“Veganism has been on the rise over the past few years, with the demand for meat-free food increasing by 987% in 2017. It's something many people have tried, but would you put your pet on a plant-based diet?
[A] new survey...discovered that 35% would consider putting their animals on a vegan diet...27% of vegan pet owners (who made up 6% of respondents) already have their pets on a plant-based diet.
"So, while only a small proportion of pet-owners are currently feeding plant-based diets to their pets, it is safe to say that interest in the diet is likely to grow."
55% of pet owners explained that they would check with their local vet before changing their pets' diet
Motivation to feed a plant-based diet was measured in terms of cost compared to what the pet owner currently paid for pet food”

Many pet owners keen to have vegan pets
“Just under six per cent of the survey respondents were vegan -- meaning they ate no meat, dairy or fish -- and more than a quarter (27 per cent) of them reported they already fed their pets plant-based diets.Among the rest of the vegans, a full 78 per cent were interested in helping their pets to switch to a plant-based diet if one were available that met their needs.
"That percentage, 27 per cent, might sound like a small number, but when you think of the actual numbers of pets involved, that's huge, and much higher than we expected."
Tumblr media
“6 per cent were vegetarian (meaning they ate no meat but did eat dairy, eggs or honey), 4 per cent were pescatarian (meaning they ate no meat but fish, and may eat dairy, eggs or honey), and nearly 6 per cent were vegan (meaning they ate no animal products).
"People have been hearing about how vegan diets are linked to lowered risks of cancer and other health benefits in humans. There is also growing concern about the environmental impact of animal agriculture."
Tumblr media
”Previous studies have also shown that pet owners tend to offer the same kind of diets to their dogs and cats that they adopt for themselves.
"So, while only a small proportion of pet owners are currently feeding plant-based diets to their pets, it is safe to say that interest in the diets is likely to grow...there is a clear need for further research in this area."

Is it Ethical to Make Your Dog Vegan?
“[D]ogs’ stomachs come equipped with two enzymes—amylase and maltose—that are able to digest starchy plants such as potatoes and legumes, as well as leafy greens, without difficulty. While dogs can digest plants, however, their bodies require more protein. For this reason, transitioning a dog to a vegan diet can deprive them of collagen, elastin, and keratin proteins that are essential for a dog’s skin, muscles, and joints. These proteins are available as supplements...While it's true that carefully planned canine veganism is expensive, complicated, and inconvenient, the same can be said of global warming. Because as the New York Times reports, around eight percent of the United States' total greenhouse gas emissions come from cattle.”

Vegan Dog Food Company Continues Its International Expansion
“V-planet, the San Francisco-based company that manufactures 100 percent vegan products for dogs...Since 2005, the vegan-owned and family-operated business has offered its plant-based kibble to a U.S. clientele. Its international expansion now makes v-dog available in Canada, Australia and Israel.
Tumblr media
“Switching dogs to vegan kibble could have a significant effect on the planet. “A 2019 study stated that if dogs and cats were a country, they’d rank fifth in global meat consumption...Caring for a large dog is environmentally comparable to driving an SUV. Pets are responsible for a quarter of the greenhouse gases from animal agriculture. Just like a human choosing a plant-based lifestyle, a dog can significantly reduce their carbon pawprint by going vegan.”
Tumblr media
“By contrast, plant-based ingredients naturally use significantly less land, water and energy than meat-based counterparts...vegan dogs thrive. Customers have reported reduced allergies, better digestion, less arthritis and other joint inflammation issues and better overall health and energy after switching their dogs to a vegan diet. Still, it is important to talk with a veterinarian before making drastic changes to your furry friend’s diet, as it must be done very cautiously.”
“At v-planet, we’re passionate about nutritious, yummy products for dogs that are cruelty-free and environmentally sustainable...We hope that by continuing to expand v-planet’s availability, we can help more dogs and save more farmed animals.”

Mark Cuban Invests Half a Million in Vegan Dog Food Startup on ‘Shark Tank’
“Wild Earth, a biotech startup that is developing vegan, humanely tested food and treats for dogs, just landed a whopping $550,000 investment from Mark Cuban on a recent episode of Shark Tank.
The company has developed healthy, tasty, vegan treats for dogs using lab-grown koji, a protein-rich, fungus-based superfood with 10 amino acids essential to dogs’ health. With Cuban’s help, the company can release its treats and develop its vegan dog food.”

“Foods for companion animals are often composed of the ground-up parts of animals that the U.S. Department of Agriculture deems unfit for human consumption (including the flesh of animals who fall into one of the “four D” categories: dead, dying, diseased, or disabled), some of which contain hormones, pesticides, and antibiotics. Since dogs are omnivorous and usually hearty eaters, it’s relatively simple to keep them healthy on plant-based foods that contain amino acids, protein, and essential nutrients. For more information, check out PETA’s guides to healthy vegan meals for dogs and cats.”

US pet spending reaches all-time high, again
“Pet industry spending reached a new all-time high in 2018, totaling $72.56 billion, according to the 2019-2020 National Pet Owners Survey...Last year, pet owners spent 4%, or $3 billion, more on pet care supplies and services compared to 2017.
“Millennials continue to be the largest pet-owning demographic and this shows in the data...We know this generation is willing to pay more for quality products and services to improve the health and well-being of their pets. Today more than ever, pet owners view their pets as irreplaceable members of their families and lives, and it’s thanks to this that we continue to see such incredible growth within the pet care community.”
Tumblr media
“A breakdown of the spending data shows pet owners spent an estimated $30.32 billion on pet food in 2018, an increase of 4.3% from 2017...spending on pet food would increase by 4.5% over the next year, estimating spending to reach $31.68 billion by the end of 2019.
According to the study, premium pet foods are purchased most frequently in the US market, followed by generic and natural pet foods...68% of US households owned a pet and the 2019 survey reports that number is now 67%. A plateauing rate of pet ownership in the US paired with a static volume of pet food sales indicates growing spending in this category is the result of increased pricing and the amplified number of sales of premium pet food with high-quality ingredients.”
Tumblr media
“In the coming year, we anticipate steady growth in the pet food category thanks to opportunities that reside in specialized diets, targeting the aging pet population and pets with unique dietary needs...The availability of fresh food options and subscription delivery programs is also expected to increase spending in this category.”
The average amount pet-owning households spent on pet food in 2018 totaled $259 for dog owners and $228 for cat owners. Average spending on treats came to $76 for dog owners and $58 for cat owners, and dog owners spent an average of $51 on chews. More than 90% of dog owners and 86% of cat owners reported buying treats for their pet in 2018, according to the survey.”

Agriculture Tech
(Agtech Investing Report 2014)

...Perry calls Indigo Ag’s solution to that problem “probably the key to our early technical success, that allowed us to leapfrog everybody else.” One of the company’s most important scientific insights, he explains, “was that plants have already done this experiment for us. The ancestors of these plants have been growing in this soil for 200 million years. Every single one of them has sampled those microbes and evolved ways of incorporating the ones that are helpful and rejecting the ones that are potentially harmful. And so, we can leverage those 200 million years of experiments by just looking inside the plant….It is a super simple insight, but nobody else was thinking about it that way.” ...new technologies focused on the health and productivity of plants will lead to an agricultural system that is better for the environment, better for humans, and better for farmers. “That is what I got into this for,” he says. “If we can solve those things, the positive impact on the world would be enormous.” Agriculture already uses 70 percent of the world’s fresh water. Fertilizers have led to chemical pollution of aquatic environments and soil degradation. “Roughly a third of greenhouse-gas emissions come from agriculture or the products that are ultimately consumed by agriculture,” Perry says. Most of the people who live in poverty today are among the billion and half people who work in agriculture. “Those three goals—of improving human health, of improving environmental sustainability, and making farming a living wage—are three of the most important things I think we can do.”
