Well, folks, I did a thing. The Dalgliesh fandom is a tiny fandom, but we should stick together. So I have created AD's Casefiles Discord server. If you would like an invite, please pm me, and let's see where this goes. I have tagged people on here because you've posted/liked/reblogged stuff about Dalgliesh. If you know anyone else might be interested, please let them know, too. This isn't just for Bertie's version, although all you Carveliers are more than welcome, it matters not whether you like the books, the actors, the fanfic, art, giffsets, etc. Or whether you are a creator, a lurker, an artist, a consumer, etc. I'm attempting to make a central point of meeting, a safe space, a place where we can write, appreciate, collaborate, discuss, share plot bunnies, recs, etc. A drop-in place, a fun place. Dalgliesh and Tarrant's dynamic in the opening story of Series 3 is interesting. I might just have my shipping goggles on, but a lot of potential there. I'll have to write it myself though (which I'm not sure I'm up to tbh) because I doubt anyone else will.

Man, I love falling in love with media my mum used to adore at my age by complete accident.

First it was Není římského lidu ("There is No People of Rome" - a historical romance novel by a Czech author, set during the reign of Nero) about two years ago. We fangirled together over it for days.

And now, after discovering Dalgliesh (2021), I kinda offhandedly mentioned to her that I had found a really good detective series based on novels, "a bit like Poirot, but darker, I think you'd like it" and she went "oh nice, tell your father about it, would you, he'll look if its on any of our subscriptions when he's got time"

So I did. And the next sunday lunch, I sort of casually asked "So, dad, did you find where you guys could stream Dalgliesh yet" and I kid you not, my mother almost spat out her alcohol-free beer like "YOU WERE TALKING ABOUT ADAM DALGLIESH???"

Turns out she adored the novels and the Roy Marsden version as a young woman and she was really excited that there is a new adaptation.

Plus I showed her a photo of Bertie Carvel in the role. Cue mum: ... Wow. me: Right?? dad: *epic eyeroll*

honestly the show was pushing the "Charles is such a bigot, don't you just haaaaate him? wink wink nudge nudge" agenda so badly in the end it backfired and i was more interested in his character and hyperfocused on anything positive of his character. because of this, i know that in the small bit of what we saw of him that no, he wouldn't be a coward and not apologize to kate. he's actually a brave character (he stepped in the way of an exploding burning house to protect a woman) and is disgusted by rape, so why would he not be horrified at what happened to kate in the church? moreover, he already DID apologize in his own way in the car for being nasty to her. i hate that their conversation was never finished when kate asked "I don't have a problem with you. Do you have a problem with me?" and we could see the was about to answer but was interrupted.

i could go on about charles' positives in that he's actually a good cop when he puts a means to in his work, he's clever and at the end of the day he cares about his job but let's forget about all that. so what if he's not all that and just a bigot? you're just gonna write that in and forget about it? what is even the point of that? if he's going to be by the side of two people who aren't, then why not just improve him character? and don't act like it isn't possible. so now it just looks long the writers either had beef with the actor or were just too lazy to actually provide anything outside of "look he's a bigot" which was a waste of screentime.

oh and guess what, i'm shipping him with kate too just for good measure.

Dalgliesh was retiring.

Well, that certainly wasn’t the news she’d been expecting when she got home today. It had been a long one, like most of her days lately. There hadn’t been the chance to take holiday time; there were too many cases to work and they’d been short of staff.

A new group of police constables had taken the detective’s exam, so that should be remedied soon, but there was still more on the job training to do. It was rare for her to get home before 9pm most nights. She’d been thinking that something had to give. Then she’d found this invitation on the mat just inside the door.

These lines are from my current Dalgliesh/Miskin wip, where they go undercover as a couple to a series of kinky sex parties to try to uncover who could be killing those who attend. They have to "fake" some very kinky behavior that Miskin happens to love.
