#ai in the lestappen tag discourse

the way i'd rather go through months of creative block and putting only 1000 words into the work and make typos that ill fix with each reread than use generative ai because i'd rather take the pains to do it all because that's what makes it art. if you've never lost your mind over it at least a little bit then is it even worth it?
it's okay to not be perfect at putting out endless amounts of words (something i have to keep reminding myself) because humans are never predictable [unlike some of these fellas' IN THE HIGH-SPEED HIGH-STAKES WORLD OF FORMULA ONE bullshit]
i am not a fic writer but i enjoy reading lestappen a lott, and just wanted to pop in and say something regarding the use of AI in fics recently.
It is very discouraging to see how "common" AI use has become. Some of my favorite writers spend months crafting plots, writing drafts and editing only to see the space dominated by people churning out thousands of words in the matter of a few days. If you are also like me, a reader who doesn't write, your duty is to avoid engaging with these works. If you don't give them attention, they will not be able to continue abusing this space in this manner.
and to all the wonderful writers on here, please don't let this disturbing pattern discourage you. keep sharing your magic into the world. your versions of lestappen are what keep our fandom together between long breaks and tough droughts.
tagging some of my favorite writers who put in hard work and strongly discourage AI use, please go show them some love: @xxredwineandambiencexx @ladysomething @fueledbyremembering @sixteenhearts @ferrarisma @fabbyf1 @toppamplemousse @loquarocoeur @adutchlover @chock-and-bates @unlapped @formula-fun @usedtobetam @breathofnyx @gingerf1 @drivestraight @amarynas @mvlionheart @reveushe @verstappentime @hitthatapex
you all deserve the world <3

i would not count myself necessarily as a fic author (what with my singular lestappen fic and about a dozen or so haikyuu/jjk works over the past five years) but i am someone who found a space in fic writing and fic reading that is one of the biggest joys of my life.
i don’t want to get too far into the ai in fanfiction discourse (in part because i will get too heated, fic spaces are genuinely one of the last remaining non-commodified places of leisure and creativity and true community on the internet and ai does NOT belong here) but i am always, always, ALWAYS terrified of how willing we as a society are to let something else do the process of thinking FOR us.
writing, like most processes of creation, is an active thinking process. there’s no point in writing where you truly shut your mind off and retreat into brain fog, even if you are able to do some of it on autopilot. you are making purposeful choices throughout the process, and it’s a truly slow release dopamine activity. all of these things are so important as we lose a lot of the activities that have these characteristics in an increasingly ai (and shortened attention span) leaning world.
anyway, i’m not sure how much weight an ethical argument would have here. but writing fanfiction is supposed to be a personal pursuit. it’s supposed to be borne out of passion. if you don’t want to write, don’t write. it’s not like an essay at school (though i BEG of you all to not use ai for that either, please don’t outsource the learning or the thinking i promise it’s worth it it’ll make you a better scholar help you nourish a better mind). to live a life just by cutting corners and getting to some destination as quick as possible with the least effort possible truly isn’t a life. the effort is worth it. the idealism is worth it. doing something difficult, doing something badly, all of it is worth it. learning is worth it. and being able to read genuine writing will always be more valuable to a reader than ai slop.
#i really don’t think i belong in this discourse but#ai terrifies me equally as much as it stirs in me a deep hate#i was recommended to use it for grad school interview prep and#it’s scary#nothing can talk about me better than me even if i fuck up and say stupid stuff#anyway another reason i don’t belong in this discourse is that im notoriously dogshit at identifying ai fiction#like i suck#so if anyone has any tips i’d really really appreciate it#ai#ai fanfiction#lestappen#okay now that we’ve gotten to the bottom of the tags and no one’s reading this#i mean this completely genuinely - if you love ai in art spaces i can’t stand you as a person and i think you have no principles#like 100% genuinely fuck you

One more post with some thoughts on AI before I go back to writing my next updates for my fics.
I’m currently studying law while working full time and have a lot of exposure to AI. The industry I work in thankfully doesn’t lean on AI as a crutch but for my studies? The institution I study at actively encourages students to utilise AI for their study.
I have so many issues with that- reliance on AI dampens your ability to think critically and engage with the content you’re trying to learn and understand. For a degree like Law, it is so so important that you’re able to understand and engage with the law, and be able to do basic research and summaries.
It’s also a massive tell that all of my lecturers (who are practicing barristers in the field) all take the opposite stance and actively discourage AI use- both when studying and when practicing as a lawyer.
This also translates to writing fic for me. I’ve been writing since 2012 (waaay before AI was a thing) and genuinely one of the things I love the most about it is the research I get to do. I will go down rabbit holes, draw on real life experience to pour that into my stories. Sure, it means longer updates between chapters, but I also know that I’ve poured blood, sweat and tears into every word I wrote.
To those that read fic, I hope you have had the chance to take in the discourse around AI that has taken place in the Lestappen tag and fandom over the past 24-48 hours. We’ve heard from some great authors (many of whom are my favourites) and I share their sentiment- it is discouraging as a creator to have their works buried beneath AI generated works on the tag. It can also be demotivating to see the attention and engagement these authors get.
The eventual end result will be a mass exodus of some really great authors from the fandom and from the Lestappen tag on A03.
In an age of instant gratification and authors that churn out tens of thousands of words on a regular basis using AI, it is tempting to give these works attention and encouragement.
I would ask that you think critically when engaging with these works. If you want to be fed inconsistent plots and characters, flat dialogue and constant updates then that is your prerogative.
But I will never adjust my writing style or frequency to try and keep up with AI generated work. That way lies madness.
If it means I lose readers to AI generated work, then so be it.

About Me and My Blog
I am an adult, and use she/they pronouns, in Pacific Timezone. Please no minors, I do post suggestive and nsfw content. I will block for not respecting this boundary.
DO NOT REPOST MY WORK ON ANY OTHER PLATFORM
1. My favorite drivers are: Charles, Lewis, Max, Fernando, George. Also of course Kimi (my first love) and Seb and Kmag <3 It should be evident that my loyalties lie with Charles and Ferrari(that's who I am cheering for in races no exceptions) If Charles is out, I am cheering for the other Ferrari. If they are both out, I am complaining.
2. THERE ARE NO STUPID QUESTIONS. If you are new to the fandom and are curious about something do not hesitate to ask, I will answer to the best of my ability <3
3. Just because I like one driver it does not mean I hate another driver.
4. I don't do driver hate on my blog, any asks that are overly negative and hateful get deleted. I will block for any nasty driver hate in my tags. That does not mean I won't be critiquing drivers, but I try to be fair and analytical and not just hate for no reason. I tag any driver critique so that you can filter those tags if you don't want to see. The tag format is "DRIVER INITIALS critical" ex "VB Critical" (neutral example)
5. Just because I am reblogging posts/videos of a driver does not mean I support them. I reblog posts I think are informative to a race weekend. This includes hearing from the drivers in their own words.
6. This is a pro rpf blog. I know it's not real, it's just for fun. I like to multiship. My favorite pairings are lestappen. maxcar, choscar, and chewie and a few other rare pairs. Feel free to send me anything about rpf and pairings I love talking about them all. We love rpf on this blog.
7. Always feel free to tag me in posts, send me asks, dm about F1. I love talking about it, even if it's not about my top teams/drivers. If you want to have a Valtteri Bottas party in my asks I am down for that.
8. I am autistic and if you send me a joke there is a good chance I will not get it and take it literally. No problems, but you've been warned.
9. Please do not send Twitter/X links for any sources or fandom discourse. I do not support the platform and am inactive on my accounts. Send links to articles etc and feel free to reference fandom discourse on other platforms (I also do not have tiktok so I have not seen anything on there, and if you send a link I probably won't watch it). I won't block or be mad if you do send these kinds of things, but know that I won't be responding.
10. I don't talk about WAGs. I don't follow them, they don't interest me. I'm not anti-WAG, but I don't follow any of them so I just don't have much to say on their goings on. You can ask questions about them but I probably don't know the answer.
12. Do not repost my work. That means art, fics, annotated race analysis graphs etc. I do not post on twitter, instagram or tiktok, if you see my work being shared there please let me know it is not being shared with my permission. I post on tumblr and bluesky. If I catch you reposting my work(especially my art) there will be consequences.
13. This is an aggressively anti generative AI space. I do not support the use of generative AI in any capacity (I am an artist and writer this topic is very personal for me) If I have reblogged something that has been found to be AI please let me know. AI does not belong in fandom spaces
14. If you have any questions or concerns reach out, I will keep things private <3
Tags "Lucis race analysis" for my race analysis posts "Race analysis tips" for posts with advice on race analysis "Analysis resources" for posts that have resources for race and car analysis "Technical talk" for posts about the technical elements of F1 cars "the rpf of it all" for asks discussing rpf dynamics among the grid "Tyre screeches" for rambling thoughts
Queue set to post twice a day

gonna add to this actually, and say that I don't understand how using AI gives you as a writer any joy. sure you get the kudos or the hits but what I enjoy is the writing itself and the self satisfaction of having written something I care about. I literally have finished writing maybe 3 fics in the last 5 years but I couldn't care less because the process of writing all these hundreds of other fics that I never completed was fun, and I'm proud of what I've written. and I could have AI finish them all for me but where's the joy in that. as prev said writing is art and the pain is part of it. to take that all away for a couple of clicks is so pointless and it takes away the worth of all the hard work put in people who actually make an effort.
anyways everyone go read the fics of those who are tagged in this post cause they're amazing!
