(ABC9) LINCOLN HEIGHTS, Ohio — After roughly a dozen people displayed swastika-emblazoned flags on an overpass over I-75 near Lincoln Heights and Evendale, residents who live nearby say hate has no place in their communities.

"You will not win," said Julian Cook, a pastor in Lincoln Heights. "You will not win. You may try, but we have a history of being able to push past these things, as difficult as they may be. You will not win."

The people with the flags could be seen on traffic cameras displaying around six black flags with a bright red swastika in the middle. The people displaying the flags appeared to be dressed in all black clothing, including black balaclavas and red face masks.

"My message to the people that's spreading hate, what do you get out of it because God said love all," said Charlene Evans, who lives nearby. "Love all. In this community, we got every race. So we love all."

Syretha Brown, who also lives nearby, said the incident signals a time for the community to stand together.

"It is now time for us to unify," said Brown. "It is now time for us to stand for each other. All of this disruption and all of the confusion and all of the things has to subside, and we must join and build together because if not, nobody is coming to save us."

Many of the individuals with the flags were also openly carrying rifles.

The group also had a banner displayed on the overpass with white supremacy messaging on it. Also on the banner were symbols the Anti-Defamation League says are often used by white supremacist groups and the Nazi party.

Mayor Aftab Pureval issued a statement on social media, saying the display was shocking and disgusting.

"Messages of hate like this have no place in our region," wrote Pureval. "It was shocking and disgusting to see swastikas displayed in Evendale today. This is not what we stand for, and it will never be what we stand for."

When the group first appeared, Hamilton County dispatchers said police responded to the scene and were working on "keeping the peace."

Evendale police told us they became aware of "an unannounced protest" on the sidewalks of the overpass.

"The protest, while very offensive, was not unlawful," reads a press release from Evendale police.

Hamilton County sheriff's deputies also responded to the scene. In a statement, Sheriff Charmaine McGuffey said they were also working to de-escalate the situation.

"There was an incident earlier today involving men representing a hate group, who positioned themselves on an overpass near the Village of Lincoln Heights. ... Lincoln Heights residents are understandably upset. We continue to work with the community, and emphasize that there is no place for hate in Hamilton County. The Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office will continue to collaborate with surrounding agencies and the residents of Lincoln Heights," she said, in part.

On traffic cameras, officers could be seen blocking traffic on the overpass.

Shortly before 3 p.m., the people waving the flags began packing their items into a UHaul parked nearby. As they did this, a large group of people — roughly 20 or more — broke through the police barricades and rushed at the group with the flags.

Photos and videos show community members grabbed ahold of one of the flags and burned it.

Flash Floods Swamp North Carolina

After hitting Florida, Hurricane Helene delivered torrential rains to communities in western North Carolina on September 27, 2024. The deluge followed two days of heavy rains that had already saturated soils and pushed the region’s rivers to unusual heights. The combined rainfall from these two events, amplified by the area’s rugged terrain, produced deadly and destructive flash floods.

Swollen rivers submerged entire communities, swamped farmland, unmoored buildings from their foundations, and swept away power and water infrastructure. While clouds have blocked most optical imagery of the flooding collected by NASA satellites so far, sensors on the NASA-USGS Landsat 8 and 9 and the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-2 satellites captured occasional glimpses of communities affected by the flooding in the days after Helene passed.

The pair of images below is a detailed view of the town of Swannanoa before and after flooding.

Saturated soils contributed to widespread runoff. This led to erosion and an accumulation of suspended sediment in floodwaters that turned waterways brown. In many areas, floodwaters appear to have receded when the satellite captured the image, but brown slicks of mud and debris remained visible.

Many of the towns in these images suffered extensive damage. Water submerged large parts of Asheville, including the Rivers Arts District and Biltmore Village, according to the Asheville Citizen-Times. A day before this image was acquired, ABC9 reported that Black Mountain lacked power, water, sewer, and passable roads. In a story about Swannanoa, The Washington Post described mangled homes, mud-choked roads, and cars in tree limbs.

In conditions that some meteorologists have called a 1,000-year flood, the combination of Helene and the predecessor rain event pushed three-day rain totals to extraordinary levels. One weather station in Yancey County recorded as much as 31 inches (78 centimeters) of rain between September 25-27, according to data collected by the National Weather Service’s Cooperative Observer Program. Other stations in the county saw more than 24 inches, and parts of Henderson and Allegheny County received more than 17 inches. The weather station at Asheville Regional Airport had already recorded nearly 14 inches when it stopped working on the morning of September 27.

With the region’s mountains already saturated, large volumes of runoff poured into waterways and helped push several rivers to record heights. On September 27, the gauge on the French Broad River in Asheville measured water levels at 24.7 feet, which is more than a foot higher than the previous record. The nearby Swannanoa River at Biltmore rose to 26.1 feet, breaking the previous record by more than 6 feet. A week after Helene hit, the region remained in a state of emergency. On October 4, more than 220,000 customers in North Carolina were without power, according to PowerOutage.us. That included 50 percent of customers in Buncombe County, 58 percent in Henderson County, 79 percent in Mitchell County, and 52 percent in Yancey County.

Access to clean water was a problem in several communities. In Asheville, the storm severely damaged key water mains and transmission lines to the North Fork Water Treatment Plant, as well as the roads required to service them. There were also reports of high turbidity at Burnett Reservoir, which supplies water to the North Fork Water Treatment Plant. In an update on October 4, Asheville authorities said it was not possible to estimate a precise timeline for restoring service to the city’s entire water system but said it could potentially take weeks.

NASA’s Disasters Response Coordination System has been activated to support agencies responding to the storm, including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The team will be posting maps and data products on its open-access mapping portal as new information becomes available about flooding, power outages, precipitation totals, and other topics.

How Noninvasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT) can help expecting parents | BGI Perspectives

The birth of every new life is to be celebrated. During the first trimester of pregnancy, doctors from the department of gynecology and obstetrics may suggest pregnant mothers undertake noninvasive prenatal testing (NIPT) to screen whether the baby might face increased risk due to chromosomal abnormalities.

During pregnancy, some of the baby’s DNA passes into the mother's bloodstream. NIPT analyses the genetic information contained in this DNA to screen whether your baby is at increased risk of:

- Down syndrome (trisomy 21) - Edwards syndrome (trisomy 18) - Patau syndrome (trisomy 13)

For example, Down syndrome, often presents moderate to severe intellectual disability and physical developmental abnormalities and has an incidence of about 1 in 800 to 1 in 1000, which increases significantly with maternal age.

Timely and comprehensive prenatal screening not only helps parents to better understand the health status of the mother and baby, but also helps expectant parents detect abnormalities early and plan for treatment in consultation with doctors from the department of gynecology and obstetrics.

Traditional Down syndrome screening is mainly done through biochemical markers, which is usually performed between the 11th and 19th week of pregnancy and has an estimated 88 percent detection rate. However, next-generation sequencing based (NGS-based) NIPT can be performed as early as the 10th week, while raising the detection rate of Down syndrome to an estimated 99 percent detection rate.

With NIPT, invasive testing can be minimized, and false negatives are significantly reduced. Therefore, NIPT is widely recommended by authoritative organizations in this field, such as the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics (ACMG) and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), for the screening of many chromosomal abnormalities. With the guidance of their doctors, NIPT is suitable for pregnant women, such as singleton and twin pregnancy, and pregnancies with a history of trisomy, high risk of aneuploidy (having missing or extra chromosomes), contraindications for invasive procedures, or in-vitro fertilization. NIPT consists of the following steps: 5-10ml of blood of the pregnant woman at 10-24 weeks is drawn and sent for testing under the advice and guidance of doctors from the department of gynecology and obstetrics; the laboratory conducts a DNA test on the blood samples; and the pregnant woman obtains the NIPT report. It's important to be aware that NIPT is a screening tool, not a diagnostic test. This means it can't diagnose a genetic condition; it may only predict your baby's related risk. If the NIPT report indicates a high risk, the pregnant woman should undergo prenatal diagnosis as advised by doctors from the department of gynecology and obstetrics.
