I loved American Primeval but Abish and Red Feather did not get nearly as much screen time as they deserved.

rant about the show american primeval and why i think abish got her happy ending, spoilers under the cut
so after having finished the show in two evenings, i had told my friend to watch it. she did. and she's a romantic, just like me. except we're different types of romantic, i guess.
the end for red feather and abish. let's start with saying that my friend said the both of them died in the arms of someone they loved. while i agree it was the case for red feather, i do not agree it was the case for abish.
like, it's kind of beautiful how we can interpret the same thing differently. but, maybe it's just me, not once did i have the impression that abish loved her husband. from the first scene when we meet abish and her husband jacob, until the ending where she literally became a part of the shoshone and fought on their side.
yes, from the traditional point of view, or if we choose to sympathize with jacob, i can understand that someone may think their ending was beautiful because they do eventually reunite. the wife and the husband dying together is generally a concept i am very fond of, but not here.
i'm sorry, but to me it seemed abish was miserable in this marriage from the beginning. i don't know much about mormons besides the fact that they were rather insane, but i assume she could've been forced into this marriage, it was something arranged and/or forced upon her. to me, abish didn't love her husband, and quite frankly, i think she had a hard time even just liking him. she wanted to be free.
on the other hand, i'm not saying she was in love with red feather nor that he was in love with her. i wished they had ended up together, but they didn't, and that's okay. again - abish wanted to be free. and, ironically, she felt the most freedom when she was held captive. so much that she even decided to escape and come back after she had been returned to the mormons.
and, honestly, from the first time abish and red feather looked at each other i hoped they'd be a thing, like it would be so romantic. the way they looked at each other for the first time was like "wow, it's fate". i was sad that they didn't get their happy ending, and i posted about it. but now i think abish did get her happy ending after all. she didn't want to live in a cage. her marriage wasn't a happy one. her marriage was a cage, possibly forced upon her. she wanted to be free. and death? i think death is what gave her eternal freedom. and what makes it more beautiful is that the bullet that gave her this freedom was fired by her own husband.

Chapter 9 snippet
Red Feather's grip around my wrist was hot and dry, almost scorching like the city pavement in summertime. The last time I had been pulled by a hand had been Jacob's on our wedding night, tugging me along like a kite on a string, fighting the grounding and trying to pull gently away into the sky with the wind. Before that, was the clutch of another man, one of the ministers at the church pulling me inside before the ceremony. That day, my feet had been heavy as lead, as had my stomach and throat - but like a strong tide, he still managed to move me to follow. But before all of that, it was my father's hand. Stiff and stern, much as he himself was, like a band of cold iron. His hand was as a manacle, ripping me away from the company of other children, those with whom I was not allowed to associate.
Red Feather was no opressor, not as I had first feared. His touch was fire, prickling lightning and I was a tree about to explode in shards upon being struck, my blood boiling in my veins like the sap in the wood. Unlike those other men, he looked over his shoulder at me. His eyes showed many things - hunger, delight, warmth, pride and strength. There was no falsehood in him, just a will like mountain granite. Implacable come rain or shine.

Watched American Primeval and every time Jacob comes on screen I very silently go oofff because dude your wife was perfectly happy to be a widow and has definitely moved on.
If anything, Jacob's well-meaning pursuit of her makes for a story of a man who with his deeply held convictions and entitlement to the woman ends up causing her nothing but harm.

Chapter 10 Snippet
Red Feather brushed his hand against mine as he passed by me, leaving his bundle carefully against the wall before crouching to build a fire in what must be the fireplace at the centre of the cave. I watched the smoke begin to drift up, then pass across to the entrance which was higher than where I now stood. The shape of the ceiling meant smoke could escape, but would allow the heat to circulate. As he built the fire larger, the light began to glimmer across the walls, revealing colour and shape which had been invisible in the grey light when we entered.
Turning to take it all in, I saw many painted images of people, animals, the sky and sun and rain. Which careful hands had made this temple? I was overcome, happiness and safety battling loss and fear. I had crossed so many hundreds of miles, not even knowing what was ahead, what I could have missed if the road had been different. My stresses were evaporating as the heat in my body built upwards. I crossed to where Red Feather was crouched and dutifully feeding the flames and I draped myself over his back.
