and the third book will be "The Baby Dragon Coffee Roast Battle" starring Emmeline (Aiden's cousin) and her nemesis Luke in a ✨️Enemies to Lovers✨️ scenario. Amazing. Can't wait. Actually yes I can.)
• How can you open a business without knowing math??? Girl what are you doing????
• Drakkon families look down on poachers... uh yeh, because poaching is bad? Am I supposed to be in favor of poaching here?
• My last note for today is: Saphira is damn annoying with baby talking Sparky (the baby dragon) all the time. She's generally super cringey and irritating with her "I'm so cute and sweet and wanna hug everyone!"-attitude.
Jeeez I need a break.

The Baby Dragon Cafe by A. T. Qureshi
Tumblr media
3 out of 5.
The Baby Dragon 1
Saphira Margala loves dragons, but know she will never own one. Instead she opens The Baby Dragon Cafe, a coffee shop where adorable baby dragons can accompany their owners. Unfortunately the dragons are much like human toddlers, causing chaos and attracting trouble while still looking cute. It leads to Saphira draining her savings with the amount of repairs to be done.
When Aiden Sterling stumbles into her shop, following his own baby dragon, Sparky, the attraction in mutual. He sees how differently Sparky interacts with Saphira and hires her to train the little devil to behave and, if possible, get him to stop biting him.
sigh The month started so wonderfully with interesting reads. And this had everything that should've appealed to me, from dragons to romance and fantasy (I will NOT use that ridiculous term "romantasy") and fake marriage and touted as a cozy read. Not to mention having an awkward hero, which is a particular favorite of mine in a romance. Yeah, no. I found myself only enjoying the baby dragon bits and fast reading through everything else. Even the ending was a disappointment, although not for the hero and heroine's HEA.
The dragons are the only thing that saved this book from a 2.5 stars.
At least when I preordered this it was only $2US, so I don't feel like I wasted any money.

They know they’re the answer to each other’s problems, but happy-go-lucky Saphira and gorgeous-but-grumpy Aiden couldn’t be more different. Can they find a way to work together – and maybe even ignite some fire of their own?

Review: The Baby Dragon Cafe by A. T. Qureshi.
When Saphira opened up her café for baby dragons and their humans, she wasn’t expecting it to be so difficult to keep the fires burning. It turns out, young dragons are not the best magical animals to keep in a café, and replacing all that burnt furniture is costing Saphira more than she can afford from selling dragon-roasted coffee. Aiden is a local gardener, and local heart-throb, more interested in his plants than actually spending time with his disobedient baby dragon. When Aiden walks into Saphira’s café, he has a genius idea – he'll ask Saphira to train his baby dragon, and he'll pay her enough to keep the café afloat. Saphira’s happy-go-lucky attitude doesn’t seem to do anything but irritate the grumpy-but-gorgeous Aiden, except that everywhere she goes, she finds him there. But can this dragon café owner turn her fortunes around, and maybe find love along the way?
Honestly, this whole move towards cosy fantasy is very much something I am here for especially when we get books like these.
A warm fuzzy feeling of a book, The Baby Dragon Cafe is the perfect read for Winter and cosying up somewhere with a big mug of something and a blanket - it makes you also want a baby dragon with you for this no matter the dangers to items of your clothing.
A cute romance, well developed characters and a setting you wish you could visit, this book is just so lovely to drop back into whenever you feel like a pick-me-up. I read it over a busy Christmas time, and I am so glad I had this to look forward to at the end of the day. Part romance, part slice of life in a fantasy cafe, this book warms your heart to such wonderfully written characters.
I really did enjoy this one, and really look forward to the next book in this series, as this left me wanting to know so much more about the place, the people and of course the dragons!
(Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC for review!)

Une Semaine d'Expériences avec Dieu(SED N°192025)
Dimanche, 08 juin 2025
Amen !!!
Merci d'être fidèle !

The Baby Dragon Café by A. T. Qureshi
Finished: 27th March, 2025
Genre: Romance
May be for you if you like: Fantasy with modern settings, dual POV, dog training, fake marriage
Synopsis
When Saphira opens her cafe welcoming pet baby dragons, she isn’t expecting it to be quite so hard to keep the fires burning. But her young dragon patrons keep incinerating her furniture, which means selling coffee isn’t covering all her costs.
Local heart-throb Aiden is a gardener, though his disobedient baby dragon is a major distraction from his beloved plants. However, Saphira’s café gives him an idea – he’ll ask Saphira to train his dragon, and pay her enough to keep the cafe afloat.
They know they’re the answer to each other’s problems, but happy-go-lucky Saphira and gorgeous-but-grumpy Aiden couldn’t be more different. Can they find a way to work together – and maybe even ignite some fire of their own?
Review
Pheeew I really didn't like this book. I went into it with zero expectations because my best friend @janchei-reads hated it and I trust her judgement. She was completely right, this book was beyond terrible. So let's quickly go over the reasons why this book wasn't for me, shall we?
The Story
can be summarized in one word: pointless. So the premise is that Saphira is a struggling café owner alright, and that she's training a baby dragon for an aloof but handsome rider. Okay. All that is relevant for the first and last chapters, and then it isn't for the rest of the book. Saphira meets Aiden pretty quickly and the "training" ensues, but the training is just her babysitting the dragon while drooling over its owner. To make it seem like something is happening, Saphira sometimes trains Sparky in actual dog-like behaviors like sitting on command and stopping to bite people. Okay.
The café setting is relegated to background noise after chapter one - Saphira, though claiming she adores her café more than anything and working sooo hard, doesn't... actually work that much in the café. We get a few scenes of her making coffee (for Aiden) and the rest of the café-related works falls onto the side characters. So do we get some dragon action at least?
Well. We do get two dragon-related "rituals" - one of which is "throwing off the baby dragon off a mountain so he learns how to fly" and the other is "steal a gem from a dragon and sell it to me in a scam so you can become a dragon rider". They both happen towards the end of the novel. The first ritual isn't even focused on much because it's also the (I guess) emotional climax of the book, so. The second ritual is done in about two pages. A big disappointment.
The pacing was also really off - I felt like the rituals both should have happened earlier. The love story progressed way too slowly in the light of the characters' obvious feelings for each other. There were some attempts at "misunderstanding" plotlines but they were unbelievable and badly executed, so even the getting together of the leads felt dissatisfying.
The Characters
were just plain irritating. Saphira was supposed to be the "sunshine"-character, but she was just obnoxious. She left all the hard work to her best friend Lavinia, sometimes talked about how much she loves all her customers (while never actually interacting with them past the first chapter), and was condescending to her new part timers, especially Calahan. She was a terrible boss and business owner in general, making stupid decisions left and right while patting herself on the back for doing such a good job. She also had some self-image issues due to this whole "Drakkon Family" business but it didn't get resolved properly so I didn't care, honestly.
Aiden was supposed to be the "grumpy" guy, but since he was a POV character as well, the reader knows the entire time that his "being grumpy" is just him being extremely socially awkward. The combo just didn't land.
Sparky, the baby dragon, was inconsequential to the plot. He was basically a puppy with wings, and apart from being jealous and annoying there wasn't much to "Sparky-Poo" as Saphira calls him.
The only characters I remotely cared for were Lavinia and Theo - not because I liked them, but because I used to be a lawyer and I felt the urge to represent them in a civil court against Saphira. I also didn't appreciate the obvious plugging of them as the main characters of their own book - feels like a cheap cashgrab attempt to me.
The Worldbuilding
made absolutely no sense and I could rant about it forever, but I won't, because who cares.
I'll say though, the whole "Drakkon Family" issue made absolutely zero sense because as we learn in the end, there is nothing special about them. Basically anyone can choose to become a rider, so I don't understand all the fuss about this whole "Drakkon Family VS non-Drakkon Family" heritage thing. It was absolutely pointless. It was also weird how there are a few powerful families who own dragons, but ALL of the customers owned one?
I also don't get how there's a university that teaches things like Dragon History (one side character studies this) and Magical Creature Veterinary Medicine (which Lavinia studies) and yet Saphira continuously acts like knowledge about dragons is only for Drakkon family members.
This whole ritual thing also didn't make sense (both of them) and they honestly felt like one of these things people from a country make up for toursists to grab some coin. "Oh yeah we have the ancient Chinese Festival of uuuuh Ancestry! You gotta climb this mountain, pay me 50 bucks and bathe in this spring to uuuuuh talk to your ancestor! Totally legit!" Like that's what it felt like sorry lol.
Final Thoughts
I don't have final thoughts. This book decimated my braincells. Don't read it please. It wasn't even bad in a fun way.

A popular comedy-drama from Bollywood that came out in 2009, it focuses on the journey of three engineering students, Farhan Qureshi, Raju Rastogi, and Rancho, at the Imperial College of Engineering.
This movie has a lot of moral lessons on how to cope with problems and challenges. This movie shows the importance of friendship and comradeship. Farhan, Raju, and Rancho show their strong bond of friendship, even though their different backgrounds shape their experiences and decisions throughout their college lives. This also shows the personal desires and expectations of society. Farhan comes from a middle-class family. His father wants him to be an engineer, but Farhan wants to be a wildlife photographer. Raju comes from a poor family; his father is bedridden, so his mother works really hard to support her family's needs. Lastly, Rancho was originally a servant’s son; his true identity is revealed later in the movie. He loved learning and attended school in place of the real Ranchoddas.
This movie is all about following your passion. This film shows the importance of pursuing one's passion rather than following what other people want you to be. This movie encourages viewers to take risks; overcoming fear will lead to personal growth and success. And lastly, the value of friendship shows the importance of having a supportive and understanding group of friends. Helping each other through personal and academic challenges shows that everything is possible when everyone is bonding.
In conclusion, enjoy every moment of your life. Problems, dilemmas, challenges, conundrums, etc. are part of our journey. Life is not just about achieving goals but also about enjoying the journey. Find friends that will help you achieve your goals without dragging you down. Life is short; make your life meaningful and filled with happiness and happy memories.
